And somehow I took great delight in being treated like a criminal at De Beers because I knew that I could vent on Yelp and warn all you people away from this awful store. I love nice things. Mostly to look, but we also love to splurge. My husband works right across from De Beers and when it opened last week he was really, really excited to see some of their unique and beautiful pieces. We've been hunting for a pretty earth tone diamond for me and De Beers (being THE diamond experience) claimed that they could get it in for us. So I finally make my stop in the store yesterday. It is Friday, I'm about to go to dinner, so I'm just wearing jeans and a nice top. You'd think I was flashing a gun around and about to break the glass and steal everything. They looked at me like I was a criminal. I felt compelled to keep my hands where they could see them so that the 90 lbs. security guard wouldn't try to tackle me to the ground. There were 4 salespeople (one woman) and the scrawny security guard. All of them avoided eye contact, two of them left the room when I got there and the other two were trust to guard me in case I wanted to hold them up I suppose. They continued on with their nice little conversation and looked me up and down as if wondering what I was doing there. I saw a few things that I fell in love with (including a necklace that my husband was planning to buy as a late anniversary gift), but their attitudes kept me from even asking to have them pull it out. I left in a huff. This is not Dallas. We're not overly pretentious. I've been at the Galleria enough to know that the people wearing sweat pants and a baseball cap are usually the ridiculously rich ones. The workers at De Beers have not learned this yet. One of the highest profile customers at my husband's store is a lady from College Station. She comes into the store in neon shorts and a fanny pack whenever she's in town and drops $10-40K every time. She was there the first day that De Beers opened and bought a $15,000 ring. She was back in town the next week for their "Grand Opening" and they pretty much didn't let her in the door. Big mistake. I'm assuming she'll never shop with them again. My goal now is to pull a Pretty Woman and take my mother in there. My parents decided to become filthy rich after I moved out of the house (isn't that how it always is?!) and they love to spoil my mother. A lot. As in many carats worth of spoiling. She currently wants to upgrade her ring another 2 carats (plus all the diamonds around the band itself), and needless to say that it would add up to a hefty commission. That being said, I'm now planning to take my mother in there in all her sparkling glory and have her pull out all sorts of rings (while I was in there, I didn't see one center stone as big as her current one) and then leave by reminding them that bad service to a seemingly unimportant client can ruin a bigger sale in the future. AFTER paying them the money for it, they "forgot" to reserve my room and gave it to someone else for one of the days. Still, i decided to continue along with the other day I rented. This was a fatal mistake. The morning of, my students and i arrived, and there was no one there. I began to receive excuse after excuse (some of which were legitimate, to be honest, but some were not) about why no one could come open up the room for me when I had paid them MONTHS in advance to set this up. Ultimately, we cancelled the whole thing. But not until after children were left outside without parents or any way to get in. Upon complaining, the manager Billy literally began to block my phone number as I demanded compensation. I attempted to contact the owner repeatedly, but was also ignored. Truly a disgusting business.
