And it all started way back when being sold from a bicycle that was converted to dispense coffee! My spouse had an Americano and I had the Amalgamation cold brew tea when I saw someone walk by with it. He said it was very tart, but I thought I'd try it anyway. It's Very Heavy on the hibiscus tea, which is all I could taste, in spite of lemongrass, peppermint, orange peel, and cacaco nibs being in it too. I had some honey added, but that wasn't enough to temper the tartness so added some sugar, which only had a little effect. It wasn't until I added some half and half that it became better. That's my taste buds. Anyone else's may be different, but with or without the cream, it's a very pretty drink. We brought the cinnamon roll home to have later, but it smells divine. got this Al Mokha latte which had 70% single origin housemade chocolate sauce and cinnamon. it wasn't on the sweet side so I didn't have to adjust for sugar! I loved it!! the latte art was beautiful too. Here, I tried the Windfall latte hot (has chocolate hazelnut syrup and garnished with Malabar black pepper); it was tasty, not too sweet but I do wish I got a little more of the pepper. However, this is where my rating goes down because eating the churro waffle was quite unpleasant. It was not at all crispy (so floppy that I couldn't really even take it out the bag) and had WAY too much cinnamon powder on it and not enough sugar; it was warm though. Not sure if this was just a one-off experience or what, but definitely a bit of a bummer bc the concept is enticing. Service and ambiance are great; definitely on the smaller side compared to the Chapel Hill Rd location, but comparable to the W Geer St location. There is a small parking lot as well as free street parking. 7/10 for everything but 0/10 for the waffle haha. read more

We stopped in for a quick drink before starting our day. I got a chai latte and a chocolate chip and almond butter oat bowl. The chai latte tasted a bit watered down, I wish it had a stronger chai flavor. The oat ball was cold, almost frozen, when I got it so I had to wait quite a while to eat it. The inside of this shop was cute, though the indoor seating wasn't comfortable, it was just wooden benches. They did have outdoor seating as well. When they moved in here a few years back, they spent a lot of time and thought on the interior design. While the pandemic forced some changes, CC has a huge community that loves them and pushed to help keep them thriving. I want to like Cocoa Cinnamon so badly - it's right down the street from me, they make a big deal out of sourcing and free trade, and their specialty items sound delectable. But unfortunately their specialty items never ARE delectable (will elucidate below), I've never NOT been given some kind of attitude by the baristas, and their approach toward tipping is confusing, and, honestly, entitled. They have a Venmo link just for tips on their website... not even tied to a service. Then they have another separate link for their customers to contribute to 'support our livable wages'... when their coffee is priced higher than almost anywhere else in town already. Then, of course, there's the normal tip ask when completing an order. I feel like I've just weaved my way through a group of people holding out paper cups full of coins when I finally press the 'checkout' button. Oh, and also, they require you to enter your phone number and then enter a verification code merely for the honor of looking at their menu on their website. The coffee/food, though: let's talk about the reason we're here. They source their food from Ninth Street Bakery, which means good pastries for sure, but they're often out of stock of 80% of it after two hours of being open. I often find their coffee to be bitter, but I'm not a coffee connoisseur and won't pretend to be (for what it's worth, I'm a Whisk & Rye fan). I mostly get specialty lattes, and have tried and been disappointed by the Al Mokha and the Dr. Durham, both of which have exciting sounding ingredients (dark chocolate sauce and Sri Lankan cinnamon! Vanilla bean syrup mixed with maca and ginger and topped with black lava salt!) but in the end, just taste like chocolate milk and salty milk, respectively. I can't give one star to a place that's actively trying to be a good, ethical business, but I also just can't keep trying to like them anymore. read more

pros: This place is kind of cute inside, and the baristas were nice. cons: this place charged me $8 for an iced coffee with regular milk, didn't give the extra shot I asked for. the pumpkin bar was cold sludge, I think they just dumped a can of pumpkin puree on some oatmeal and called it a day. I think they genuinely forgot to bake it??? the croissant was violently stale, it looked sufficient but there was not a single flake to be had. we got 2 hot coffee drinks, they were supposed to be flavored but they tasted the exact same. they also added the wrong kind of milk. they only added an extra shot of espresso to one of the drinks, when we asked for it in both. the levels of liquid in the two hot drinks were wildly different. don't know how that was allowed. it was incredibly obvious. please don't spend your money here. read more

They've tripped their menu from the original location and have not only initial beta hours, but an initial beta menu with three tea lattes, two signature lattes, a handful of pour-over options and of course your standard mocha, latte, espresso, etc. It's day two of them being open and the place is slamming! Much bigger than their original location off Gear Street with an industrial/Moroccan/modern-day feel. You're invited to sit on a wooden bench with personal mini-stool/table, two seater tables or the community "office" space. Exposed brick, large garage windows and of course the beautiful patio space running parallel to Hillsborough Road are all very inviting. And let's not forget about the baristas, quick to let you know what's going on and friendly! You have easy access to 2 hour street parking or the 15 minute parking provided by Cocoa Cinnamon around the back. I tried one of two personalized lattes currently served: the La Frida (8oz for $3.85+tax), a sweet and spicy mole inspired drink with rose petals sprinkled on top. Although I asked for it on the less-sweet side, it was still quite sweet upon first sip, but let it linger and you'll get that spicy bite in the back. I love the feel and I'm excited to see them expand their drink menu. They're also serving up bakery items (including products by 9th St. Bakery). Tip: Wifi password is currently: "ESPRESSO!" Very busy when I arrived (about 15 people in front of me in line around 11:15am on a Sunday). Staff was friendly once we got to the counter. Unique speciality drink options available (black lava salt, Carolina reaper pepper, ginger, etc), but they have the standard coffee options as well. I got the Caramelo with extra espresso shots (they gave me two shots for the same up-charge so that tells me they really do make each drink fresh and made to order) - so it was worth the 10ish minute wait to get the coffee after I ordered. Coffee tasted fresh and very delicious. Will definitely recommend to my other coffee drinking friends. Food safety/sanitation notes: no gloves in use, but scoops and utensils used. No hairnets but hair was kept out of the baristas way as they were making the drinks. Overall clean feel inside the establishment. 98.5% on last food inspection. read more

I had heard so much about this place and I don't know how the experience at different locations would vary or if I hit an off day, but I was disappointed. As others have mentioned, parking wasn't easy. There is a small lot with a few spaces behind the store, but the time seemed to be limited to 15 minutes. It would be useful if you wanted to run in and grab a cup of coffee. I found parking down the street without too much trouble, but note that these spots were also limited to 2 hours. It's cute inside. I liked the outside seating and that garage doors opened to the indoor space. However, the seating didn't feel practical to work. There are some small tables, but those were occupied. There is also bench seating. It was uncomfortable, and I wouldn't want to sit with my laptop in my lap for any length of time. There also were limited outlets, so I do not think this is a great place to work. I found a table outside, which was nice. My coffee was fine. I didn't see a menu until I reached the counter and someone was impatiently waiting for my order, so I just ordered an Americano. It was okay but nothing special. I found the drink prices reasonable. Also, customer service was lacking--the workers weren't friendly or helpful. I'm not sure if I'll try another location of Cocoa Cinnamon, but I won't return here. read more

My mom and I are in town searching for an apartment for my March move and thought we'd stop by to pick up coffee and a pastry before starting our day full of tours. We got the chocolate croissant (pictured) and Asiago scone from 9th street bakery, I believe? Anyways, so freaking good. LOVE Cocoa Cinnamon and glad there are now 3 locations! This location has a slight North African/Middle Eastern feel to it -- as you can tell by the table design in the photo. This location is less busy than the one on Geer St, but has about the same amount of seating. It does, however, fill up on the weekends pretty quickly. Also, seating includes a few chairs, and a lot of benches. The drinks are fantastic as always, just like at the original Cocoa Cinnamon. I just love the different ingredients they add here including black salt, paprika, date sugar, rose water, etc. You will definitely find your unique (delicious!!) drink here. From the 3 locations, I would study here if I wanted my choice of drink. If I wanted to for sure find a seat though (and wanted churros and chocolate or was OK with a basic coffee selection), I would go to the location on Chapel Hill Road. read more
