Nice place. Decor was mostly local artwork with QR codes to purchase. Comfortable seating. Service was excellent; keeping our drinks filled but giving us time to eat. The service was good, but that was about it. The food was subpar- soggy potatoes, just bad taste to the quiche crust- and the prices were way too high to match the taste. I had never heard of Colophon, but discovered it on a Google search, looking for good places for lunch in B'ham. It came up in a top few list. A friend and colleague was coming to meet me from Seattle, and I wanted to find something fun and new. Score! We both were completely delighted that they offered a trio of soups--what a cool idea. I had the clam chowder (an unusual consistency, but very good), the Greek vegetable daily special (also a very unusual consistency--very blended and flavorful with feta as part of the mix) and the awesome African peanut soup which I could eat all day. The garden salad was very fresh and nice. Lots of sprouts and a variety of greens, nice croutons. I loved the raspberry lemonade. The place itself is lovely and charming. At first, we couldn't find it, staring at her phone and the address over the door of an olive oil establishment. But nice Olive Oil guy asked us, "Looking for Colophon?" and then shepherded us downstairs, which I am guessing is the greater part of his day. This place needs to work on showing where their entrance is for people who don't live here. I walked around for 15 minutes before I figured out it is in the alley, and that there is another one in Village Bookstore. That said, I really enjoyed the food. Cafe done RIGHT! I would love to return and try some of the other delights on the menu! I don't normally go for the cafe style place of restaurant, however, this place is really on point! The service was great for a busy Friday during the Christmas holiday week! Attentive and timely! They had plenty of drink options, which was SO nice! I ended up getting a mimosa (which was executed nicely, good ratios and served in a stemless wine glass) and my husband and father in law got a local brew. EXCELLENT food options! Not the usual, bland cafe options. My father in law got the special mac n' cheese of the day, which snagging a bite proved it was super good! My husband had the salmon melt, which was good but not great. My sister in law and also my mother in law got the soup trio, which they both enjoyed. Peanut soup wasn't the favorite due to it's unexpected flavor and bit of spice, wasn't bad though. If you really like peanut sauce you'd love it. I got the veggie sandwich on sour dough with a small cup of clam chowder. I was very happy with it! Super good!!! The clam chowder was a bit more on the watery side, could have been a bit thicker, but veryyyy good! Veggie sandwich was nice and robust! Being right next to the quaint bookstore and beneath the wonderful olive oil and gift shop is a wondddderful location! The Colophon Cafe has been a Bellingham institution for years - decades, actually. So often places like this become moribund, shadows of themselves, and finally fade to black (Cliffhouse, we miss your deck on sunny summer days!). Fortunately for all of us, this is not the case here. After walking the hills of Fairhaven, down to Boulevard Park, and from there the trestle and trail to Fairhaven proper, we decided to treat ourselves to lunch. It had been awhile since we've been to The Colophon, so we decided to check it out. So glad we did! I had the Chicken Brie sandwich, with Cinnamon Apples, melted Brie, Fig Spread, Aioli, and fresh Basil on toasted Ciabatta. Our server recommended adding a bit of red onion to slightly cut the sweetness of the fig; great suggestion! The flavors all played well together, what an interesting, fun and unique sandwich! My wife had the Alaska Salmon Burger with wild-caught Alaska Salmon (friends don't let friends eat farmed salmon!), Basil Pesto, Roasted Red Pepper and more. This was a real treat, every bite delicious. We paired our meals with a nice little glass of wine, and then - well, they've always had fabulous Peanut butter Pie, so we got a slice to go. This is a ridiculous cozy little place to hang out and relax. When you first enter the storefront from the street, you enter an olive oil shop but make your way down the stairs and alas a cute cafe. We sat near the fireplace on comfy leather couches where we enjoyed our grande hot apple cider and latte. Super quiet and relaxing. There is jazz music playing and magazines available while your hanging out. The drinks were delicious and I recommend the hot cider. It has a nice local feel to it, with colorful dishes to a lounge area with a fire pit and some couches. And the food is pretty good. Nothing amazing, just simple classic American. I also shared the hummus plate with a friend, and our waiter told us to add balsamic vinegar to it, and that was a combo I'll never forget. Our waiter was super attentive and kind as well. Great food and stellar service! Outdoor dining is great, there is a little park right outside. I was really impressed with all the vegetarian options. They even have a veggie pot pie on the menu. Comfort food at its best! We came in a little early today so it was still a it cold outside. No problem, they turned on the heaters for us and gave us blankets. Wow! Food is solid. The potato wedges were really good - and I am usually just about a crispy French fry, but these were great. The only bummer was the Caesar salad. Although Colophon is less than a mile from my house, I haven't been there for a while. I met there today with a friend for lunch and renewed my relationship with this old standby dining spot in the center of Fairhaven Village. My first choice (salmon burger) was not available, but my Bleu Cheese Burger was delish. My companion ordered a Bacon Cheddar Burger. Both were prepared to order and accompanied by a side dish. We both chose the garlic wedge potatoes over soup or salad. I'm not certain whether the potatoes were pan-fried or prepared in an oven, but they were delicious -- hot, crispy enough and without a hint of oil. As expected our coffees were freshly brewed from quality fresh roast beans and our cups refilled without interruption long before they were half-consumed. Likewise our meals were served promptly -- hot with a pickle spear and dressed with lettuce, onion, tomato and sprouts. Our servers were friendly, careful not to needlessly interrupt our discussion and observant of our every need. Although we camped at our table for nearly an hour-and-a-half, we never felt rushed in any way. All-in-all, Colophon provided a perfect venue for our quiet, midweek, leisure lunch. read more

I had half turkey avocado sandwich and a bowl of the Africa Peanut soup. I had never tried it before, and the server was so kind to bring out a small sample to let me taste it before ordering. Ordered an americano and the 'bagelry' bagel with smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers. Coffee was great. Bagel was Uber disappointing as you could tell just by looking at it. It was a bagel from a bag from a grocery store. A bread bagel. For 15$. Don't advertise on your menu that it's a homemade bagel from a proper bagel shop when it isn't. My family and I visited Fairhaven area for the first time because a friend lives in this area. I read all the reviews and wanted to go to Magdalena's Creperie but friend said it was a smaller area and recommended here instead. We came in on 11th street next to the bookstore and had a hard time finding it because there was a store that we had to go through and the restaurant was in the basement. The entrance of the restaurant is on the Fairhaven square. Restaurant was spacious and comfortable with an area that had couches and a fireplace. We had the three soup sampler (clam chowder, African peanut soup and Mexican corn and bean sopa soup) with the French baguette and the turkey avocado sandwich on a marble sandwich. The soups were tasty and flavorful. We ordered an extra side of French baguette because the toddler loves his simple carbs. Clam chowder was tasty, African peanut soup was good and not overly flavorful and the Mexican corn and bean had the right amount of spice. The husband got a vanilla latte that came with the pretty design. The turkey avocado sandwich was delicious. Service was fast and friendly. I saw the ladies with cheese board next to me that look delicious and there was a special Valentine menu since the day before was Valentine. Would recommend and come back to try the desserts. read more

It wasn't crowded at all but did taste good. We were seated in a booth and the seats were totally bagged out: it felt like the table was way too close to my chin. Montana, our waitress, never came to check on us. She walked past the table and looked at us and nodded and decided we were doing okay even though she never asked. I had the chicken pot pie and it was terrible. It had a strange taste and I could not eat it. It was like a chicken soup and on top with some kind of paperweight Bagel like thing that was impossible to cut into. My honey had the clam chowder and he said the taste was okay. But the potatoes were not cooked. We asked for the manager, but the manager had left a few hours ago. And we were there at dinner time. The soups were very tasty, though they could have been served a little warmer. I wish both the curry and peanut soup had more flavor, adding salt and pepper helped. My favorite, on its own, was the split pea. My friend enjoyed her quiche, although we both agreed it was pretty ordinary. The croutons on the salad were seasoned tastefully and had a nice crunchy bite. Overall I felt that it was a fine choice to dine on a sunny Washington day but not someplace I'd frequent often given its average quality compared to its price. read more

Biggest problem I had was the time. A 30 minute wait. It was noon and not really crowded when we arrived. The wait was too long just for a few half-sandwiches.
