The Scandinavian breakfast is cute and good but the hard boiled egg is too messy to peel. It's not easy to remove and you're left with a messed up not so much egg. Delicious drinks: Miso Shakerato and flat white are my faves. I personally don't like their vanilla (has saffron). It does take a while to get your order and if it's more than one person, you get you items one or few at a time so others at the table are awkwardly waiting while you have your order. Cute little coffee shop in McAllen. I had tried many in the area and was disappointed, but this was one I liked. ATMOSPHERE: Parking is tight and confusing, so I would recommend parking in one of the open spots in the adjacent shopping complex. The place was also a bit hard to find - it's next to an Enterprise rental car lot and tucked sort of in the back. The inside has limited seating and outlets to work. COFFEE: I got a honey lavender latte. It had a pretty unique flavor and I enjoyed it. It looked like they had a fresh honey lavender syrup they were using. It was just the right amount of sweetness to not overpower the coffee taste. I was a tad disappointed they don't serve the coffee in the erlenmeyer flasks I see in other reviews here. PRICE/VALUE: The latte ($6) was a little more expensive than other places in McAllen but not unreasonable. Overall, there are a lot of coffee shops in McAllen, and I enjoyed my experience at this one. Definitely check it out if into specialty coffee! read more

I was a first timer and had no idea where to go. I just knew I wanted REAL coffee and I wanted to support a local business that one, random morning. Semilla had a terrific, talented baristo that gave me wonderful suggestions. He recommended I give their cortado a go as I wanted genuine coffee and the true experience. It was spectacular! He was very kind, and helpful as I talked his ear off for about 5 minutes about the things I do and don't like about coffee. He was a patient young man. The parking situation isn't the greatest, but I figured it out quickly. No biggy! The inside was clean, modern and bright. I stuck around and did some studying. The parking kinda sucks, you can park in the back but very limited. The decor is simple inside. They do have inside and outside seatings. Don't get me wrong, this place is one of my favorite places to get Matcha and coffee. However, before I go, I always have to mentally prepare myself for the absolute rude customer service. Every time I go in, I get a barista who literally seems like that's the last place they want to be, or at least speaking to a customer is the last thing they want to do. As soon as they take my order, they return to talking to their peers and acting like they just graced me with their time. The only barista who has ever been 100%, is Hector. Even when he is slammed, he is always very nice, respectful, and makes sure that the order is out as soon as possible. Great coffee will only get you so far, granted that is the point of going somewhere, but I like to think of going to a business as an experience, where I spend my money and I spend my time is up to me. Tucked away in a small plaza, this adorable cafe brings bit of city into this town. I had wanted to check out the local coffee shops and came across this one while I was out running errands. There were tables and long benches for people to study, chat and relax. I found the atmosphere refreshing for McAllen. Although it can get pretty noisy in there, I saw plenty of people studying (or so it appeared). I ordered an oatmilk lavender chai latte, and it had a strong flavor but I would definitely order this one sweet! The barista will clarify with you because they can add honey / sweetener. Very thankful he asked though. I did note a smell of salon (possible from next door) but once you're sitting there, it becomes unnoticeable. This place was super cute and I was excited to try it but OMG... no exaggeration we waited 40 minutes to get our coffee. After about 35 minutes of waiting the barista came up to us and asked us what our order was like she had forgotten about us. Then when she finally brought our coffee over she made a snarky remark like it was our fault for not reminding her we were waiting. As if she couldn't see us sitting there?? I try to be patient at food service places and not be all up in their business so the fact she made it seem like it was our fault for not berating her about our coffee was annoying. And to top it off it was SO HOT in there. And there were these weird bugs crawling on the seats by the window. I know what you're thinking, but don't knock it until you try it. If you are looking for something different than your ordinary coffee shop, this is the place to go. Some of their coffee have peculiar ingredients but hey that's the whole experience. I really like their Gibraltar drink (black drink) made from Activated Charcoal. One change that I would make would be to have less ice to be able to have more of the drink itself. Their pastries are DELISH!!! They go well with the coffee. Only downside of the coffee shop is if you go with a big party or more than 4 in your group since it is very small and you might not be able to sit together and enjoy the coffee as a group. read more

Arrived at 8:35a.m. The two men working the front know their coffee, and I ordered an Ethiopian capuchino. They also serve Salvadoran coffee that has a bolder flavoring. The Ethiopian capuchino was cool enough to drink. I don't know if I like this as I'm used to my coffee being served hot. But, I truly enjoyed it. Sadly, truly sadly, there were no pastries out. I mention this due to my reading other YELP reviews and finding out that Semilla serves fresh goodies. This is what won me over to trying their coffee and pastries. Therefore I will be returning to have another coffee and try a fresh pastry! While there is parking, I feel it is limited. They have five parking spaces allotted to the five stores in this small complex. Outdoor seating is available and this is great! Semilla is a very neat, modern coffee cafe/lab tucked away in McAllen. They really take their Lab seriously, having a menu that is very unique, including different methods of brewing (V60, chemex, siphone, aeropress, dragon) and an abundance of coffee cocktails (called tragos) to pick from. The atmosphere is calm and bright and everything that I want a coffee shop to be like. The baristas are also incredibly friendly and really know and love their coffee. It is on the pricey side compared to other coffee shops, but I think it is definitely worth it for the unique drinks and atmosphere. I ordered the Trago flight ($15), which is your pick of any 4 Tragos, and they're about 60% the size of a normal Trago. I got the: 1. Tamarind: 3/10 sweetness with citrus flavoring 2. Pina Madre: This was one of my favorites of the flight. It is such a unique flavor! It is hard to describe, but I would highly recommend it for someone looking for a drink a little on the sweet side. 3. Citrus Apple: You can definitely taste the apple in this drink, but it is a great balance of apple and earthy coffee tones. 4. Expresso tonic: This is an espresso with citrus and tonic water, and I loved it! It is not sweet at all, and the drink is incredibly smooth. This place is a cute cafe. It's situated in a parking lot that seems a bit congested. They have a couple outdoor tables and chairs but most of the seating is inside. Each time I've visited there have been people inside on their laptops. I don't really see any more than about 12-15 people fitting in there at one time. However, the service has always been great. Each time I've gone in I've had a different barista who has taken the time to explain some of the drink orders and never made me feel rushed. I consider myself a coffee lover and aim to visit local coffee shops when I travel. So, when in McAllen - I was told Semilla was the place to try. I ordered their Honey Lavender Latte which tasted like nothing but honey and coffee and was quite bitter. Their customer service was mediocre at best. The young lady at the counter was distracted and unfriendly. Location was very cute and quaint but everything else lacked, especially the coffee. Unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype because no cup of joe is a worth risking your life for. Semilla has been a staple coffee spot in the RGV for the past few years. I wish they would expand on parking spaces, yet Enterprise has taken over most of the spaces. The Matcha Fizz was decent. It had the fizz but didn't taste any matcha. Love to see that seating expanded, however the space is quaint. Hopefully they can expand to compete with various RGV grown coffee shops. read more

Came down to the Valley to visit family and came upon this AMAZING coffee shop! Yes, they don't have any syrups to add flavor to your coffee but they offer an exquisite selection of coffee. When the coffee itself is very good there's not need for flavoring that would only taint there unique flavors. The barista was friendly, very helpful and knows his coffee! They also roast their coffee in-house! If you guys haven't gone... you need to stop what your doing and GO!!! I had such a great experience! We ordered the Gibralter (active charcoal latte) iced, it was very smooth and creamy! If you want something less traditional, they have the Tragos Menu which was more like coffee cocktails. So I got the Citrus Apple which is made out of citrus, sangria with cold brew and apple and grapefruit chunks! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! read more
