The servings here are absolutely insane. 3 people could split one dish and still probably have leftovers. This place is A-OK in my book and probably one of the best restaurants around. As other yelpers mentioned, portions are huge here. The bread that they serve here is giant, but really lacking in flavor and should probably be used as a burger bun. I ordered the Pink Pepper pasta and had them throw some mushrooms in. It was nice and spicy! The mix with the diavolo and alfredo sauce was just right. However I wish they would have mixed the mushrooms to absorb some of the flavor instead of just placing them on top and cooked in a separate pan. Also, be warned, this place loves putting minced garlic on their pastas. So if you can't eat too much garlic b/c of digestive issues, etc., you should ask them to hold the garlic. If you do end up sitting in a booth, be prepared that they are wooden with no padding. So after an hour or so, your butt WILL go numb. I'm pretty sure they do this to get people out more quickly, as this place can get packed. read more

I've been to Combine Brothers probably a half dozen times over the past year and have NEVER been treated so disrespectful at any restaurant I've visited. My friend ordered the Diavolo sauce with his pasta and I ordered the pink pepper sauce. When our entrees arrived the friend of mine thought he ordered a different sauce than what showed up but it was the diavolo sauce. Our server was gracious enough to ask him if he would like a side of the pink pepper or Alfredo sauce to mix into his entree. I asked the server if she could take his entree back and ask the kitchen team if they could add the sauce to the entree. Our server (again, very helpful and gracious) took the entree back and within a few minutes my friend's pasta with the revised sauce showed up. When our Server walked away from our table, there was an older lady sitting at the end of the bar who 'yelled' for the server to see her. This older lady asked, "What's that guy's problem?" We could hear the entire conversation. The server describe what happened and how they were able to fix it and the older lady's response was "Too bad!" The older lady then began rolling her eyes and shaking her head in disgust as if we or the server had done something wrong. When our server came back to our table, I asked her who was the lady at the end of the bar. Our server told us she was one of the owners. The lady (part owner) had already left and we asked to speak with another owner or someone in charge. A manager came to our table and apologized and told us that the lady (part owner) creates problems like this quite often and that he has had several guest and employee complaints. To top it off, when we received our bill for 2 pasta entrees and three beers the total was $141 plus change. Of course, that just added insult to the bad experience. To the Combine Brothers (part owners)...you should keep your mother (if she is the RUDE lady that likes to sit at the end of the bar and treat guests and employees like "second" class citizens, you should keep her out of the restaurant. The food, the salad is some lettuce put on a plate with some pink dressing that tastes bland and boring. The "homemade" bread has no flavor at all - very bland and boring too. Combine Brothers puts on quite a spread. If you like Italian food - real Italian-American immigrant food like grandma Cione used to make - but somehow better - then this is your place! I've eaten at Combine's at least a dozen times, and I've never had a bad meal. The portion sizes are large - almost huge. You're gonna need a doggie bag, and you'll get another whole meal out of it. Their menu is focused on pasta, as you might expect. And they have a build-your-own kind of ordering. Choose your pasta noodle, choose your sauce, choose your extras. The choices are numerous. In fact, I don't even know what half the sauces are (there's explanations next to them). I almost always get the same thing because it is so darn good: baked ziti with traditional red sauce and crumbled sausage. Try it, you won't be disappointed. They have other entrees as well, including some very good pizza. It is thin crust oven fired style pizza. You can get all the standard toppings. All dinners also come with bread rolls. These aren't your ordinary rolls. They're hard crusted and about the size of a baby's head. They're fresh baked and delicious. Be careful though, you'll fill up on the bread without thinking because it is that good. You need to save room for the main course - it's gonna be big. No one leaves Combine Brothers' hungry. Sadly, I couldn't give them a full five stars. That's not because of anything to do with the food or service. Those two things are great. The atmosphere of the place is lousy. The decor is some kind of strange cheap industrial minimalist. There is diamond-plate steel on the floor for walk-ways. (That's the OSHA style diamond-plate, not the jewelry kind of diamond.) The tables are bolted to the floor, and all of the seating is made from heavy plywood with a coat of paint. (Can you say uncomfortable?) You can't rearrange the tables or seating at all, so it's not a good place for a group that wants to sit all together if you're over 6 people. The lights look like the ones you might find dangling from a wire in a Russian gulag. They have the protective metal cages over the bulbs - almost like you're in prison - or maybe an old steel mill. Also, its a busy place around dinner time and it is relatively small. So there's always a 40 minute wait on Friday and Saturday evenings, and the wait staff subtly pressures you into eating and leaving. So it's not a good place to go relax with a group of friends to catch up over dinner. The place doesn't have the relaxed "Come in, sit down, mange!" kind of Italian welcoming feel. Anyway, go and check it out. Your taste buds will thank you. Just ignore the lack of atmosphere and focus on the food. read more

4.5 stars How can Combine Brothers have an average score of three stars?!! I got into town late on a Saturday night and had gotten lost for a while. The desk clerk told me to make a left and I'd see several restaurants. I selected Combine Brothers and was happy to see a cute, somewhat crowded spot. They only had beer and wine, and the Woodbridge wine I selected - which I normally would have turned my nose up at, since it's so ubiquitous - turned out to be surprisingly good. They had a HUGE selection of pasta dishes with a myriad of toppings. I selected bowtie pasta with white clam sauce, and the serving size was incredibly big. I was happy to have the leftovers the next night, as I had a medical emergency with my cat and sure didn't feel like cooking. The salad I received first was decent but nothing special, and I rejected the bread since it fills me up too much. Nice customers, too, as I talked with a nice woman back in town for a funeral. Pity I'm going to be passing through Hermitage again soon on a Sunday, since they'll be closed..... read more

Do not get an appetizer unless you want that as your meal as dinner portions are enormous. All the pasta dishes that I have tried are very good. Mild spaghetti sauce very good flavor. Service has always been very good on my many trips here. Only real drawback is the seating in the booths put you real close to your neighbor so privacy is limited. The loaves of bread, although grand in size, were presented cold, along with hard-to-spread chilled butter. Pasta was swimming in water. Waitress never refilled water. In fact we barely saw her. Our entree arrived after having finished only half of our salads. We also ordered an appetizer, and that came with the salad, instead of beforehand. In a town recently taken over by chain restaurant after chain restaurant, it would be appreciated if the local establishments put forth more effort. Service was terrible, booth next to us came after us and got served before us. When i went to find a worker, had to go to the bar to get someone, told her we have been waiting an hour and haven't got our food. She said she would check on it. She showed up shortly with our food and said that our waitress got involved with a big party and could not get back to us. Went to Combines for dinner with my family and ordered pasta with tomato sauce. I'm vegetarian and the menu did not disclose that the sauce was cooked with a meat base. I was not informed of this until I found a chunk of meatball in my food. It's deceiving to not say that on your menu. After I brought up the issue they offered me more food which was the LAST thing I wanted from them. Will never be back. They also messed up my mothers and sisters food and fought that they didn't. Not sure if I want to rate a 2 or 3. On our way home to Pittsburgh so we thought we'd try it! We had been here before back in the 90s and it was so much better then. Alfredo sauce was ok, but not good. I will doctor it up when I get it home. Husband enjoyed his, but then he'll eat anything. Echoing the other less than 5 star reviews. Service is good and super friendly. Food is just ok. The sauces and meats are the best things they have going for them. The pasta tastes like it probably comes out of a box though. The side salads are sad. It's just way too expensive for boxed pasta and iceberg lettuce salads. I'd prefer far less in portion size for better quality. Perhaps I'm not in the majority though. If you are a foodie, you will be disappointed here. First let me say that for 20 years Combines has been our favorite Italian restaurant. We have waited a long time for the return of the Lasagna. We arrived at 4:30 today, there was no wait and just a few tables were filled. Three of us ordered lasagna. When the food arrived all three of the lasagnas were on different plates/bowls. One order of lasagna was in a salad bowl ( literally in a salad bowl, the salad bowl was still on the table and it was identical). One order was in a larger bowl and it was spread out on a one inch layer over the entire bowl. The waitress said it fell apart. It looked like mush. The third portion was very small and on the oval large dinner plate that all the entrees are usually on. We just looked at them when the waitress put them down and said nothing. It was quite obvious there was an issue. Three identical orders and three different presentations. She finally said, " I asked why three different bowls and they said that they were out of plates" This was one hour after opening, the restaurant was a third full and they were out of plates? One was mixed up and mush from falling apart somewhere in the kitchen. The one in the salad bowl was small and had a lot of cheese and only two layers of noodles as well as the small piece on the dinner plate covered in sausage. The pasta was over cooked and the meatballs have been reduced to about a third of what they were before, although the prices have risen. The waitress was the first ever to not serve us well. We had to ask for bread after our salads and newer got a refill. What happened to my favorite place of all times? $9.00 to add scallops and you get 4 tiny ones. The bread was as good as always, but when I tried to buy some to take home...they only had day old bread. The restaurant was nearly empty and I know why. We drove out of our way to eat here (35 min) and came with a group of 10 and they were able to accommodate us on a week night! Everything from the appetizers to the rolls, salad and main entrees were fabulous! Our server was sweet as can be! You can tell the new owners have done such a nice job! I tried Combine Brothers for the first time and I was far from disappointed!!! The pasta was AMAZING. I ordered the Penne Alfredo pasta and the serving size was humongous. I was able to take home as much as I ate, and it tasted delicious reheated just as it was when it was fresh. The roll was massive, fluffy, and fresh. Who would have thought that in the Middlesex area of Pennsylvania you would find an authentic, legit place like this. Portions are large, red sauce and meatball were tremendous. This place sucks. Huge portions of,,, GARBAGE. Big bread rolls- no flavor. Salad right out of a bag. Meatballs taste like meatloaf. Marinara right out of a jar. Eggplant; soggy, cooked days ago. Carbonera; average at best. Cake so old & stale that it "clunked" when it fell over. $50 for two meals and the food was seriously bad; we left it on the table. The portions are large, big deal, the food sucks. This place has great hype; maybe it was good in the past, but not anymore. Only a hillbilly would like this now.
