My friend and I decided to try Taqueria Varitas, I have to say it was very pleasant. I got the vibe of family owned and very passionate about the quality of the food. I got the Torta dinner and I will say it was very tasty. I like the salsas that we got the creamy jalapeño one was fire! The service was also very nice as it seemed lots of regular customers come! I will say check out a local food spot that is on my list of places that I enjoy!

Taco Dinner With The Soy Steak, Tofu And Vegetable
Steve A.

Came recently for lunch at this unexpectedly good taqueria in Kenwood. It's in a little strip mall in a not great looking area but is convenient to the 47th Street bus line. Taqueria Veritas has a Mexican menu including of course tacos. Basically these are what's recommended, but there's certainly other stuff one can get. You can also find many incredible vegetarian protein options if not wanting beef, pork, or any meats. A hard to find place if you've never been here before. It's away from the street a bit in a plaza. The inside is very small, and you order at the counter and can sit at the couple of tables or by the window. Most people seem to get carryout. The first time here I ate inside. I got the Taco Dinner. It's about $12 for 3 tacos. There's a protein choice including one for vegans. Also this comes with a side, and I got rice and beans. The vegan protein choices were soy steak, tofu, and vegetables. I got one of each. The soy steak was actually tofu but it was firm and seasoned like steak. The tofu one was softer and had a fluffy texture. Good place to pop into at lunch. It doesn't have much room inside so don't bring a lot of people though. The menu has mostly tacos but there's many kinds of these including good choices for vegans and vegetarians.

Best place to get tacos! Always get the steak taco dinner and they also have churros. They do have a sitting area.

I had taken a few bites when I decided to add a picture. The second quesabirria is intact. I moved it aside to show the "vegetables".

I have always been very pleased with the quality of the food and vegetarian options at this spot. However, the day before yesterday I decided to try something new. I placed an order on the phone. The veggie Quesabirria dinner is $19.50. I asked the owner if she likes it. She said it tastes good, but it is too much cheese for her. When I looked at my order out in the car, I saw it contained two quesabirria and clear broth. Looked good, but a bit heavy (as she had said). My plate did not have rice and beans, I discovered. When I asked about this, the owner said that they serve them with the vegetables (chopped onion and cilantro), and had decided that that is the whole dinner. No problem, I'll just order a side of rice and beans. She would not sell me rice and beans for $3. which is the add-on price to turn 2-4 tacos into a dinner. Instead, she insisted that if I wanted rice and beans, I had to buy little 4oz container of each for a total of $8. Really?! I suggested they fill one container half rice/half beans. She mumbled something about "This is how we do it, with the containers and everything." Huh?! So, I can buy two $5.25 tacos and you will give me rice and beans for $3 (Total $13.50). But I buy tacos baked with extra cheese and deep fried for $19.50 and you can't sell me rice and beans for less than $8.00 ??? Make it make sense. When I let her know that I drive from Woodlawn because I really like their food, but felt that it is unfair to charge me $27.50. plus tax for two specialty tacos with rice and beans. When I told her I drive past a couple of places-- she arrogantly gloated, "My food is better than their's." Yeah, I just told YOU that. But something is wrong with your heart. So, no thanks! I'll go places where my food is served with love and respect for me and the rest of my community. This is Chicago! I discovered that by jumping on the e-way, I can get to spots that actually win awards, faster than I get to you. So, thanks!

Great tacos, but pricey. The food is worth it. The workers are friendly and the environment is fast-paced.

I usually order a steak burrito from Varitas but today I felt like trying something different. I decided on a torta de milanesa and do I regret it. The meat is so dry it's like biting into breaded and fried beef jerky. Perhaps with a different protein this would be a good option. The bread was good, it's served on a bolillo not a telera. They do add sour cream, cheese, avocado, a tiny bit of shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and onions, and refried beans. It seemed expensive but maybe because I didn't enjoy it, the dinner was $13.75 plus $3.00 for a small horchata. Overall, I would still highly recommend this restaurant just don't order the milanesa.

Overall great service and super fast, ordered for pickup. I tried the torta de Milanesa de res fully loaded with everything. The torta had tomato's, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, avocado, and it was great. The salsas that came with the torta where delicious nice and spicy. Will definitely give them a try for next time.

The aguachiles were easily our favorite -- super fresh and full of flavor, with really well-balanced ingredients. You can tell the food is made to order and not rushed. The chips and salsa were also way better than your typical starter. The chips came out warm and crisp, and the salsa was smooth, flavorful, and super addictive. We also tried a few drinks, and they were excellent -- well-made, not overly sweet, and a great way to start the night before heading to the game. Our server was amazing -- friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. They kept checking in at all the right times and made the whole experience relaxed and enjoyable even with the pre-game crowd. Definitely a great spot to hit anytime you're in the area looking for solid Mexican food and a fun vibe.

Starting with margaritas (because obviously ‍), queso and chips that were dangerously good, and the chicken empanadas that came out perfectly crispy with so much flavor. We kept looking at each other after every bite like "okay wait... THIS is the best thing here" and then another plate would arrive and prove us wrong again The carnitas fried rice??? I genuinely cannot stop thinking about it. So savory, flavorful, comforting, and packed with crispy carnitas on top with the eggs and pickled onions... literally unreal. And then the skirt steak tacos absolutely stole the show. The steak was cooked perfectly, packed with flavor, and paired so perfectly with all the toppings and sauces. Every single bite tasted fresh and homemade in the best way possible. And can we talk about the ambience for a second because WOW. The music, the energy, the vibe inside, everyone celebrating, the drinks flowing -- it felt like the perfect Cinco de Mayo dinner spot. The service was also AMAZING from start to finish and made the entire experience even better. One of those dinners where you leave already talking about when you're coming back If you're looking for the place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, date night, tacos & margaritas, or honestly just an incredible dinner in general... this is IT

Delicious food, friendly waiter, militant hostess…read more We came to dinner before a standup performance downtown (Mateo Lane was hilarious, by the way). I arrived at the restaurant on time (4:30) and checked in with the hostess, who said I could only be seated when the entire group of three arrived. This seemed weird given the restaurant was pretty empty at this time, and ordinarily I'd order a drink while waiting at the table. Regardless, I went to Starbucks instead because I knew the other two were a few minutes behind. When I got back to the restaurant, my friend said the hostess told him we absolutely had to leave within 1.5 hours because we were late... which seemed odd because he may have checked in 15 minutes after our reservation, to an empty restaurant, that already refused to seat me on time. Regardless, the food was delicious. I had the Pollo in ChiChilo-- the mole was delicious, and I loved the chicken and sweet potato. I ordered the mole on the side, which seemed like a nice balance. Since the hostess wouldn't previously seat me, I had a lovely iced matcha latte with oat milk and half a pump of vanilla from Starbucks, which was a nice pairing. The waiter did ask if I wanted a shot of something with it, which seemed odd. Ambiance was cute, probably due for a renovation but seemed appropriate for most dining out occasions- dates, families, a day out in town. Note: the restaurant charges an automatic 20% gratuity which may explain the service. Keep this in mind to avoid tipping more than you intend. Overall, I would definitely come back, and the food and wait staff made up for the abrasive welcome.
