This is an update to my 5/13/2009 review of Coco Thai. After writing the restaurant off many months ago, my friends convinced me to give it another shot. They assured me that the snarky British lady hadn't been sighted in quite some time and that the service had improved. Honestly, there aren't many places to eat in Narberth, and I like Thai food, so I allowed myself to be persuaded into going to Coco Thai one more time.
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised.
The seating and decor is pretty much the same as last time, but it's a little place in downtown Narberth and not in Center City, so it's hard to expect a business like Coco Thai to be able to afford major renovations to make the interior really cool. My fiance and I sat outside for dinner because it was a nice evening, and Narberth was having its annual sidewalk sale, so there was music down the street that we could hear. It was nice, although the outdoor seating is a little awkward - I sat on the metal park bench that's in front of the place, while he sat in a chair opposite me. Our table was about 5 inches from the one next to us (because the park bench seats both sets of tables out front), so we heard much more of the conversation of the ladies next to us than I would have liked. But still, it was a nice evening to sit outside.
Our waitress was a very pleasant young woman who was very punctual with her service. So got our orders right, and the food came out really quickly (unlike last time). I got duck pad thai, and it was so good that I ate it all. My fiance got the Thai basil with tofu, which was also really good. I'm still a little confused by their "spiciness" rating on the menu. Most things have four designations: no stars = no spicy heat; one star = mild; two stars = medium; and three stars = hot. The pad thai had no stars, so it was without spicy heat, as it should have been. The Thai basil, however, has 2 stars on the menu, but it barely had any spicy heat to it at all. There was just a tiniest hint of heat as sort of an aftertaste to that dish. To me, that would have been a 1-star dish. I mean, it was good, but I still think they should try to get their spicy designations more consistent so they don't end up with problems like I had last time (and I've heard my friends saying they've gotten dishes that were either unexpectedly too spicy or not spicy enough because they thought the star-system on the menu was accurate, like most other Thai restaurants).
In all, though, I liked the food. And the best part of the evening was still to come. The chef makes her own ice cream! She personally came out and asked us how our meal was and then asked if we'd like any ice cream. Now, homemade ice cream is hard to pass up. It's even harder to pass up when it's available in unusual flavors. She presented us with several very yummy sounding options. I ended up getting green tea and white chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone, and my fiance got cantaloupe and honeydew ice cream in a waffle cone. Their best is apparently the coconut ice cream, but I don't particularly care for coconut, so that's why I didn't order it. When my ice cream came out, it wasn't all the way set, so it was a bit messy to eat. But I didn't care. It was REALLY good. It was smooth and had little bits of white chocolate in it, which actually gave the green tea a bit of a hint of coconut for some reason. It was delicious. My fiance's was also very good, and his was properly frozen. Plus, the waffle cones are awesome. So if you go, get the ice cream. You can also get the ice cream to go - just go in and order it, and in a minute you'll be strolling down the street in Narberth attracting envious looks from passersby.
In short, I like this place better now. The food is decent, the ice cream fantastic, and the staff and chef very nice. So I'll definitely go there again at some point to make sure that the service stays punctual and pleasant and the food stays good. As long as that British lady doesn't make an appearance again, I think all will be well. read more
