I'm sadly so emotionally exhausted from my wife and I's experience with this company that writing a review almost doesn't seem worth it. That said, ultimately I think it's important to detail our experience as a warning to others. I should say from the offset that I support the sustainability goal of Coco-Mat but unfortunately had a horrid customer service experience, most specifically with the more senior manager at the Lexington location. We first experienced Coco-Mat on vacation in Europe and couldn't be more excited to try and find one of their mattresses state side. My wife and I both struggle with back problems, and have been having a hard time sorting through the mattress industry, so when we discovered a brand that was environmentally friendly that we were able to test out in the real world we were thrilled. We immediately reached out once we returned stateside and I should say, the sales rep that we initially dealt with was incredibly helpful and attentive. We ordered the same mattress that we had slept on in Europe and were waiting with eager excitement to supposedly bring home the luxurious comfort we had experienced. That's when the problems started. The bed we received, in truth, was literally the hardest mattress we'd ever encountered in my life. The complete opposite of our plush euro experience. My wife and I couldn't make it through one night's sleep on it because it was like sleeping on rocks with straw strewn across it. We've been sleeping on our couch since. We called the store immediately the following day in hopes of returning it within the 14 day satisfaction window and we're told that no return was possible, only an upscale exchange for a more expensive product all at our expense. At this point, after already being out thousands of dollars for a product we detested, their only remedy was for us to spend more and more money with them. From there, the only other remedy offered was a free or discounted mattress topper, which though generous, is a truly incomplete remedy when the bed itself is so hard. Moreover, it makes no sense considering we wouldn't even be able to trial the product. If you just sold me an incredibly tough bed, what's to stop you from sending me and incredibly tough mattress topper? We asked to speak with the manager over the phone in hopes of exploring any other possible make-good, and instead of returning our call, we initially received a nameless/faceless email ostensibly accusing us of frivolously changing our mind and asserting the "excellence and infallibility" of the product and company. Being flexible, we tried to explore any other manner of make-good besides the unwanted mattress topper (partial refund, alternative exchange methods, etc) and were continually talked down by the more senior store manager because of their now almost robot/psychotic assertion of product excellence and the mischaracterization of our product dissatisfaction as "mind changing." "You're wrong and we don't make mistakes" was the vibe. No empathy. Quite frankly it bordered on the edge of corporate gaslighting. Again, I'm sure there are great well meaning people at the company. Moreover, our broad experience with the more junior members on the team really felt like they came from a place of empathy, but other than that this is no way to treat a customer and I wish they would have been more flexible on resolving the issue instead of repeating talk tracks. The matter was never resolved. read more

With only four locations in the US (three of them right here in NYC), Coco-mat is a welcome addition to Murray Hill. Similar to the Gothic Cabinet Craft they replaced, Coco-Mat offers a variety of furniture pieces, but adds to the mix their signature bamboo & natural mattresses, many of which are customizable by adding, removing, or re-arranging the various layers. I've always been intrigued by the Ashwood bikes parked outside of coco-mat. I would walk and fantasize about a mid-summer bike ride at Storm King on these beautiful bikes. Last month, I finally dropped in to check out this store. Maylene at Coco-mat has transformed the way I look at mattresses. She explained to me the harmful effects of the conventional memory mattresses, told me all about the how and what of Coco-mat, and shared a level of enthusiasm that is rare in the retail experience. She taught me all about different pillow types and materials and helped me try out several different kinds before I found the right one. She really knows her stuff and was extremely helpful! I actually came across Coco-mat at the Union Square Earth Day event (they have the cutest bicycle!). They were doing a raffle for the Coco-mat pillows that day and I entered, a week later I got an email from the store saying I won! I went to the Lexington store location, and Maylene and the staff were super helpful. Not only did they explain the materials used for the pillows, they also gave me tips on care/ cleaning. Stopped in as I was waiting on my appointment right next door. The window looked nice, sweet blankets. They carry all natural products, for adults and for infants. The shop keeper was super down to earth and not pushy. Very personable. He greeted me with a warm smile and Greek herbal hot tea, served in a beautiful white mug. Fell in love with the wool feather blanket for my toddler. Definitely didn't expect such a sweet warm experience in a store large enough to be a chain. And this isn't just any pillow - it is the game changer of pillows, a magical sleeping cloud. Gary, who assisted me, was so knowledgeable, helpful, and fun. Before I knew it, I was trying mattresses, practically napping in the store, and laughing about music. He knows the products well and is like the bed whisperer and figured out the best items for my sleep style. This review is only in respect of the extremely kind workers at this location. I was actually standing outside of this store trying to soothe a crying baby -- the manager of the store came out to see if I everything was OK and if there was anything that she could do. I told her that I was fine, and thanked her very much. My child continued to cry, and the manager came BACK OUT about 5 minutes later with a bib and t-shirt which she gave to me for my child to play with. The Coco-Mat store on Lexington Avenue is a beautiful store. It has everything we could want for a luxurious, healthy bedroom. Purchased two natural rubber pillows. While deciding which pillows to buy, the very knowledgeable salesperson invited us to try out different possibilities while lying on a bed but not before putting a new, clean towel on each pillow to protect our heads and faces. I will be back to buy their organic bed linens and whatever else I can't resist not walking out with. read more

We moved back to NY after the birth of our first child after living in Europe and brought our crib with us. When our 2nd child was born here in NY, we wanted to reuse the crib but upgrade the mattress. Unfortunately we found out that finding a European-sized crib mattress in the USA is nearly impossible (especially if one wants to limit oneself to stores in NYC where you can actually touch and feel the mattress before purchasing). After a few months of research, we found Coco-Mat and spoke to Charles W. on the phone and he let us know that Coco-Mat could make us a custom European-sized mattress. When it finally arrived, we loved it and were very impressed with Charles' customer service. Even 8 months later, when we finally used the sheets we'd ordered with the mattress only to find that they were too small, Charles was happy to arrange for us to return them for store credit.
