I originally hired Marty to do a concrete overlay and stain of the living room and entry way of my home. Maybe I should've seen in coming when he forgot about our follow up meeting, but because his portfolio seemed so good and his prices were reasonable, I decided to go ahead with him with him anyway.
We agreed back in February that he would start the job in the middle of May, coinciding with my spring break to make it more the moving of the furniture more convenient
A week before the job was supposed to start, I email him to confirm, and here the headaches begin:

Good evening Ms Kristina,
So far we are on track for Monday, the current job I am working on his had a few quirks so I may need to apply wax on Monday morning but after that I will be there. Have decided if I am doing the demo and haul away so I know if I need to bring my demo tools?
Thank you for choosing us. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hi Marty,
Yes, you will be doing the demo of the entry and fireplace and carpet as discussed. Do you know around what time you'll be coming on Monday? How much was the first payment again?

I don't know what's going on. I've tried calling and e-mailing you with no response since 5 days ago. Please get back to me ASAP.

Good evening Ms Kristina,
I applogize for my lack of communication. I have no good explanation for not responding to your e-mails but my phone has been missing since Saturday so I have'nt gotten any of my calls since then. At this time I still have not found it, I believe it is in my shop somewhere, I looked for two hours this morning with no luck. All my tools for your project are loaded up in my trailor but I am still stuck on my project from last week. My client has changed direction three times since I last e-mailed you. I am currently on track to finish by Wednesday provided there are no more changes. I realize you have been on my schedule for a few months but unfortunately I have no control over a customers "artistic adjustments". I never start any new jobs until I have completed the one I am on completely, I promise to give you the same detailed attention you deserve.
Thank you for your Patience in this matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Marty,
We purposely scheduled this week because of my days off, and I have
cleared out the living room according to plan. It's a little
disappointing to be put on hold. Let me know when you will be
starting and finishing the job at my place. (626)***-****.

What's the status, Marty?

Good evening Ms Tan,
I understand how disappointed you must be. Unfortunately with the rain we have had the past two days I am now even father behind. The two things I have no control over is, weather/moisture and the decision process of a client. This current project I am on has run three full weeks (should have only been 1 week) due to moisture problem, moisture testing and the continued direction changes of my client.
Under normal circumstances your project will take 5-6 days providing I do not run into any abnormal situations like I experienced on this job. If you are still interested in having me do your floor I can start Monday, if you would prefer not to use my services I would completely understand.
Thank you for choosing us. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Good evening Ms Tan,
I just wanted to appologize for all the inconvienence I have cause you and your mom. Unfortunately I still have not completed my current project. It is because of this added delay that I feel it would be best if I stepped aside from working on your project.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to bid on your project.

I would've appreciated it if he was upfront to begin with. I understand a project has unforeseen circumstances, but I was just strung along the whole week looking at an empty living room and waiting for a phone call (which I never got).
At least he was apologetic, but it still doesn't excuse the fact that he backed out of our initial arrangement after a week-long delay. read more
