We hired Coconut Contracting based on a referral from a friend who lives in McCormick Ranch. We were looking to completely redo the landscaping on a townhome we purchased in Scottsdale that had very basic landscaping. This is our second home today and will be our retirement home in a few years, so getting it right mattered. We had already started plans with another designer, but that relationship did not work out--the designer simply didn't "get" us. Rob was different from the very beginning. He listened carefully to everything we wanted and immediately understood our priorities. When I explained that we had a small yard and wanted to make use of every inch, he fully embraced that challenge. Our vision included an outdoor kitchen with both a gas grill and a Kamado grill, a fountain, a beehive fireplace, pavers covering roughly 80% of the yard, and a cactus-forward desert aesthetic. We were also considering a pergola and a covered extension. We started the planning process months in advance, and Rob was patient throughout. We went through multiple design iterations as we refined and dialed in the plan, and he never rushed the process. His large-scale, highly detailed drawings were extremely professional and gave us confidence before construction ever began. We were out of state at our primary residence for roughly the first 75% of the project. I had cameras installed at the front of the property and could watch some of the early progress remotely. About halfway through the project, I came out to select the granite for the outdoor kitchen, and with help from Rob's crew chief, I installed cameras in the backyard as well. That allowed me to watch the final stages--planting, fireplace construction, and finishing work--from out of state. Rob's crew is exceptional. They work like a tight-knit family. They are detail-oriented and do not cut corners. I watched hours of them working. They actively consult with each other, debate angles and placement, and redo work when something doesn't come out exactly right. They are extremely competent, and when rework is required, they take it on without hesitation or attitude. The yard was beautifully graded, the patio layout is graceful and well balanced, and the team followed the plans precisely--including plant placement, rock selection, and berm design. I rarely encounter workers whose standards match my own, but this crew is focused, disciplined, and holds itself to a very high bar. We are extremely pleased with the final outcome and would confidently recommend Coconut Contracting to anyone looking to create a high-quality, thoughtfully designed outdoor living space. read more

We use Coconut Contracting for our landscape maintenance and could not be more pleased. Rob Gruber runs his business in a very fair and organized fashion. There's a set schedule/pricing for monthly maintenance and additional fees for quarterly checks and other items as needed. The crew comes at a set time, do a thorough job, and Rob can easily be reached by text or email if needed. And I like that we can pay online and have it auto-deducted. Yesterday, Rob the owner of Coconut Contracting wrote a 1 star review on our business page. Not sure what our company has to do with the immature way Rob is handling our dispute with his invoicing and double taxation! We were going to let a competent court having jurisdiction over the matter settle this but since Rob prefers to go this route...so be it. My photos show the poor workmanship of the turf Rob installed. After the project was complete Rob tried to "slip" in additional line items to cover his cost of having another company come out to fix his shoddy work. When I pointed this out to Rob he turned into a child having a temper tantrum. My biggest issue with Rob is being charged tax on labor. Everyone knows labor is not taxed in Arizona. As a business owner Rob should know that! My guess is Rob now owes everyone he ever did a job for a refund of the taxes he overcharged them. I find it odd that Coconut Contracting and his wife's "so called" law firm have the same address. Just like the other reviews, beware of going into business with Rob as he has free, unlimited legal aide and will stop at nothing if he doesn't get his way. Rob is very good at twisting the truth regarding actual events or what really happened during our project. It's almost like he can twist it enough and then it's reality. For the record, I don't write in "pseudonym" as you suggest. This is me. This is my yelp account and review. There are obviously other people that are unhappy with Robs work and the unethical way he does business. When we first met Rob he was so paranoid over the 1 star review from Cathy that he cleverly justified it to us. Looking back I should have seen the signs. Rob is what is known as an offender. And just like Cathy's 1 star review, Rob is now arguing with me because in Robs mind he is always right. He is never wrong and nothing is ever his fault. Rob is the most unprofessional business person to deal with. His response to my review just shows how he will continue to argue and justify why he is right and I am wrong. In the beginning....Rob listened, assessed our existing landscape/yard, listened again to our dreams/desires/budget....and he delivered a well-balanced project plan & landscape vision. Our project plan was a thorough overhaul of our small property: we moved walls, created patio space front/back, gardening space, included a large grass yard for kids, plus decorative landscape, with appropriate lighting highlights to show off the hard work. We recently hired Coconut Contracting for a complete backyard remodel of our house in North Scottsdale. I cannot say enough nice things about Rob and his crew. Not only do they do impeccable work but Rob's design ideas were very helpful. A few things I'd like to point out: * Rob was there every morning to answer questions and get his crew started for the day * Once they started the job, they were there every work day until the job was finished (sometimes even Saturdays). They don't take on multiple projects and focus solely on one job at a time * His final pricing came in exactly what he quoted in the original budget * They were able to make tweaks in the design as the project started taking shape * His crew are all very skilled workers that clearly have many years of experience * The crew also cleaned up all materials and tools every single day before leaving for the day * They completed the project in the time they originally promised. After speaking with friends/neighbors who have had backyard remodels completed this is clearly a rarity in the industry. We heard horror stories of contractors taking 7 or 8 months to complete a job that should take 2 months * He gave us updated drawings whenever we decided to make changes in design * His guys have come out multiple times to add additional lights and landscaping that we requested after the job was completed * Pricing was very fair when comparing to other bids we received Rob is also easy to get in touch with and responds to emails/texts/calls in a very timely fashion. We have used Coconut Contracting for two jobs now and both exceeded our expectations. Last year removed a horrible stucco planter that ran the entire length behind our pool and replaced with an elevated flagstone deck (with umbrella holes, totally his idea!), a long bench for additional seating facing the pool and a small water feature made of real boulders that perfectly suits our small yard. This year we added stacked stone to the bench and on our pool pump wall - totally kicked it up a notch!! 1. Showed up on time for every appointment, or called to communicate the need to change. 2. We had a fairly major back yard remodel with expansion of an existing patio with new travertine along with significant redoing of the landscaping. We had the existing grass removed and a desert landscape installed including boulders, a path, cacti, various flowering plants and grasses along with new irrigation and lighting. Rob came up with a great design and worked with us to make it affordable. Rob was terrific to work with, perhaps only exceeded by his crew. They were attentive, easy to work with an amenable changes and always left the site as clean as practical. I had a small but tricky project - redoing a completely enclosed patio. I wasn't getting anywhere with a couple of random contractors, so Rob and Coconut were recommended to me by a friend. Rob was enthusiastic and had good ideas from the start. When the work got started everything went well except for some bad weather. The guys were friendly and hard-working and even worked on Saturday to make up for the time lost to the rain during the week. The patio now looks even better than I expected. We were looking for someone to replace a dated and faltering railroad tie retaining wall in our back yard. We searched around a bit and then met with Rob. I wish I could give more than 5 stars because Rob at Coconut Contracting and his crew are amazing at what they do! I found Rob while doing a Yelp search for a landscaper and he got back in touch with me within a couple of hours. We discussed the project a bit and setup a time for Rob to come out for an estimate. Rob arrived early the day we scheduled our visit and he confirmed the appointment the day before (major bonus points for both these)! We discussed what ideas I had and he also had some ideas. He listened to what I wanted to do and I welcomed any suggestions. Rob measured and took pictures of the backyard so he could have everything he needed for the design. Within a few days Rob had the initial design ready to look over and we made some modifications. We met one more time to go over the final design and schedule when the work would begin. I couldn't believe how quickly things got started and Rob was always keeping me in the loop of anything that came up, always asking before any changes were made. His crew arrived early and worked until they finished their tasks that day. Rob would always follow-up during the day to ensure that I was satisfied with how things were progressing. They always cleaned up before they left for the day and didn't leave anything undone. Rob is extremely involved the entire process and will follow-up after the job is complete to make sure you are satisfied and things are going well. Rob and his entire crew go above and beyond in what they do and strive for perfection. Rob is always available to answer questions and help with any suggestions you have along the way. He will also help to educate you and provides details on how to care for the newly designed and beautiful landscape. BUYER BEWARE. This exactly what you are getting with Rob. Arguments and fighting--- it is everyone else's fault but his. To be clear we were unhappy with the quality and lack of completion of the work that ONLY Rob was hired to do--No one else. We told him we wanted the problems addressed and his wife threatened us with a lawsuit. We then filed a complaint with the ROC that holds his license. An independent inspector came out and agreed that Rob did not fulfill his contract obligations, performed work outside the scope of his license, and did not provide quality work. The ROC directed him to address the issues, which he refused to do. It then went to a judge who ruled on it and found him in default. They suspended his license as a result. This is not an issue with "some customers are never satisfied" but a very poor contractor who hides behind his lawyer wife and will not stand up to his obligations. Stay a country mile away from this company, it is just a matter of time before it happens to you. By the way, he now laughs that we have to sue him in a civil court to get any money to address the repair work we had to do because of his poor quality work. And this is after his license was suspended for violations on our job which, of course, he still denies responsibility for. Good riddance!!!! read more

Rob and crew are absolutely terrific. I'm so grateful for the transformation of my exterior space. You might think about making a landscape update for a host of practical reasons, but I needed to do this major renewal after a life-changing personal event. And it worked. From planning and design through execution, Rob guided me through the process of redesigning both my front and back yard. We kept it reasonably simple as I had a limited budget for a lot of space, but within those constraints, he worked magic. The plants selected are beautiful, and the design is balanced and creates a feeling of spaciousness combined with comfort and softening of the hard landscape that was initially there. The before and after pics of my property are nearly unbelievable (yes, it was pretty awful "before"). Rob made everything easy. Agreed dates were kept, the work unfolded just as planned, crew was friendly, thorough, and responsible, communication was clear and regular, and the project was executed just as we'd planned regarding budget. I've already recommended him to a friend and will continue to do so to others! Rob guarantees the plantings, and we have a few that didn't make the transplant successfully into my horrible dirt, so those will be replaced soon under warranty.
