Nothing excites me more than a perfectly executed steak chimichanga. The ratio of the crunch of the flour tortilla to the perfectly tender steak bites and all the tasty accoutrements, makes my taste bud sing hallelujah! My go-to chimichanga joint is Taqueria Los Comales on 18th street, but one day I did a chimichanga search from my Hyde Park domain and found TV. I passed this establishment many times but never ventured inside. I was so excited to have found chimichangas close-by, I ordered right away and rushed over to grab my order. It was ready as soon as I walked in and when I got home and ripped open my package, I bit down into chimichanga excellence! Crunchy tortilla, perfectly seasoned, steak and the amazing freshness of the salsa verde were music to my palate. The accompanying rice and beans made the meal complete, with enough leftover for lunch the next day. All under $20. I've been back twice already! read more

Classic Mexican food in a very welcoming and surprising place in Bronzeville. The owner and staff made me feel welcome and appreciated coming to their restaurant. Came recently for lunch at this unexpectedly good taqueria in Kenwood. It's in a little strip mall in a not great looking area but is convenient to the 47th Street bus line. Taqueria Veritas has a Mexican menu including of course tacos. Basically these are what's recommended, but there's certainly other stuff one can get. You can also find many incredible vegetarian protein options if not wanting beef, pork, or any meats. A hard to find place if you've never been here before. It's away from the street a bit in a plaza. The inside is very small, and you order at the counter and can sit at the couple of tables or by the window. Most people seem to get carryout. The first time here I ate inside. I got the Taco Dinner. It's about $12 for 3 tacos. There's a protein choice including one for vegans. Also this comes with a side, and I got rice and beans. The vegan protein choices were soy steak, tofu, and vegetables. I got one of each. The soy steak was actually tofu but it was firm and seasoned like steak. The tofu one was softer and had a fluffy texture. Good place to pop into at lunch. It doesn't have much room inside so don't bring a lot of people though. The menu has mostly tacos but there's many kinds of these including good choices for vegans and vegetarians. read more

Better quality meat. The flavor of the tacos was good, but the quality of meat was subpar.

Best place to get tacos! Always get the steak taco dinner and they also have churros. They do have a sitting area. read more

I have always been very pleased with the quality of the food and vegetarian options at this spot. However, the day before yesterday I decided to try something new. I placed an order on the phone. The veggie Quesabirria dinner is $19.50. I asked the owner if she likes it. She said it tastes good, but it is too much cheese for her. When I looked at my order out in the car, I saw it contained two quesabirria and clear broth. Looked good, but a bit heavy (as she had said). My plate did not have rice and beans, I discovered. When I asked about this, the owner said that they serve them with the vegetables (chopped onion and cilantro), and had decided that that is the whole dinner. No problem, I'll just order a side of rice and beans. She would not sell me rice and beans for $3. which is the add-on price to turn 2-4 tacos into a dinner. Instead, she insisted that if I wanted rice and beans, I had to buy little 4oz container of each for a total of $8. Really?! I suggested they fill one container half rice/half beans. She mumbled something about "This is how we do it, with the containers and everything." Huh?! So, I can buy two $5.25 tacos and you will give me rice and beans for $3 (Total $13.50). But I buy tacos baked with extra cheese and deep fried for $19.50 and you can't sell me rice and beans for less than $8.00 ??? Make it make sense. When I let her know that I drive from Woodlawn because I really like their food, but felt that it is unfair to charge me $27.50. plus tax for two specialty tacos with rice and beans. When I told her I drive past a couple of places-- she arrogantly gloated, "My food is better than their's." Yeah, I just told YOU that. But something is wrong with your heart. So, no thanks! I'll go places where my food is served with love and respect for me and the rest of my community. This is Chicago! I discovered that by jumping on the e-way, I can get to spots that actually win awards, faster than I get to you. So, thanks! read more

Taqueria Varitas - I had taken a few bites when I decided to add a picture. The second quesabirria is intact. I moved it aside to show the "vegetables". - Mexican Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Today, I was pretty let down by the dinner I got from Taqueria Varitas. The steak taco just didn't hit the mark; it really needed more seasoning to bring out its flavor. Plus, there was barely any cilantro and onion, which are usually key for that fresh and zesty kick. The rice on the side was just as disappointing, tasting quite bland and not really adding anything to the meal like I was expecting. read more

I usually order a steak burrito from Varitas but today I felt like trying something different. I decided on a torta de milanesa and do I regret it. The meat is so dry it's like biting into breaded and fried beef jerky. Perhaps with a different protein this would be a good option. The bread was good, it's served on a bolillo not a telera. They do add sour cream, cheese, avocado, a tiny bit of shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and onions, and refried beans. It seemed expensive but maybe because I didn't enjoy it, the dinner was $13.75 plus $3.00 for a small horchata. Overall, I would still highly recommend this restaurant just don't order the milanesa. read more

Glad we tried out this Mexican restaurant on our way back home from Chicago. I would call the food elevated Mexican standards. Very good. The service was also friendly and responsive. The atmosphere is better inside than the strip retail location would suggest. I'd love to try the dessert/baked goods on display next time. read more

Called in a quick lunch order for three corn tacos (2 chicken and one chile relleno), a chicken burrito and an order of chips and pico. the woman taking the order was very polite, repeated my order to me and told to come by in 20 mins. Tab was about $30. They have a small dining area if you want to eat there, but I took my order to go. Food was ready as promised and was above average in quality/taste. I will definitely order again to try other menu items. read more

This place is a five star dive in for me. Awesome food! Awesome people. Awesome prices. I had the chorizo burrito and I tried the chicken burrito. Everything! Phenomenal food and service! I love this place and love everything about it,

Finally there's a decent option for Mexican food in the area. Taqueria Varitas isn't the best Mexican food I've eaten but it's decent and better than anything you'll find in the immediate vicinity. I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and was able to walk right up to the counter. There were a couple of people waiting for their food but other than that it wasn't busy. The young lady greeted me and said she'd be with me shortly. The restaurant space is small but it's clean and inviting so eating in would be an acceptable option. There's a large TV on the wall that was playing some program in Spanish. The young lady rung up the orders and there was at least one cook in the back. I opted for the taco dinner which came with three tacos, rice and beans. I got one beef taco and two steak tacos. The tacos are served traditionally (cilantro and onions) or with lettuce, tomato and cheese. I opted for the latter. They give you a ample portion size of meat which was nice. The tacos were flavorful topped with fresh ingredients. The rice was okay but I wouldn't say it was exactly memorable. And the refried beans were runny and lacked flavor. The beans were the worst part of the meal. So much so that if I ever returned, I'd simply order tacos and a side of rice. It's a plus that they actually serve Mexican Coke too. The prices are average for Mexican food. I paid $9 for the taco dinner and nearly $14 including the Coke and tax. Overall, I was pleased with my first experience. Short of actually driving to Pilsen, this place is probably your best option in Bronzeville, Hyde Park, South Shore and Kenwood. read more

The food was okay. The shrimp was deveined but lack seasoning. I didn't care for the green peppers in the cole slaw they put on the shrimp taco. The steak needed more seasoning as well. I do not have to ever go back read more

Tacos !!! Craving tacos and took a venture to the south side , and this place did not disappoint !! It is right after the Walmart in a super small shopping center with funky parking but to the food . The tacos are really good !! They have jerk tacos too and regular tacos with pico or chipotle slaw . It's a simple place but the food is good and the customer service is awesome !! the women who works there is so nice . The fish tacos I got were - jerk and grilled and they were so good !!! I also got chicken and they didn't disappoint ! They taste fresh and reminded me of street tacos you get in mexico but these a little bigger than the street tacos . they also have horchata and pina !!! but their machine was down when I went . read more

FINALLY a legit mexican joint in the hyde park / bronzeville / kenwood area!!! no need to drive all the way to pilsen or back of the yards anymore for my taco fix. four stars for high quality food; the elusive fifth star for serving tempura battered fish tacos with some really good slaw (you actually have a choice of fried or grilled fish). i ordered a sampler to get the lay of the land: one asada, one pastor, and one fish. all quite yummy and the kitchen did not skimp on portions, either. tucked away in an inconspicuous mini-strip, no signage on the joint itself, but there is one along with the other businesses at the corner of the strip. inside, a few small tables, nothing too fancy, but neat and clean enough to sit down and eat three good tacos. go there and give this place your business so it can stay open and FINALLY feed us south-east siders some legit mexican food. read more

Well to start, the seller knows me by name, lol Dani and after reading some reviews that claim that are disrespectful, I'll suggest to not used a term especially in the neighborhood that they are in. Had the carne asada burrito but the price is way too expensive for the size of the burrito

Deciding to change my review based off my husbands experience here. Also, I initially gave this establishment a great review but just said I wasn't a fan of the chicken tacos. When I returned, the owner decided to confront me and ask me why I wrote the review and what was my reasoning behind not liking the chicken tacos because that's the first she'd heard of that. I found that to be unprofessional. This was one of our favorite Mexican spots. However, after feeling disrespected by the owner when we were their first YELP review is the reason why I've decided to update my stars. read more

This place was our saving grace after spending a few hours at the Museum of Science + Industry! My family and I drove past 53rd street since parking was unavailable and we were starving. Thanks to Yelp and GPS, we found Taqueria Varitas in Bronzeville. We ordered two tortas - one with chicken milanesa and another with steak. The bolillo bread was amazingly crisp on the outside and the breaded meats were cooked perfectly. My 5yo son is a picky eater who's not a fan of corn tortilla so I was happy to hear they serve tacos on flour tortillas upon request. We added a cup of corn with all the goods - butter, mayo, cotija cheese, Valentina sauce. Horchata was good too. This place is far from home but we'll consider a return the next time we're on the south side. Legit Mexican food indeed! read more

The food here is amazing and the staff is always welcoming. I only wish they were open on weekends.

I've seen this place a few times over the last year or so and finally decided to try it today. Parking was a little rough.. I had to park at the opposite end of the block because the small lot was filled to capacity. Happily I can say that was my only gripe. The food was good (I ordered 7 steak tacos ... not all for me!!) I added cheese and the total came to just over $31. A wee bit pricey, but not out of line for the area (they are in very close proximity to Hyde Park) Food took about 15 minutes, (again not bad) The cashier a younger lady was very friendly & the older lady perhaps the mom thanked me on my way out. I will definitely return. read more

Finally made it out to Taqueria Varitas, and I was not disappointed. I had the tofu al pastor, and Chile relleno tacos which were both excellent! They have great tacos including terrific vegetarian (Al pastor tofu) tacos. Highly recommended!
