I'm a long time resident of Stone harbor and have gone to coffee talk for years, but it has seriously gone down hill (with the exception of their prices and their attitude which has sky rocketed). Their policy regarding bagels drew the line for me... I will no longer patronize this place. I tried to spend money at this place and they tell me they cannot sell me a "loose" bagel... no dozen loose bagels, no 1/2 dozen loose bagels, not even ONE loose bagel I was told (and not very politely). So they have bagels that basically they won't sell you unless you buy one of their overpriced bagel sandwiches.... A word to the owners, How about you just buy more bagels so you can sell people whatever type of bagel they want (loose, sandwich, whatever) read more

If I was rating on coffee alone this place gets 5 stars in my book. The drip coffees are the best, especially the flavored ones. So delicious and unique (like Bananas Foster and Chocolate Raspberry) but let's be honest... a coffee shop isn't just about the coffee, it's also about the atmosphere. Rating over all experience it gets 3 stars. Service isn't the best. I get attitude often from the teens working there about all sorts of things. Like the half and half being empty or asking for the butter for my bagel to be on the side. Worst service in all of SH. After 3 straight days of terrible service, my wife refused to even go near 97th street. Stubbornly, I went back. Only to have the 5 girls behind the counter ignore me in the empty store. After getting my ice coffee, they did not have any tops sitting out front. I finally got a one of the girls to come over and asked her if she could get me a top... she acted like they didn't have any and walked away. Another customer from across the store signaled to me that there were a few tops on another counter. She commented to me "these girls must still be tired." My response to her "That's what I thought after day 1, but after 4 straight days it's clear that they are they are lazy, rude, and have no work ethic." My wife witnessed the owner's anger on day one. She chewed out another customer who questioned the price of his coffee (they had the wrong price posted on the board). The following day my wife asked for a cup of water for my 19 month old son. It was 97 degrees outside. They rudely responded that the cup was 50 cents. I realize that people go here because it's the only coffee place in SH/Avalon. My response is that somebody needs to open another one and put them out of business. read more

I give 2 stars just for the fun live music Thursday evenings. Coffee talk also has a relaxed atmosphere, however I do not like their coffee. It doesn't have much bold coffee flavor. I've gotten bagel sandwiches here twice and every time the bagel is stale. I know it is hard to keep things fresh for long at the shore, but they should find a better way to keep their bagels fresh. The girls working there seem to be uninterested in serving you coffee and that is not a good feeling to give customers. read more

Coffee Talk is very overpriced. The strawberry smoothie I got cost $6, and that was on the low end. It blatantly used strawberry syrup and tasted like a Coolatta from Dunkin Donuts. However, as my friends and I were leaving, one noticed signs in the front of the store WITH NO PRICE LISTED that advertised tarot card readings on wednesdays at a particular time. We were looking for something to do so we got readings done for each of us. The woman was attired in COMPLETELY NORMAL CLOTHING (i.e. stone harbor shorts) and gave readings in five minutes that were very vague and frequently assumed inaccurate things about us. As we got up to leave, she said we each had to pay her $20, and, like the young suckers we are, after some fumbling we paid it (we are ~18 years old). We were then out $60 for nothing WITHOUT ANY WARNING. Coffee Talk should not allow people to scammed like this. If you are allowing a scam artist to use your shop, write signs with the price clearly noted on every sign. Still furious, will not go again. read more

If the sign on your building says coffee and bagels and someone comes in to buy bagel why would you deny to sell them a dozen or even a half dozen bagels. The cashier said I had to special-order them even though it's the day after Labor Day and the island is pretty much vacant at this point. So you would rather deny selling me bagels and loss sale then to hold on to them for nobody. I wanted to buy other items but was told it's Cash Only. It's the 21st century everyone takes credit cards. So you would rather me us your ATM and pay the surcharge to take my money out so you do not get the charge. Great business moto. Had to buy other items just to pry 4 bagels out of your display, would have bought more if I could have used a card. Step your game up and get better customer service. I've been in the hospitality service for over 17 years and never would turn down a customer to leave a bad taste in their mouth. read more

I really don't enjoy giving businesses a bad review but I'm compelled to provide a few comments about Coffee Talk. The quality of the baked goods (scones, muffins) are simply not good compared to the quality you can get at other local places. The coffee is bland and uninspired. The place is dirty and the staff is rude. I'm not sure how a place could survive this long given how many people leave disappointed. There are other much better alternatives on the island. I'm a huge supporter of local businesses in the borough but I can't support this establishment any longer. I will continue to read reviews to see if improvements are made . I suspect the positive reviews are coming from long-time customers and friends of the owner that have become used to the mediocracy of this place. read more

This place for the most part is great. My cousins and I went there almost every morning we were at the shore for our coffee. One barista was fairly rude to my nine year old sibling the one day. All over another employe forgetting to add whip cream to the order. It does get busy but no need to yell at customers. Especially when they were not in the wrong to begin with. read more

Stopped by on a morning bike ride to pick up some bagels and coffee. Hand-written sign on the door said " No Dozens No Half-Dozens Bagels" but I was only looking for a few. I asked the counter woman for 3 bagels and she quickly told me they can't sell them to me. I politely pointed out that I only wanted 3 and the sign said no half-dozens or dozens. She gave me an exasperated sigh and said that she could go check but they really cannot sell bagels because they need them for sandwiches. I told her not to bother and I went elsewhere. I can understand that they want to sell the higher mark-up sandwiches rather plain bagels so I can accept that they might have to limit their sales. But perhaps they can order better (after all they do offer unadorned bagels and it was only 9:00 in the morning!) Or at least put up a sign that actually says "bagel sandwiches only! Or, perish the thought, greet the request with a polite, "I am really sorry but we are low on bagels this morning and we are only using them for sandwiches." That might have actually encouraged me to come back another time---which I will now not do! read more

I've been here a few times and the coffee is decent but very overpriced! The hot coffee was like warm at best however, when I had the iced coffee it was good. The oatmeal bar looks good but I have not tried it. Overall, not a bad place but be prepared to pay a high price. read more

The theme here is so casual and unique (in a good way) This is a must go to if you are in Stone Harbor. They have great prices, kids will love it, you can read, chat, or even watch some tv. Let's take the complaints one at a time: 1. Pricing: ALL prices are listed on the boards behind the counter. If you were "appalled" at spending $14 on a breakfast sandwich, a quick glance at the menu would have told you what to expect. 2. Pricing part B: they depend on mostly summer clientele; they have to make their year's profit in a short couple of three or four months. OF COURSE they're going to charge more. 3. Attitude: this is one I don't understand: I've had rushed service (when people are standing two and three deep at the counter, what else can you expect). Crummy attitude: water off a duck's back. I'm there for coffee, not to make friends with the servers. If they're having a lousy day, why in the world should that affect me. A little tolerance and some selective forbearance would solve the attitude problem like "that" (snap of fingers). 4. Quality of food: they're neither Starbucks nor the Ritz Hotel. I don't go in there expecting "haute cuisine." 5. Ambiance: Lorine B (who visited the day before my birthday!!) said "...coffee shop isn't just about the coffee, it's also about the atmosphere". I ABSOLUTELY AGREE: I also realize that a coffee shop is just that: it's not the lobby of the Grand Hotel. My wife and I get our coffees (and whatever extras our hearts desire); find two comfy chairs (or sit on the benches till the comfy chairs become available and we talk, or read, or just watch customers come in and go out. read more

Without a doubt, the best coffee shop I've ever been to. It has so much character and everyone working there is so nice and down to Earth. This is a perfect hang out spot when you can't think of anything to do. Also, perfect for breakfast or lunch.. or both! I had my first wheat grass shot at Joe's smoothie area inside. I was skeptical at first, but they're delicious and crazy good for you. This is also the only place I know of that prepares acai bowls, although I didn't try one. The smoothies are prepared with fresh fruits and there are so many combinations to choose from. For a beach town, their prices are reasonable. If you're in Stone Harbor, I highly reccommend you take the time to stop at Coffee Talk (on 97th street) to try a wheat grass shot and a smoothie! You definitely will not regret it! read more

I'm very DISAPPOINTED with coffee talk. I'm fine with their overpriced and bland drinks, but I'm not okay with them hosting a scam artist. On my way out of the shop I saw several signs at the front of the store offering tarot card readings so my friends and I decided to give it a try. It was free so why not, right? Well. After spending five minutes on a bullshitty fortune she proceeded to tell us that we could pay her now. 20 DOLLARS EACH. And even after we told her that we were unaware we would have to pay because the signs didn't say anything and she didn't tell us before the reading, she continued to ask us to pay. So, we payed sixty dollars for a less than average tarot card reading that lasted about five minutes. I would not recommend dining at a coffee shop that serves as a venue for children to get scammed. The breakfast restaurant next door serves delicious coffee, in case you were wondering. read more
