A couple weeks ago I visit SKA Scalp spa for the first time. The space is beautiful, quiet and relaxing. Overall I found the experience to be wonderful and informative, albeit expensive. I feel that our scalp health is something easily looked over and I was looking forward to treating myself to this service. First, I went over some of my concerns with my specialist and she took photos of my scalp to diagnose any issues. This area is where I deducted a star because a lot of information was being discussed and it was hard to keep track of it all. She gave me a lot of tips and recommendations and I asked if she would be able to write them down for me, but she said they would be in my file. However the file did not really include anything other than the service I was given and recommended products, but not any of the several actions she recommended a incorporate into my routine. I felt this information was a part of the steep price so I would have appreciated being able to have a chance to write it down. After this portion, we went to the spa where I received a head, neck and shoulder massage along with an array of scalp treatments. This lasted over an hour and was incredibly relaxing and worth the money alone. I did not feel it was rushed, she really look her time with each step. After this, she took another round of photos, followed by 5 minutes of red light therapy and some light blow drying. Overall I really enjoyed my experience and while I wont be going the recommended once a month due to price, I will definitely do it once in a while. read more

I initially came here for a scalp treatment and haircut. I've never gotten a scalp treatment before but considering how easily oily my scalp gets, I thought it would be nice to treat myself to one. SKA Beauty made the experience so calming and comfortable (I almost fell asleep!). I also chopped off a significant portion of my hair and my stylist made sure I knew the best ways to style my hair and asked me about my hair styling routine. After chatting with her about wanting to dye my hair, she also gave me a full consultation and I came back a few weeks later to bleach and dye my hair. Since it's all open once you're laying down on your table you can hear any machine rinsing/moving sound from the person in the spaces next to you, which takes you out of the zen moment sometimes. It was a privilege to have Nan as my hair stylist at SKA. I messaged the team with a specific look in mind, and they recommended that I come get a consultation. During the consultation, Nan assessed my hair texture, condition, and recommended a Korean perm. Because I have super thick hair, I was nervous about the result - but Nan assured me it would help me achieve the volume that I was seeking. In my second appointment, Nan did the wash, cut, perm, and also taught me how to care for / style the perm. I appreciated how detail-oriented, and thoughtful her approach was. For example, because I recently had some hair loss & regrowth, she took the time to painstakingly perm the baby hairs that were just growing out. The final result was exactly what I had hoped for. As someone who doesn't often take time for spa services, this was a very relaxing experience. I've never been into massages, so I booked for the signature scalp treatment since I struggle with dry scalp. The Pros: The salon/spa is beautiful, very calm and peaceful. The music wasn't overwhelming, the decor was neutral and elegant. They gave me a small locker as soon as I checked in which had room for my bag and shoes, and they gave me soft comfy sandals to wear around the spa while I was there. The scalp treatment itself was lovely and relaxing. Jessica was the woman who did my treatment and she was great. It was also very cool to see the before and after pictures of my scalp with the camera. The Cons: During the scalp assessment before the treatment, I was upsold to a more expensive service than what I booked for, and they did not take no for an answer. It would have been nice to know ahead of time that based on the assessment, the price and duration of the actual treatment is subject to increase by $20+. They provide a shirt to change into before the treatment begins, but they only had one size in the treatment space which was too small. I had to ask for a larger size, which I don't mind doing, but having the option in the room would have saved some embarrassment. Street parking is limited, but there is a T stop right across the street. read more

My review is for SKA Skalp. I had an amazing scalp treatment. It was relaxing and overall my experience was great until... blow dry. I totally get that this a a scalp treatment but you would think paying $200+ for a scalp treatment meant that you would leave the salon with a decent look. This is a warning if you have curly/frizzy hair that requires some sort of styling like a blow out, straightening, or use of any other tools beside a basic run through your fingers blow dry. When I looked in the mirror, my hair looked like Anne Hathaway before her makeover in Princess Diaries. I was pretty mortified. I had a dinner in a few hours and wasn't expecting to need to go home and do my hair. I asked the woman if SKA's sister salon could fit me in for a style which they did and I appreciated. I had to spend another $30 or so dollars to get my hair blown out and wavy curls. Again, the scalp treatment was great and if you are lucky like most Asians to have natural perfectly straight hair then this is great for you. You'll need to either be prepared to go home and finish your hair or find another salon to style if your hair is curly. During the treatment I fully intended to come back after the 4 weeks they recommend but I don't want to deal having to go to the other salon to finish the job. I have been here 2x and I will never go to another salon again. I did a ton of research on boston salons (specifically colorists) and SKA did not disappoint. It's also affordable! First time I came for a haircut and asked for a butterfly cut with rounded layers. they were so nice and so knowledgable. second time, i came to irivin to dye my hair a wine red color. the whole process took the entire day bc we had to bleach my hair. i posted an inspo pic here of what i asked for and what i got. i literally could not be happier. it looks SO GOOD! irivin also gave me realistic expectations since my hair had been bleached and dyed before. it still turned out better than i could've imagined. if you have asian hair (and especially if you're bleaching it), PLEASE do yourself a favor and go to SKA because they will take care of it better than anywhere else can. read more

SKA is an incredible head / scalp spa. It was my first time getting a treatment like this, and I went for the "relaxation" scalp treatment (you can also book for specific treatments for dry or itchy scalp, etc). It was UNREAL. They massaged my scalp, shoulders, back, neck, used hot stones, got an incredibly thorough and relaxing shampoo + conditioning, a gentle blow dry at the end... my hair has never felt so SOFT and my scalp is clean. The providers there are so friendly and kind, and super skilled and talented in their craft. Everyone should experience this! Don't think, just book! read more

I would give this business and my experience more than 5 stars if I could. First, my friend decided to visit me from out of state and the spa went above and beyond to move things around so we could both be seen on the same day. They were patient, understanding, and genuine in caring. Second, we drove 2 hours from New Hampshire to get this service, there was no where closer. In classic Boston fashion there was traffic and we arrived 10 minutes late. Again, the staff were understanding and kind. They did not make us feel rushed and they did not take off time from our services. We were very thankful. Then the service... we got the scalp treatment with May. It was the most magical experience. It was relaxing, felt good, and not rushed. May also pid a lot of attention to blow drying my hair, it looks beautiful! Lastly, the location itself is cute and polished. I needed a haircut and I have never needed a hair stylist on the East Coast as I normally get my hair cut in Los Angeles. I came here on a Saturday morning and they were very friendly, taking my coat to be hung up and providing locker spaces for smaller items like sweaters and purses. I was given a robe and was taken to get my hair washed. That was definitely a thorough hair wash and I was taken over to finally get my hair cut. My hair is normal Asian hair, but naturally a little wavy. It was getting way too long and I needed someone who I can trust and and depend on for the future. Upon making an appointment, I knew of no one but by reading reviews, I saw that Sophie was the most popular stylist. Sophie asked what I wanted and really turned my thoughts into reality. I had asked for a good amount to be chopped off (~5-6 inches), with layers, and bangs. She graciously did her magic and showed me how to style my bangs as well. She was very patient and kind throughout the appointment. I would definitely recommend her and SKA to any of my close friends! Loved the studio, as it was clean and chic. Definitely worth every penny for their service, cleanliness, and everything in between! read more

I remember saying that I will come back for a scalp management session and I am glad that I came back. Susan's amazing, she is very knowledgeable about the skin and scalp. I book an appointment for hair relaxation but because I am 8 months pregnant, she advised against it because of the essential oil. She helped me with my oil build-up and teach me how to do aftercare. I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS PLACE! To preface, I dyed my hair at home for like 6 years. Basically all throughout college and after. Thus, I came to my hair bleached and pretty much dead (see before photo below). So, I figured it was time to finally 1) get it done professionally and 2) start taking better care of my hair. Sophie and her team were wonderful! I reached out to them on instagram and then we set up an appointment. They were so kind and friendly when I got there! They got started on my hair, constantly checking on me to make sure I was comfortable, if I needed water/soda, if I was hungry, etc. It was a long process, but totally worth it! They were careful in making sure to go slow and steady so my hair would be ok. They also gave me a haircut and chopped off my dead ends. They also included a free purple shampoo to tone my hair, and recommended some hair care products based on my questions, which I happily purchased! The cherry on top was that I actually wasn't 10000% happy with the way my hair first came out. It was no fault on their end, since it was the color I asked for, but it felt too light on my skin tone. They stayed AFTER HOURS to achieve the perfect hair color, and even walked me out to my uber since it was late at night. Overall, amazing experience. 10/10 hair color, 10/10 people, and honestly the day flew by. Highly recommend! And I'll definitely come back soon! Thank you!!! read more

The is the worst experience that I have had till now with salons at Boston. DONT GO! There's nothing about the late policy on the reservation website, reservation email, nor reservation texts. I arrived 20 minutes late due to the parking limitation around Chinatown, and they told me that I need to reschedule. In that 20 minutes, nobody called me, no text messages, no email at all. Every time I go I have a great experience. I go for the hair cut/styling. Everyone is so nice and will work with you to give you the cut you want while still making sure it will actually look good on you. I used to get my hair cut by the owner Sophie who was truly amazing. Sadly she has stepped back from styling to take on a more managerial role, but I still feel confident that all the stylists there will do a great job with my hair. An overall pleasant experience! I was shocked to see the before and after pictures of what my scalp look like- a lot of build up, irritation and oil before- ew! After- completely clean and fresh. So cool! They use this micro scope camera to show you what the scalp looks like. I liked the scalp service and found it relaxing, but I do agree with other reviewers that if there was a bit of a massage or something else happening during the 15 minutes while you are laying there with the steam, it would have really been the cherry on top. This review is for a recent haircut at their other location. I had my service with Nan, and she was really great. From shampoo to cutting to styling to blow drying, my experience was very relaxing and I came out feeling amazing with my new cut. I had asked her to cut it a bit shorter and we decided on cutting the dead ends and then adding in layers to lift up the volume of my hair on top. Nan gave so many tips on how to "lazy" style it and how to manage the texture of my hair. One thing I have to point out is she used heat protectant before blow drying, and I can say that's the first time a stylist has ever done that for me during a hair appointment - I was really happy! This was one of the best haircut experiences I've had! I booked with Wesley and he greeted me right when I walked in and I was seated right away. He immediately began helping me figure out what would work best for my hair and offered me plenty of examples to choose from to show what he was thinking. He gave me the best shampoo/conditioner wash ever and he was really gentle with my head. Once we got to the cutting part, I could tell he is really detail-oriented and is really thoughtful about each cut he made. He showed me how to accurately style my hair, what tools to use, and how I can trim my own bangs in between haircuts! Another great experience at SKA, I got my extremely long hair(dark brown naturally) colored to a almost silver-grey brown(only at the ends, balayage) The service was relaxing, the products used were healthier than many of the products I've seen (higher quality). It is indeed really important to use better products for hair especially if you have darker hair tone and want to bleach it for a lighter color. Just a suggestion: if anyone like me who has darker hair and wants to get your hair colored lighter color(like silver or ash grey etc.) remember to use hair mask! The first time I came here was for a scalp treatment. I didn't know exactly what I was looking for but Sophie and Yan were super knowledgeable and could instantly pinpoint what scalp issues I was facing: oiliness, thinning hair, and clogged follicles. Sophie used a microscope on my head so I could see exactly what she was talking about and WOW, I had no idea my follicles had so much buildup. Yikes. Anyways, we opted for the deep cleansing treatment, which felt like a luxury spa experience. I fell asleep within minutes of getting my scalp steamed because it was just that relaxing. Then Yan followed up with more treatments in the shampoo bowl and even threw in a moisturizing mask for me because she noticed my ends were dry. 10/10 experience with the sweetest staff ever. My scalp felt super clean and my hair was shiny for weeks after. And that was only after one treatment! I can imagine with regular follow-ups my hair would glow up even more. I knew I had to come back for my haircut, and I decided to book with Sophie because she really just knows her stuff and I felt so reassured in her chair last time. This time was no different. I'm not one to usually just tell the stylist to do whatever they think is best, but with Sophie I only have to show her an inspo photo and she somehow manages to replicate that BUT customizes it to fit my face shape and my routine. I love this place for a women's haircut! I only needed a bang trim this time, but I would happily come back for a full haircut. The place is kind of small and cramped, however, the stylist (unfortunately I didn't catch her name) listened to what I wanted and exceeded my expectations. There was no wash for the bang trim (which I prefer anyway), she looked at the photo I showed her and minutes later, I had the bang trim of my dreams. The bang trim was $15 + tip and I will definitely come back.
