Fresh food. Great cakes and desserts. "Shirley" is the BEST!

Best coffee shop in Mcallen/Edinburg. The customer service is outstanding. Small coffee and a scone for $4.20. Only complaint is that sometimes the baked goods are fresh, sometimes they are a few days old. You never know if the scone will be fresh, undercooked and doughy or rock hard. And they use dried blueberries instead of fresh ones in their blueberry scones. It's cheaper and tastes better to use fresh so I'm not sure why they do that. read more

Rude and not helpful when I went in on Monday to order a birthday cake (for myself). I was told that the baker was not there and that they had no clue of the types of cakes, prices, etc. I keep telling myself to stop going to this place but somehow always end up each year to order my cake. Well, I was quite disappointed in getting no where in ordering a cake on Monday and got too busy on Tuesday to go in again to attempt to order it (second attempt) since it was very inconvenient due to visitors from out of town that are here for my birthday Very disappointed that I will not have a cake ~ TODAY. Excellent food, service and atmosphere I go at least 3 times a week. They now serve beer & wine so also will continue going back for dinner! I am in the food business and take my sales rep manufactures that are visiting in town and they can't believe there is a hidden gem like this in Edinburg! read more

I was just there about 40 minutes ago to pick up a scoop of tuna / salad and was very disappointed in what you refer to as a 'scoop'. I should have saved my $8+ tax and made my own tuna salad. I do believe that the size of that scoop was a tablespoon. A package of crackers would have been nice. Don't think I'll frequent Coffee Zone ever again. This place is overly rated. This is not the first disappointment, by the way. Very disappointed and still hungry. read more

Their Thursday's thanksgiving preview on November 19 (their lunch special) was very bad. First of all, they might have roasted their turkey one or two days prior. The turkey was reheated and did not taste fresh. It was dry and tasteless. The trimming were so-so. The lunch also came with a slice of pumpkin pie.. But nothing you can write home about it. If they bought it from HEB and cut it up in cloves, then that would be very believable. It seems the kitchen has no quality control. It's sad to experience this. read more

Gotta give this place a very high recommendation for Breakfast and Lunch for sure. Great atmosphere - love the nice soft lighting and big comfy booths. Very classy decor. And the food is very homemade and tasty. Love the Spinach Mushroom quiche which comes with a nice bowl of mixed fruit. I also love their Southwestern Chicken Salad for lunch. The Cafe Americano I had was perfect. Nice and strong. Our office has been getting lunches from here for when we need to cater in and it's always very fresh. The owners have got this right. They've been around for probably 15 years. Now they have a new location in the airport which I will try next time I'm waiting on American Airlines and their typical late flights. Bottom line, this place has the classy location on McColl Rd and is worth even a little bit of a drive for the awesome food. Oh, I forgot to mention the chocolate cake !! Came in for breakfast and ordered the Steak and Eggs with the house coffee. The steak was cooked to order medium and was delicious and well seasoned. The plate came with a home made biscuit and two eggs and what I believe were hash browns made in house. read more

We went in the middle of the afternoon (a little after 2), and the place was relatively full (maybe most of the noon lunchers finishing up?). Based on other reviews, I was bracing myself for an abrasive wait staff and to not be allowed to sit in a booth (we were a party of 2 with a baby), but I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong. Food was delicious with generous side portions (ordered the SW chicken wrap with potato salad), and the staff helpful. A little on the pricier side, but well worth the quality of food. The food is cooked with fresh ingredients, good quality, very tasty. The price is very fair. The atmosphere is really nice. The workers are dressed professionally and trained well- excellent customer service! I haven't been disappointed yet at each of my visits but more and more impressed :) the chef is willing to cook a meal how you would like it as long as you request him too, chef Sam is talented and humble person. Ricardo is too! They're a great team! It's rare to see a great team work together so well for the benefit of the society/community. I plan on giving them business because good places like these are the ones that needs the business. The fish and pasta is better than Peppers Uptown, which is one of my favorite restaurants, and at a better price. Just so you can have something to compare to. But if you want a loud lively bar atmosphere then that would be Peppers, if you want a quiet and cozy but still lively atmosphere then that would be Coffee Zone. :) read more

My wife and I went in for my birthday lunch. The hostess told us to sit where ever we would like. The restaurant was fairly empty and my wife doesn't like to sit at tables in the middle of the restaurant, so we chose a booth. The hostess left and came back with menus and informed us that we would have to move tables because only a party of 4 would be allowed the booths. Didn't she just say we could sit where ever we wanted? I asked if they had other booths we could sit in and was told no. In a bit of shock we sat down at a table (which also sat 4 people) and looked over and saw a guy sitting by himself in a booth on his laptop and drinking water. At this point it was clear that we weren't going to enjoy our lunch after being humiliated and forced to move tables. My wife and I got up and left. On the way out, we pointed out the solo water drinker to the manager and advised them they needed to enforce their unstated, unwritten and unposted seating policy equally. I have honestly never been humiliated and embarrassed in my life. And the staff really seemed not to care. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone I know and will actively discourage anyone from ever going there again. read more
