I have lived in the area for nearly 40 years. As a teenager, I worked at both the Wicker Basket in town, and Hickory Farm Market in Chester, under the old owners, Pat and Dave Maas. Pat and Dave ran a very solid deli and prepared food business, the subsequent owners, not so much. The Colonial Pantry is my personal choice for the best deli sandwiches in the area, and many people I know agree. It is an institution with greater authenticity than the Old Black Horse next door. The father and son team have been there since forever, and the old man knows his stuff. They are 100% consistent, do not cut stupid corners, but like all great cooks, probably don't let anything go to waste, which is a compliment. Price be damned, it is well worth it. It is a touchstone to many that grew up in the area, and it would tragic should they ever decide to do anything other than keep doing what they are doing. read more

I've been going to Colonial Pantry since I went to grade school across the street - MANY years ago and by far the best gem in Mendham. The father and son team are so passionate about their quality of food - they don't advertise but after a few conversations - I discovered how deeply they source non GMO, organic when possible, fresh, local, ethical ingredients as if it was the old country before we started poor and big packaged bags of frozen food as ingredients practices. I told them they should advertise that but they are old school and it's simply how they roll. Best sloppy joes in town!! I also love supporting them - they really care and are so thoughtful which trickles down to how they serve their community by food and choices. I wish there were more people like them in the world. read more
