I was really impressed with the food. We were a little bit hesitant to eat at this place because we have never gotten descent Mexican food here in the state of New Jersey. Being from Texas, this place really impressed me. The salsa was home made as well as the chips. The food and the dessert we had for dinner were great. Incredibly authentic, only jokers go to the On the Border across the street. Bring a bottle of tequila and order a pitcher of margarita mix. Not at all fancy or full of itself, just a real deal family restaurant. The people are extremely nice, prices are fair, portions are sizable and the food is great. If you've never had horchata (it's a beverage) do yourself a favor and ask for some, it's the secret to fighting spicy food and tastes like the milk from cinnamon toast crunch (in a good way). Very laid back and kid friendly. I recommend the Plattilios Jalisco con Camarones (spelling?) Basically grilled steak and shrimp in sauce with peppers and onions. I was there on Thursday, August 12. The restaurant was busy for a Thursday night. The restaurant walls were two-toned. Melon on top, a darker shade of melon on the bottom. It gave the vague illusion that I'm somewhere south of the border. There were two flat-screen televisions showing local/national sports and the Rio Olympics in the background. Chips and salsa were brought out immediately after being seated. The unsalted chips were warm and crunchy. The salsa was bland and watery. I ordered the fish tacos. My dinner was a huge plate with rice, refried beans and four fish tacos in a hard shell. The fish were moist pieces of tilapia. The refried beans were smooth. My friend ordered the carnitas. Dinner was a huge plate with rice, refried beans, guacamole, sliced beef with onions and chopped jalapenos. Flour tortillas were wrapped in foil was served with this dish. I had not been here in years and returned with friends last night. It was just ok. I felt like they give you lots of lettuce and rice but are rather frugal with the protein (in my dish, shrimp and tilapia). The chips and salsa were bland. When I lived in NJ, this was my favorite Mexican restaurant. I have not been back for several years, but finally got the chance yesterday. I was severely disappointed and disgusted with my experience. I ordered the Carnitas which was my usual when I lived in NJ. The pork tasted old and sour. The beans were flavorless and the rice was bland. My friend's chicken fajitas were stuck to the dish. The food was a disappointment, but the condition of the restaurant was appalling! My niece dropped a napkin on the floor and when we went to pick it up there was a roach in it. Once we saw that one, about 5 more crawled out from under the booth. The bathroom did not have any hot water! There was not cold water coming out of the hot knob, there was no water. The hot water pipe was not even hooked up to the sink! It made me wonder if they have hot water in the employee restroom???!!! The other bathroom's light was out, so that one was not an option. Needless to say, I will never go back and I have never written a review for any restaurant before, but I felt compelled to warn others. Hopefully, a food inspector will go soon and they can clean up the place. read more

I've been going to El Azteca since they opened over 10 years ago and I have never had a bad meal. The food is excellent and authentic and the portions are huge. My favorites are the chicken enchiladas, beef burrito, and the huevos con chorizo. The rice and beans are some of the best I've ever had. It's BYOB so if you bring your own tequila they'll mix up some margaritas for you. The free chips and salsa are delicious too! read more

Ordered the number 15 dinner combo. it says it came with a beef burrito, enchilada and tamal. what I got was three disgusting logs of beef. Basically all three dishes were just bland ground beef in a tortilla. The burrito had no beans, rice, cheese, etc. The enchilada was distinguishable from the burrito because it was slightly smaller. The Tamal thing was a little better because it had a little more flavor but the same bland ground beef was in it, so in the end it fell flat. The gf's carne asada was more fat than beef. It was a little closer to what we were expecting, but a solid portion of the beef was just large chunks of fat that were inedible. Ive had good Mexican food, but this really does not do Mexican food justice. Its as if someone described Mexican food to someone via text message and then that other person decided to open up a restaurant. When you throw in the fact that it was almost $40 for the two, I really cant recommend this place to people who enjoy good Mexican food read more

Real pour service , I'm sorry but waiter it's so rude , it's why he has to add 18% tip on 4 ppl , I work as a waiter and if you are professional you know add tip on small group of ppl its violation. Food it's ok,tacos are not tacos ( I'm Mexican so my taste it's more demanding .) I just feel really sorry this waiter has to do that , I'm usually tip 25% because I know how hard it's this , but he was very rude , and he's service was really bad. I love it here because their food is pretty authentic and always delicious. They are very affordable and I really like their combo meals because it allows you to try a few different kinds of food! I definitely suggest the chimichangas and their quesadillas are honestly the best quesadillas I have ever had ever. I REALLY wanted to like this place. I really did. When i walked in I was hopeful that the bare bones decor meant great authentic food awaited. Boy was I wrong. The best part of our meal was the chips and salsa. The guacomole we ordered was inedible -- it tasted like one of those alien jarred "green food coloring plus hydrogenated oils" food products. We couldn't find an avocado in it. The combination enchiladas platter was similarly disappointing. The cheese was ok, but the beef and chicken tasted just plain weird. The refried beans are not worth mentioning. There was some kind of "gravy" over the enchiladas that tasted fermented. The "high point" was the one part of my veggie quesadilla where the cheese actually existed. Most of the quesadilla was simply grilled onions and mushrooms folded in a tortilla. The cheese was only in a few bites near the center of the tortilla. They clearly did not spread it out when they cooked it. However, those few bites were tasty. I really wish this place had worked out as there is a dearth of good mexican in the area. I would take average at this point, but unfortunately we won't be returning. read more

This was the worst dining experience I have ever had. The waiter was very rude - first thing he said to us was hurry up and order we have a busy night. I have never experienced such rudeness at a dining experience. Also, we had to ask 4 times before he would bring us clean plates to eat our appetizers on.He rushed the whole meal (the place was not that busy for a Monday night ). For the food: Nacho appetizers were the only decent food item there. Dinner was unedible - beans tasted gross no flavor and my combination platter of tostada/enchilada/burrito was just a big pile of mush. I will never eat there again. My favorite Mexican joint. I've been going for over 10 years and have tried many of the dishes. My relatives often "drop in" for a visit just to get their takeout. I also take visiting business people there whenever possible. The "Dos Burritos Deluxe" is my absolute favorite and usually what I order. It's lots of food and very flavorful. The "El Jefe" is really good, and their "Dos Chimichangas" are delicious and so much food. I know people who get the Chile Relleno alot too. The lunch special (5 for $7) isn't amazing but a great value. Ialways leave full, and often with leftovers. And bottomless chips and salsa are complimentary. Some drawbacks are the decor, which is old, if that matters to you. On Friday and Saturday nights there are sometimes Mariachis, which may or may not be to your taste. I also sub out the beef for chicken, as I'm not sold on the flavor of their beef (personal preference). Overall their food isn't very spicy, unless you ask for that. Hot sauces on each table, however. I've had no problems with the service. read more

One star for the chips & salsa and one star for the churros.....Fruit fly problem and a piece of hair on my food to start. Staff was fake polite to " gringos" more friendly to Spanish speaking customers which I can tell because both there were in my party. Thank you for having a vegetarian section on the menu but why cant you make a veggie taco or veggie burrito? Here's a tip: it's a beef burrito without the beef....it can't be that challenging for the chef especially when you offer veggie quesadillas.
