This company was hired to replace all 5 Air Conditioning units in one complex here in Denton in May 2023. Not one month has gone by without a stop in service due to incompetence on behalf of this company. I am writing this because it is September and the manager/owner who is a Senior with a heart condition is now on her 7th day without her a/c unit being fixed or replaced. Let's see, no one was open because AC went out right before 8. They were one of the only people to answer. First there was no confirmation the guy be there at 7am he just showed up and rang our door bell. We got ripped on pricing in a lot of people's opinions that we've spoken to. Our capacitor went out, we told him exactly what it was they didn't have to go in our addict or anything just replace the $20 part. They didn't have to sit there and guess and figure anything out. It was all done within 10 mins. After talking with multiple contractors we were told we got ripped on pricing. Had multiple quotes from 180-280 tops. The guy was extremely nice but not worth a $420 visit. read more

My AC was not blowing and I called. They sent a technician out in about and hour and one half. That part was good. The service tech opened the outside unit and checked the capacitor. He said a new AC capacitor cost about 300 dollars. When I checked the part number on Amazon it was 12 dollars for the part. I told him to go ahead and replace the capacitor but that I would never do business with them again. I would not recommend this company. I think it would have been more honest if they charged a true amount for the part and 200 for labor. read more

Cogburn's has now replaced both of the units on my large house. 1 unit was 25 years old and 1 unit was 35 years old. The crazy thing is they had also installed those two units that long ago. They also installed an air cleaning system that help with my musty house of course, no system is perfect but Cogburn had a technician out within an hour every time I call for a service call. They also upgraded my drip pan for free when they found out that it could possibly be insufficient size. Byron is an honest man has stood behind his products add service. It's not as cheap as going on Amazon and then hiring some handyman to install your air conditioner, but the price is well worth it for peace of mind and quality. read more

If I could give a "0" stars to Cogburn's, I absolutely would. I called in to have a technician come service one of my rental properties at 5:30PM this week. I kept waiting for a call from my tenant regarding what needed to be done to the A/C and how much it would cost. I live on the west coast, so when 7PM PT rolled around and I hadn't heard from them, I started to get concerned. She finally called and notified me that the technician said he was running late but still had not yet arrived. I promptly pick up the phone and call Cogburn's to calmly inquire why someone had not yet come to check out the A/C roughly 3.5 hours past when they were supposed to show up. They tell me they'll have the technician that was dispatched to my unit call me as soon as he can. Moments later I receive a call from a lovely man named Charlie. He seemed incoherent, but knowing that it's early June in Texas, I chalk it up to him being run into the ground with a ton of people calling in about their broken A/Cs. However, it's imperative to me with it already reaching 100+ degrees in Texas this weekend that he get to the unit to check it out as soon as possible. Upon asking why he was running so late for this appointment, because checking out a unit at 9-10PM at night is NOT okay, he replies slowly with, "Well....I got...sidetracked." With what, Charlie? By the sound of it, you passed on showing up in a timely manner to this unit in order to throw back a few with your buddies. Charlie can't find the unit. Charlie finally finds the place some time after 10PM. Charlie then proceeds to slur out at me what he *thinks* is wrong, but he only *thinks* it's that because his machine told him so and "it don't never lie." I then huff and ask how much it will cost and he can't tell me a thing. I ask him to describe in detail what's wrong, and he can't. He sounds drunk and is completely useless. I call his office to ask what's going on, and they can't tell me a thing. I then tell them that I do NOT want Charlie dispatched to my unit again, and I report that he seemed drunk. The office calls me back today and basically regurgitates back to me the drunken hypothesis that Charlie reached the previous evening quoting me anywhere from $1500-$4300. Livid at the extreme lack of customer service or professionalism here, I call things off and say I'm going with another A/C shop in town. I understand that A/C Repairmen get hit with a lot of work during these extreme Texas summers, but to show up drunk at 10PM at night to a house where the tenants and their two chidlren are absolutely burning up is completely inexcusable. Nobody likes calling repairmen because it's always an inconvenience, but I have never in my life experienced any repair service as unprofessional as what happened yesterday with Cogburn's. As long as I own property in Denton and have friends that do as well, I will encourage us all to stay away from Cogburn's Service General. The experience from yesterday was horrendous, and I will never, ever call them again for any type of service. I called because my AC had gone out. They sent someone right over (so far, so good) and after inspecting the unit, the technician said my compressor had to be replaced, which would cost about $2500. Or, they could sell me a whole new Goodman system for $4000, installed. A quick Internet check told me that price was far too high for a compressor and that Goodman systems are terrible. I understand that companies have to make a profit, but geez. Oh, and they charge $149 for a service call. read more

We had service done by this company earlier this year. The first guy who came out gave me an outrageous quote and seemed like he was new. The owner then gave me a more reasonable price so we went ahead with the service. After the service was done (by the first guy) he told me that it ended up costing more than what the owner told me. Paid them and washed our hands of it. For the past month I have been receiving phone calls from this company about scheduling services with them. They call twice (one right after another) and then sent a text message asking to call the number. The calls are beginning to encroach on harassment. The only reason I am giving to stars instead of one is because the owner himself is very nice, but the employees are shady and annoying. read more

As a long term customer, I am disappointed to report that 5 technicians including Bryon misdiagnosed my air conditioning problem for several weeks. My complaint started that my inside temperature was registering at 88 or higher when my thermostat was sit on 70. in addition it was running non stop...my unit purchased from Cogburn was only 5 years old. The first technician told me that he could not find anything wrong, the second, that the condenser was going into thermal overdrive....instead of replacing it, they replaced the fan, then a small canister...still it did not correct the problem. A third technician came out only to say that it was my thermostat. Finally Bryon came out to make adjustments to the fan. The problem continued. The technician came out again to make adjustments to the fan..we had to stay the night in a hotel...Thus far, I have been out over 800.00 for this matter/repairs. I have text Mr. Cogburn and the Blake, only to have Blake come to my house last Thursday and determine that my problem all along has been a disconnected duct. He taped it up and told me that the installers would be at my home on Friday to correct the matter...it would cost me an additional 200.00. I disputed the charges and requested that Bryon Cogburn call me....he has not contacted me. In addition, they did not come to my house on Friday to fix the problem with the duct...AND I was told by Blake that I would have to wait until Monday and would be charged the 200.00 to repair the problem that has been the problem all along...These are supposed to be trained certified professionals and should have easily made this determination over 6 weeks ago. Very disappointed and have forwarded my concerns to the BBB for further investigation. read more

Very professional service techs; my tech Ricky arrived as he promised and was considerate about putting covers over his shoes to avoid dirt in our house. He was courteous and immediately went to work. We were fortunate that even the owner of the company came by to follow-up on his employees work and introduced himself to us. This man was very knowledgeable and explained in detail our issue (no air blowing from upstairs vents and re-wiring our ac/heater due to improper installation by a previous company) and how they would fix it for us. They did a very good job, and reasonable. My wife and I were truly impressed on their professional and knowledgeable staff this company has, beginning with the owner. I have had them out to do something to make my house cooler after paying thousands for a new unit. They changed out the unit after 2 summers of my home being no cooler than 80 deg. Today I had someone from a different company come out and I went up with him to get an opinion as to why it's still not working, only to find that 2 entire vents are not even contacted to the system! One is completely off and 1 is 1/2 off and not sealed so basically I'm trying to cool attic air that is over 120 degrees. Never ever again read more

First, this is my first time to ever complain about a service. 5/23/2013 Mr. Cogburn came to our home to give us a free home consultation as stated on his company's website. I was very pleased to discover that he was the person who had installed the AC unit 10 yrs ago with the previous owner. He told me that the coil needed to be replaced. He stated that he would have someone here the following day or after the holiday weekend. 5/28/2013 The AC part is still under warranty so the price for repairs was very reasonable. I didn't mind waiting until the following Tuesday for the service. 5/28/2013 (Tuesday) I called to confirm the appointment. I was informed that the wrong part was ordered. I was assured that the right part would be here the following day at 4pm. 5/29/2013 (Wednesday) I left work early so that I could greet the technician on time. He arrived at our home at 5:26pm. I was fine with the tardiness and remained positive. I was just happy that my AC was going to be repaired. HOWEVER, shortly after he arrived he informed me that he was unable to install the coil himself. He told us that the coil was too big/heavy to carry. Plus he didn't know when someone would be able to come finish the job. I directly told the technician that the blame shouldn't be totally directed toward him. He stated that he made a call to his company and was unable to resolve the issue. Every question we had was answered by an "I don't know." I shortly called the service operator to only be told once again that someone would come later in the evening to resolve the problem. I received a call back. I was anticipating a time to reschedule. However they told me to find someone else. I asked the simple one worded question "Why?" The service operator told me "I'm just delivering the message". Apparently the owner just wanted noting to do with us and expected us to drop off the radar. I wasted a week with no AC to endure a company that can't follow through with their commitments. Plus I feel like an insignificant client due to not being explained WHY they refused to fix something they installed. They don't want to honor their own work. They put in my system about 8 years ago, so I thought "Who better to get me going again when my AC isn't working?" Wrong. The tech comes out and tells me that it's the compressor and it's going to be about $2500....for a $800 compressor (thanks, internet). After having another tech from another company come out and tell me that, in fact, it's not the compressor but the $25 capacitor, I quickly decided to never use these guys again. Ripped off a disabled single mom! They advertise "Cheaper" in their Yellowpages ad and that couldn't be further from the truth. They charged me a flat "non-membership" rate of $289 to replace the dual capacitor ($40-50 part) and spent less than an hour at my house. I even asked the repairman if that was a fair price for the part and he replied "yes". But once they have hooked you with a $99 diagnostics fee and fixed your a/c in 100+ heat, you're just happy to pay anything, right? After researching the price of that part, I called 5 other HVAC competitors in the area and they ALL said they would have charged $150-$160 to do the job Cogburn's did. I asked Jack, at Cogburn's, what an hour of labor plus the part would cost and it was still cheaper than what I was charged. I left messages with the staff to have the owners or supervisor to call me and explain why they charged me nearly twice when they advertise to be cheaper. No one returned my call after 3 days. Then they wanted to give me a bunch of free service that I did not need. After saying that was unacceptable, Tammy, the owner's wife said "we will send you a check around 50 dollars or we can come take the part out and give you a full refund. In 105 degree heat? So, I have yet to recieve the check and it has been almost 2 weeks.Tammy also told me that if I report them to the BBB for false advertising and price gouging she would contact all the HVAC repair companies and tell them I never paid my bill and to not allow me to hire them...aka blacklisting me. I am a disabled, single mom and can not afford to be taken advantage of with price gougeing that left me with no grocery money for my child (who also needs medication) and I. Whether you have the money or not, I'm sure you don't want to pay twice what everyone else would charge for any job. DO NOT USE COGBURNS, BUYER BEWARE!!!! Avoid Cogburns at all cost! I called these guys out when my AC stopped working. When the tech arrived (late) he told me that my starter capacitor was bad. I told him to replace it. When he finished the job, he presented me with a $350.00 bill. This is a job that would be completed by any other company for $150-200. He told me that he would knock $50 off the bill if I signed up for a service contract, which I reluctantly agreed to. A few hours after he left, the house failed to cool down. I called them back and they sent out the same tech about 3 hours later. He then told me that I needed a new compressor and that it would cost $1500.00 for a used one. I told him I did not have the money for that and he left. The next day I called out a second opinion. The tech from the second company diagnosed the problem as a bad fan. He suggested that I try to work with Cogburns to make the situation right. I called Cogburns back, I told them that I found out it was a bad fan. They promised to send a tech out right away to make the situation right, and give me their "gold" discount. The second tech arrived about an hour after promised. He then checked the system out, and confirmed it was only the fan that was bad. He then told me that he did not have the part and it would be the next day that the work could be completed. He could not make a promise on what it would cost. I finally told them I just wanted my money back. They then proceeded to charge my card for the balance of the capacitor. I had to call back 4 times before they would agree to refund my money, but only after returning the capacitor (a 29.99 part). The company that I got the second opinion from finished the job(both capacitor and fan for under $400. Cogburns wanted $700 for the same job, and tried to sell me a new compressor when it was not needed. When I returned their capacitor, they refunded my money, but no one there gave me an apology, not even the owner who I ran into in the parking lot. These guys are crooked as a politicians. Owner Byron came over that evening and gave us a reasonable price - no pressure, and even made sure we didn't try to purchase more than what we needed. We signed a contract the following evening and his guy Dan had us up and running by 9:30 pm the the next day. Very impressive response time. I am a widow left with no salary, no health insurance and a large mortgage. Every cent is important to me. Over one year ago, one of Cogburn's service techs tripped an electrical plug to my hotwater heater in the attic during a routine service checkup. The next day I had to pay for a plumber to come diagnose the problem of why I had no hot water. That was 2/2/2011. It was $50.00! 2/3/2011 I called Cogburns to advise them of their mistake and to reimburse me for my undue cost of hiring a plumber. Cogburns tole me they would look into it. I forgot about it until recently and called to remind them. Today the owner calls me to say they found a previous statement dating back to 2009 that I still owe them $50.00. (yeah right). I have never paid part of a bill to Cogburns. After trying to explain to the owner that she was ludicrous and that I have never paid "part of a bill" she was rude, argumentative and hung up on me. I have since heard, from others, their service is poor, over priced with inept techicians. I didn't know any better but, now I do. read more

Bought a new AC from these clowns in June 2010. When they did the installation they forgot to install part of the system so all the cold air was blowing into the attic. Got that fixed, but not without Cogburn trying to get us to pay extra. We've had the system serviced regularly. Had them out to service it in Nov 2011, heat went out Dec. 24, 2011. They charged us to have them come out and look at it. Turns out the "State certified" technician ( the owner's son) that did the service the month before didn't clean everything inside the system that he was supposed to. They still charged is for the service call. We spoke to Tammy Cogburn (the "accountant" for this sideshow) and she said it could take a couple months for a resolution regarding the service fee. After not hearing from them and not getting answers when we called after a few months, we wrote it off. Screw the $30, more important things to worry about right? This summer, as with last summer, the AC could not keep the house below 82 degrees in the heat of the day, there were occasions when the inside temp went even higher! Another "State certified technician" came out, and just like last summer, told us that the best a single unit could do in the dead of summer when it's almost 110 degrees. So we had another AC company come out to figure out what was wrong. The new company told us that we were low on Frion. Either there was a leak in the system or it hadn't been properly charged in the first place. So we called Cogburn's back out to look at it again and told them what the other company had found. Sure enough Cogburn's added some Frion. Not only that, they found a whole the ductwork (that they had installed.) Solution for the hole? Duct tape... I called to complain about being charged for fixes to problems that hadn't been taken care of when we bought the system and to tell Cogburn's that I was going to cancel the $50 check my wife had written. I talked to Tammy about the $30 from the previous winter as well. Tammy explained that even with a warranty everyone has to pay for Frion. We worked out a deal; she would mail us back the $50 check, and since they had wrongfully charged us $30 in December, she would charge $20 to our credit card and we would call it done (except for their highly professional duct tape job.) guess what Tammy did?!?! She charged the $20 to my card AND cashed the $50 check. Will be talking to them Monday to get my money back. Worthless company. Thieves. Would never recommend Cogburns to ANYONE read more
