My friends and I, all Black men, were visiting Rome to explore this historic city. Once our drinks were set down, we were abruptly told to pay immediately. The server placed the receipt on the table and said, "Pay now, please." Meanwhile, customers sitting beside us were served drinks, and even food, without any such demand.
When we questioned this difference in treatment, management claimed it was their normal policy. That statement was contradicted by what we observed in real time and by conversations with other patrons, who admitted that they had not yet received their check.
Being singled out like that is uncomfortable anywhere, but especially in a space that claims to value equality and belonging.
I'm sharing this so others are aware and so management understands how actions like this affect people, regardless of intent.
