Okay don't you look at the front of this place and expect to see superman come out the door? the place is an old armory like building that use to house the VFW (there were two in town). It has the big hall kind of space and the brick definitely lends to the ambiance. My husband has a 'mailbox' of his own inside, go head, pop in and ask them about it. I know if you live in Reading you've drove by it a million like zillion times, thinking.... whats it like in there? Sort of that private club who reads/collects comic book kind of mystery place. Outstanding selection of comics, toys, games, statues, CDs, and really anything you can think of! Reasonably priced as well. Go about every 2 weeks to a month and pickup comics and figurines. No doubt the best comic shop in Massachusetts. Only downside is they have some grumpy employees but most are very kind and helpful! read more

Great selection of comic books, action figures - a discount bin for the little ones to pick from, and the like. A great stop with the kids and the husband. Not sure which of them enjoy it most. It would help if they had a little music playing, I feel like every word you say is echoed through the whole store where the older gentleman at the register presides... There is seldom a time where I don't leave this store without a stack of back issues. This store has a ton of comics and the older books are very reasonably priced. Also, the organization and ease of finding the books you are looking for is second to none in the Boston area. The staff seems pleasant enough, they tend to leave you alone and let you come to them when you need assistance which I can appreciate, however there was an occasion or 2 where I asked for help and the person on duty was less than helpful but it doesn't change the fact that they have the best selection around. Note: there isn't a dedicated parking lot, but I'm yet to have to park more than a block away. read more

Brought in hundreds of dollars worth of figures and books to sell based upon a recommendation that they were fair. They are not. I got a choice of store credit or half that number in cash. Obviously took store credit, but was never told that after (6) six months this place's gift cards are not valid. Buyer beware, sure... Was finally told the card containing my balance was about to expire, and was prompted to just come in and buy anything and bring it to Target to get my money from them. From the owner!!! Not very professional. I am taking this as a major loss, and writing this review to keep this from happening to any other collectors. Comically speaking, this store has an ever-shifting reserve of geeky ephemera from every corner of the fanboy universe. I've been making my rounds at this store since 2005 (my far off days as a sophomore in high school,) and have decided to remain a loyal patron in light of both highly positive and mildly disappointing experiences over the years. The basic principle a buyer needs to take into account when shopping at Comically Speaking is that one will typically be able to leave with a fairly-priced haul on the days on which the store owner is present (look for the bald, mustachioed biker guy behind the counter.) On certain days, the owner hands over store supervision to an older gentleman who, for some unknown reason, never fails to scan me with infrared laser vision, as if I may rob him, and then proceeds to charge an outrageous deal for a few otherwise mediocre items. Three scuffed up Star Trek figurines from the mid-nineties were sold to me for ten dollars. These toys had clearly seen better days when they were still hermetically sealed in their original Playmates boxes. Normally I would not have fetched over six dollars for these, but since I wasn't willing to put out for Amazon's shipping rates, I settled on the total. On other occasions, I would've been charged no more than the reasonable valuing of five to six dollars. My definition of "fairly-priced" is used rather loosely, as certain sections in the store are priced on a somewhat erratic scale. A key example would be their poster bin; all are priced at $7.95. This price is actually a great closeout for the colorful pickings of old action movie, concert, and superhero reprints. At any rate, about ten percent of their posters were smeared in mold and dirt. The fact that they were protected by a bendable, plastic seal notwithstanding, if I ran this shop, those posters would already have been tossed in the dumpster. My fulfilling adventures here, are about equal to the contrarily crappy times in this store. These days, I can usually be found prodding through their used vinyl selection. I have come across many great, dollar bin titles in their record library, and have bought several albums from the Cars, Mott the Hoople and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band all ranging from very good to mint condition. Their appraisal on vinyl records is usually low when measured against Ebay standards and if you listen to records, you may be in awe of some of the LP's they have in stock, but it is always wise to inspect the record within, as some of the vinyl is in no better shape than a typical thrift store donation. In terms of comic books, I will occasionally strike a great deal on a long out of print graphic novel at a reasonable asking price--usually the listing near the ISBN bar code. Comically Speaking is cluttered to a degree, and a few of their business practices do seem a bit shady. As with most, independently run businesses in the collectibles market the employees seem to have their share of good and bad days. There are certainly comic book shops that outshine this one in terms of pricing and customer accommodation, but there are more corrupt outfits out there. If you can maneuver around some of the random acts of bullheadedness from certain members of the staff, and pick through some of the more absurdly priced piles or boxes (some of these you may have to physically move with a strong arm,) your patience will benefit your know how in this shop. read more

Rip off. We sold them some boxed action figures and they gave us store credit in the form of a gift card...and never told us the credit would expire in 6 months. When we went to extend the credit they refused. Better off ordering over eBay. If you have action figures to sell, don't take them to Comically Speaking in Reading. read more

What can i say about this place that hasnt already been said about my asshole? For those of you who dont know anything about my asshole, Its dirty, smelly, and way over priced. Now back to the topic at hand, these people here are more rude than an angry dominican at a supermarket. The guy with the tank tops on his chest everyday has to be the second biggest prick i have ever met. The one with the pony tail takes the cake for number one. I asked how much one of their many unpriced items were and he says "I have no idea" and proceeded to attempt at (what i assume he thought was flirting) with an unknown female customer. This place is an absolute joke! I went in recently to check the place out because it was one of the last comic store in the area I have not been in. What a huge waste of gas!!!! While I was looking through the new releases I picked up a comic called Lost Vegas from Image comics. It looked like a Variant but wasn't marked. Next thing I know I have a wannabe biker telling me that its ten dollars and that I need to give him that back??? The thing is I didn't really care except that the guy behind the counter was a total ass. This store could have so much potential but its seriously like the blind leading the blind. The funniest thing about this store is that a couple weeks ago a friend of mine grabbed two Sex variants(another Image comic). They got them for 3.50...LOL. They are selling for $50 and up on ebay. The people who worked at this store were unfriendly and basically yelling at each other the whole time I was there. Its a shame because this store has serious potential but its an absolute mess. To the owner: figure out how to properly order comics and get people who can actually do the job of putting them on the shelf. Comic book Heaven!! Took my 11 year old daughter there because she is a big Marvel fan! I couldn't believe my eyes! I have loved super heroes and comics as a kid and wish I had a place like this! But hold on it gets even better!There's also old records, cd's, movies and mainly vintage and comic book related toys!I Its not big space wise but huge in selection!I have lived in Reading for 15 years and can't believe this treasure is in my town! 2 out of five due to the few times I've gone in there for something really specific - they had it. But yeah, like so many other reviewers, the staff need some real work. It's weird, because I used to love hanging out at Comically Speaking in the Billerica Mall during the mid 90's and you'd think you could catch the same vibe here, years later. But no, there's a odd feeling of "they don't want you here" going on. In the old days, you'd just hang around a bit, drawing people into conversations about all thing comics and geeky, the owners, employees and customers all getting in on it, now you walk in and it's find what you want and get out. That's the ONE thing that's holding this place back from being huge. Even Newbury Comics, a chain no less, has no issues with people straggling around, as long as you buy at least something and don't shoplift. I grew up in Reading and are aware of the town have a sizable "old money" (read: snob) contingency, so why not make the place the working class kids can catch a break from? read more

Never go to this store to sell anything. Guy will rip you off for every cent he can get. Make sure you know your facts when you go in there. Owner offered me 20 bucks for over 200 LP's. Of course there is wear and tear on them, most are 50 years old. But the guy is selling them for no less than $1 a piece in the back! $20 for 200? Please. I was warned prior to going in that he was a cheap jerk but went anyways. Wrong move. He shook my hand, said he would offer a fair price, and told me to drive all the way back home to grab the rest of the records. We love this place! I find it has more stuff than most stores. I have been going here for more than 3 years and if what you look for today is not there, it just might be tomorrow. i was checking out some used DVDs and none of them had prices on them. i asked two staff members for help. One could barely speak English, and the other seemed just clueless in general. To be fair, the first guy did try to call the owner for a price, but i guess he didn't feel like picking up his phone. They end up estimating ten dollars for a former Blocker buster video rental. not surprising though, seeing how everything in the place seemed outrageously priced to me. If i do end up going back, it will only be for the fifty cent comic bin. i think every comic book place should have one. read more

I was a repeat customer. Used to buy all of my video games and records there. They have a decent selection of both at reasonable prices. But the old man that works behind the counter got mad and yelled at me for opening up the Sega Genesis games. I was merely checking to see if they have instruction manuals and if the cartridges were in good condition. He also accused me of doing this the day before when I wasn't even in the store. This place has such potential to be an amazing store, yet every chance of that is blown by the extremely unfriendly and rude employees, and the extremely overpriced items. The workers never greet you and give judgmental looks as you go up and down the aisles. Also, they always close earlier than their sign says. This results in being rudely hounded by the workers until you finally give up and leave. All of this could be excused if they actually had some good deals, but everything is about double the price of what you would find it for on Amazon or eBay.
