it was a nice stop into Hermosa Vineyards the other day. We were in town for a few days, working remote, and our goal was to try a few wines in the area. We had already strung together a nice wine tour on the Friday and then we we did parks on Saturday. When we were back in town Sunday I suggested we swing back through Palisade(our Airbnb was in Grand Junction) and see if there was another bottle of wine we might like. After 1 other spot we swung by Hermosa Vineyards. It was a humbler operation than some we noted, as we pulled in. I sorta like that over a grandiose entrance. The tasting room was even more humble in size and layout. As we walked in a larger group was just leaving and bought a few wines, so I figured it must be pretty good. It was good overall. The vintner was also our bartender he said. He told us alot about the history of him and the place. We learned alot about the produce he had growing as well. We were the only customers at that moment so he was especially chatty with us. It was a nice stop, we didn't get a bottle here, but we did appreciate the vibe. read more

One of my wine loving friends recommended this place upon telling her about my upcoming Palisade wine getaway trip several weeks ago. As my expectation for this small but reputable winery grew as the day of the trip was near, today, I have the pleasure of writing this 5-star review to add to others' raves after I had a wonderful time spending 30 minutes at this one of a kind winery a few days ago. Kenneth was the most experienced/knowledgeable wine makers out of all 11 places I got to visit in Palisade mid this week. He certainly knows what wine making is all about and I could taste the precision he puts into each varietal. No wonder his place is ranked one of the top Colorado wineries. Hermosa is small and quaint but big doesn't always describe the success of a/any business. I certainly see that his pride as a wine maker is reflected in the kind of winery he runs: no extravagance, no big/expensive sign. Some great business is not always on the main/busy street; hence the expression, "hidden gem". Ken's winery is a hidden gem of Colorado's wine country is an understatement. His wines are not cheap like other wineries' wines so expect pay $5 to $10 more. But once you have tasted the qualities of his wines after a flight, you WILL be convinced to buy a bottle or two. read more

We stopped by this Vineyard on the recommendation of a friend. The wine maker did our tasting. There were three of us in the group and two of us were sharing a tasting because we couldn't drink that much and drive - the wine maker was incredible rude and hit the tip bin hard to let us know that wasn't acceptable there. OK - so I went to sit in the car and wait. I haven't had many Colorado wines worth verbal abuse. My sister and husband stayed. He continued to be rude and condescending and was really only interacting with my husband and dismissing my sister. My sister is a sommelier who owns a great wine bar in Denver. Big mistake on his part. We will share our experience far and wide. He brags about being the longest running wine maker in the area, yet his winery isn't that successful and none of his wines are that memorable. Some of the other wineries have figured out, it's about the experience just as much as it's about the wine. And his wine doesn't merit that toxic environment, and newsflash- women can be smart about wine too. read more

The wines are really good but the selection is limited to only 5 tastings (maybe because it's the off season?). Ken was very pleasant and friendly. His passion for wine shows and I learned a few things about the process. His tasting room is in a small garage, but it is nicely decorated and felt cozy with a wood burning stove going! Expect to pay top dollar for the tasting ($20) and the wines ($40/bottle) which is why I rate this with 4 stars. If the prices were more comparable with other Palisade wineries ($10-$15/tastings, $20-$35/bottle), it would be a game changer for me to regularly return. read more

Kenn is the best! We love his banter and his sense of humor, and he dishes it perfectly (and is a good sport when anyone manages to land a zinger, which isn't often for us!) Don't visit if you take yourself too seriously and/or aren't willing to spend money on good wine. We first visited Spring of 2017 and always make it a point to stop at Hermosa for our annual Paladise trip. Obviously we also come for the excellent wine, but Kenn always shows us a good time. Finally took home a glass to SLC to remember the good times. Perhaps if we are lucky, merlot will come back. Stop in while this great winery exists. read more

He was very nice and full of wonderful stories. We shared our times of struggles and joys all while he told us about his wines and all the things that go into the production. We had a very good experience. We arrived about 3pm just as another couple was leaving. We were there about an hour, just the two of us and Mr. Ken. The wines were good and we settled on the Syrah as our favorite along with the Cherry Dessert. We had great conversation and learned a bit. He referred us to Blue Beryl vineyard which was a great tip. It was a nice stop (if you're driving up from the south) before hitting Palisade. I did research for a girls winery trip and this was one of the top recommended wineries! I read that it was tricky to find this place since it's just on a dirt path and our uber ended up turning down the wrong street. We eventually found it and went in. When we got there, there were maybe 3 other groups there already. We just found a table for all of us and sat down. The owner came around all the tables to give people samples. It didn't seem like he was super friendly or wanted to engage in conversation. There were pretzel and pita chips for each table and we ate those up. We tried several wines but we weren't very fond of them. When we left, we were each charged a $5 fee (which we were aware of from prior research). I'm not against paying a tasting fee, but when the service isn't great and the product isn't great, it's not worth it. If I was to go back to the Palisades, I would skip this winery. read more

Good wines and very friendly atmosphere. We met the owner and another person and they were both very nice, and made the tasting experience a very good one. The wine tasting is with a fee, but they waive it if you buy any wine and you get to taste a good number of wines. I personally think wine tasting should be free, I hope the sales generated from tasting can cover the tasting costs and still make a nice profit but I see that many wineries are charging for tasting now which kind of adds a considerable cost if you are on an extensive tour and visiting quite a few wineries. So keep on the good work at Hermosa. We got the Gewürztraminer and had it ice cold with friends on a warm summer evening just a couple of days ago and it was awesome! read more

For background, my wife and I have done wine tasting and touring throughout the US from the big guys (Napa, Sonoma, etc. to smaller regions like Virginia and Arizona). I decided to post a review on this place since we enjoyed it so much. This is a great little estate winery that is producing some amazing wine (especially red) and you need to know what you are getting into. Kenneth, the owner and wine maker, who appears to do the majority of tastings is definitely a quirky guy. That being said, I think he's truly authentic and wants to serve his wine to people who really appreciate wine, not folks out on a 12 stop wine tour trying to get as drunk as humanly possible. Yes, his bottle prices may be a bit high for the region, but if you took a lot of this wine and put it in somewhere like Napa, you could probably sell it for double what he is to be honest. Go here if you enjoy good wine, don't mind the $10 tasting fee (which is reasonable given the 11 pours we got) and want to take home some damn good bottles to enjoy with friends or over a delicious meal. Don't go if you are looking for a party; that's not what this place is about by any means. Definitely a gem; just need to know what you are getting into! read more

Was debating to go to Hermosa or check out other wineries in Palisade since the reviews are a bit polarized. But we ended up having a good time here. Ken the owner will be pouring your drinks, I asked about me and my husband sharing a tasting since he's driving but that's not an option which is fine. I can see what other people are complaining about the customer service part, I mean he's not the most talkative person and not the greatest in hospitality but hey we all got different personalities (I'm not a huge people person either so I understand) bottomline it's not a server pouring wine it's the owner himself. If you ask questions he would answer with details. It's more awkwardness than rudeness IMO haha so if you aren't expecting over the top restaurant server engagement you will have a good time here. read more

What a great winery in Palisade! It looks small as you drive up but I promise it's worth a visit. We were the only ones there during our Monday visit which allowed us to have a great chat with the owner/winemaker. His wines are among the more sophisticated among the palisade offerings. My favorite was the chenin blanc! The owner actually told us he was just recognized by travel and leisure as the top winery in the US outside of california and was #11 overall. Pretty awesome when you consider that it's a relatively small operation without any of the snootiness that can come with fancy wineries. Hermosa is off the beaten path in Palisades, and it's the best wine in Colorado! If you're a red wine fan, The Cabernet Franc is fantastic, we always buy a bottle when we visit. But honestly, all the reds are good here. The tasting room is in a barn which has a beautiful backyard, best time to visit is when the sun is setting so you can appreciate one of the best views in Palisade. Felt extremely unwelcome! Was with a group of friends and had been to a couple other wineries already. I had reached my limit and needed to stop drinking but the rest of the group wanted to drink a little more, so I asked for water. The guy at the bar was almost angry! Not only did I feel like he would have preferred I wait out in the car, but he charged me $5 for a small bottle of Sams Club water... There was one wine my husband liked, but after how we were treated, we had no interest in spending any further time or money there. I went here to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends and Kenneth (owner) made myself and my friends feel very uncomfortable. We were talked down to and were "scoffed" at multiple time. We were wine tasting all day so we brought someone to drive and he was very rude to them about not tasting. I didn't love any of the wine after the tasting but I decided I wasn't going to buy any bottles long before that due to the service. Will not stop at this winery again. Very few offerings and what they do have was just so-so except the choc cherry dessert wine. Ken, the owner, seemed like he could care less if we were there or not. He basically rushed us through ... we were probably done in 20 mins. Five pourings for $20 was on the high end compared to other vineyards, ESPECIALLY since they were VERY small pours... less than an ounce I'd say. There is NO ambiance at the winery, just a very small tasting room and the grounds are basically a gravel lot. Don't waste your time! We chose this winery based on the reviews. Quite honestly, we were not impressed. On the positive side, the host was very friendly and the wine tasting was free. From there, I felt like we drove up to someone's garage. We tried about eight or so wines, both white and red. My husband and I thought the wines lacked complexity although they'd been aged (some of them) in excess of five years in barrels. I think the most alarming part was that the wines were extremely overpriced at $30-$40. My husband and I go to wineries all over the U.S. when we travel and usually buy at least one bottle of wine. We, honestly, did not find any of the wines to be good and left without purchasing a bottle. There was another winery that we went to after this winery that had very good wines priced from $14-$16 with a very nice shaded outdoor seating area. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for, literally, years. My experience was THAT GOOD that years later it still irks me that I let life get in the way and didn't get to write this review. The owner (whose name escapes me) gave us the experience of the lifetime. My mother and I arrived late, he had already closed up the main tasting area. Instead of sending us away, he invited us to have a drink with him on his back porch. We sat and chatted for hours, admiring his beautiful vineyard, and on our way out he told us we could even take some of the delicious cherries he had growing on the property. All of this on top of the wine. I'm not even a white wine person, let alone a lover of Riesling, but this Riesling was out of this world. The perfect summer beverage. It's so good, that years later, when I've finally run out, I find myself contemplating another trip out to Palisade just to visit this vineyard. read more

With no shortage of vineyards and wineries in the area, I have to love a place on an epic level to go more than once during our excursions to Palisade. Hermosa is one of those wineries. I could easily come here every day (Not just on vacation, literally every day). There is a reason Ken has been so successful and award winning. I'll get to the wine in a minute because let's be honest that the ambience is just as important as the quality of the product. The drive there is beautiful and don't worry, it's easy to find. :) This is the only winery in the area that makes a refurbished barn look like a modern and welcoming dining establishment (minus the food). When you approach, The beautiful barn doors open for you and imagine doves flying out and a halo around the wine. It's that good. Also, unlike other wineries, he provides not only stools, but actual tables! AND comes to the table so it's great for couples and groups. This is a fantastic change from so many places that you're cramped in and standing for an hour drinking wines that aren't even that great. It's well lit but as cool as can be considering the barn door opening and hot summer weather. Look, the place is perfect. That's that. Onto the good stuff! As mentioned, Ken is the proprietor of Hermosa and 100% knows his stuff. He knows it without glancing down at a cheat sheet or typed sales pitch. He knows his wines and acts like it. That is a compliment from me! I get sick of the scripts from staff that sound like they really have no clue. Not Ken! He speaks about his wine like he has sung lullabies to every grape. Does he go super into detail? No. Could he go a bit more into each wine, sure. However, there is something to be said for not having a long shpeal for every sip. I learn what I need to know and things I didn't before. Hey, if you want to know more, just ask! His hospitable and funny demeanor always shines when describing the wines. Lol! Maybe I've been to enough wineries that I don't need as much detail, but I could see someone unfamiliar likes a bit more. None the less, Hermosa is so relaxing, so quirky in the best of ways, and such a beautiful location that it's impossible not to love. Including the wine!!!!!! He has mostly dry wines but plenty of semi-Sweet and a breathtaking cherry port/dessert that will knock your socks off! There is enough choice to please any palate and well worth the price. Yes, it's a bit on the pricier side compared to some. Approx $40 per bottle. But before you get bottle shock (ha.ha.) think of it this way, would you rather spend $17 or even $20 on a bottle that you like a little and think it would be good, OR do you want to pay more for a bottle that aged well (I've stashed enough to know) and enjoy the best wine in the valley for a bit more moolah? That's a personal choice, but for me, hands down Hermosa bottle for $40 is worth every penny more than an ok wine for $20. We've gone here year after year and it only gets better with every barrel. read more

What is going on here...? How is this ranked first? The wine here is TERRIBLE. I don't mean sub par, I mean undrinkable. I had to pour out every glass. It's overly crowded. The people pouring told us NOTHING about the wine. They didn't even tell us what they were pouring let alone about the wine. I find that unprofessional and down right rude. The wine is over priced for bottles. The tasting fee is $5 for 12 which is the best that can be said for the place. Hands down the best winery we visited while in Palisade. We drove in from Estes Park (where we live), never having been to the Palisade before. Suzanna spent a lot of time on the internet planning out the different wineries that we would visit. What a treat to meet Ken. This is definitely not a "big box" winery. It's small, inviting and intimate. Just the way we like it. We made friends with Ken instantly and even came back later in the day just to hang out. It's hard to pick a favorite wine as they are all so good. The Syrah was probably our favorite. We've spent a lot of time in Wine country both in Virginia and California. Hermosa Vineyards exceeded our expectations of Colorado western slope wines. Thank you Ken and we'll definitely be back! read more

First winery on our first tour around the wineries of the Palisades area. Tasting room was nice but i felt when the owner realized we weren't experienced wine drinkers and didn't know a lot he pretty much wrote us off. He would pour the wine and announce the name of the wine and that was it. No explanation or description at all then continued his conversation with the other couple that was there. Felt like we were being looked down upon and discounted because we were new to wine and he just wasn't interested in guiding us through the wines. Our funnest winery with exceptional wine and a great host. My sister-in-law wanted cherries and everywhere we stopped they had either sold out or had bad spots on them. So as we were driving into the winery she asked my husband to pick her a few. He picked 3 cherries and she ate them. The tasting room here is outdoors and Ken encourages you to taste all of his wines. They are great. So while we are happily tasting Ken is giving us a history of the winery and wines. We are all having a great time. Then he comments on how they just sprayed the cherries and it takes a couple of weeks before you won't get sick. The look on my sister-in-law's face was priceless and I had to hold back the tears. Of course he was just kidding. He said if you purchase $200 of wine it would cure it. She still wasn't sure he was kidding. Thanks Ken for a great laugh! Sorry about stealing the 3 cherries but we did purchase wine. :) The Syrah was exceptional and our group favorite. Hermosa Vineyards...where do we begin!? The environment was so relaxed and inviting. The owner, Kenn, is no stranger to the wine craft. He was taught how to make wine as a child by Italians. I asked an endless amount of questions and Kenn patiently answered them in ways that a non-winemaker could understand. He grows 17 different varietals and the whole process is done on site: picking the grapes, crushing the grapes, the fermentation(s), bottling, and labeling. In fact, Kenn engineered a machine that conveys the empty bottles, inserts argon, fills the bottle with wine, corks the bottle, seals it and then labels it. It packages up to 12 bottles/min and Kenn designed it himself! My attention was captured by the Chardonnay, because I'm picky with my Chardonnay, but Hermosa Vineyard's oak fermented Chardonnay was just right. Each of the wines we tried were so unique and we especially loved the Cherry Dessert Wine (even bought a bottle). His staff were exceptional as well! The two ladies working were engaged with all of their guests and their knowledge of wine was apparent. However we were most impressed by his willingness to show us around his vineyard, allow a barrel tasting, and show us how the grapes are crushed. He also allowed us to try wines that weren't on the tasting menu. It was my first time trying Viognier, and the nose was spectacular, lots of floral notes. If you come to Hermosa, come to enjoy yourself. Kenn is like an old friend - he will mess with you, tell you stories, joke around...he's a good dude with a supreme skill at his craft. Just relax, come to have fun, and you'll have an experience like none other...and you might even learn something. Appreciate what he creates...which are terrific wines with character and taste.
