Service was okay albeit very inexperienced servers/wait staff. Ambiance was impeccable! Rooftop is highly recommended. So much of the food was fantastic. Cauliflower queso was delicious and the plantains were incredible. Construction of both the veggie fajitas and enchiladas was lacking. Enchiladas tasted delicious. However, the fajitas were terrible. No sizzle upon arrival, poor choices in seasonal veggies, along with no green peppers or onions to be seen, and had to ask for sour cream. Should not be described as fajitas and definitely too mushy from the vegetable choices. Would eat here again, just not get the fajitas. read more

Rooftop Margaritas and fish tacos are the move. Very friendly service. Our bartender was very cool and made perfect drinks while handling a full bar. Guacamole and salsa tray had great flavor and variety. Only mild criticism was the vegan chorizo wasn't quite the same elite level as the chicken tinga and catch of the day taco. Still, the rest of the food combined with roof/drinks/service ensure we will be back. read more

We have been big fans for years, but our last experience was disappointing. The tacos I got were much smaller than in the past, although the price was the same. "Shrink-flation" has come to Comida. Service and margaritas are still great. But charging $4.50 for chips and salsa and $18 for 2 small tacos? No thanks. read more

We've been here twice now and had a mediocre experience both times. The first time we had good service and good, if not really good, food. The second time we had poor service and mediocre food. The issues were as follows: My 'build your own bowl' was supposed to come with cherry tomatoes, which I love. It came with regular chopped up tomatoes, which I don't love. When I asked the server she said she'd 'ask chef,' but she didn't come back for a long time. When she did come back I asked again and she said 'chef said were out of them tonight.' That would've been fine had my husband's dish not had cherry tomatoes all over it. My husband ordered his steak medium-rare and it was served very well-done. He ate it because he was super hungry, but getting a meat temperature right should be restaurant 101. I was asked what kind of salsa I would like served with my meal, but none came. When I asked the server about it, she said she'd bring some. She did, but I was pretty much done eating at that time. My husband asked for a side sauce when he ordered his meal and had the same experience. The chicken in my 'build a bowl' was overcooked. My husband and I both thought everything was way too salty. We want CC to do well, but service and food issues make it unlikely that we'll go back. read more

If I could give 3.5 stars, I would. PROS: excited for more life on Central St and even more excited to check out their rooftop deck when it's done. Thought the cocktails were refreshing and the idea to add extra flair to them was brilliant. Also loved the decor. The waitstaff was friendly. CONS: thought the food was just ok. We got the tacos, and with there being many other options for tacos nearby, I certainly would not return just for theirs. I also found it a little irritating that you need to purchase the chips and salsa, even when purchasing entrees. Would go back for cocktails on the roof in the spring! read more

I had a fabulous dinner and experience tonight at Comida Cantina. Excellent food and excellent service. This is a great addition to the growing food scene in Evanston. The atmosphere feels like a trendy downtown Chicago spot and the drinks reflect that as well! I highly recommend the Fancy Margarita-the mixture of smoky and mango purée will have your taste buds dancing. All of the food was delicious. Some of the highlights were the Cauliflower Fundido and the Empanadas. Do yourself a favor and check this spot out. You won't be disappointed. Good luck getting a reservation though, it was pretty crowded. read more

We were very disappointed with last night's meal. At best, it was bland and gluey. At worst, I got the wrong dish. I was asked about the level of spiciness I like - I told them none to mild. I got two side dishes that were hot - about a 6 on a scale of ten. One of our cocktails was undrinkable, the other too sour (and I like a good sour cocktail!). The most annoying thing was the din. My husband and I were shouting (really) at each other in order to hear. The only good thing was the young serving crew - they meant well and remedied things (eg, getting the wrong dish) quickly. The good: Nice decor. Service was good. The bad: Noisy, not helped by solo guitarist who could not be heard clearly but contributed to the heavy ambient noise making conversation difficult. Awesome new addition to Central! The food is deliciousssss, ambience is very cool, and the staff was super friendly. Only a couple weeks old but Comida has already established itself as one of our top favorite dinner spots in Evanston. We ordered the Botanos trio, cauliflower curry, and the Sirloin. This place is a much needed addition to the neighborhood. Im on my second visit and its living up to high standards. Had the steak tacos, Fancy Mango Margaritas 1st time around. The steak was actually to high quality to be in a taco! Margarita, had it with smokey mezcal and was amazing!. 2nd visit i did Guac, Chicken tacos and Elote. Guac was delicious, maybe a tad less salt on the house made chips- otherwise excellent. House-made hot sauces were right on par- Elote, You immediately know its freshly shucked roasted corn, without an overkill of everything else. I traveled from Highland Park (where we have excellent Mexican food) to Evanston to meet my daughter who wanted to try the new Mexican restaurant in Evanston. My daughter had 3 different tacos which she enjoyed. My granddaughter had 2 tacos but only ate half of one. That was enough for her! I had short rib enchiladas. I asked for them without mole sauce and I got them with no sauce at all. They were crisp and dry. Worse enchiladas I EVER had. Will never go there again. Pricey and simply not good. Four of us dined at Comida on Saturday evening. My immediate, positive impression was that the owner(s) had put a lot of effort and creativity into the interior design. Muy bueno. We were quickly seated at a table next to the large windows that face the street. Great spot for people watching, except that at 7 PM, the sun was low and beaming straight into my face, with nowhere to escape and no window coverings to help. So for the first half of our time there I was blinded by the light, which I did not appreciate, but it did offer me the opportunity to observe that the windows were dirty; streaked from a failed attempt at cleaning them. No bueno. Our server was amusing and polite, although I would have liked to see him from time to time. I ordered a glass of wine, but he never returned to ask any of us if we wanted a second drink. No bueno. I should add that this restaurant, for some unfathomable reason, does not sell wine by the bottle, which I found odd and somewhat annoying because I enjoy the ritual of a server opening a bottle, pouring a taste. :( I ordered the Vegetable Fajitas with Chicken Mole. The meal was perfectly fine and more than adequate, but it just wasn't special. That is to say, I've had fajitas as good or better from a carry out place. But I've also had worse. Would I return? Yes. This is still a relatively new restaurant. It has some strong positives, as well as a roof deck (which we did not visit), and I imagine that they will iron out the kinks and install some blinds. As for the "comida," it was acceptable for the price, but I do wish that I could say, "como para chuparse lost dedos." read more

Wow. today Comida proved to me there is more to eating out than just getting food and drinks. We've been to Comida plenty of times prior but today was one of the final nights before my daughter went off to school. We had a familiar server Jack; who we've had and loved before and he just kept being a superhero. There was a younger child unattended and he was able to help her back to her seat and walk her across the rooftop (Jack is a young college kid). There was also an older couple who had trouble hearing and Jack calmly listened attentively and was extremely patient. He was able to remain calm when they became frustrated they weren't served wine glasses or a Pinot Grigio because they ran out. And lastly our turn, I (being the suburban mom that can't let go) was crying to my daughter about how I'll miss her as she embarrassingly looked for any way out. Somehow, Jack was able to act as a mediator and calm and cheer us both up to the point we were smiling and laughing, enjoying the last few nights together instead of wasting them crying. Just amazing stuff from an incredibly charming young man. The crispy shrimp taco was out of this world! The Mango margarita was great, although the plantains could've had some more excitement flavor-wise. The rooftop is always a great vibe and thanks to Jack he calmed down all the fuss on the rooftop! Started off great with the cauliflower queso then it went downhill after that. Sweet potato pancake fell apart and turned to mush trying to get it from the platter to my plate. Ordered the mole Brussel sprouts after that and they were VERY under cooked and some of the almonds tasted funky. Finished our martinis (which were great) and left. Management had the rooftop open for business and the door upstairs constantly open and closed. We left. It's 45 degrees out. There were maybe six people on the roof. 55 degrees in the dining room is unprofessional. Not worth making the forty people and your staff cold to add those six covers. Got a table right away with no wait ! Overall, very pleasant experience! Waitress was lovely! Food was pretty quick! Pleasant atmosphere. I only have one complaint, and that is that the young girl who brought us our food passive aggressively dropped our food on the table and sulked away! We just ordered dinner from Comida for the second time in two weeks because the food blew us away the first time. We ordered the Latin fried rice with pork (and peanuts!) and chicken mole in the first order and they were amazing together. The flavors are all just a little unique and a step above what we are used to having. For the second order we added some margaritas. The spicy margarita was very spicy in a good way and the hibiscus margarita was refreshing. We will definitely order again and hope to eat here in person when it is safe to do so. read more

This place has a lot of potential but they need to work on their people skills and understanding the customer experience. Hostess was disorganized, we sat at a table upstairs outside that was full of dust, we asked the waiter if he could wipe it down, he said he would have to look for a bus boy, we got the wrong menu, finally ordered and had to wait 35 minutes for our food. Food was good but by this point we were disappointed. Whoever owns this place should put their entire staff through customer service 101. read more

Just WOW. My husband and I just wanted to find a place with indoor dining and this came up on my feed. Let me just say, WE ARE SO GLAD it did. We are both vegan and the fact that they had vegan options without any hassle was fantastic. Our waitress gave us her recommendations on drinks and they were phenomenal. The food, FANTASTIC. The drinks, AMAZING. We ordered the Vegan Chorizo Tacos and the Portobello Mushroom Tacos (I can't believe how good these were, but honestly I inhaled them). We also ordered guacamole and papas fritas. There wasn't any food left on our plates. I cannot wait to come back here and order this food again. It's definitely become a new favorite place. And let me just tell you about their cleanliness. Unreal. The first thing that grabs my attention in a restaurant is how clean it is when you first walk in. There isn't even a food smell when you walk in, that's how clean it is. The kitchen looks spotless and everything was cooked to perfection. I really like the look of the restaurant. It's chic and has cool decor and I've seen pictures of the roof patio and that looks cool too. It was my second time here and I was super disappointed this time around. I had really high expectations because of the experience I had last time. We were there on a Tuesday. The server taking care of us was almost the bartend. I think. Super short hair. Anyway, I let the server know about my allergy and she said everything was gluten free and didn't talk about any cross contamination of the fryers. She was attentive, my water didn't go empty, and I could tell she actually cared. Tonight's service was just a shame. Every other table had a water jug but ours. My water was never refilled. My boyfriend had to flag someone down to ask for another drink. Meanwhile we were told we have until 8:45 to eat and leave. So to have to flag someone down to ask for another drink was just absurd. The food tonight was so different then last time. Nachos were bad. Tostadas were dry. I mean nothing about this dinner was enjoyable other then seeing the dogs walk past the window. We live a half hour away and again I had high expectations and raced there after work tonight wanting that same experience and I was just let down. Won't be back anytime soon. read more

This is one of my favorite Evanston spots. I am sad that the pandemic has halted in restaurant dining, because not only are the food and margaritas amazing, so is the atmosphere! I've ordered takeout a few times, one being on NYE and not realizing they were closed (oops on my part!) and they were nice enough to slip in some free chips and salsa in our order today. Comida Cantina is such a cute restaurant. The ambiance indoors is adorable and they even have miniature fire pits for outdoor seating. They have QR codes on the tables for the menus, and the waiters were all masked. Coming from Texas, I may be spoiled but I thought the food was just OK. The complimentary chips and 3 salsas were pretty good, but the chips were very greasy. I ordered the vegetable and chicken fajitas and while the flavor was good, the chicken was very dry. This also not a traditional fajita preparation--it's more of a barbecue. My friends ordered tacos and it seems like that's the way to go here. I might come back in a group, but I would order the tacos next time! read more

My wife and I had a lovely visit to Comida this past weekend. I informed the waitress that I was Celiac and she knew all the protocols right away. She went into detail about how the chef really tries to make the majority of the menu gluten-free, that they have protocols around changing gloves, knives, etc. She also went into detail about how some dishes were gluten-free, but we make in a combined fryer, so they wouldn't be suitable for me. I have 3 tacos, the jerk cauliflower, the skirt steak, and the brisket taco. All very very good! There is also a good selection of drinks, I got a pineapple White Claw. read more

Comida is a fantastic restaurant with attentive, friendly staff and a great menu. A big shout out to Jamie, the manager and Wilson in particular for their awesome personalities and positive demeanor. The whole team is great. The food is wonderful and they always have my favorite beer on tap. The chicken tacos in particular are phenomenal. I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are headed to a Northwestern football game or basketball game from out of town make sure you get to Comida before you head down to the game. Enjoy! read more

We have dined at Comida several times and each time have enjoyed the ambiance ( we have sat on the roof, at fire pit on street and in the restaurant), the service and the food/drinks. The portions are generous and full of flavor. I highly recommend their spicy margarita, it's made with just the right amount of heat . We had the pleasure of having Lydia serve us our last visit and she was great . She was pleasant,professional and was attentive without being overbearing . She had great knowledgeable about the menu and made some good suggestions! I do wish they had better hours. They close at 9 on the weekend which I think is a bit early.
