balzac's feels like one of those neighbourhood cafés that quietly becomes an unofficial extension…read moreof campus once the new school year gets underway. i stopped in during the first week of classes at toronto metropolitan university, and the back to school orientation energy was definitely in the air: students everywhere, laptops open, people chatting and settling in for the afternoon. there was a lively buzz, but it still felt relaxed rather than hectic. the interior has that classic european café meets toronto feel that balzac's does so well. the space is bright and airy, with huge windows, white ceilings and exposed ductwork, pendant lights, warm wood tables and beautiful patterned floor tiles that add a little old world personality. there's a mix of communal and smaller café tables, high bar stools and outdoor patio seating, making it equally suited to a quick coffee or settling in with a laptop. people were constantly coming and going, but it never felt chaotic. the connection to campus is very much intentional. balzac's began as a coffee cart in 1993 before opening its first café in stratford in 1996, and has since grown to 16 cafés across ontario. inspired by the grand cafés of paris, the brand gives each location its own sense of place. this one is tucked into the toronto metropolitan university image arts building and serves as a gathering spot for students, faculty and visitors, with its glass walls looking out onto campus. and yes, this is very much a laptop kind of café. there were people working away, but it didn't have that silent library feeling. instead, it felt like a comfortable third place between classes, work and home. i noticed they have limited matcha with a selection of syrups, but the seasonal caramel apple latte caught my attention instead. with fall just around the corner, it felt like exactly the right time for those warm, autumnal flavours. i went with oat milk, and it was a fun seasonal change from my usual café order. i was also happy to see a display of fresh looking salads and went with the beet bliss, made with red beet, green kale, quinoa, feta, chickpeas, honey, apple cider vinegar, pistachios, shallots, hemp hearts, extra virgin olive oil, mint, dijon and thyme. it was colourful, fresh and felt healthy, with the earthy sweetness of the beet playing nicely against the kale, quinoa and chickpeas. the pistachios and hemp hearts added welcome crunch, while the feta brought a salty creaminess that worked especially well with the sweeter beet. the dressing was probably my favourite part. it was flavourful without overpowering the ingredients, although i definitely wished there had been a lot more of it. only a quarter way through, things were starting to feel slightly underdressed. the one practical miss was the bamboo fork. it looked perfectly fine, but wasn't particularly effective for actually eating the salad. a proper fork would have made things considerably easier, and honestly, chopsticks probably would have worked better too for chasing down the quinoa, hemp hearts and other little bits. not exactly a culinary crisis, but when you're trying to eat a salad gracefully in public, the utensil should probably be on your side. what i liked most was the atmosphere. the first week of classes crowd gave the café plenty of energy, while the bright interior, different seating options and steady stream of students and coffee drinkers made it feel genuinely lived in. it's easy to see how this could become a regular stop between classes or a place to spend an afternoon getting work done. balzac's has clearly built its reputation around being more than just a coffee shop, and this location makes that especially apparent. it feels like a little bridge between university life and the surrounding neighbourhood, somewhere to grab a seasonal drink, have lunch, open the laptop or simply take a break between classes.

Supercoffee has been in the Mt. Dennis community for now 12 years. I had just never been there…read morebefore but one Saturday I was making extra deliveries during the Christmas rush and needed a coffee. This place was my saviour. It wasn't until a few later until June 2025 I would join The Mt. Dennis 5K Fun Run Club that is on every Saturday. Every 5K Run starts and finishes at The Supercoffee. After the run each participant is awarded a Free small drink of their choice. After a few weeks I really started to notice how busy this little coffee place is and I guess that's one of the reasons this shop has now been here for 12 years. It's been here for 12 years because the coffee is amazing. It's just not the coffee but there's nice things to eat with your coffee. There's muffins, cookies, danishes, nut bars (energy bars - no sugar added) There's bananas and empanadas too. Some of the items are made at the Supercoffee, but the other items are prepared by local bakeries. All the staff that work here are very nice and friendly too. This place is a nice gem for this community, and has a nice atmosphere soft lighting, soft music playing. There are a few big tables inside as well with 5 small tables. You can work here on your laptop however there's restrictions on the weekends as space is needed so it's not allowed. You would be better to use the library across the street. In the summer months there's a nice patio in the back as well with music playing there too. If you live in or live close by to the York, South Weston area and specifically Mt. Dennis you should stop by and get yourself a coffee at this most amazing establishment.
