You can tell everything is made in-house, which is impressive given their wide range of offerings: quiches, sandwiches, cookies, muffins; they have it all. The ingredients are high quality, and the flavours are thoughtfully developed. Pink lemonades are often too sweet, but this one was perfectly balanced. The lemon square was nicely tart, the quiche had generous chunks of feta, and the muffin had that rich, buttery flavour you only get from homemade baked goods. Service was bubbly and helpful, and the interior was quaint. There's just enough seating outside, with a setup that lets you choose between sun or shade. Special mention for offering the London Fog iced; my first time trying it, and it is now my new go-to. Prices were surprisingly reasonable considering the quality. okay so, my girlfriend and I have given this place multiple chances but here's the thing... we usually order a matcha and an iced coffee, I like it black and she likes it with oat milk. every time she orders the matcha it's a gamble on how much damn milk They make it with (typically 90% milk) doesn't matter which server makes it. On top of that, requesting light milk doesn't seem to resonate with the server or change the outcome of the drink. We like the outside patio but it's usually just pestering with bees bc of their open lid garbage can sitting directly in the middle of the patio. So although I want to give this place a good review and rating, it seems quite difficult to do so. P.S. why do they serve jamaican patties? read more

Croissant was good, butter tarts weren't my fave. I personally think they're too eggy in the filling. I also ordered a mocha with oat milk... the chocolate chips they put in there have a hard time dissolving so I would recommend getting a coffee/latte that has syrup if you want to taste the flavor throughout. Vibes inside were good, lots of seating but it is for sure busy, so find your seat quick! The barista that took my order was awesome and double checked that my preference for oat milk wasn't an allergy, which I thought was very considerate. My favourite cafe in London!! Their pastries and drinks taste amazing and they are at a reasonable prices! if you are visiting this cafe for the first time, definitely give their cruffins a try! They are amazing!! It's basically a muffin with crispy layers and cream inside the muffin! I always get their earl grey tea with steamed non fat milk , the flavour is very nice and it's really good! The interior is spacious and very comfortable! Staffs are super nice and responsive! One thing I wish they had was wifi, it would be so much better if they have wifi there so people can work or browse on internet but they are amazing read more

This place is amazing! The atmosphere, food, and coffee are all extremely top notch and enjoyable! Beginning with the atmosphere, it is really cool that they dont have wifi! Yes, I will say that again, that is a plus!! The restaurant (during non-COVID times) promotes interaction and connection, and aims to have their seating reserved for those who want to have a conversation and make a connection. This is admittedly not the place I would recommend going if you are finishing a school project, but it doesn't have to be; go to Starbucks for that! Instead, Black Walnut is the go to location for a date or a relationship catch up. It is fantastic. The food I have had have pretty much exclusively been their fantastic Cruffins. They change these out for the seasons, with pumpkin in the autumn and other variants throughout the seasons. I have not disliked a single one. Not only is it a light fluffy croissant-like muffin, but it is filled with a delicious whipped cream (but thicker) centre. Honestly, don't sleep on the cruffin. The coffee is some of the best in the city, specially for sit down experience. Given the entire experience together, with food, coffee, and like I mentioned, the ambiance, it is great coffee. I have bought a couple bags to have at home, though admittedly switched recently to a local roaster down the street. Either way, the coffee is fabulous, and I would not at all fault that experience; it is just a hyper personalized preference when it comes to your java preferences! I want to provide a quick tip of the hat to the staff. I came in the first time, and the crew was incredible. Literally the second time I came they remembered me, and asked if I wanted the same or to try a new recommendation. They continue conversations, and what was really fun as an experience was it was not just the staff member helping you. The barista jumped in to engage at one point too! It was just a whole incredible experience; hats off to the team there. You make this place what it is! All in, this is one of the easiest 5-star reviews I have ever given! I ordered their smoothy and when I asked to exchange it for a latte because I did not like the taste the manager said I would have to play for the latte. We spent over $70.00 on lunch there and I was treated like crap! It was difficult not to get upset about their customer service. The food was not great either. It was bland and not very good. Twice now I have gone to the Richmond Street location 15 minute before an appointment to get a cappuccino. Twice now I have left without my cappuccino even though there are about ten people working there. I finally had to leave after 13 minutes of waiting. It's a busy place but that is excessive to wait and there was a lot of chatting by the staff behind the counter and no sense of urgency. I'm not expecting Tim Hortons but.... I want to say that the baked goods are good, the coffee is legit -- albeit overpriced. Moreover, in all my cafe hopping in Toronto, NYC, London (the UK) and other places never have I EVER been asked to move or even heard of this practice of vacating seats for other customers before coming to Black Walnut. I'm not talking about being a student with my books, a group of friends. The banana bread is so good, as are the pastries. The lunch deals are also good. If I'm paying $15.00 for me alone with lunch deals, baked goods I should be able to sit; read a book or work on something in some piece. But the ambience, attitudes and values of the owner/manager doesn't go well with a 'cafe'/ bakery vibe. Black Walnut seems to be very unique in that aspect and to be honest it's something that doesn't really sit well with me. Customer hustling aside, the food is good, their sugar cookies over Christmas are absolutely delicious. But everything could definitely be knocked down by 50 cents. And girl, it would not hurt to offer that my banana bread be warmed up and served with butter without me having to ask and feel like a nuisance. read more

This cafe just opened up on Richmond Row; it's an offshoot of the Wortley Village cafe with the same name. The restaurant itself is really nice. They did a great job. I've been here 3 times over the last week. Twice for coffee, once for a snack. First time I went for coffee they were a bit slow, but it was the second day they were open so it was understandable. They were fast and organized the next 2 visits. They have a few blends of coffee to choose from, a long list of caffeinated and decaf teas, and lots of baked goods and pie. I tried the chocolate banana bread and it was great (and reasonably priced for a cafe at $2.35), I've heard the cruffins are amazing but they've been sold out when I go late afternoon. Usually my go-to in the area is Timmies, this is slightly more expensive but I think I'd prefer to go here. Definitely not super cheap but not outrageous either. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. They do have a lunch menu with soups/salads/etc but I haven't tried it. read more

I really enjoyed this bakery as a breakfast spot. The food and coffee are really great. There are these "sunny side up" buttermilk scones that are absolutely delicious. My partner also got a frittata that he devoured. Highly recommended as a bakery. Unfortunately, this wasn't quite what I was looking for in a spot to work and have a meeting. As others have pointed out, there's no wifi. Or outlets. It wasn't what I hoped for in a mobile workspace, but it was good for a meal and a really delicious iced chai. It's likely by design, as mobile workers park and sit (but also spend money? I guess it's just not their target demographic). If they had wifi and power, I would probably live here, ha. If you're coming here to work, study, or have a business meeting, you'll be disappointed. If you are coming here to pick up baked goods as an occasional treat, you'll come away happy. read more

When it comes to eclectic café's, this one is tops. It was a great day off for Victoria Day, and the weather was absolutely beautiful, so a friend and I came here to sit and have brunch and catch up. Knowing it was a holiday, I did expect it to be busy when we walked in, but there was a table we were able to grab in the café, and the patio was open as well. We walked to the pastry case area where all of the delicious pastries, and salads were displayed. So much to choose from, they had cruffins, breakfast scones, three different kinds of quiches and so much more. I ordered the mushroom and goat cheese quiche, and a café au lait with one of their medium roast coffees. They are all made in house, as well as the coffee is roasted in house as well. The prices weren't that bad either. We had found our seats and the baristas brought our food and drink once it had been prepared, and someone is always ready to help you when you're ready. The mushroom and goat cheese quiche was delicious and the crust was flaky and buttery. The quiche itself tasted amazing and the goat cheese complimented the mushrooms. I had ordered the 16z café au lait, and the flavour of the coffee was mild and smooth. The café itself was busy, probably because of the holiday, but you could find yourself getting lost in whatever you're doing and have a decent conversation with whomever you're with. it wasn't loud at all. It's a wonderful place to study or read a book and enjoy a nice cup of coffee and a delicious pastry. I wonder why I hadn't come sooner since I live fairly close to here! read more

I really love this place! The coffee is great and the food options are pretty decent. I understand it is a cafe, but I think if it is was possible to expand the options there are for lunch or even dinner would be ideal! I have ordered sandwiches from here a few times, and the insides are different, but the bread tends to be the same. There also isn't a whole lot of complexity to the sandwich - which is good when you want that, but sometimes you want something real hardy. Possibly putting up some umbrellas outside on the patio would be great too! There is tonnes of seating out there, but it's pretty warm - especially with the black furniture. If i had to recommend something, I would get the Latte with a Ham and Swiss! It would be great if there was a little side dish of sorts... I was very excited to see my favourite cafe open a second location, and this one trumps the first in a few key areas: larger, roomier interior; larger outdoor seating area; slightly more relaxed; the vibe is a little younger, a little more chill. The only small downside I noticed was that the outdoor traffic noise is louder than in the Old South village. Having said that, I love the new Richmond Row shop. read more

Ok so I love the black walnut, I've come here a million times with friends. It's great. But I'm only giving it three stars because of one thing. No wifi. Hello? It's 2017. I came here alone because I'm waiting on a friend who's at an appointment. I paid for two hours parking, I ordered food and a drink, sat down and went to connect to wifi. Went up to ask for a password etc. And the response I get? "oh we don't have wifi, we are trying to promote the social aspect"... Lol what? I'm alone, first of all. I'm not the only person who comes alone to a coffee shop. I get that we all need to disconnect from our phones and socialize. But really? I feel angry actually. I should have a choice.
