We ordered a double aperol spritz, the gnocchi al pesto, the clasico and rustic burgers, and the suppli. The gnocchi was amazing, lots of flavor to the pesto and the texture was fresh. This bar markets itself as an inclusive LGBTQ space, but our experience did not reflect that. My friends and I, all Black men, were visiting Rome to explore this historic city. Once our drinks were set down, we were abruptly told to pay immediately. The server placed the receipt on the table and said, "Pay now, please." Meanwhile, customers sitting beside us were served drinks, and even food, without any such demand. When we questioned this difference in treatment, management claimed it was their normal policy. That statement was contradicted by what we observed in real time and by conversations with other patrons, who admitted that they had not yet received their check. Being singled out like that is uncomfortable anywhere, but especially in a space that claims to value equality and belonging. Discriminatory Treatment Disguised as "Policy" My friends and I visited this LGBTQ bar in Rome expecting an inclusive and welcoming environment. Unfortunately, our experience was the opposite. After ordering three drinks, once they were placed in front of us, the server immediately put down the receipt and said, "Pay now, please," in a rude and abrupt manner. This stood out because customers seated directly next to us -- and others around the bar -- were served drinks and food without being asked to pay immediately. When we raised the issue with management, we were told this was their "standard procedure." That explanation does not hold up. We spoke with other patrons who confirmed they were not required to pay upon delivery, and we personally witnessed multiple groups being served without the same demand. This was not a misunderstanding or a one-off mistake. It was clear, unequal treatment, and it made us feel singled out and unwelcome in a space that claims to stand for inclusion. An LGBTQ establishment should be especially mindful of how bias -- whether conscious or not -- shows up in customer interactions. Inclusion isn't a label; it's behavior. My experience was focused on the coffee. The cappuccino tasted fine but had a weak foam. But so what? I don't feel like Coming Out claimed to earn their laurels from their coffee. Other than the dubious pleasure of supporting a business that is theoretically run by and for queer people, there's no reason to stop here if your objective is food. As many have said, the service is lousy -- or better said -- some of the employees are lovely, and some of the employees are walking around with so much attitude you'd think they were on a shoot for Wilhelmina Models rather than waiting tables in a fairly crummy burger-and-pasta joint. I had the worst Spritz I've so far encountered in Rome, and my hamburger, while tasty, was so raw in the middle that the meat was literally cold. I can't believe that meets health and safety standards. They can't make you an espresso after lunch (in an Italian restaurant????), and, after ignoring you, for most of your meal, the servers still can't be bothered to bring you your check - you have to walk to the cashier yourself and ask for it. I never got to meet the Simona that so many people rave about, but I'm still inclined to think that Simona ought to be giving more of her attention to training employees and improving the food. It's irksome to be drawn into patronizing a place because it's queer-friendly, only to find out that that's mostly a gimmick and that Coming Out is no different than all the other touristy, over-priced restaurants on the Colosseum strip. read more

Can't even give it one star. I was APPALLED at how the server and guy behind the counter treated me, my husband and son when we were there on Sunday September 19, 2021. I asked for a cappuccino and asked if they had a croissant or 'pane tostado' and the server answered with a flat out "No" even though we had seen them serving some type of bread to the table of women next to us. He offered no other options he just pointed and rudely pushed the tabletop menu toward me so I just ordered the cappuccinos which btw were served to us almost COLD. Eventually my husband had to walk inside (we were seated outside) to pay the bill since the server never came back. When waiting to pay my husband's mask broke - both the server and the guy behind the counter looked at each other and LAUGHED then sarcastically asked if he needed a new one. If anything was the most negative side of our visit to Rome was this experience. They were so hateful and unpleasant it turns my stomach to think about it. I know was a gay bar and so what? We did not have a problem with them but yet they apparently had a problem with us... I hope the owner reads this and corrects the behavior of the staff and how to treat customers regardless of sexual orientation. I will be sure to blast this business with this review on every social media site FB, Instagram, Twitter as well as word of mouth. We travel a lot and so do our friends and family. Stopped just to grab some coffee and something to eat before we went to the coloseum. Being obvious American when we ordered the waiter was rather cold. Asking for just some simple like toast or bread (asked in Italian- pane tostado) he advised they didn't have bread. So I had an exhausting final full day of sight-seeing planned. My day was going to keep me at some of the "smaller" sights around the Colosseum and then taking a nearby bus to the catacombs. So, I wanted a lunch that wasn't too far away but not terribly touristy. The staff was great and incredibly friendly and it was nice to be in an openly LGBT-inclusive environment. I will totally grab more drinks here. I had ordered an Aperol spritz and some carbonara. The carbonara had a very heavy sauce, heavier than I've had other times in Rome- to the point where it was dripping like a liquid. It wasn't terrible, just wasn't great. Everytime I come to Roma I stay at the 1st/2nd Floor b/c of the gay friendliness. And just so happens, a gay bar downstairs. Very convenient and very close the Colosseum and other tourist attractions. Drink and food prices are decent and the staff are fun and helpful. Do note: this isn't a dance/nightclub! Coming Out is a pretty cool gar bar located on Via San Giovanni in Laterano, aka Rome's Gay Street district. They are located just literally outside of the Coliseums's shadow and offer a full bar and food menu. Our group stopped in after an afternoon of sight seeing and were pleased by both the friendly staff and the ultra modern decor. Their menu includes a lot of Italian classics and other dishes as well. The menu is very affordable, with many of the pasta dishes clocking in around €6 and a cappuccino setting you back €1.50. They also serve up some excellent mixed drinks. The crowd was mostly locals during our visit, but I could see it getting touristy, especially with outdoor seating in the summer. If you are planning to stop in for a quick meal and a drink, get there early in the evening. Otherwise, stick around for when the disco starts later in the evening. Overall, highly recommended especially if you are on a budget. read more

It's always sweet to see the Flag anywhere in the world. Just a few steps from the Coliseo Roma, this place serves anyone, not just us. The crowd is always friendly and the staff is very accommodating. They are happy to see their American brothers in Roma. The food is as good as any on the street, and as I say, it's one of ours and it's a rock-toss walk to the Coliseum. Please stop and say "buongiorno" or "buono sera." They'll recognize your accent immediately and smile widely. They'll probably want to know how you found them. The Flag!
