Our family came in for lunch. We ordered two hamburgers for the kids, beef empanadas, tequeños, a sweet patacon beef sandwich, and a pepito. The food came out fast, the empanadas and tequeños were really good. The kids hamburgers were dry and the meat patties were thin and didn't taste fresh. They change the filling of the empanadas. Now it is just a gooey mix whether it's beef or chicken and they both taste alike. Just a mixed meat in a blender with some starch dough inside the crispy shell. No meat taste just a starchy dough mix of a filling. I think they are attempting to use machines to make the empanadas, but in the process the taste went to zero. The corn shell is still crispy, but the filling is horrible. Moving away from Venezuela when I was 14 years old hasn't been easy, and what I miss most is our food and the authentic flavors I grew up with. Maxi arepa is a really special place for me because it was one of the first Venezuelan restaurants in Katy. It reminds me that I still have a piece of Venezuela close to me, even though I am super far away. But every time I visit them, it feels like home. The first time my family and I visited Maxi Arepa was amazing, thanks to the smells of arepas and everyone gathering to celebrate, reminiscent of a well-known restaurant from Venezuela. I got very emotional because that was one of my grandma's favorite restaurants back there. I remember she would always take us on the weekends and enjoy good food with the best company. The owners and employees always greet their customers with a smile and the best attitude, which I believe makes a huge difference in our culture. Their food is always delicious, and I don't think you will find a better arepa or patacon anywhere else. My favorite plate from the menu is the patacon maduro with grilled chicken- it's a ripe plantain with chicken, Pico de Gallo, and cheese. It just tastes exactly like it was made in Venezuela. Also, their tequenos and parrillas are very good and perfect for sharing, as they bring a lot of food, which, if you don't eat much, is perfect for 2 people. What I really love about going to these Venezuelan restaurants is that it connects all cultures together. Every time I go, I can see many different cultures --Americans, Colombians, etc. --and I love it when people who don't know our food ask for recommendations and are willing to learn about our country and culture. It shows to me that food or the sense of belonging can bring individuals together and make them feel proud of where they come from. I know this small business is valuable to Venezuelans in Katy and Houston because we know it came from a lot of hard work and passion to bring a little piece of our Venezuela here, and their dedication shows. I would really love for other people to support them by not just buying a meal, but to help a family's dreams keep alive and open to taste something good and different. If you have never tried Venezuelan food, I highly recommend this restaurant. They are always going to welcome you with open arms and the best energy, and that is why, when I feel a little sad or start missing my country, I stop by since his place feels familiar. I enjoyed my Parrilla Mixta with Carne and Pernil. It was large and served with an abundance of fries. The nice lady at the counter was friendly and helpful. I prefer table service and this I has counter ordering. They were out of tea, so I had to have soda. My dad me complaint is they charge the same for tap water as fountain drinks. read more

Driving around looking for some good food for dinner I found this place next to the gas station, they do a lot of Togo orders from what I see while I was there. Good food great service but they don't have everything that they offer in the menu, most of the items were out or not available at this place, according to the server she said that they never had those items available at this location but they are on the menu:) weird but yeah that's what she said. My arepas were amazing and the few more items that I ordered were the bomb, the sauces super delicious. I can wait to go back and see if they have more items on the menu to try. I started exploring Venezuelan cuisine about 2 years ago and fell in love with tequenos and arepas! This place had the best tequenos that I have ever had. Unfortunately, I did not much care for the arepa that I ordered. If you want some good arepas in Katy, one of the largest suburbs in the world with over 300,000 residents, there are not many options, but this one is a good option. It's great that there's finally good Venezuelan food in Katy, because Houston itself has a few good options. We find them to be tasty and delicious and well worth the trip. They're not the cheapest but they are delicious enough to make me say that you should come here and give it a try, five stars. Some of the other reviews might be questionable or fake but I would give it five stars for the taste every time. I've been to this restaurant on multiple occasions. Sadly, on Friday night 4/21/2023 I ordered the Patacones Carne with sweet plantains and got food poisoning. I had severe adnominal pain with vomiting and diarrhea. I ended up in the hospital at 1 AM with continued pain and was released at 6 AM. I am beyond disappointed that this establishment was not properly handling their food. I have submitted this issue to the health department and I hope this does not happen to anyone else. read more

Overall the food was good. The only thing I would suggest they improve from everything we tried is their empanadas. The dough was sooo thin that it was super crunchy and it felt more like we were eating a cracker. The place is small so it gets crowded easily but we still were able to find a table. They have a person that goes around the tables, I don't know if it's a manager or owner or just a bouncer but he was nice and asked customer how was the food, although it also felt like he might be checking people to see if they were almost done with their tables. I think their serving staff needs to be more attentive. They just go drop your food at the table and leave. We had to wait a while to get our drinks because the lady that brought our food wouldn't even ask us if we got everything or we were missing something. I get that they are not waiters but that doesn't mean that they can't be attentive. Because of this same issue, we had to wait a good 20 minutes to get our to-go boxes and at the end despite having asked one of the servers to get it, we had to get up ourselves and ask somebody else to give us the boxes. All while we were seeing the server just talking to another server in the kitchen. In conclusion, it is a good place if you want to try Venezuelan food. The wraps and the pepito were delicious, same with the patacones. I do think they can improve in the service and in the long run they'll benefit from it since tables will clear quicker and they'll be able to serve more customers. read more

Not digging the arepas bc they are not like the smaller ones I am used to but my goodness this Chicha needs to be taken off the menu, taken off the planet. Whoever invented that drink was in a desperate situation. That's a smoothie you make when you are a kid home alone and only have 3 ingredients in the house. We went in to get cepillados. She takes our order, we pay, and she says she'll get to making them in a sec. So we wait. She serves at least 3 parties (of multiple people each) before my husband went up there to ask about our order. She stares at him with a blank face and then is finally like "oh I forgot". She then proceeds to still serve one more party, while we're standing there. And then she makes our cepillados, and hands them to us, no apology, nothing. She didn't say anything. I'm not usually one to scream "racism" right away, but considering we were the only non-Latin Americans in there, and we were the only ones not being served... I mean, that speaks for itself. Ok I have to give them a review I was not impressed with the food at all I have eaten Colombian arepas for years and this was just not to my liking. I think even the masa from the gorditas taste better . This was was to dry the meats where cold as if the where cooked the day before and if they are its ok if set in a warming tray I would understand but heat the meat before you sever it . But over all it did not give me that feeling to go back again and try another arepa . The cheese kolaches rolls where ok but the combination of salt in the breading and salt from the cheese just didn't mix well too salty. read more
