The "hotel"was on the high street but no where close to the expected standards for a property in that location. The room just had the bare minimum amenities but what was worst was there was no shower! The bathroom just had a tub and a disconnected faucet of types attached to the shower. Since we reached late, it was the barman at the reception and he said he couldnt change our room and we would have to wait until morning to change rooms. Next day, when we went down to ask the lady (not sure if she manages or owns the place), 1. she seemed very nonchalant and just asked us to bath in the tub (umm not something you want to do when you are looking for a quick shower in the morning) and 2. when we pressed for a different room, she was not in the least bit apologetic and said that she couldnt do anything until after breakfast was over (9:30). And we waited until 10 am and when there was no sign of her coming and getting us, we had to go back down and remind her and she seemed very upset about it instead of being sorry and finally showed us another room with a shower. She didnt give us the key to the room and we had to keep the door propped open and shuttle between both rooms since the new room had no towels and was in the midst of being cleaned. We missed breakfast because of this and again the lady made no attempt to either apologize or offer to serve us anything to eat. There was no discount on the room rate either. So, not only were we late that morning to get started on our trip but it also ended up being a sour start given how things were handled. Would never go back and would recommend no one does either even if it is your last resort. I would rather sleep in my car than stay at this hotel!

We drove to the north from Edinburgh and decided to find a place to stay in Newtonmore. All B&Bs from our AA's guide were either booked out or closed. It was a rainy late afternoon, and then we crossed the Balavil Hotel. We didn't plan to stay in hotels, but this one looked like a cute guest house. So we entered. The guy at the reception was uber friendly and really funny. Of course they had a room for us he said, and also one with two single beds. The rate: £35 per person, including breakfast. Awesome! The hotel is quite old, but it totally matches the cute town of Newtonmore. Staying in a fancy new hotel would have been weird. The room was nice and clean, and the beds comfy. There's a bar in the lobby with a local ale on tap and some other scottish beers, and obviously Guinness. They also serve food I believe, we dined out though. After dinner we had a couple of beers and it was really cosy. Breakfast is served in the spacious dining room next to the lobby. It's buffet style, toast and coffee is served by the waitress. The food was okay, nothing very special. The breakfast is probably the hotels weakest part, but it was fine. A big plus: free WiFi for all guests! I would stay again.
