I would give this place ZERO stars if yelp had the option. Pulled into this shopping strip to turn around and spotted this place. I figured since I'm here why not check it out. We walked in and were not greeted although the lady behind the counter made eye contact with us. The service was so rude and unfriendly that we will never go back. This little family business is almost like a part of our family. This little cafe has been with us as we passed the years, in good times and bad times. My opinion - this cafe is one of best kept secrets of Houston and the prices are very good. Something I learned when I lived in Asia, is eat where the locals eat. West Houston has a large Colombian & Venezuelan expat community, and this cafe is always packed on Saturday/Sunday mornings. So trust the people who know where the good food is at. Remember, this is a family business and a home style bakery. Some of the negative comments about customer service I think is due to only having a couple people and trying to keep the kitchen running at the same time. They are busy people and hard workers, not salesman. They make good bread and empanadas, not chew your ear off with small talk. It is a family business, and we are really glad they are there. If places like this go away, all we have left is McDonalds and the chain stores. I will take the imperfections to keep some culture with us. read more

These people are not from America, but the food translates well. Big fan of Columbian cooking, and they have a little of every region. The soup was good, and the empanada's can stand on it's own as the meal or appetizer. I hate to say best as I dont know what best is when it comes to empanada's. But I will definetly be coming back for more. read more

Oh heck yes. Might be best pollo empanadas I've tasted. Beef also good, & the beef with egg. Chirozo sausage awesome. Blood sausage fabulous. Better bone up on some basic Spanish to order if you don't have a bilingual friend along, & earlier you get here the better. They start running out of certain items in afternoon. Empanadas - who doesn't love them? I've been to loads and loads of empanada places and this place ALWAYS wins. Their empanadas run from 50 cents to $1ish, depending on what the filling is. I adore their 'dedo que queso' (a cheese filled pastry in a long shape). It's a dollar and worth every penny. The service is fast and friendly and the empanadas are wonderful! I hope this place stays open forever. read more

Empanadas Botanas are my fave w/ meat, potatoes and rice. I've tried the "Pastel" de carne and Colombian empanadas too, all are good but no ideas what's in those. Previous 2014 empanada reviews say they used to be $1.75 each but now they cost about $2.25 so when I take some to go, throw in a large Maracuya, seriously the BEST fruit drink in existence, few bakery selections & I spend close to $30. Honestly I was intimidated going in here the first time & I think they'd sell me more bread if it was self serve or i didn't feel like I'm going to slow picking it out for them sometimes, but the great selections make it 5 stars! Seriously prepare to hide these in the back of the fridge. When I work in the area I go every time, it's embarrassing. read more

My mother and I drove over an hour to try the famous Colombian empanadas at this place because a friend recommended them. The place was okay, the service was very bad. I asked the guy that was helping us if he was the owner or just an employee, he said his parents were the owners and he was working for them while they were on vacation. I let him know he was rude; my mother and I are not Colombian and so we asked what the items were and he seemed annoyed. I was really unimpressed with the service. I requested a cup of coffee, and they told me that they would not brew it as i was the only person that ordered coffee. That if I wanted, they would make me instant coffee, however I would be charged the same price as a regular coffee. Not sure what the issue is with the coffee. I mean it's like they literally just deep fried leftovers! In addition to that I also had a plate of assorted meats, even single thing had been fried. Why would you fry a small rib of meat??? If you want authentic Colombian food this is not the place to go. They have the worst customer service and not the mention the food quality is poor. Last time I ordered a morcilla (blood sausage) it had a a funky smell and an off color. I didn't care to try it, I cut into it and the smell turned me off so I decided to return it. Long story short, the owner refused to take it off my bill. Fifteen minutes later she took it off my bill and bluntly told me how the "customer is not always right." And how the real problem was that I've never had Colombian food before. I am Colombian and I know what Colombian food should taste like. read more

Food was definitely tasty so as far as food it deserves more stars but in regards to customer service it was sorely disappointing. The door states that closing time is 7:30pm, we went in at 6:34pm, found that all the chairs were upside down on top of the tables, like they just cleaned the floors. So that meant that they were no longer allowing customers to sit at the tables. The attendant confirmed that by saying that at that time of the day they were only doing pick-up orders. Really? But you close at 7:30pm? Ok, we placed our to-go order and proceeded to wait while standing so as to not disturb their chairs and tables and we were not offered to take a seat either while we waited. Ok, fine. How about a coffee while we wait, the sign in the windows said cappuccino and espresso...well no, at that time they were no longer serving coffee because they had already cleaned the machine. Wow! A whole hour before closing! So no coffee. Oh and we were informed that it's that on Saturdays they close at 7pm not 7:30pm as stated on the door. Well that still doesn't explain why even if they close at 7pm, at 6:34pm when we came in, we didn't have the option to sit or to have coffee. Again, the food deserves more stars, no doubt. Yet the service deserves less, so I went with middle of the road and assigned three stars. We will not be returning since the experience wasn't all that good. Sad because the food is good but we'll look for a place that offers both good food and service. read more

I am not Colombian, so I don't know what authentic is, but the pastry was light and fluffy and the filling (I got chicken), was pretty good. It was dry, but apparently, my friend forgot to give me the sauce that came with it. She really liked her beef empanadas. Definitely give it a try! read more
