Wanted Mexican food and decided to give this place a try. Walked inside and it was a complete clusterfuck! People, including myself, were standing around trying to figure out where to go. You enter the restaurant in a sort of lobby/vestibule area where servers grab orders and drinks from a fountain machine, but there's also a bar in the area where after 10 minutes of trying to figure out wtf was happening, discovered this is where you place your takeout orders. I'm giving benefit of the doubt because maybe they were short staffed the day I went, but man it was extremely unorganized. The food was mediocre. I had a taco dinner with a side of tortilla chips. The chips come with about 20oz of salsa (LOL). Probably won't return. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal today. The flavor was outstanding. The only issue that I had was that our waitress rarely checked on us and took a little long to bring the bill and to-go containers. The service was bad. When we arrived they gave us 2 waters and it was 4 of us. Then when we finally asked for water they gave us 2 small cups filled about half way if that, with no ice, the water was warm. The waitress had attitude the whole time. After they brought our food ou, she never came to ask if we needed anything whem I needed some lemon n hot sauce. Some of the BEST Mexican food I've ever had in my entire life. Coming from a hispanic family myself, I feel that's saying a lot. I found this place because it was mentioned in another review by another Yelper. I saw the pictures and was convinced to give it a go. The first time I came here, I got the burrito suiza with the rice and beans, chicken nacho appetizer, fonduta (cheese dip) appetizer, and my boyfriend got an asada (steak) burrito. Everything was so damn good. We were so full we damn near needed a wheelchair to get out of the place. We still had enough leftovers for another entire meal. Since then, we've been back 2-3 more times, and it's been fairly consistent. Definitely a go-to place for some of the best mexican food on the south side of Chicago. ps) I also had the enchiladas...they were decent but not all that. The chorizo fonduta is to die for! GO! Since the remodel, it is even more spacious and has a nice, modern feel to it. Solid, tasty, fairly authentic Mexican food. The service is efficient, if not overly friendly, the tortas are good, the Guisado de Lengua is delish, the margaritas are tasty, my friends enjoy the steak tacos and beef enchiladas. The absolute WORST SERVICE ever!!! This place is horrible. My friend and I got here around 10 pm, not many ppl and all the available booths were filthy. Eaten leftover Food and drinks were still on all the open tables. We asked for a seat, the waitress said ok, we're like ahhhhhhhh, can u clean the booth please? She did and it took at least 20m to get someone to take our order. I got the Cancun, I usually get that and my friend got a steak burrito. The steak was SOOOOO salty and without flavor. Only saving grace here are the drinks. All the margaritas frozen and piña colada were delicious, otherwise go somewhere else. This place needs a clean up and lessons in customer service. This review is regarding the rude service, not the food. My husband ordered a fajita tray and the older guy with gray hair that always collects the money behind the counter was extremely rude. We have never had a problem at this establishment and have ordered trays of food in the past, but never the day of our events. If the manager/owner didn't want to accept a large order at the last minute, he could've politely declined due to short notice. Instead, he accepts the order, takes our money and complaines that it will take over 30 mins to prepare. My husband was not in a rush and said ok. Then, the owner/manager had an attitude about adding tortillas to the order. He told my husband that tortillas didn't come with the order and my husband said...ok...well how much would it be to add them on? It literally was $1. This man was just rude for no reason. I told my husband that he should've just cancelled the order and went somewhere else. Rude service doesn't deserve our dollars. It's a shame, because this was one our favorite south side eat in restaurants. I will go else where from now on. However, props to the chefs...because the food was good, as always. The owner/manager just made a graduation celebration a little less enjoyable. We will pray for him. read more

I've been coming to this spot all my life (it seems), well I'm at the end of that. I ordered a chicken burrito but it seems the cook thought I ordered burrito soup. As soon as I cut into it juice was everywhere, wet rice and beans YUCK! But the chicken inside was DRY! How! Needless to say I won't be back anytime soon. 3.5 stars This is our go-to place in the 'hood when celebrating with a group. Their margaritas and pina coladas are pretty good. I usually get a burrito but today I had the carne asada taco dinner (yep, had it for lunch). I definitely have enough leftovers lunch the next day. My friend Mike + I's "Burrito Sunday," search continued, last week, as we drove out to Chicago's southern lakefront towards South Shore's S. Commercial strip. There were few options up the strip, granted it was a Sunday evening. We passed Cocula + it's Chile's exterior a few times but were eventually won over by it's parking lot option + overall slim pickens elsewhere. First couple of thoughts upon entering Cocula: "Did this used to be a Wendy's?" + "It's packed!". A mix of good/bad signs, depending how you look at it. We found a booth + were soon handed our menus (their menus resemble that of a Mexican Denny's) + a basket of chips/salsa. The chips were a lot like Tostidos + the salsa was a standard red w/ a lot of cilantro thrown in perhaps to cover up the store bought flavor. I gave Cocula an extra star due to the fact that they not only had horchata but they had it by the PITCHER. I was sold! Sure, it wasn't the best horchata I've had but the pitcher option was a big selling point in my starved state. While we waited for our order, I noticed a girl no older than 9 eat an entire vat dressed in a goblet of dark red shrimp cocktail. She managed to pick out the tempting slices of avocado + left them to the side. I then looked behind Mike to see the couple seated behind us who I'm assuming had ordered a pitcher of Bloody Mary but it resembled Heinz 57, more so. I had ordered my usual veggie burrito w/ avocado (which they forgot). It arrived with a side of pasty beans + rice, which had three kernals of corn + two green peas. I was hungry so overlooked the redundancy of the rice/bean mix. The burrito was ok, no flavors really jumped out at me. Mike had ordered a steak burrito + was pleased with it's medium/well-done texture. I could have gone with more spice, something more memorable but my burrito definitely left me feeling full + I had to pass on the last cupful of horchata left in the pitcher. All that said, the staff was rather nice + the price was resonable. I'm sort of bored with writing this review ...Sort of like my Cocula experience. read more

Cold winter afternoon , so it's time for a steaming bowl of Mexican chicken soup (caldo de pollo). La Cocula's caldo was almost as good as mine Very light chicken broth garnished with a chicken thigh and leg, boiled potato ,carrots. chayote, & zucchini . Some of the food they serve is good but they are pricey. Make sure you grab all your belongings because if you leave anything there and you don't speak Spanish you will have trouble getting it back. I went there with a coworker on lunch break. Took too long to place an order, a while for the meal and even longer for the check. Before we knew I was running to get back to work. In that rush I left my keys. I called the store to check and the man who answered the phone was so rude!!! Told me we don't look for lost things. I went up there had to talk to a couple of servers until the server I had earlier gave me my keys. That old ass man shouldn't be answering phones. Just absolutely rude af and this wasn't the first time. I ordered fish tacos a months before this and he argued me down saying I said pork. I walked out. YUM! I was in the area for a meeting with a local non-profit and we decided to stop here for lunch - what a delicious surprise! I'm always looking for great Mexican food in the city...and it's hard to find. Cocula had a casual atmosphere and the waitress was super friendly. I think I got the Guadalajara combo...crispy taco, enchilada and chalupa with rice and beans...way too much food, but I wanted to try a little bit of everything. It didn't disappoint! This restaurant is a good place to go if you want authentic Mexican cuisine. The service is okay at best, definitely not the greatest. They come when they feel like it but when they do they are pleasant. I try to look past it because I know some days they are extremely overworked. They have really good torta as and the prices are fairly low for the portions. The food isn't bland but it also isn't salty and that is hard to find. The drinks are okay at best they're not strong at all so you pay 8$ for s smoothie and milkshake basically. The one thing I did so strange is that they don't serve horchata or tres leche.
