Well decorated indoor tasting room. A couple of benches for sitting. A couple tables indoors would have been nice. I sat at a bench and set my glass of wine on the ground. This place is so charming. Being the oldest winery in palisade and still family owned. They have the sweetest women here that take care of you. The flights are very reasonably priced and the fruit wine is refreshing and dangerously delicious. read more

For whatever reason, I ended up liking the wineries out in the farm country more than the one's more in town. Colorado Cellars is one of my favorites. It boasts that it is the oldest Colorado winery and has the most awards. They definitely have a good tasting room, with more than just wine to taste (although they have a lot of that). From whites, to reds, to fruit wines and meads - this place has it all. They take the time to tell you what to pair the wine with and have a ton of samples of salsa, chocolate and another salty and sweet snacks to try with your tasters. It made it a much nicer experience to sample, wonder, taste snacks and repeat. I would say this is a must on the Palisade wine tour! read more

This was by far the best winery (in my opinon) on my trip to Palisade! Take this with a grain of salt, since I am no sommelier; I just drink if it's good. Their pinot gris/noir is amazing; I actually could not believe I was having that caliber of pinot in Colorado; and I just returned from a trip tasting wines in Oregon. The mead is amazing; and so are their fruit wines. So much variety, and I don't think a single wine I had was even average. read more

Because I'm a classy bitch I likes my wine. Because I'm a klassy bitch my favorite wine is called Roadkill. Few people know that Colorado has an active wine region (it's not all snow-capped mountain), but tucked away on the Western Slope you'll find some of the best wines available. The region itself is still fairly young, growing since 1978 and gaining designation as a viticultural area in 1991 but they've come a long way. Colorado Cellars makes a wide array of fruit wines (hello pomegranate!), wine foods, desserts, oils, and of course the more typical wines. All you need to know is this: Roadkill red. This is a sweet red wine, not dessert-y sweet, but sweet none-the-less. Since I am nowhere near the state of Colorado any more my bottles of wine are imported and therefore stashed to be savored during special occasions (mainly days that end in Y). If that's not your thing you can find a ton of other bevvies to suit your taste, there's even white zinfandel :'( Whether you're classy or klassy there's something for you here (and if you're lucky at your local liquor store too!). read more

This vineyard gives you a glass and lets you sample everything. Be selective. Just a warning so you don't end up loving every wine you taste. Very friendly and a wide selection of wines. Our group came here this time to try their Colorado Trinity Champagne. Once again we were disappointed as they only bottle (by hand) in the off-season and were sold out. It would be nice to finally taste it as sparkling wine / champagne is a favorite of mine. Colorado Champagne is a legal name they have been working on. Others in my family love Roadkill Red for it's semi-sweet light red taste. This is a fun place and they sell other food items as well. Great and friendly service. read more

I can't believe how few reviews this place has for being a palisade staple! This is our favorite winery of the bunch. There is something for everyone here. They have whites, reds, fruit wines as well as amazing meads. Seriously the meads are 100X better than a certain meadery in town (I won't name names). The spiced nektar tastes like a spiced cider perfect for warming up for my thanksgiving. Some of our other favorites are the alpenrose - so light! The roadkill red is also good. From the fruit wines I recommend the huckleberry for something different. Be careful- it's easy to be overserved here from all the dif wines you can sample. The cute store also sells great wine themed things as well as dips etc for very reasonable prices. read more

We loved this winery! I took my husband there for his birthday and they took exceptional care of us. The tastings were wonderful and we also enjoyed an additional glass out in the gazebo. It was a perfect experience overall. We will definitely be returning. read more

Colorado's Oldest Winery. And they have their tasting room game down. 5 complimentary tastings, with additional tasters for $1 each. You can taste everything they make, save one, their sparking wine. Which makes sense when you think about it. They have a large number of traditional grape varietals, along with half a dozen fruit wines, and two wine-style meads. Everything I tasted, I liked a great deal. Most bottles sell for $15 each, although they had a couple on sale for $10 each. As others have noted, they are a little off the beaten path, but they are not difficult to find. Paved roads until last 1/8 mile. Dog friendly, but not RV friendly (lot is too small). We were in the same weekend as the Palisade Peach Festival, so it was a little busy and cramped, but the counter staff kept things moving very smoothly. A must stop on your Grand Valley AVA tour. read more

This place is rude and impersonal. You used to be able to sample as many of their wines as you'd like. Now, you are given a tiny wine glass and asked to sample no more than 6. There is a sign that says if you're only there to sample and not buy anything, it's a $7.00 charge. One of the workers came out from behind the counter to yell at my friend for filling the glass "more than a third full." Jesus, if you're gonna be lazy enough that you can't sample wine for your guests, don't be mad when they accidentally pour too much. Also, an important part of wine tasting is talking about the wine - its appearance, aroma, taste, etc. You won't get that here. I won't bother with this place again. read more

We liked and didn't like a few things here. Really liked: the self pour tastings (like a water cooler but a line up of wines) Really didn't like: we were offered and accepted tastings, but we're not told there was a $7.50 charge for them. You get it back if you buy a bottle (most are $15 - $20) but we're not told this before saying yet to the tastings. We liked only 2 and 1 enough to buy it. The staff were very friendly and they have a cute little shop with some interesting things. So good but not great. read more

I took a mixed case of wine home with me two weeks ago and it is almost half gone (damn it!) so my approval should be quite evident. Only losing one star because I noticed the bottles indicate the fruity wines are actually grape wine blended with juice, and I found that to be a bit odd... Or maybe I just don't know anything about wine. Don't know. Sure do love drinking these bottles though. SO many varieties... Why not try them all!!! ;) read more

Best fruit wines in Colorado. We stopped in for a couple of bottles of cherry wine and left with 2 cases. All the wines they produce are just super, very flavorful, great color, and the taste is superior to most of the other wines from the area. Well make another trip back real soon. read more

I feel bad giving this place 1 star, so I'm going with 2. Everyone in the group disliked pretty much every wine we tried. Everything was sickeningly sweet. Their characterization of dry is WAY off. Some of the fruit wines were good, but again, SO SO SO sweet even for fruit wines! When we asked for a 'spitoon' for our designated driver, the hostess gave us a weird look and said no of course not. OK, so not the classiest place. Pours were fairly generous if you end up liking the wine, and the little gift shop area is cute. The grounds aren't super nice either. I don't remember bottle prices because none of us wanted to purchase any so i can't comment on that. Overall, I would say skip this place unless you really like really sweet wines. read more

You have to be REALLY committed to stopping here, because it's off the beaten path so to speak. It is out of the area that most of the wineries are, but I am very glad we made it by. When we got there we had to press a door bell to be let in. They actually let you pour your own glasses here from a little station for some of their wines. In talking to the sommelier she said that the Road Kill Red was their best selling, unfortunately I'm not a big fan of the reds unless it's something sweet like a Port so I didn't really care for it. I did enjoy both varieties of Rieslings that they had, and ended up purchasing the lighter of the two. Apparently, this place is actually Colorado's oldest winery. One thing I noticed I don't particularly care for is that their fruit wines actually have grape wine in them, it's not just straight fruit. Anyways, I am looking forward to seeing them at the Wine Festival in Castle Rock in the near future so I can buy some more. read more

Walked into this winery expecting great wines for as old as it is. Definitely get what you came for. They have a great selection from dry Chardonnay to a great spiced honey wine. They have a good red selection and some fruit wines as well. The staff were very friendly and have been their long enough to know plenty about the vineyards. We biked up a rocky long driveway to visit and we're sorely disappointed. 15 miles into our 26 mile winery your bike ride we were so thankful when we saw cheese for sale in a refrigerator inside. I picked up one of the individually wrapped cheeses and took it up to the counter to pay for it. A woman behind the counter (a 3 year employee) told me they have a rule that cheese may not be set on the counter. She indicated that if I bought the cheese I would have to go eat it outside of the front door. I promptly placed the cheese back in the refrigerator. The woman then explained that the owners do not want people hanging out too long at the tasting counter so they can get more tasters thru. So unwelcoming, embarrassing and rude. We were as unimpressed by the service as we were by the wines. Not worth the rocky uphill path to get there. read more

While I would never presume to classify myself as an expert I have been around some pretty good wine over the years. I found the people at Colorado Cellars knowledgeable and in possession of a good selection of wine. I really liked their 2016 Syrah and '18 Pinot Grigio. I also can recommend their Pinot Noir. Unlike many Pinot Noirs which struggle to climb out of an almost bland and shallow existence, their Pinot Noir comes from older vines and the flavor and depth reflect that. I have found over the years that people's tastes and preferences are very different. I am amused when people try to force wines and people into categories and labels. In my experience they are all different and to complicate matters more....they change. Every year. Often there is little substance to what "experts" opine and those opinions are actually an effort to somehow assert pedigree and membership in a caste. When reflecting on wines and pedigrees Bob Mondovi once said...."The purpose of wine is to wash down my pasta." read more

I am in New Mexico, but I have friends in Grand Junction that send me two bottles of Colorado Cellars Alpenglo Riesling now and then. I find it to be a wonderful white wine; not too sweet, nor too dry...it is perfect. I cannot believe there would be any negative reviews posted, about the Colorado Cellars wines, but, after all, it is 'to each his own'. I would love to find it here locally, but if I can't I am hoping they will ship bottles to Albuquerque! OR, if their Alpenglo Riesling IS available in an outlet here, I will be thrilled. It is the perfect wine for both my husband and my tastes. read more

We visited on our trip through Colorado Wine Country on Labor Day Weekend 2013. We were very much looking forward to this winery (oldest in CO) after all we had read about it. We were disappointed. Their fruit wines they will pour for you. All of their other (grape!) wines you must dispense yourself into your very mini tasting glass. No explanation. Nothing. Do they really care about their wines or not? We got the impression that they were living off their reputation. read more
