I was looking for a handyman…read more Sam Stein, the patriarch came to my house April 25, 2019, reviewed my needs, gave me a price and wrote up a contract. Sam is the head of this family business. He's 78 and has worked in this business his whole life. HE KNOWS A LOT OF PEOPLE . . . to get things done in the house -- and outside the house. The first contract was to deconstruct parts of the basement to make way for Woods Basement Systems to re-pier and anchor the house: the bar and the setee; install a new downspout for the second floor, so all water wasn't running in one direction; correct the gutter direction so the water flow was balanced between the two downspouts; rescreen the patio door (scratched to death by dogs, and hillbillied by me); replace the pull-chain light in the closet under the basement stairs; put new rubber lining on the French Door out to the deck; and replace the floodlight in the back yard. The second contract was May 3, 2019, to construct a French Drain, which required six guys in ONE day to dig, place and refill soil. Sam drew pictures, so I knew what was going on -- especially to make sure this was occurring on my property. Sam talked to my neighbor, and I did, too. SAM KNOWS PEOPLE!! The third contract was June 17, 2019, to remodel the hall bath on the second floor. I selected the cabinets at Lowe's with Helen Gregory. Sam's son, Andy, and I selected the countertop to match the marble I already had (rather recently) in the tub area. Andy did all the measuring for the cabinets. And I was not replacing the floor. White tile . . . why argue? Everything was moving smoothly until Woods Basement Systems said half of the front wall, including in the cedar closet, needed to come down to make way for the anchors. That changed things up a lot. And it changed all the prices, and it changed the timing. I was frantic. Nobody flinched -- just took it in stride. THESE THINGS HAPPEN!! A lot of work/improvement came to my house from Sam Stein. And much happiness to me. Throughout all of this, Sam would drop by almost every day to ensure things were moving along and moving appropriately to my liking and to his specifications. The hall bathroom remodel was finished in mid-December. It is gorgeous! And all of the other work was supremely performed. These are great people. Sam, his son Andy and son-in-law Rich (the major painter, stucco guy and trimmer) -- all did a fantastic job!!

I was given two start dates that were never fulfilled. I didn't get the bid contract until 3 1/2 weeks later. This company then attempted to over charge with added labor per his contract to 5 different areas in a very small laundry room (4×7'). Price to put up 4 pieces of wood on the wall from Target store $415.19 .00 price + labor. Labor for trim and panel $276.38 Labor for vinyl flooring + material that I already paid for. $744.54 room size w 7.125x9.08 Labor to install cabinets $566.25 3 cabinets totally $3,150.00 498.00 To paint the wall for this very small room. Thoroughly 5 cans of paint he wanted $2,750.00 This totally for this small room came out to be $10,172.99 and Jeremy Phillips at Strong Arm remodeling and construction, pun intended strong armed me for $2,086.50. I gave Jeremy half the money to start the job and when I called him the day before regarding my receipt and to question him about my contract he started asking me about a job that my husband did on the garage that I originally got a bid for him on which had absolutely nothing to do with my laundry room. However, with us being health care professionals we weren't home to have the job done on the garage anyway. We were both deployed for work. As with this guy, he never follownoed up and now he wants to tell me this is why he is charging me a restocking fee on a contract I never signed regarding my garage. Nevertheless, as for the work on my laundry room, that will be a DIY project too because business owners like Jeremy Phillips sheds a negative light amongst many businesses especially independents. Also, he treated me like I didn't have options and then he had the nerves to say several time he was trying to help us out while trying to over charge us. There is really something to be said about business owners that see the customer as wrong regardless of the of the third rate treatment they bestow upon the customer. I would highly recommend using a company other than Strong Arm for any home improvement or construction needs as per my terrible experience with such a lackluster and inconsiderate professionals if they can even be called such.

He's responsive, friendly, and well priced. He may not be the least expensive, but he's certainly not the most expensive, and he and his crew do great work. I can't recommend him enough and have already sent several of my close friends his way! When we bought our house 5 years ago, we immediately recognized that the untouched basement had unlimited potential, and started dreaming of all of the possibilities. Finally this spring, we got quotes from 3 different contractors. Dan's price was reasonable and definite, and he showed that he wanted the business and could do the job. I was nervous that the basement wouldn't live up to my high expectations, but we took the leap of faith. I am SO GLAD we did. The job proceeded on schedule and on budget (at least on Dan's side - I went a little overboard on some of my choices of materials). Dan's employees and subcontractors are all polite and professional. Especially Pete, who I think is both an incredible carpenter with unmatched workmanship and also just one of the nicest, most caring guys you will ever meet. Dan and Pete brought my vision of a little Mouse House/Harry Potter nook under the stairs to life based on Pinterest photos and our shared drawings. We also did a secret room with a trick bookcase. Everyone who sees these rooms now is beyond impressed and wants to know my contractor's phone number. As a detail-oriented person (and an attorney), I had tons of "punch lists" and questions along the way. Dan received every single one of them with a smile and a positive attitude, which was so reassuring and made the whole experience so pleasant for me. He even welcomed my lists as a good way for us to stay in communication and keep track of all of the details. Ultimately, the job was completed in July of 2018, and I am thrilled to say that my basement dreams came true, exceeding all of my high expectations. All of the workmanship is top quality - the lines are straight, the cabinets are perfectly aligned, the doors are level, the electrical and plumbing and drywalling is all done right. If I find anything that needs to be adjusted, I know Dan will handle it. At this point, the only thing left for me to do is pay off my home equity loan and then hire Dan to update my upstairs kitchen and bathrooms. I can't wait.

The entire process was very smooth from start to finish and everyone who showed up to do the work were very kind and professional. We were kept informed with what work would be done each day and they stuck to the schedule as promised. David Neu originally came out and listened to what we wanted, added a few great suggestions, put together and sent us a very detailed drawing of what the finished project would look like. He was open to recommending a plumber since I did not want to wait over 8 weeks to get the plumbing side of the work done. Definitely the type of people I like to do business with.
