Great food, but NOT a BYO joint. I recommend any of the messes, but am fond of Grandpas. If you want BYO, the Wellesley location still is....a 'single' mess will get you 2 1/2 meals out of it and is $8-$12. This is a wonderful place to go! The menu is gigantic, and the prices are fairly reasonable, especially considering the great portions you are served. The food is ready to go or on the table within 10 minutes of ordering, and it was unbelievably good. The only downside is that parking is somewhat limited (on street if you can find it, or in another store's lot illegally.) Comella's is awesome. The small dining space is clean and comfortable, but I prefer to take out. There's a guy at the small wine shop across the street who asks me if I'm "in sales" every time I go in (I'm not)...kind of odd (offensive?), but still a good 1-2 punch: mess from Comella's + a cheap bottle of wine from the guy across the street = perfectly relaxed and slightly drunken evening at home. Horrific customer service. Had a terrible incident at the West Newton store where a young worker berated me, my 9 year old son and his friend...COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE! I made several attempts to bring this to the attention of the owner, to no avail. Matt Comella got in touch with me weeks after the incident and after two requests, and then blatantly ignored my request for a call back. Perhaps he just doesn't care. The one woman I did speak to from another store was pleasant and apologetic, but it's really not up to her. Maybe Gene would be more interested, but there's no way to reach these people. So... if you want the young help in their teens/20s to berate you not once, but twice, then go to Comella's. If you want great pizza in West Newton I suggest waiting for Sweet Tomatoes to open again. Don't waste your time or money on this dump. Paying customers deserve MUCH better!!! read more

Tonight I had the most unbelievable experience at this restaurant. 20 minutes after receiving my dinner and glass of wine, my party was told that "the girls" had to leave because it was closing time. "Would we, as customers, please finish and leave"! We were threatened by the owner who said, "I am calling the police" because, "you refuse to leave"! We were harrassed and finally left! Loved the Italian mess with sausage, meatballs, onions, peppers and mushrooms! My daughter and I should have split a single order though as I was more than full just eating half. Great casual place that served homemade food in fast food time. I'd go back if I'm ever in this part of the country again. My only criticism would be the quality of the fresh tomatoes in April. Not a fan of this place and it's unfortunate because I work next door. It's a great concept, homemade pastas and messes but the food just isn't good. I've had a variety of things and there's always something not great about it. One time I got gnocchi with oil and garlic and it was so drenched in oil and encased in garlic I had to go back. The salads are often sad looking. The chicken is pounded SO thin there's barely any meat left. I used to go here often for convenience but can't stomach it anymore. read more

The red sauce is nothing short of magnificent, and it is highly addictive. My fiance and I love Comella's! It's the tastiest and cheapest homemade Italian food in town. I highly recommend the messes, lasagna, stuffed shells, and ravioli. I'm a particularly big fan of the squash ravioli, but I recommend getting it to go with no sauce, or getting the sauce on the side--too much sauce will overpower the squash taste. I'm vegetarian, and they have so many good options! My fiance is a meat-eater, and he often orders something involving chicken, meatballs, and/or sausage, and he's always satisfied. For dessert, get a tiramisu to go, bring it home, and add a tablespoon of rum to the bottom. Amazing. Why I gave it four stars instead of five: 1. It gets a little crowded at times, especially right after a movie lets out at the West Newton Cinema, which is practically next door. There aren't many tables, and there's no waiting area, whether you're waiting for a table or take-out. 2. Some of the menu items are underwhelming. Skip the garlic bread. Skip the caprese (fresh mozzarella) salad/sandwich. The alfredo sauce is very salty, the pesto sauce is very oily, and the oil/buter/garlic sauce is not well blended. The parmesan cheese they put on top is also pretty salty. Also worth knowing: You order at the counter and seat yourself, but the staff will bring your food to you when it's ready, if you're eating there. read more

Nice kids working there, but the food isn't good. I got the Chicken Broccoli Alfredo with ziti, and it was flavorless. The broccoli was in huge chunks, undercooked, and had no flavor. Comella's is not a BYOB. Because it was on this site, and the reviews were favorable, we tried it last night. So I've ordered our meals, and ask if they would open the wine that we brought. The guy who took my order referred me to the woman who was handling the phone orders. When I asked her about opening the wine she told me that they are not a BYOB, and haven't been for at least four years. Didn't any of the reviewers think this might be an important point on a site dedicated to BYOB restaurants? read more

I had lunch for the first time at Comella's, W. Newton. My cousin and I shared a large cheese pizza, sampled a meatball and a sausage. The pizza came out under cooked. The dough was partially cooked and had to go back into the oven. The pizza in comparison to others pizza shops that I frequent was mediocre (when cooked).. Perhaps I am especially picky. Being Italian, I usually make my own, both thin crust and Sicilian style. The meatball was not bad. but the sauce was heavily seasoned that it covered up the taste of the tomatoes. I didn't try the sausage so I cannot comment on it. but with that too, the sauce was very heavily seasoned. My friend who had the sausage asked for a piece of bread and they wanted to charge $ 4.00 for a bread roll. We wouldn't mind paying a $1.00 for a piece of bread but $4 is a rip off. We will not be going back, nor will I recommend it. I live in the North Shore area and learned there is one not far from me in Melrose, but I certainly will not be going there either. read more

Love it. Our easy date-night choice - pick up movie tickets, hit Comella's for a chicken parm on homemade fusilli with a couple glasses of Chianti, then mosey over to the theater. The best part - they are so cool with our two kids when we have Saturday dinner there. It's a cozy joint, the antithesis of that family-style Italian stripmall chain, and it works perfectly for us. This place is the definition of 'hole in the wall' but the food is awesome! I had some sort of 'mess' which was a mix of different kinds of pastas with sauce and then whatever you wanted on top (eggplant, meatballs, sausage, chicken, shrimp, etc). I was really surprised by the quality of the food... it's just like Mom used to make! One point off for the horrible parking situation and the fact that they don't have a bathroom (that's a real minus for me!). Comella's is a Newton institution, and they have just opened up a Deli a few doors down...but Comella's itself cannot be beat. Their mess plates are a huge serving of pasta, meats, sauces, and cheese. If you are hungry, get one plate for yourself, but if not its best to share. Highly reccomended! I don't get the appeal of this place. Every pizza place in NJ basically serves the exact same menu as Comella's only with better quality. I have been back to Comella's a couple times since my positive experience there, and unfortunately, each experience since has been poor. Most recently my fiancee and I ordered two dishes for take-out. Pasta with chicken and alfredo sauce for him and chicken parm with extra marinara for me. Both were total failures. His alfredo sauce was like nothing I have ever seen--it was gloppy and stuck to the pasta in little chunks. Even after he heated it up, he couldn't get the sauce to mix with the pasta...it just stayed stuck to the linguine in little bits and tasted like a grainy but soft mixture of Parmesan cheese and butter. My chicken parm had barely any cheese on it and all the sauce for the pasta was soaked up by the very heavily breaded chicken cutlet. And they forgot to include the extra marinara I ordered. The resturant is a little hole in the wall, with small tables and not much decour to speak of, but the huge menu with pasta galore makes up for it! Well this review is of the "mess" I got the Grandpa mess with sausage and meatballs. First in terms of sheer volume of meat the mess gets 5 stars. And really that's the problem. There's too much meat and not enough pasta and cheese. The cheese is ricotta and not mozzarella which I prefer. The meatballs were first rate but I disliked the sausage's texture. Also the sauce is somewhat acidic. Because of all the sauce and lack of pasta a slice of toasted italian bread would be nice. I realize this place is very popular and stars are a subjective thing. Maybe the shells would be more to my liking. Very small place so you'll likely either do take out or wait if you want to eat here on a Friday or Saturday. Like Jillian Q. I almost always get a Mess (pasta dish) to share with the family and a meatball or chicken parm sandwich. Their pizzas are great and cost $5! So my gf and I walked around the area popping in and out of places looking for a bite and we went for Comella's. We've been in Newton for about a year but hadn't been so we were probably due. First problem was that ordering ahead makes a little more sense since after I ordered I looked like a dope standing in the middle of the place. (all the tables were full). It was fast though so I got out of there pretty quick. Portions are a good size. Shrimp scampi was good, though a little light on the shrimp. Grandpa's mess was really good. The sausage was incredible. I didn't dig the lasagna. The cheese was just too rich and something about the sauce. Ill probably go back and try a few different things. read more
