Was good years ago but now it's not. We do a dating game where you go to one place for drinks, another for appetizers, another for dinner and last for a night cap and dessert. Well we picked Tanners because we liked it years ago and it was for our appetizers but boy it was bad. It came out colds d hard chunks in the meat of the stuff hot peppers. This place is hit or miss. Been three times. First time I was thoroughly impressed, 2nd time was so/so and the third was terrible. Food took forever and was undercooked and the waitress seemed checked out. Will try again, but there's better options in New Castle. read more

Ok, so admittedly the last time I was here was probably 15 years ago and I was a little curious to see what it was like now. Changes were definitely made to the exterior and it seemed like a pretty good face lift, but what on Earth happened to the interior?? Strange, unfinished quality to it...sort of like a 1980's Denny's or Friendly's stripped of half of its decorative touches. I can't really call it "minimalist"...very generic chain breakfast/lunch spot vibe...the whole place just seemed tired, uninspired, and depressing. I had the (fried) fish sandwich which was filling, but not very tasty or crispy....unripe flavorless pink pulpy tomato slices, so-so fries. Server was very pleasant and friendly. Possibly, overall my visit is deserving of 2 1/2 stars rather than 2, but definitely not a 3. I wouldn't return. read more

I ordered here today for lunch through DoorDash and thought my lunch was really good. I ordered a steak salad with ranch dressing. Although I don't think the tomatoes were washed throughly, it was really well put together and the ingredients were fresh, they use fresh cut lettuce and not bagged. The steak was well prepared and cooked to a perfect medium. I would order here again for lunch. read more

KEEP DRIVING! I stopped here for lunch yesterday... This place had the weirdest vibe .. dark, dingy... Right from go the server was rude .. spilled water on our table and never came back to wipe up and hen when I had to get up and ask her for napkins SHE ACTED PUT OUT! When ordering she seemed annoyed with our choices as if WE were inconvenient HER. With that said... our " blueberry" pancakes ca.e out with NO blueberries and my lamb hat I ordered medium rate came out BURNT! Perhaps had she not spent the time and effort being so rude she would have gotten out order correct!!!!! What a waste of time and $$$$ ... Lettuce and veggies on salad were wilted and looked like it came out of the dumpster! SO DISAPPOINTING! :( We will never go back!!! read more

This place has walls covered with pictures of famous baseball players and sports memorabelia...fun to peruse while waiting for your meal. Pirates manager, Chuck Tanner, lived in New Castle and formerly owned this restaurant. Good food, and pleasant atmosphere. read more

Ok here's the deal... I like this place. I have been here many times and like the food but mainly go for breakfast. I was excited to go get some breakfast food with my wife on a Saturday morning. Saturday mornings are for sleeping in, going slow, and recovering from the week so I did not go to McDonalds, I went to a place known for a good breakfast. We got to Tanners around 11:15 and were told that the kitchen had already put away their breakfast food... Does this mean that they put the eggs back in the refrigerator? That the bacon was frozen? That the bread for toast was twisted up and put back on the shelf? That the pancake batter was... oh forget it. They told us they could make us an omelette but not breakfast?!? I was a bit frustrated that on a Saturday they shut down breakfast by 11:00. We made our way to Ryders where breakfast is served all day. Disappointed but recommend. We eat at Chuck Tanner's often and have done so for many years. We love the breakfast that they serve. My favorite meal is the stuffed breast of chicken that they serve on Sundays. The waitresses know us and take very good care of us. We have never ordered anything that we did think was fabulous. I love the Greek Omelet and many of their specials. Ordered the eggplant parmesan and half was undercooked the other half over cooked and so greasy that you could squeeze it out with fork. Also not very handicap friendly. Well for wheel chairs. How do you think someone by themselves are getting in the door with that ledge? Also we were only ones in there for a while so it shouldn't of been like that. I can't get over how the food was cold either. My son's fries were over cooked. When waitress asked if we needed boxes I said no it's to disgusting. Excellent for Breakfast? Maybe. Excellent for Dinner? Far from. Remember back in the eighties when fifties diners were a trendy thing? This sad restaurant is awaiting the day where the nineties make a comeback. While travelling through New Castle, I stopped at Chuck Tanner's, having known his history with the Pittsburgh Pirates. I was happy to see the upkeep of the place was impressive, and upon first sight. From the outside, it looks impressive. The atmosphere in the main dining area was that of a mid-90s 'ma-and-pa' restaurant, and I should have known to run at that point. The attached bar and the rest of the building are tastefully decorated in Tanner memorabilia, which is what you'd expect. Not knowing what to order because all the menu items were, well... average (seriously- there's nothing on the dinner menu that really stands out or sounds exciting), I ordered the burger, which was bland, basic, and screamed of mediocrity. The fries were okay. The price was about on par with comparable restaurants. There's absolutely nothing special or appealing. The gaudy wallpaper and outdated dining room atmosphere kills the impressiveness of the rest of the restaurant, which is sports-themed. You get the impression that Chuck Tanner wanted a sports grille kind of place, but also wanted a top-notch restaurant for it's day. It feels like a restaurant with an identity crisis; choosing both in one spot was probably a bad idea. But, all things considered, our waitress was extremely personable and made us feel right at home. The restaurant has no spice. The food has no spice. I hear the breakfast is wonderful. Try that. Avoid dinner unless you like average. read more

Had lunch there with a client on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The coffee was good and kept coming, and the wedding soup I had was very good, though it could have used a bit more substance, especially since that was my lunch. The other party had a huge burger that seemed like a good value for the price. The service was good, but maybe because of the day, the venue appeared a bit seedy. For New Castle this is one of the best eating establishments around. The portions are fair and the quality great. Even the wait staff can put a smile on your face if you are more inclined with appreciating service above presentation. In either case, exceptions always come and go in such a busy location and you should not miss the smelts if you are any kind of a Western PA native. First time here, not knowing what to expect as we drove up Rt 18 out of a "tired" section of New Castle and into what appeared to be small strip malls and chain eateries of all types. The smell of a really great combination of "home cooking" odors greets you upon entering - already the place seems inviting. The homemade chicken scappatelli soup is ahhhh-mazing in it's savory deep flavors. The chicken marsala is served with a delicate marsala sauce, nothing overpowering but accentuates the tender chicken breast and fresh crimini mushrooms. The wild rice medley is good - buttery and not overcooked. Our waitress was efficient, pleasant and professional in her serving. The owner makes his way around the restaurant to check in with both his regular and new patrons. He is welcoming and very friendly to converse with. It is obvious he takes great pride and gives attention to the overseeing & operational facets of his fine establishment! read more

I didn't think it would be my kind of resturant, but they do a really nice job. The salmon salad is my favorite, their smelts are great too!! Waitstaff is polite, friendly and attentive. We've never had a bad meal here. They have a nice area you can reserve for groups. Plus, with their menu, it a good place to go when people all want different things. read more

Unfortunately Tanner's was not a location we will be returning to. Upon arriving the wasn't anyone at the front to take our names, inquiry about the wait or otherwise. There was just a line of people waiting so we waited as well. After 10 mins the first party was sat and so on until it was our turn, which was about 30 mins after our arrival. The dining room was busy but there were several unoccupied tables that if bussed could have lessened our wait. Our order was finally taken 20 mins later; 10 mins for menus and another 10 for our non alcoholic beverages to be delivered and order taken. At that point, it took 50 mins for our two burgers and one order of chicken fingers and fries. During that time, it was very difficult to get a refill on our drinks. While we waited, tables emptied and we saw the host/manager/owner (idk) running food and beverages to the tables, bidding empty tables and seating a few more tables. The food was fine, nothing awesome but it didn't stink. I can't figure out if they were inadequately staffed or what exactly was lacking. We had to pay at a cashier (which is strange, it's not a diner). She proceeded to tell us that the wait was so long because it was homecoming at a school in the area and there were many high school football games going on and they're busy before the games start. This restaurant was recommended to us. This is a great diner for older folks who like fairly bland food, which is well-to over-cooked. My huband got the Sirloin, and it was good. I ordered the Delmonico cut steak, and it was not good...tough piece of meat that looked like someone wore it on their feet in the parking lot. Salad was good/generic; baked potato seemed 'old', and they served it with margarine. The bread in the bread-basket was really nice--crispy crust, soft, warm center (the best part of the meal). We also got beers and they were ice-cold (thank you!!). Very competent waitress who was attentative to our needs. I would suggest you avoid the Delmonico cut (stick to the sirloin). read more

Tanner's is another place I HAVE to eat at when I go home. The problem is choosing which meal to go there for. Breakfast-- huge omelettes, amazing french toast, and the best coffee I've ever had at a restaurant. Lunch--I can sum up in one word--burger--so yummy!
