While the hotel is situated in a lovely little town, Pitlochry, and has a great history, the experience we had hear left a lot to be desired. There were some good things, but there were also a decent number of things that we were disappointed with.
When we first arrived, we were driving a rental car. Immediately beyond the entrance to the hotel, we noticed a large sign showing parking for the hotel was in the rear. A car ahead of us pulled in before us and then just sat there. Soon, a man came out and was talking to the car ahead of us. He stepped away, looked out direction, and then walked out of site. Immediately, the car ahead of us threw their car into reverse. We didn't know what to do, so we backed up. After the car ahead of us left (we assumed they were in the wrong spot and getting directions or something), so we pulled back into the drive and noticed there was a gate with a lock on it. Confused, since we knew this place had parking according to our booking, we too backed up and went to find street parking to check in. At check in, I asked the nice lady about the parking situation. Very pointedly she said (I'm paraphrasing), "yes, the parking is closed because of the fire". I had no idea what she was talking about--what fire? We learned later that there had been a fire at the hotel, but why wouldn't we be notified ahead of our trip and told that certain accommodations might not be available? The lady then told us there was public parking that we'd need to pay for down the road. It was a solid 3 blocks to have to cart our bags to the hotel, we had to pay EXTRA for the public parking even though we came expecting free parking at the hotel, we were not discounted for this inconvenience even though we asked, and the sign should definitely have been removed or covered with something like "excuse us, due to a fire, our parking is closed, we apologize for the inconvenience, but public parking is available down street". There was no indication that the parking was closed when we arrived.
The room was fairly small and the shower leaked out onto the floor, but those are smaller inconveniences. I imagine most people who visit Pitlochry are skiers or hikers and don't care much about the state of the room. Wifi was hit or miss in the room. read more
