They didn't have any exciting coffee flavours that separated them from other places. And the ones they did have were pretty mediocre at best. Dropped by Coffee Tree and have a cappuccino using Indie Coffee Passport. Coffee Tree is a great neighbourhood Coffee Shop. On this particular afternoon, there were a lot of locals hanging out here.. sipping their coffee with snacks and surfing the Internet using Coffee Tree's Wifi connection. Coffee beans here are going for $20/lb and up with Blue Mountain selling for $60!! But since Coffee Tree roasted all their organic coffee in small batches, I guess that's the price to pay. Watching the actual roasting process was kind of interesting though. Small sized Cappuccino was served in a see through glass mug. The froth was thick and creamy resulted in the presentation. It was kind of pretty to look at and looks interesting in my photo..... I went there ordered an iced oat latte and nanimo bar. The oat latte tasted so nasty it made me gag and the nanimo bar only tasted like butter no coconut. When I told the barista to change it they changed it to change my latte they changed it to a strawberry lemonade which smelled awful. My friend ordered a peanut butter cookie which didn't have peanut butter in it. And she ordered jasmine tea which didn't smell like jasmine and smelled like red rose & tasted like it too, worst $11 I spent. read more

The setup is really nice for the cafe with lots of seating and nice interior. They apparently roast their own beans as well. Now for the main attraction the cappuccino I ordered mine with a sweetener and Barista forgot to add it in. No biggie happens all the time and I was offered a new drink for free but I declined. The presentation is different from your regular cappuccinos as its served in a glass mug (you can see the nice layers) The drink itself was bad initial taste was extremely bitter. It did mellow out a bit as the milk mixed in with the drink. No latte art to speak of as the milk was frothed (not very well I might add) and just dolloped on the espresso shot. I finished half of my drink and left. 1.5 star for cappuccino 3 stars for the setup There is a much better option across the street so if I have to I would rather drink over there read more

Cozy little cafe with lots of coffee selection! I had a double shot cappuccino that was very flavourful and strong, which is what I like! My boyfriend, however, didn't like his Kenyan drip coffee and found it bland and watered down, and the take home coffee is quite pricey (hence the 4 stars). I do like the seating area inside and out (they have a cute patio area ins the back), and they have cool coffee machines and gadgets everywhere! I'm also a big fan of their coffee station, where they use reusable spoons instead of stir sticks, and big jars of brown sugar and jugs of cream so we aren't using individually packed sugar/cream. I bought an apple cider from here and it was quite possibly the worst apple cider I've ever had in my life. It was just warm really really really sweet apple juice. I mean, perhaps it's unfair for me to give a poor review to this establishment based on that, but COME ON. It's apple cider. CIDER. NOT JUICE. Don't try and pass it off as some great warm lovely alternative to coffee or tea and then have it be half-assed. Okay. I feel better. I will now try and end this review on a positive note. Nah. The music they have playing is nice and relaxing, suits the cafe quite well. Prices are quite standard for a cafe like starbucks, aroma, etc.... paid $2 for a small brewed coffee. There's a nice variety of drinks and foods, serving thinga auch as breakfast bagels, burritos, and a wide variety of pastries and desserts! They'll take your name so you can sit down while they make your food, and once it's ready, they call your name out. Let's give this place some love, people! An independent coffee shop that has been roasting it's own beans for 23 years and has survived in the face of Timothy's, Second Cup and Starbucks, all close by! They didn't have a cortado on the menu, so I described a cappuccino the way I prefer it (NOT as pictured in the accompanying photos), and my wish was her command. I remember going to this place 20 years ago when no other shop roasted their own, and if I'm not mistaken, they used to be open later in the evening. Coffee Tree has some seriously outstanding coffee. I guess they should. They tout themselves as being Toronto's first onsite roastery--since 1988. Despite all that time, it's not a colossal roasting operation. In fact, it's a small machine in the front window of the shop, but that's part of the appeal of this place: fair-trade coffee roasted onsite, in small batches, right in front of your eyes. As it becomes available, Coffee Tree scrawls all of their different roasts and blends of contrasting kinds of beans on a chalkboard near the front entrance. Some of these blends and roasts change from time-to-time; others are Coffee Tree's signatures. On any given day, you can expect to find Casa Primi, Sensuous Morning, Tuscany, and Millionaire's Mixture; some of their well-known signatures. Other days, you can find blends that have been created exclusively for the week or month. Regardless of what you choose, this coffee is superb, roasted perfectly, and balanced. Sip it slowly, and you'll definitely find complexity. There's the perfect blend of sweet and savoury and none of the unpleasant bitterness you'd expect from other coffee shop brews. But it ain't all coffee at Coffee Tree. They've got a surprisingly detailed food menu, considering it's a coffee joint. From breakfast, lunch, and dinner, to French toast, sandwiches, and empanadas, they've got something for whatever time of day you go. They've also got a chilled dessert fridge featuring in-house made desserts, which includes what they call--and I'm inclined to agree--the World's Best Carrot cake. If you're there, give it an unregrettable try. The shop layout is the typical long narrow space of most Toronto street-level businesses, and unfortunately, their furniture and decorating ideas aren't much of a help. Despite having unforgettable coffee, the space makes the experience of drinking it feel closed off. They do, however, support local art by featuring a local artist's work on their walls for sale, and that certainly is a plus, but when I was there, the art wasn't something I was particularly captivated by; but I'm told it changes. All this place really needs a little reno, and it would be near perfect, or at least get 5 stars in my review. Despite the poor decor choice, they still roast some brilliant coffee. Even if you're not in the neighbourhood, it's worth the trip. read more

Yum! Unsweetened almond milk in my latte is a must for me. Luckily I was pleasantly surprised on my first visit here! Many vegan and gf options too if that helps those with dietary restrictions. I also had a delicious morning glory cookie that was both vegan and gluten free. There were carrots in that cookie??? But it was so tasty!!! Perfect way to help with my 4 hour wait while my mum had a doctors appointment across the street. Also I read they had gluten free French toast on weekends! I'll be back for those. read more

This is going to be a bit of a strange review, because I have actually never been here. And yet the Coffee Tree Roastery (CTR) is an integral part of my everyday. They have the most amazing thing called the "Coffee Club" where they mail me fresh roasted espresso beans each and every month so that I can enjoy them at home. They also have a regular coffee club for those that prefer drop coffee. And all of their coffees are organic/fair trade. Each month I get 1 lb of freshly roasted CTR house blend that is so smooth and flavourful (a chocolate undertone) and very little acidity. And I get 1 lb of something else. The coffees come from all over the world and range in value (loved my holiday gift of Kona from Hawaii). Each package also contains tips and directions to make "the perfect cup", storage information, recipes and more. Customer service is fantastic and you can tell when you read Su's letters and emails that she is truly passionate about what she does. I have to say the best way to wake up and start your day is drinking a cup of java made from freshly roasted and ground beans - in the comfort of my own home. Since I am too lazy to roast my own... this is truly the next best thing. I do intend to make the trek to their actual location some day but for now, I am content to start my day with CTR. read more

After being told that it was an hour and a half wait at a restaurant close by, we stumbled into Coffee Tree Roastery for a quick coffee/pastry to tide our hangry stomachs. From the outside and from the tables that were all filled, we were expecting to find a little hidden gem. I'm not sure if it was just too busy, and they were understaffed, but all the items we got at this business were just not up to our expectations. We got the cinnamon bun pastry and two soy cappuccinos. So....probably one of my first dislikes was how they organized the line.... without real direction, I couldn't tell where the line started/ended...which lead to someone cutting in front of me. The cashier, was also new, or training and took an extra 2-5 minutes to take our order. Although friendly, not entirely efficient. We mentioned we'd like to stay in, and I thought they would naturally offer to warm our pastry, but instead we had to request it. The soy cappuccinos took about 5 minutes to prepare... Mind you, there was only 1 person in front of me, so it would be understandable if it was busy... once we got the cappuccino, it was extremely underwhelming... Our cappuccino reminded me of something that I could make at home with my small frother, and did not really justify the $5.00 I was charged for each. I wasn't expected some word class barista, but our soy cappuccinos were clearly made from the same froth...and so our drinks did not meet the rims because the barista was trying to ration out the lack of milk she originally frothed. I also watched her prepare....and was very underwhelmed. I guess i expected more considering this looked like a individually run coffee joint and not one of the major competitors... Needless to say, I won't be jumping to return again, but I would like to maybe at a less busy time to see if their quality is better we had that day. read more

Coffee Tree is a good alternative both to the donut-shop ambiance of Coffee Time and the over-commercialized hipness of chains like Starbucks and Timothy's--all of which are within a block or two of Coffee Tree. They've got their own nice blends and gooey snacks, and while the shop follows the alternative coffee shop template pretty closely, it's not a cookie-cutter operation like some competitors. You can tell that Coffee Tree roasts and grinds their own stuff because every once and a while there's some kind of snafu inside, and you can smell burnt coffee from a block away. I come here often for coffee before heading to work. The ambience is very nice and cozy and the service is great. The food offerings are good, not stellar, and the overall experience is "excellent but basic (not too trendy/fancy) coffee house that every good neighbourhood needs". Lots of people meet here with friends during the day. For better AND worse it is not a perfect place to set up your laptop and work for hours because the tables and chairs aren't set up well for it. A nice enough back patio when it's warm outside but it doesn't get much sun and Jane subway station is right behind it. Coffee (I always get their pre brewed standards) is better than Starbucks. I don't remember having their espresso drinks. The muffins are decent (and probably too caloric). Overall it's a great place to meet friends, etc. if you're on the West side of town and a great option near Jane and Bloor. read more

The staff were amazing, Barista Rachel was phenomenal and fun to be around. What I did not like was the taste of the espresso I ordered. I have had Espresso both in North America and Europe but this one was a little different. I felt like you could taste the raw bean in this Espresso which took away from the flavour of the drink. Espresso is smooth, not organic tasting. It tasted like I was eating a raw coffee bean. Espresso should be smooth, balanced and flavourful which this was not. I would come back for the customer service and to try the food but not for the espresso. read more

They have more than just coffee here. They seem to be an indie coffee shop plus a light lunch place. I came in here after a 10 km walk and wanted an iced coffee drink. Unfortunately, they didn't have cold drinks yet since it was early April and I decided just to a double shot latte. It was wonderful and had just the right mix of milk and coffee and was quite aromatic. The baristas were also very nice as they saw me dripping and offered me water. Verdict: great little place to chill and have a wonderful coffee. Loses one star for not having cold drinks all year round. read more

Coffee Tree is my local neighbourhood coffee haunt. The space is narrow and cozy but I like their quiet backyard patio for catching up with friends. I generally get the green tea and a ginger molasses cookie but have had their ice coffee and drip coffees as well. There are better options in the neighbour but it's tried and true. read more

I seem to be frequenting Bloor West Village lately. While I had some time to spare, I decided to check this place out. I had noticed it while I was at Dark Horse the other night. I should have research a bit more to find out that this place had no wi-fi so I could have tweeted. Aside from this, it's a quaint little cafe with older seating, including a bench that is off to the side in the middle of the cafe. The cappuccino I ordered was kind of warm and wished it was a bit hotter. Even I noticed another person who complained that her coffee was not hot enough. Looks like many of their items are home baked like their cookies. They do have a patio with minimal seating, which I had preferred to go to, but since I wasn't in the mood of people watching and was a bit peeved there was no wi-fi, I decided to drink and dash. Of course I paid silly..lol If you want to read a book while enjoying your hot beverage, then this might be the place for you. read more

To kill time while waiting to go for brunch at the Good Fork, we went to the nearest coffee shop until our table was ready. Upon arriving at the Coffee Tree, I really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere was very cozy and non-pretentious. The true test with any cafe is obviously its coffee. Unfortunately, it did not meet my standards. I ordered a drip coffee and it was very weak and bland. Not sure if this is an exception for this cafe since it has pretty decent reviews. All you have to do to know that I'm a huge fan of good coffee is to meet me first thing in the morning before I've had one. Having had my quota of coffee in the morning, I did some shopping in Bloor West Village having forgotten to pick up coffee beans when I was doing groceries. I stepped into Coffee Tree hoping that they would be able to help me out. The first thing that you are hit with is the sound of small roasters rotating the coffee like small cement mixers. The aroma that fills the place is excruciatingly great. The richest smells of coffee that I have experienced have come from this place. Not only do they sell coffee by the cup and have small snacks and sandwiches available for purchase they also sell the beans. I was in the mood for some Kenya AA, so I asked the guy behind the counter if he had any. He said no, but the Kenya AA was available in the Continental Blend, if I liked. He also said that he could roast me some, but he tends to roast it somewhat lighter so as to capture the flavour more than a darker roast. "Would that be OK?" That's when I figured out that this guy knew his stuff, and that this place was one of the best places in the city to get coffee. Those who face me in the morning should be thankful. I love this coffee. I travel across the city to buy my coffee for home here regularly. The price is comparable to what you get at well recognized chain stores across the city, but they roast their own, and it's SO much better.
