We dined at this restaurant today and had an awful experience. Our waiter was rude and short with us, he got two of our orders wrong, yet we didn't complain we just fixed it ourselves, and to top it off he had the nerve to call me rude for asking for a boxes while my mother in law was still eating. To be honest I was still eating too but I had four kids with me and they were finished so i wanted to get their food packed up so when we were done we could leave. My partner and the father of my children passed away suddenly 8 months ago and all we wanted to do was to have a nice lunch and do something that we all use to do together and our waiter sure ruined the day! We've been here twice, and both times, I haven't been too impressed. The restaurant hasn't been very busy on either visit, but the staff is friendly and helpful. There are a couple of notes on the front door--one mentions that some menu items have an upcharge and recommends asking your waiter for details, while another states that there's an additional charge for using a credit card due to processing fees. It's good to know these things in advance. I do wish the menu listed which items have an upcharge, but I assume the waiter would mention it when ordering. I ordered a "Create Your Own Combo" meal with one quesadilla and rice and beans since I wasn't too hungry (plus, I have a hard time resisting the free chips and salsa). The salsa is nothing special but does the job. We also ordered the Choridip, which was great with the chips and as a topping for our entrees. My husband got the steak fajitas. The food came out quickly and in generous portions, so we had leftovers to take home. Unfortunately, my chicken quesadilla was a bit disappointing--the meat was watery, which made the tortilla soggy. I've been here many times and it's always been pretty good. Chips and salsa are always good and the house margaritas are very tasty. Service is always fast and courteous. It's also nice to see Alfredo still serving up table side guac. Today I had the shrimp fajitas and they were probably the best I've had here in a while. Good portion size with plenty of decent sized shrimp. The side includes rice, beans, guac, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes along with 3 small flour or corn tortillas. My mom and I went this establishment yesterday. We had a very enjoyable time sitting at the bar. The bartender was very attentive. The margaritas were flavorful and we enjoyed the chips and salsa. My mom ordered the queso dip for the first time. She really enjoyed it. Other places it is runny however at this place was thick and stayed in your chip. My only concern was the temperature of the food. We were one of three tables currently eating at the restaurant and our food was not really hot. Warm actually. OMG AUTHENTIC, DELIGHTFUL, and DELICIOUS... They come around and offer to make complimentary fresh gaucamole at the table. Its a performance and is delicious all in one. The food is delightful and the portions are huge!!! So Worth the money spent. I was there with a large group for lunch from my work. We were able to get in and out in about an hour which is great at lunch time. Everyone loved their meals and were stuffed leaving. Thankfully it wasn't dead of summer for August or we may have burst. Cocina Real is a small restaurant in New Berlin, almost kind of hard to spot. Once you're inside, you're transported out of New Berlin, WI to a different world of Latin rhythms and smells. The staff was wonderfully present and supportive, with their frequent check-ins. COMBO PLATES: the enchilada, burrito, and quesadilla were good deals. You essentially get a combination of selects that are your choice for a certain price. The flour burrito encased with cheese, onions, lightly roasted peppers, and beans tastes fresh, but the sauces fell short. It was hard to tell what the dishes were sauced with, and it lacked anything more than the tomatoes from the salsa and the taste of fresh pepper. I think it would've been nice to know if it was listed on the menu. Otherwise, it was all a good lunch deal, vibes, and wonderful staff. It was also pretty vegetarian friendly! read more

Came here for dinner and overall loved it! The chips and salsa came out right away. Overall the service was pretty fast the whole time. The chips could use salt but tasted fresh. The salsa was perfectly spicy! The drinks were good and my husband said the margarita was pretty strong too. He got the combo platter and said the chicken was cooked and seasoned well. The sauces on top were also great! Beans and rice were average but good for the price. I got the steak fajitas and the steak was cooked perfectly and really seemed like good quality. I stopped here for lunch and I sat at the bar because it was empty and I was served chips and salsa. The salsa was average and the chips were warm and seasoned nicely. I ordered a house margarita blended which was pre made in a slushy machine and not even made to order which was average also. I ordered the two combination lunch special with a shrimp taco and ground beef burrito that comes with beans and rice. My lunch plate took about 15 minutes to hit the bar and it looked strange because the melted cheese looked like it already hardened up but I thought that's not possible. I peeked into the shrimp taco and it had grilled shrimp that looked good so I started on the shrimp taco and my first thought was that the shrimp had no warmth left in it for being grilled, was this a cold taco?. I moved to the rice and it had no warmth in it also. The ground beef burrito was pathetic looking because it was basically an enchilada but no warmth either. I moved the rice into the beans to mix up and the hardened cheese on the burrito clung to the burrito. My mixed up beans and rice and they had no warmth in it either. The cheese was obviously melted at one time but none of the food was even warm and how is that possible, did my plate sit for 15 minutes before I got it ??? When I got my check I did something that I have never done and I asked for the manager and I was told he is not in so I tell my server that none of my food was warm let alone hot. He apologized and said why didn't I send it back and I told him that don't ever send food back and what the kitchen gives me is what get, besides I don't want the Yelp special. He then offers to not charge me and I say I'm not looking for anything for free and I'm even going to tip you 30% because your not responsible for what the kitchen does but I will never come back again. Probably the worst $25 lunch I can remember and I didn't even take the leftovers home because I was done with the place and yes I paid for everything, accepting a free meal will not make it any better when it's not served properly. read more

I ordered take out and it was almost 39.00. Which I would have been okay with as the portions are large for the price HOWEVER the quality of the food is not. It was busy which I understood, but I selected a time to pick my food up and when I got there the host asked me if he could help me and when I said I was there for pick up he said someone will be right with you and proceeded to look past me and seat dinners. This went in for about 5 minutes until a waitress came over and gave me my food. The whole time the host was seating other guests I saw my food on a table in the bar area. I specifically asked for no black beans on the nachos and paid extra to have them omitted. Imagine my surprise when I got home and saw black beans all over my nachos. The chicken chimichanga was cold. The beef one was as well. The lettuce was beginning to brown and the rice was also cold. The guacamole was very good. That's the only thing that was good. The young girl who handed me my order as polite and had an inviting smile. She was a pleasure to have around. So for 39.00, and a 10 minute drive I ended up with tasty guacamole and a nice smile from a waitress. I'm not a gambler but if I was I would know those aren't good odds and certainly not enough to make me go back. As I always do I will wait 6 months before returning as anyone can have an off night. However cold underwhelming food is a deal breaker. So based on tonight's dinner I can't recommend this restaurant. In six months I'll try it again. Tonight it gets one star. read more

My family and I have been going here for the past few years. The food is always consistently good and the service is wonderful. My two kids love the Mac & Cheese off the kids menu and the table side guacamole. I usually go for the mole enchiladas or tacos and my husband really likes this chicken dish that had smothered cheese and veggies. The restaurant typically isn't too crazy busy. I don't really remember having to ever wait to be seated and it isn't loud either. Highly recommend you give it a shot! read more

We anticipated every place being packed and made plans to go elsewhere if the wait was too long at Cocina Real. When we arrived, every table in the place was filled and there was a party of 5 standing in front of us. The staff at Cocina had us sitting in a booth by a window eating chips within 5 minutes of our arrival! We couldn't believe how fast and courteous they were. We ordered the tableside guacamole, thinking this would be good to have because we anticipated it would be a while before our food arrived. We could not have been more wrong. Our food came quickly - hot, tasty, and everything we hoped for. What made this trip especially memorable was the staff, our waiter in particular. My wife said he made us feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant. The service was that good. Our waiter was personable, attentive, and looked like he actually enjoyed being there. This place has always been a bit of a conundrum for me. The Friday night specials were a fish fry, imitation crabmeat tacos for 12.99 and imitation crab meat enchiladas for 13.99. I've been here numerous times and keep coming back. I just can't get enough of their shrimp burrito. It's basically a shrimp fajita they wrap in a huge burrito shell. And it's INCREDIBLE. Yes, the regular table side guacamole guy is "unique," but he makes AWESOME guac. The other guy is just good enough. The salsa they give with their chips is some of the best I've had - a little tang, a little heat, and even though I'm not a fan of cilantro I don't mind it in there. You should read this and BEWARE, if you care. Ok, I really REALLY had wished that they'd STOP THIS SHORT CHANGING PRACTICE, when you pay cash. The check eventually comes after you've ordered, and if you've noticed that you might be missing some money. Here's the example and what had happened: My bill is $11.19. Although, I pay with a $20 bill, the younger girl returns my change of $8.00. I was shorted nearly a $1.00. This isn't the only business doing this either. And, I don't even mind leaving an even nicer gratuity. Sometimes upwards of 30%. But this leaves a sour grapes taste in my mouth. Call them out on it. That said, I was wanting to write an even better review here. I will say that the service was otherwise generally good. The food and drinks was good NOT great. People seem to like this Mexican though. I had the 3 tacos which was comprised of a lot of cheese (little meat) on a fresh soft flour tortilla. Margaritas are good. My family and I LOVE this restaurant. The drinks, food and service is darn great. We typically come on Sunday afternoons and leave happy and full. The staff are very friendly and although the food may take a little longer to come out (because it's cooked fresh) it's so darn delicious. We love the chips and salsa and when we splurge on the table side guac, it's delicious. I love the spinach and shrimp chili rellenos, chilaquiles and enchiladas. My husband loves the burritos and my daughter is a fan of their hot dogs and adores the green pozole, she also always enjoys trying our food. Their micheladas (with modelo) are made with care and their margaritas are top notch.
