I've been to this restaurant three times in the last year and while the food is good and the plants and lights in the restaurant are pretty, the service is severely lacking. The man who works upstairs and is the "host" is not welcoming at all. My wife and I came to this restaurant on a Tuesday night around 7:15 PM and upon walking upstairs we were swiftly told they were closing at 8:00 PM (which we knew). We immediately felt like we had to rush through our meal. I wasn't a fan of the QR code menu system from our first visit but was thankful for it this night so I did not have to interact with the host. Earlier this week on a Sunday night, knowing we were were coming with 4 adults and 2 children (3 years old and 6 months old), I called ahead at 6:00 PM to make sure we would be able to get seated around 6:30. I was told that would be no problem and there were not many people in the restaurant. When we arrived upstairs, we were told that we could sit, but we wouldn't get food for maybe an hour or so since so may people just walked in. Upon closer observation to the people around, I noticed more than half of them already had their food and there were maybe 5 other parties in total. The host again, was not welcoming, apologetic and didn't care that I had called earlier and gave us no other option than to leave. Once we left, I deiced I would call to place a hypothetical take out order...I was told it would take about 25-30 minutes. I will not go back here, there are other great Thai places in our area. (Order number 2028) last evening my wife, myself and 3 guest visiting from New York dined at your restaurant. The atmosphere was very lively, and your staff was lovely. June was our server, very friendly and attentive. Our issues were the long wait for the food to be served, an hour from placing the order to having it brought to the table.The temperature of the food was not hot except the drunken noodles which came out last. The protein portion was not sufficient and the flavor was just ok. We did not want to complain because of the long wait time in getting it and we were hungry. I don't know if complementary snacks or something to tie you over until the meal comes is given or not but we had only water. Everyone was disappointed with the experience and having a bill for $214.44 was shocking for just dinner. No appetizers, no desserts, just dinner. Lots of scrolling, difficult to read on the off-white on back font, and some in our party lost connectivity. I hate to do it but the experience wasn't great. It started when we first entered and there was nobody around. We stood in the doorway awkwardly for some time wondering whether they were open or not. Eventually, somebody did come by and told us to go upstairs for service. Strange but not a big deal. We were seated immediately and looked over the menu. We placed our order through the phone. We did receive the appetizer and drinks pretty quickly. But our one hour parking expired in the time it took for our entrees to arrive. Luckily, the food was amazing. Everything we ordered was delicious and cooked well. I definitely recommend the food. However, the food was way too expensive. My Massaman curry was about $20, but adds an extra $2 for any protein, plus $4 for brown rice. Look at how much brown rice I got in my pictures. That's how much the entire pack of brown rice costs at the supermarket but I get a little bowl of it. The appetizer was $11 but it was such a small serving too. The food is excellent, made with ingredients that taste fresh. Very warm and charming atmosphere of bamboo and fairy lights. Great place for a date! But just pretty and unique to sit in. The aesthetic lends to the spirit of Thai cuisine. I usually order out more than sit in the restaurant but so far the service has been fine. ADA considerations--Most of their seating is on the second floor and there is no elevator so if you need ADA accommodations, I recommend you call and explicitly explain you need accommodations either with their first floor indoor seating or outdoor seating on the sidewalk. They have a unisex bathroom with a couple of ADA bars on the right side of the commode. The 20% tip. I saw other commenters here mention the now-required 20% tip on the food. I already pay %20 tip at whatever restaurant I go to and have done that for years so I didn't balk at it, though I don't blame others for being upset about that. (I have balked at the 20% tip that is automatically added to your order when you order online from this establishment, but I always adjust the tip to %0 when I order electronically for take-out. I am just not a fan of it being embedded in the cost in a way that's not as transparent or up front as I wish it was.) Since the pandemic, they have charged for things like extra sauce so that may get under some patrons' craw. I always have an amazing time at this place. First of all the restaurant is STUNNING, my pictures cannot do it justice. The plants and fairy lights make it magical in there. You have to see it for yourself. On top of that the staff is SO AMAZING. Very sweet and attentive. Warning the food does take a long time to get ready so be prepared to stay for at least 1.5/2 hours. Reservations are recommended on busy nights (Friday and Saturday) because it is a pretty small restaurant. They do takeout also. The street parking is usually available and free on weekends and at night (I think). Now for the food. We got the pan friend vegetable dumplings and the steamed shrimp dumplings. They were very flavorful. The pad Thai is amazing. With chicken or veggies- both are sooooo good. You get a choice of spicy from 1-6 so they have a level for everyone. I get the 3 medium spicy and it's got a good zing and is very flavorful. We got some drunken noodles to share and it was very saucy and yummy. My friend got the pad se ew and loved it as well. The best Thai food I've had around the area (Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, Wynnewood, etc). We dined in and, while they have some strange things like charging extra for hot sauce, it's overall quite friendly and good service, and definitely tasty food. We really like that they put all the food in paper/cardboard containers instead of plastic, and the pickup was very easy. The staff was super friendly. Since it was a "tip", I refused to pay and that is my right. So I wasted 15 mins of my time arguing with her to remove it. She would not budge and I had to politely but firmly tell her to take it off the bill. She then loudly announced to all customers that I wasn't paying any tip and I was never to come back. WTF? If she wants to enforce customers paying for service, then call it a "service fee" and state that cost clearly on the menu. Or increase her menu costs by 20% and print "tipping is not necessary." It was a sad way to end the evening. My family had a nice meal outside. But we won't be back for quite some time to her restaurant. We have been going to Coco Thai for more than a decade. The food remains fantastic, but now you have to order with a cellphone. This is not a problem for most people, but I do not own a cell phone. It's okay though - my daughter orders for me. The vegetables are always fresh, the food is perfectly seasoned, and the service is prompt. After the pandemic, they started charging extra for everything: a built-in 20% gratuity, a $5 charge for bringing your own wine (my single serving wine usually cost less than that), and a charge for a box to take home your leftovers. Don't misunderstand me - THESE ARE HUGE TURN OFFS!!!! So, it is no surprise that other reviewers have complained about these things and have sworn never to return. I went to coco Thai Bistro for the first time for my friends birthday. The interior is really magical with all the fairy lights and plants hanging from the ceiling and the walls. It definitely was very quiet since it was on a weekday. They even let us bring our own cake and provided utensils for us. As we age, with any luck, our perception of reality is tempered by our years of experience. Every time I think that the world is not going to hell in a handbasket, I am reminded that that may indeed be a possibility. I like to refuse to give it any power. Today's experience while stopping for lunch at a restaurant was a shared terrible experience. I was indeed a solo diner trying out a new place because my Thai food addiction kicked in. The meal experience was a dichotomy for sure. I walked into a beautiful restaurant where plants adorned the side walls and a large portion of the front window. It was at that time that I told myself that this was going to be a great lunch. I asked to be seated and they told me I had to go upstairs even though there were a small handful of tables available downstairs. I said out loud, "well it better be as beautiful upstairs as it is downstairs", and it was! This is where the experience goes south. I asked what appeared to be a host to be seated and he sent me to a deuce in the middle of this restaurant, instructing me to get out my phone and take a picture of the QR code on the table. I'm quite familiar with this scenario having eaten at a bunch of restaurants, independents and chains alike. For instance, Nando Peri Peri in Annapolis has an ordering system that uses your phone and it seems quite efficient. This experience was anything but. Upon opening the app, there was a page full of tiles with all kinds of information including: Extra charges for all kinds of things, like a corking fee and a takeout container A mandatory 20% gratuity added to every check. The webpage that I was directed to for the purpose of ordering food immediately tried to get me to download the app. A clunky restaurant app for sure. I'm not a big fan of data mining and I was hungry so I skipped all that, and ordered a meal. Everything was up charged and every little addition was an extra fee. The 20% gratuity would lead one to think that it was for service, but there was zero service at this establishment. If the food was bonkers out of this world good that would be one thing, but how can you make Tom Kha Gai with no Galanga? A soup and an entrée and a Thai iced coffee along with the gratuity came out to be a $50 check. For lunch. For one. The couple at the table next to me was having issues as well. I really didn't feel like stuffing my face with a big bowl of noodles and duck. I asked if I could get a takeout container and the host/useless waiter told me that there would be a charge for a takeout container. I told him that he could either give me one for free or he could throw the remainder of my meal out. I am wondering what kind of abuse the owner of this restaurant suffered during her entire life span, or just last week - that would tell them that this business model was going to help their restaurant thrive. I am sure there are many people who are hungry who go to this place and never return. When I told the woman who owned the joint that I thought her protocol for serving people food was the strangest thing I've ever encountered and told her that a 20% gratuity for no service is unconscionable, she asked me what protocol and unconscionable meant. I had dinner at Coco Thai Bistro a handful of times before their renovation and it used to be my favorite restaurant. It has a quaint atmosphere, and delicious food, and the service used to be decent. This past weekend, I finally found myself back in this little establishment and was shocked to find that the service has been completely eradicated. One of my favorite parts about going out to eat is chit-chatting with my server and I think being waited on makes paying for a meal in a restaurant worth the price. That being said, it was an outstanding disappointment to have to order my meal through my phone and not be served by anyone. They also refused to take any responsibility for their mistakes, especially considering that we drove out of town to come. Do NOT patronize this place. The owner and staff do not care about their guests. When we explained the situation, they told us "tough luck. Most of our orders are pick-up anyways." I've been here before, and I can say that the restaurant has terrible customer service overall. Servers don't take orders, so you have to order everything from an app on your phone, which takes extremely long. To top it off, all bills come with a 20% gratuity automatically added on. Nobody is bringing you menus or taking your order, so what am I tipping 20% for? After seeing the owner's rude behavior, I'm skeptical that any of the money goes to the actual servers anyways. So excellent. I can't begin to say enough good about this restaurant. A few years ago when I first visited I ordered my food "to the sun" which is the hottest level you can order. I finished my plate and the chef came out to shake my hand for eating it. That set the tone for how friendly and tasty and truly firey this food can be. My partner and I had noticed that CoCo was open again after being closed for remodeling and we knew we had to order. Last night came and we ordered so much. We missed it and I gave some food to a neighbor. The pad Thai and the druken noodle, all so delicious. The duck rolls innovative and fun. The summer rolls light and refreshing. The soup, on the spot. I have never had a bad meal. I truly believe all my meals will be excellent and the service will continue to be top notch. Seldom have I been so disappointed with a restaurant as I was with Coco Thai in Narberth. It had been featured on a local TV network and clientele on the program were raving about the food. I love Thai food so I knew I would one day try out this eatery if I were ever in the neighborhood. Narberth has a wonderful town center and Coco Thai fits in very well. And I have to give kudos for how attractive this spot is with all the plants and greenery. I had hopes. But from the beginning things started to go awry. My phone didn't pick up the menu app. The paper menu I was given I was told had all the wrong prices and when I looked at the online menu, it turned out that those prices were wrong too. Come on - it's 2021 put the correct menu on-line. There was a mix up with the kitchen so my order took a very long time to arrive. When it did, the Thai mango salad was nothing to write home about at all. It had a few slivers of green mango to merit the 'mango' moniker, was not spicy at all, and totally not worth the final price tag of $10.95. (up from$7.95 shown online). The entree of Panang Tofu Curry was def tastier although again not spicy at all. I asked for some extra hot sauce and received a small dollop of 'mild' chili crisp. This dish was priced at almost $18 for lunch. Indeed for a no-drink lunch topping thirty dollars with the tax added, I expected a lot more. The dish was quite spicy, and when I returned to tell them about it the following day, I was told it was my fault, I should have ordered it "Non-spicy." Later in the day I got this text from them, telling me not to return to their restaurant. "Hello, this is Coco Thai Bistro. We are messaging you because there was an incident regarding your order. A Ginger Mushroom was ordered, and a Spicy level 1 was requested. We made per your request. It was not the restaurant's fault the dish was spicy. A non-spicy level was available and could also have been specified in the comment as well. We are happy to refund you. However, we ask that you no longer return to our establishment. I just got takeout summer rolls, because the other place was on vacation and my kids love summer rolls. menu online wouldn't download and I was on time crunch so I just asked for them not knowing how much they were -- shocked that one order of summer rolls was $15. I tried to revise order once I realized how much they were and they said no, too late. Took forever waiting for them. And they were horrible! no noodles, and a whole lot of onion -- really awful. My kids wouldn't eat them so I was stuck plowing through them. Dipping sauce was balsamic salad dressing! the least authentic thing you could imagine. It seemed like a nice place to sit and might be much better for eat in, idk, but for take out, I would definitely not recommend. I was so baffled by these awful, overpriced rolls that I found myself trying to do some internet research to find out if there are any particular Thai traditions for these rolls, but as far as I know, no, these were just weird and bad. Summer rolls, goi cuon, are a Vietnamese dish that is also served in other parts of Asia. Traditionally served with either peanut sauce or chili/lime/fish sauce -- no, there is no tradition of serving it with balsamic salad dressing (!!!!) or including NO rice noodles, NO cilantro, and instead, a whole lot of poorly chopped onion and hunks of random salad ingredients (and then charging $15 a pop). I'd much prefer that they just don't serve summer rolls -- you don't have to! it's fine! -- rather than this really bad experience. Also fwiw: very long wait for take out (when I'd ordered only the rolls). There was only one pair of lunch customers, and a lot of staff, and yet it took a really really long time. The waiter only job is to bring you water. You pay online and select your food from pictures and buttons. There is basically no human contact. Your table is numbered along with a QR menu.
