Had some time in scenic downtown London, so I decided to grab a coffee at the first place I saw. The first place I saw was Commonwealth Coffee. It is a bright and spacious coffee house, obviously very popular with the Western University students. They also have sandwiches, which I did not try, but they have a good selection. B served me, and she was friendly and efficient. They make their own doughnuts and loaves. I got an apple doughnut. It was filled with apple filling, some cinnamon icing on top, and it was fresh and not heavy. As a tourist, I appreciated not feeling rushed. This was our first visit to Commonwealth Coffee. We're in London for the long weekend and decided to check it out after reading all the Yelp reviews. The place is beautiful! It's airy and clean and so welcoming. The baristas were super friendly and helpful. We ordered on iced Vietnamese coffee and one Café Mocha. We were given an number and went to find a seat. Our number was called within 5 minutes of ordering (maybe even less). The drinks were very good. The mocha was a little sweet, but really yummy and the Vietnamese coffee was just the right sweetness. The atmosphere is really nice, lots of chatter, people on laptops, people on coffee dates. We didn't try any of the pastries, but everything looked delicious. We'll be back for sure the next time we're in London. read more

First off, where did all this space come from? This is definitely the largest coffee shop I've seen in London. I believe they opened on April 3rd, and business is already fantastic. When we walked in around 4pm on a Friday, there were about 7 people behind the counter getting trained, and then 2 others that were serving customers. I ordered a Hawaiian salted caramel cappuccino, and my boyfriend got a mocha. All the drinks come in to-go cups, but would've loved to see some mugs available for customers sticking around. The coffee is pretty standard - nothing special but decent. The cafe was pretty full when we arrived, so we sat by the window. A spot opened up pretty quickly though, and we were able to move into the beautifully decorated area of tables. The tables are a little small for two people to work on, but I love the bright, simple atmosphere - they've really done a great job with the interior of this place. The employee who took our order didn't speak English very well, but service was good overall. I went up to grab a napkin and another worker very kindly asked how our drinks were tasting. A little goes a long way. There is free wifi but I'm pretty sure it's from the store next door (roli poli). I trust that Commonwealth will be getting its own wifi soon. I'm a tried and true old south resident and generally loyal to the coffee shops of the neighbourhood. I had seen the Instagram posts enough times to decide that boxcar donuts were worth trying out. I get that COVID is a hard time for all of us. I really do. But when you advertise curbside pickup and advise people to call upon arrival, then you should probably make an effort to help them. Two trips in a row now we have called and been told "someone will come out to get your order number". We've waited 20 minutes and this time around 15 minutes and then had to get out of the car and force our order number on someone after getting sick watching the staff help walk up people as they saunter up and entirely ignore all the parked cars waiting to be served. Good donuts are good donuts, but bad customer service is bad customer service. This process just simply isn't worth the hassle. If you're on foot and in the area, it's worth checking out. This was on my list of places to try and I so luckily stumbled by it on my morning walk before work. As soon as I stepped in, I was in immediate awe of how well put together this shop was I didn't expect to find such a cute and quaint place in London! And thus, a new love between this shop and I was born. I had to come back. I was greeted with many friendly faces, pastries beckoning my name, and paired with a fantastic recommendation - a white chocolate blackberry mocha, 1/2 sweet to suite my taste. There are many donut and deserts shops around London but I base my review not only on quality and quantity but also the staff. Recently we had a small issue with our order and they delivered back to us and made it up to us ten fold. Cool new coffee shop in London!! Cool, aesthetic decor and vibe. Tables are small, but seating is nice, with large windows looking over Richmond St. Great for catching up with friends or doing a bit of work! WiFi available is from Roli Poli next door currently. We tried the iced mocha and the nitro coffee on tap, both were delicious! The iced mocha is a little sweet but it was my first time trying the nitro coffee (cold brew infused with nitrogen gas), and felt light and airy. They source their coffee from 49th parallel and fratello, and have a small selection of packaged baked goods as well. A little on the pricier end compared to the rest of London but with the limited number of cafes in the city I'm not complaining! read more

I came to Commonwealth for Boxcar Donuts located inside the cafe and I was thoroughly impressed by the quality and taste of the donuts. We got the charity donut which was basically vanilla and sprinkles, banana cream pie, and the apple fritter. One thing I did note is that I couldn't find any of the prices of the donuts anywhere... I'm not sure if I am blind or... but the total of the three donuts came to $9 which isn't terrible! I honestly loved all three (two + fritter) donuts equally. The texture was a little doughy and very moist, similar to Krispy Kreme without the extremely sweet glaze. The apple fritter had chunks of fresh apple in it making it super moist and delicious. I kept the charity donut in the fridge for a couple days and it still tasted so good after heating it up. 12/10 would recommend these donuts!!! read more

Such cool hipstery place, really high quality and didn't feel like I was in London at all. Lots of coffee options, lots of seating and really well maintained. The staff were super friendly and made you feel like home. I hade the medium roast blend and it was really good. My friend had a avo toast and a black latte (I think it was a Halloween special) and she seemed to like it. Gorgeous!!!! I work nearby, so I've been eyeing this spot. I really enjoy the coffee here, and they are happy to give you coconut milk on the side (which is a huge bonus for me!). I usually get a small light, which runs 2.50 (total). Yeah, its a bit steep. But the coffee has never disappointed! They also have a (fairly small) selection of baked goods, which aren't on the menu at all. BTW, they're 2.50 each. Whether its a fluffly almond croissant (worth it), or a pecan-tart (delicious but small), or a cookie (seriously? 2.50 for a cookie?). They also sell bagels but I have no idea what you can get done to them. The servers are nice - I took a pecan-tart and the lady asked me if I wanted a fresh one instead! Overall, the coffee is good. Good place to study/catch up with friends. I tried a basic latte! But it was pretty good! Amazing donuts - triple the price of a Tim's donut but they're worth it. There's an abundance of flavours to choose from and they're all delicious. They usually sell out in most of their flavours in the afternoon so definitely head there a bit earlier if you wanted to try the donuts. The drinks are nothing special, they're just the usual cafe drinks. Seating is the real problem - because it's gotten more popular, there's always trouble finding a seat to chat, work, or an outlet for your laptop so students beware. If you want to come work then definitely come earlier to grab a spot. Other than that, it's a clean and bright space to work in. read more

Very cool spot - large spot that is! This place feels massive for a coffee shop but that doesn't really matter. Service was great! The iced coffee, as with most of the menu, is a bit pricey. However taste and quality is good. The atmosphere was far better than an overcrowded and overmerchandised starbucks. The decor is simple and modern.
