I went to Coco Beauty hoping to find a place where I could get my acne facials regularly, but I am not returning. The facial itself was fine, but the staff made me uncomfortable by pressuring me to purchase skin care products afterwards. I bought a collagen serum that supposedly would help brighten the redness of my skin, but it doesn't really have any effect and I'm pretty sure is a fake product. Don't get me wrong; where I used to get my acne facials before moving to the Northeast also encouraged me to purchase certain products, but their products actually worked unlike the serum I got here. I am downgrading my review. I've been here many times and have been happy with the services but the last time I went, it was a disaster. I called a few days earlier and made an appointment. They always ask if I have a package and I said no. I showed up to my appointment, 5 min early, and was told that I dint' have an appointment, and that I had no package. What's up with this package obsession? I told them I had called a few days earlier and they just looked confused. Luckily they were able to fit me in a little later so I roamed around to kill time. I came back for my appointment and had the most rushed facial ever. One girl threw stuff on my face, cleaned it off (30 seconds), threw more stuff, and cleaned it off (another 30 seconds). There was no time for my face to absorb any of it! Then another lady came in and did a proper facial for 20 min (extractions etc). Note that the facial is supposed to be 75 min long but its usually 30-40 min of stuff and 20 min with a mask on. This time, it was about 30 min of stuff and 30 min of wearing a mask. When I pay for a 75 min facial, I expect the ladies to work on my face for 75 min!! While you are sitting there with a mask, they start working on another customer. When I walked out, I noticed that there were 4 people in the salon and only 2 ladies working that day. Almost everyone was lying there with a mask (they keep the doors open so that they can run around to different rooms). It is so cheap because really, you are paying for a 40 min facial. read more

The manager is a cheat. Be very careful purchasing a package- they will make all sorts of verbal assurances about how and when you can use it (which they used to honor in the past), but this manager will do her best to try and dock facials off the package for any reason she can fabricate. I have had packages with them for the past 8 years. The facials were nothing fancy, but nice enough for the price. Apart from the fact they try to sell products to you and constantly try to get you to upgrade the package, for the price, the facials were pleasant enough. But now it seems the manager is on a mission to cancel as many pre-paid package facials as she can. With one facial left to go, the manager first claimed she lost my record and so I couldn't finish my package. Then when I told her I had the card they had issued and would bring it in, she changed her story and said they called many times and I didn't schedule an appointment in time. Then when I said we could check records to show that they had not in fact called, she changed the story again and said I had asked them not to call. Bottom line- they have moved to a new location, and are looking for any excuse not to honor the packages they have sold, and somehow believe they will retain customers. This was hands down one of the best facials I've ever had. Signature facial costs $54 and lasted a little over an hour. The place is definitely nothing fancy and don't expect the whole spa experience, but the actual facial was incredible. The esthetician washed, exfoliated, and steamed my face. She then used his cool suction machine to pull all my pimples to the surface. Following she performed the most meticulous extraction I feel like every pimple is gone. Following extraction she used light therapy and gave me a 10 minute face massage. Finally she used a peel off mask. For $54 you get so much done and a truly thorough job. It's 2018, if you purchase a "package", they give you a piece of paper that they manually check off for your facial packages. If you lose this piece of paper, then you lose all the facials you purchased in the package because they supposedly do not keep track of the facials you purchase and how many you use/have left. Ridiculous. But yet they can continuously call me to book appointments. It's really annoying when you finally do call to book one, I tell them the day and time I want and they try to get you to come in on a different day that is more convenient for them. read more

I've been coming to Coco Beauty for about 5 years now and absolutely love them! Coco Beauty is located upstairs on Tyler Street; Melissa(the owner) and Fai-ting are very nice and professional. They use the newest technology with machines to clean your skin, suck white/black heads out, face peels, etc. Usually my facials last about 2 hours (depending on what you do). They start by cleaning my skin of makeup/oil, then they use a roller for skin peel, a hand extraction of pimples, white/black heads, a machine that sucks more crap out of my face, another machine that rolls medication and zaps to prevent infection, and then finally, my lovely collagen-like mask. Like i said before, it is not always painless; but i absolutely love it. My skin has been so much better since. FYI -- coco beauty is closed on Thursdays. I have gotten all kinds of facials. Lots of lotions that you feel like you could do in your own bathroom, hard-core extractions that leave you all red, and everything in between. And at every price! Coco is the best ever, for so many reasons: 1. They have the nice vacuum machine that sucks out your blackheads without pinching up your face. It really leaves you feeling thoroughly cleaned out. 2. They have the cool zappy machine that kills zit bacteria and makes any blemishes you already have, or those about to attack, shrivel up and die. (can you tell I love face technology?) 3. The space is quiet and relaxing, without the new-age assault of annoying music and incense. 4. I always leave there looking five years younger, smooth and relaxed and not at all red and puffy. And all this for, seriously, less than HALF of what you'd pay for similar services elsewhere. Another great thing they do: if you buy the package of multiple facials, they call you every month or two to remind you to use it. Unlike, say, a gym membership, they really make sure that you use the services that you paid for. So sweet! And I never feel any pressure to buy stuff. Not sure what the deal on tipping is. I go with a Chinese friend, and she says that a tip is not expected. But I tip anyway; they do such a good job that I'd feel bad if I didn't. read more

Coco Beauty is an unpretentious, economical, and efficient little spa tugged away in the unassuming streets of Chinatown. It's getting a 3-star instead of a 4 because you do not get your own private rooms and can hear all the chatters from other rooms. The estheticians also enter the rooms to talk to their coworkers about some business stuff in the middle of your session at a normal volumem, which I don't like. That said, they are very good with the actual business they do on your faces and charge a very reasonable price. I purchased a package of 6 or 12 facials after visiting last November, when I started breaking out continuously for the first time in my life. The average cost of each after that: around $35! Each of my facial actually lasts about 90 minutes and I always need 30 minutes getting into the "zone" because of noises that I mentioned earlier. However, the latter 60 minutes part are usually very relaxing. Most of the things are pretty standard, except that they use a suction tool for your white and black heads and clean up the fine hairs around your brows. One thing that I really like about Coco is that Melissa and her employees have never pushed any product or other services on me. I don't know if this would be true for all other customers but I really appreciate that. So, If you consider a facial a full relaxation treatment for the entire 60-120 minutes then this may not be the right place for you. I had Micki (spelling?) and it was one of the worst facials I've ever gotten. To give Micki credit, she was very thorough, spending almost 2 hours with me. However, she has a "heavy hand." No only was the facial incredibly painful, but it's 6 days later and my face looks far worse than when I walked in to Coco. The areas that Micki used a machine on look fun, but most blackheads she extracted manually got infected. As I am getting older, I have to be more aware of my skin and taking better care of it. Although I have been blessed with a clear complexion and youthful looks (yay for being Asian!). I know that this can't last or can it? I started to treat myself to facials whenever I felt like my skin was dehydrated or was looking a bit dull. I've been to Coco Beauty a few times over the last 2 years. Honestly, you are not going to get the spa treatment with quiet private rooms and/or relaxing music. You are however, going to get a deep clean, all the gunk out of you, fresh clean face after 1.5 hours of laying in a semi uncomfortable bed with a blanket on you while the woman do their thang. The extractions here are so thorough. Sometimes there will be another person in there getting the same thing done, its like a couples facials except you don't know the person. You may hear conversations in Chinese among the aestheticians or clients but nonetheless at least for me, I have always been able to fall asleep during my facials. For $49, you can't go wrong unless you are snooty and think this is a luxury spa. For that, I suggest going to Newbury St. and paying more for it. Got an eyelash perm with Melissa here the day I called. I was excited about the yelp reviews and price described on yelp ($33) since where I'm from, they're around $50. Eyelash perms normally take 45 minutes to an hour and my appointment was an hour before closing time so I was worried my appointment would be rushed. However, I am so pleased with the results! :) She spent an hour and 15 minutes making my lashes perfect. When one didn't set as well she re-did it and took the time to make it lovely. Now I skip my usual practice of wearing eyeliner everyday and only wear mascara since it really makes them pop. Also, price listed on yelp previously was incorrect and the cost was $40 without tip. But that's okay since it's still cheaper and has better results than I'm used to. Parking in the lot is expensive so take the T. Definitely going here again. read more

Just went in for a facial, which was a pretty annoying and unproductive experience. While the facial was already happening, when I had cotton over my eyes, the aesthetician kept going on about how I needed to upgrade to a much more expensive facial because my skin is extremely dry. When I told her I wasn't interested (very awkward to be going through this considering my eyes were covered and I couldn't see her), she kept going on and on and on about it. Of course, my skin is not (as a matter of fact) dry--I actually have pretty great skin that has caused me very few problems lately. Anyways, super annoying to have to deal with a nagging extended upsell attempt during the facial itself. Besides that, there was lots of chatter between aestheticians, some vacuuming in the hall (I came around closing), and whatever other distractions that I would have forgiven had the results been good, but..... As for results, one of the things she punctured (I think that's what she did? I hadn't even noticed I had a problem there to begin with) got a decent infection. I've also had way more zits than average (average being almost none at all) since having my facial. So.... $60 after tip for no noticeable results (and actually worse skin than when I started), plus an unpleasant experience? Needless to say I won't be going back. read more

Found this place on Yelp back in Jan 2015 and have been a loyal customer since. I've only had the facials here and they're so relaxing that I always end up falling asleep by the end of the session. It's so worth it that I drive ~1 hr to get here. As other yelpers have mentioned, don't expect this place to be a typical spa experience with all the extra fluff. I have been a client of this hidden gem for almost two years. My sister introduced me to this place years ago but it wasn't until late 2006 that I finally decided to try it out. I am so glad I did because I find that the effects of the facials done at Co Co Beauty last significantly longer than those done at other spas/salons. Prices are very inexpensive relative to the Newbury Street spas. As noted in other reviews, buying facials in multiples is the best deal, especially if you plan on coming back. The salon is well appointed, tidy, and simple. Every staff member is very friendly, although communication can be problematic with a few of the aestheticians. I referred a friend of mine here and while she loved it, she noted that the communication with her aesthetician was challenging. Aside from a potential communication barrier, there are two other items to point out. First, like nearly every salon/spa, the aestheticians are trained to be add-on salespeople. They will try to get you to upgrade your facials or add on additional treatments. Personally, I find it annoying that in the midst of a facial, the person is trying to sell you on an eye treatment for an extra $$. The sales pitch continues to their products which they will try to push on you. (Maybe that communication gap is a good thing...they won't try to sell you anything.) Second, if you are accustomed to private rooms while getting a facial, then this will be a culture shock. There are multiple rooms but each room has two beds so you have to share a room with another person. There is no privacy divider (at least the last time I was there). Not a big deal to me but some people may find this odd. If you do not care about spa-like ambience and can deal with not having the privacy, then this is one of the best bargains around for great facial treatments. read more

This review is for my friend and I. Initially, we just planned to check out the place, but then they talked us into buying the 6 facials package deal. Typical... We went to every facial together and 5 out of the 6 times I would give this place 3 stars. They did the normal facial stuff, but on one occasion, I had this one woman that was not gentle at all. Some parts could have been less painful, but it didn't seem to matter to her. And another downside to that experience was that the mask at the end was dripping all over my neck, pretty uncomfortable. My friend on the other hand seemed to get that woman every time. I wish I asked her for her name, but I never got the chance. She basically sucks. Get a 1.5-2hr facial for under $50. I am a regular customer and I really like how meticulous they are with cleaning out the impurities. And for those who have never had a Chinese facial---it hurts like the DICKENS for about 20 mins when they are picking out your blackheads---but it is very relaxing afterwards. WAY better than any of the Newbury spas which don't take the time and it cost about $80 just to get a mask put on your face. Check it out!! 1+ hour facial for only $45? This place gets 5 stars. Everyone else who has reviewed here pretty much sums it up. This was my first facial in a while and I have a bad T-zone problem, so Melissa had to work extra hard on me. They start you off with a peeling cream that gets rid of all the dead skin cells hanging around on your face, steam your pores open (literally), use a mini-vacuum on your pores (doesn't hurt), literally pick the blackheads out (hurts a lot), apply lotion and a face massage, and end with a cooling/relaxing face mask. That's a lot of stuff for just $45. At other salons I've been to, $60-$80 just gets you three different kinds of creams on your face and little to no massage. The place is a little hard to find (as soon as you turn onto Tyler St. off Kneeland St., look to your left and up, it's on the second floor above Pearl Villa restaurant). But it's very cozy and pretty on the inside, and totally worth the 1+ hours you'll spend there. It's not fancy and you won't have a room all to yourself, but for what you get, who cares? If you're looking for a relatively cheap, periodic self-indulgence, then CoCo Beauty should be your first stop. read more

I have not had a ton of facials, but the ones I have had were at high-end spas for special occasion type things. I feel one hour at Coco, where serious extractions are the standard, does more for my skin than any number of high-end facials consisting of 5 different good-feeling creams could do. I have clogged and not-very-sensitive skin. They spend a LONG time on extractions, and after 1 hour told me they had only just gotten started and to come back soon so they could clean me out more -- ha! Thanks. Seriously though, I will take a little gentle ribbing for noticeably clearer skin, which I got. I had basically no (added) redness after my facial, which was a wonderful surprise. Just smooth skin and fewer threatening blemishes. I am jealous of the girls who got to see the vacuum extraction results. Sorry to be gross, but I would have liked to see that. The hand extractions do hurt some, but I didn't find it that bad. Similar to when you do it yourself (tsk, tsk), but psychologically it feels worse when someone else does it to you. As another yelper said, I get facials for my skin, not the atmosphere. It's a long-term investment, and if I enjoy the experience it's a nice perk. That said, Coco Beauty is an insanely good value, the atmosphere is totally fine as long as you know what to expect, and I'll definitely be going back. My skin was much smoother and clearer afterwards, and I'm looking forward to going semi-regularly to see what it does for me. I would probably never go even semi-regularly at typical facial pricing, so the owner is smart to keep the pricing at bay. After doing some good research on where to get my first facial, I finally stepped foot into this place. I took my friend here and treated us both to a basic facial for her birthday. It's located on the same street as China Pearl, on the top floor, so make sure you look up. The facials cost $45 and you get a full hour or more of relaxation. Magic 106.7 was playing on the overhead speaker in the private room I shared with my friend, which was relaxing. They explained to us each step: Wash, Exfoliate, Steam, Sucking Machine, More Extractions, Cooling Cream, Zapping Machine, then Cooling Mask. It definitely wasn't a painless procedure. When theyre squeezing all the gunk out of your face or your pre-existing pimples, it kills! Also the gunky mask they put on you looks funny! I couldn't stop laughing at how silly my friend looked. I was excited to have a 1.5 to 2 hour facial for under 50 bucks, but mine came to something like 68, because she asked me if I wanted such and such treatment and I wasn't thinking, and it was apparently more expensive. Lesson learned. She really did suck the nastiness out of my face. I get a weird sick pleasure out of seeing exactly how much waxy debris comes out of my face into the suction thing. It hurt, but it wasn't unbearable. My favorite part was the steam and everything with tea tree oil that she used. My skin was looking pretty bad when I came in. I was somewhat expecting to come out with a shiny beautiful face but it wasn't quite like that. It still looked spotty and irritated... but the next day it definitely felt cleaner and better. In fairness, I had a nasty head cold so that was probably contributing to my facial inflammation. I would go again. read more

As this is my first facial, I really have nothing to compare it to, so please read this with that in mind. I called in today (Sunday) and they had an opening the same day with Melissa (as recommended by all you yelpers)! How's that for convenience? I didn't go in thinking this would be like a Newbury salon, or a Newbury type facial. Since I'm unfamiliar with Chinatown, I MBTA-ed directions and ended up being 45min late in a downpour!!! Get off on the Chinatown (Orange line) stop. It's a block away! I was soaking wet and super late, but everyone was really nice and understanding. They even DRIED my clothes for me!! WOW. Def. get an extra star just for that! They take off make-up/clean your face with a creamy liquid, then Melissa uses a machine to extract my pores, and even used a manual tool to get the rest. Then some high frequency (?) wand to kill bacteria, and a hydrating mask/peel. I have really bad pores, and they are *much* smaller now. It didn't even hurt one bit! Melissa was very gentle and soothing - the facial massage was great. I would come back just for that! :) And for $45, it's a definite steal! I didn't get the complimentary eyebrow shaping as another yelper, but I try to maintain my eyebrows daily. Whatever they used on my eyes made the puffiness recede which I LIKE. The tone and texture of my face is pretty much the same - sort of blotchy, rough - but shinier (which I don't think is a good thing). BUT many yelpers said the next day/throughout the week they have noticed a remarkable difference in their complexion so I will update in a few days. As others have said, the radio is tuned into 106.7 so when it's not on commercial, you'll hear some upbeat music. Also, there were people outside honking their horns for at least 10min while I was "relaxing" LOL. All in all, it's a clean place, with great people, and won't hurt your pocket! For a no frills facial, this is the place to be! My husband and I have been coming here for several years now - once a month for their basic cleansing facial. The expert staff cleans your face and works on your black heads, white heads, and whatever crap you have on your face using a sucking machine and then by hand to extract out the impurities. They also steam your face. The best part, though, is the face massage! Without fail, my husband always falls asleep at this part because it so relaxing. We buy the package, so for women's, it turns out to be about $35 per facial, which is a steal considering you're getting 1.5 hrs worth of services. Men's is slightly more expensive. I guess guys are just dirtier :p My favorite aesthetician is Melissa, who is also the owner. Next best is Fai Ting but she only helps out occasionally now because she went back to school. Tina is pretty good. But I'm not so fond of Vicki, or is it Micki? All in all, this is a great gem. Just don't come here expecting a luxury spa. I'm really happy with my facial experience and am a current customer as of now because I got a huge package deal where my facials come out to about less than $30/facial. The two people I usually see are Fi-ting and Melissa. Both are really good at sucking out all the gunk and leaving my face feeling nice and clean. They have always been really friendly to me although sometimes when I hear them speaking English to other customers it doesn't always sound great. I know it's just a language barrier and they don't mean any ill will by it. Basic facials usually go like this: Wash, Exfoliate, Steam, Sucking Machine, More Extractions, Cooling Cream, Zapping Machine, then Cooling Mask. I have "problematic" skin and have spent A LOT of money going for facials. I've gone to fancy spa's to the not so fancy and never left feeling completely satisfied. I did after coming here however. I did buy a package deal from them as I think this is the best place for maintenance service. A two hour facial (and they gave me a complimentary eye brow shaping) for 45$! I am now a proud member of this mini spa! $42 for a facial, and $38 if you purchase a membership package, and there are 6 facials in a package - totally worth it! I've gotten facials and eyelash perms a handful of times now, and I've usually had no problems getting an appointment on the day or one day prior. I usually go on weekends, and the place seems to be fully booked. I've seen at least four staff at this spa. The spa was renovated late Jan/early Feb., so it is brighter and spaces are more efficiently used. I've never set appointment with any particular beautician, and they tend to switch people in the middle of the facials, so I can never say who is the good one. I know, however, that Mimi is excellent for eyelash perms (twice with her, great results), and the owner of the place is really good at facials. Asian facials tend to extract EVERYTHING, so if you are looking for an entirely relaxing experience, you might want to think twice about coming to Coco. That is by no means to say that the one-hour-and-half facials are not relaxing though. The facial massage is heavenly and something I really look forward to every 3-4 weeks or so. I took away one star because they don't tell you what kind of products that they use. Though I've not had a reaction to anything they've used on my face, this might not be the case for everyone. I have to say that I've gotten five facials every month or so since Jan 2008, and I really feel that my skin is much better and smoother. I had my second facial of the six yesterday, with "Tina". She did a good job and it took super long to suck out all the black and white heads. Probably since the last time I'd come was five months ago. Not a place for the high maintenance folks. When the mask was applied in the end, I heard them working on someone in the bed next to me. You get sooo relaxed that I had to shake my legs and hands because they'd started falling asleep. I felt almost dazed when I got up. I get a little anxious wondering what the creams contain, and if they're doing more harm than good, but just the ultra relaxed feeling afterward makes it worth the $37.50. read more

Okay, so I first heard about eyelash perms a while ago and was completely intrigued by them. Let me preface this with letting you know how much I *hate* makeup. I am definitely a wash-and-go kind of girl. Anyways, I have very long, straight eyelashes that I curl every day in order to open up my eyes. Coco Beauty is a little hidden in the upstairs of the building and the sign is a little small. Despite the outside, the inside is very nice, very well-maintained. The walls are a lovely, peaceful chocolate brown. I was the only person there besides the two women who were working. After washing my face, Melissa suggested the facial they have for problematic skin for $90. Thanks to other yelpers, I knew there were cheaper options. The facial I got was still one geared towards problematic skin at $68. Their standard deep-pore cleansing facial is $45, but Melissa did not give me this option, nor did I insist on it. Melissa spent a looonngg time doing extractions for me, with fantastic results. My pores were super clogged (which she commented on...thanks) but she did a really great job; I have super smooth skin today & noticeably less acne/redness. She also did my eyebrows perfectly for me. I was disappointed that there was no massage, but it was still really relaxing...I'm pretty sure I dozed off for a least a few minutes. There are several rooms there, though they are only separated by curtains, not doors so if there were other people, it could be annoying. They had the radio (106.7) playing which sometimes meant upbeat pop music. Constant sirens (its right by Tufts Medical Center) were also a little distracting. I plan on coming back very soon. Much cheaper than anywhere else with absolutely no loss on treatment quality. I get facials for my skin, not for the ambiance of the salon. read more

Thank god for yelp. I was in boston for a weekend and desperately needed a facial. I also found out that they had eyelash perms!!! something I haven't trusted anyone to do since MYU Beauty in Irvine, CA (who specializes in eyelash perms). Both my cousin and I got facials and eyelash perms. The facial was extremely detailed in the extractions, which didn't hurt as much as many of the asian places I've been to and the eyelash perm was fabulous. Glad there's a place on the east coast that does a great job at facials and eyelash perms. read more

I had great facial experience here. Very nice space inside. You'd never know it by the busy and dirty streets outside. They're a little bit pricey. I went all out and tried all the procedures the facialist had recommended (after she examined my skin). $90 plus tip in the end. Anyway, she was friendly and very good at what she does. I could tell. She spoke in a heavy accent. But that's it. Led me through a hallway. There were clean cubicles for each client. It was a very calming environment. I almost fell asleep! I didn't want to get up. My facialist was very gentle with her hands. I saw a big difference in my skin after. Very soft and smooth, no pimples at all!!! read more

I went to Coco this past spring (March 2009) for a facial. It was a good experience - up to par with the price. I would've like more facial massage - I like a more active facial. This was a cleanse, mask, steam, extraction (via a face vacuum - not as scary as it sounds) deal - with lots of alone time. I thought they forgot about me at one point. It seemed thorough, I wasn't amazed and won't go back. But that's just because I don't get facials regularly and I get my hopes up! The place is clean and the women are really nice. read more
