The house is built on a hill, and when a heavy rain hits us after a dry spell, bad things happen. When the last payout finally came in, we'd planned to earmark a big chunk for fixing the drainage once and for all. Enter Keep Austin Landscaped. Even though our house is small and they usually don't do such small jobs, they came up with a great plan to reroute the water from uphill and guide it around our house to prevent flooding. Initially they suggested an inexpensive galvanized wire and rock wall to keep the water from flowing into our house, but later decided that a better, solid concrete retaining wall would do the job better - - for just the same price. And then, of course, COVID happened. Nevertheless, the KAL team was still ready to work with us as long as we gave the workers their distance, which of course was only fair. I really appreciated them coming out and risking getting sick to do that work, especially when we were really scared that any time now we might flood again. Our uphill neighbors initially agreed to allow us to install a French drain on their property to allow water to drain into the alley behind our houses instead of into our house, but then reneged for reasons we still don't understand. We offered to adjust planning to take any specific concerns into account or seek mediation, but they insisted that we not do anything on their side of the hill. Of course it's difficult to route water away from a house down hill if you can't do anything before the water gets there! The nice folks at KAL tried several times to speak to my neighbors in both English and Spanish on our behalf, and in the end our neighbors allowed them to complete the plan by extending gravel drainage along the shared fence. We've just had the first heavy rain after a dry spell since they've been out here, and not a hint of flooding. Working with them has been an absolute joy, and we heartily recommend them for anyone with a landscaping or drainage issue.

And then one day, she was bootin' her lawn fool. And out of nowhere came the dirt-y-deeds crew. Felipe, that is. Like gold. Saved me. I was at my wit's end trying to find a reliable person/crew to do my lawn. I tried Craigslist, word of mouth, Yellow Pages. They either didn't show up or didn't show up consistently or they were very unreasonably priced. When voicing my frustration, a friend handed me a card for Dirt-y-deeds and said her landlord used him. She couldn't vouch for him, but why not? It's not like my lawn will mow itself, and I don't have the time (okay, more I don't have the inclination, but let's not get distracted by details like this). Enter Felipe Comacho. I pay $25 every two weeks for my lawn to be mowed and edged, which is awesome, but the most important part to me is that he shows up! I never anticipated that being such a huge obstacle when I bought my house. Don't people want to create a name for themselves with their business? Don't they need repeat business to grow? Word of mouth? Felipe has also cut my tree branches ($20), cut down and hauled away an entire tree ($25), and loaded up and took into oblivion (or so I thought) my trash and wood leftovers from replacing my fence ($25). He knows I don't have a truck and recognizes when I need a little extra help..sometimes before I do. I enjoy conversing with him and can really tell he cares about his customers. Get this: when he is running late or needs to change our routine, he calls. Wha? Yes, he calls. Whatever came of those items he hauled away, you ask? He recycled everything he could, including using the old fence slats and posts to make ground stakes. He prides himself on being eco-friendly, which is important to me, too. I don't get how he does it so cheaply, but I won't start to question him, that's for sure. Well, now it's time to say goodbye to overgrown lawns and beds. I thought that it was odd that his dad came with him since he has supposedly been doing this work for over 9 years, but now I know dad was babysitting him. The quote automatically baked in a tip. I asked for clippings to be bagged, beds weeded, etc each time. If everything had been perfect for the price ok, but not for the nonsense with him. There are so many items, first he put a 30 pound bag of Ironite on the base of a single tree, a 30 pound bag of Ironite is $38 + tax so 41.14 after tax down the tube and a tree that will fry and have to be removed. When his father told him that he should not have done that his solution was to water it in vs raking it out to the drip line where it should have been to begin with. Not only did I tell him very specifically how to do it he said "yes, I understand". 9+ years of experience my foot, I should not have had to tell him how to do it to begin with. His excuse for this stunt was because there was scat there, so the tree is about 15 feet tall and the drip line is at about 15 feet so he tried to claim that there was scat at the drip line in an arc for 15 feet across the yard. He would have had to mow over enough scat that he would have had to pick it up before mowing, this would also mean that the racoons would have had to map out the scat in an arc of 15 feet, no way, period. I also went and smelled the clippings, zero scat smell, I also looked for the scat, I found one small amount near the base of the tree, exactly where he should not have been messing around anyway. He put so much Ironite on flowers that it would have fried every single one of them had it not all been picked out and then he tossed some in pots, who puts a bunch of fertilizer directly in plant pots with supposedly 9 years of experience? So not only am I out a bag of Ironite, I now have to water and water and water to abate the burn so yet more money for no reason, not to mention the amount of walking which is a real issue due to being disabled. The only reason to pull this stunt with 9 years of experience is to kill the tree so he had something else to charge me for He apologized, but laughed as he was apologizing, literally like a grinning i----. I also caught him pushing down backwards on the fence gate, interestingly they do fence work; why would anyone push down on a fence gate period other than to create an issue that needs to be fixed? Next, I told him to mow the grass as high as possible and it is absurdly short and I told him not to burn the edges when he edged, all burned. Next there is horseweed in the back and I told him the day before during the quote, which took over an hour of walking him around and I am disabled so every step is painful, to mow it as if it were grass, he texts me and asks if he should mow it, but did not bother texting or asking about the fertilizer and the tree? He told me during the quote that he would hand weed the area around the air conditioners and then told me that he did not weed anything on that side because I told him to not use the weedwhacker around the air conditioners. Next, a very large bed in front where saplings grow, he did zero, other beds grass was left along with saplings Moved chairs were the grass is not even long enough to mow and left them. I told him exactly where to put the compost bin at the curb before he left, nothing at the curb, his excuse "I thought you meant for next time", so he knows I am disabled and leaves it for me to take out when it was literally the last thing that I reminded him to do. I also had to remind him to lock the gate, seriously a disable single female and I need to remind 2 grown men to lock the gate. He also told me he could do other odd jobs during the estimate, he shows up with a dead drill. The quote was $175 for a quarter acre, but I get bagging, hand weeding, etc takes extra time so I agreed. I waited a day before deciding to do the full feedback and this arrogant little snot told me to get another company, as if I would ever use them again, just how dumb does he need to be to think I would ever consider him for use ever again. He is also out another 5 jobs as 5 different neighbors would have used him had I been happy him, which also basically means he is out of the running for a single job in this neighborhood.

Earlier this winter, I properly winterized our irrigation system using the blowout method. Not long after, we noticed unusually high water bills and suspected a leak. We brought in a plumber to inspect the house and Cox Irrigation to check the irrigation system. The plumber ultimately found the issue--a water heater problem--but Cox Irrigation told my wife (while I was out of town for work) that they found no issues and left. A few weeks later, Winter Storm Fern hit. Shortly afterward, we discovered a major irrigation leak. That's when we realized Cox Irrigation had turned our irrigation system back on during their earlier visit--and left it on--meaning the system was no longer winterized going into a freeze. We had them return to provide a repair estimate. They identified cracks in our previously intact above-ground backflow preventer but completely missed the larger leak. My wife approved a $1,300 repair based on their assessment. As I became more involved, it became clear that Cox Irrigation's actions may have directly contributed to the damage. I contacted the company to raise this concern and ask for a reasonable adjustment to the bill. Instead of any attempt at resolution, I received a call from the owner, Joe Cox, who responded with a profanity-laced tirade. He dismissed our concerns, claimed we couldn't prove anything, and hid behind the fact that the repair had already been approved. He then escalated things further by threatening to come onto our property and remove the backflow preventer--despite me clearly stating multiple times that we intended to pay the invoice (that actually breaks three laws in Texas). This was not just poor service--it was deeply unprofessional and aggressive behavior from the owner of the company. At no point did he attempt to listen, de-escalate, or provide even basic customer service. Between the apparent mishandling of our irrigation system, incomplete diagnostics, poor communication, and the owner's conduct, I cannot recommend Cox Irrigation to anyone.

They knocked out the work fast. They took great care to remove the trees safely and without damaging my property, neighbor's property, or the power lines. The stump was ground up and removed quickly and cleanly.
