The food is consistently delicious and made with such love and care. There's no way that you could ever have a problem, so I'm really shocked that any reviews have anything to say negative it must be clearly the person who's dining there that has issues. The place is super clean and decorated very festive. The ambience is very family oriented and very welcoming. Has multiple colors and flags and beautiful artwork on the tables. This place is bringing your own bottle or BYOB and many people come to have the Horchata where they bring their bottle of tequila and they have margaritas or pictures of delicious drinks. My husband's favorite is the jumbo burrito. He loves it, and it fills him up perfectly the Quesadilla Rellenos with chicken is so Delicious. The meat is either your choice of chicken or beef and it is so slow roasted and delicious. It is melting in your mouth good. It comes with a small side salad and all the accoutrements to make it extra creamy or extra delicious with guacamole or sour cream and a side of rice. It's perfect. Stopped in late afternoon around 3 Pm and found this location as passed by and saw the sign. Needed hot Mexican food . They have no license to serve booze so settle for lime juice drink . This was our first time coming back here after it changed ownership from El Azteca to Cocina Azteca. We came to try it again after hearing good things about it. We were not disappointed. The place isn't fancy at all but portions are huge and everything was fresh and delicious. Prices are reasonable as well. My husband counted 13 jumbo shrimp in his fajita! Wasn't thrilled with this place, sadly. I went here many years ago and don't remember it being this bad. The taco meat wasn't seasoned enough. The food itself wasn't all that good. There was one guy there doing all the tables. Granted, it wasn't that busy but he seemed overwhelmed. The ambiance is okay, but really needs to be remodeled and redecorated. Really enjoy this place! I have lived here for almost 25 years and have gone since I was a kid. Always has been reliable, and this type of Mexican & tex-mex crossover has gotten harder to find. Not here though! The dishes are large, the attention from the staff is genuine, and the vibes are perfect. Popped in to this BYOB on a Saturday afternoon and was seated immediately. The decor is vibrant and kitschy! Service was friendly and food was served fairly quickly after ordering! The appetizer of guacamole was $5.25 and came in a small bowl with the tiniest fleck of cilantro with no discernible flavors. The carnitas arrived on a huge platter and had the best flavor for $14.50. The restaurant is tired and needs refreshing. I've only been to El Azteca once, and that was to order Churros to go. While the churros were super tasty, they were hard, and I had to re-bake them for a few mins when I got home. Also, 5 sticks for $4.50 +tax seems a bit much. Only bought these for Churro Cupcakes that I was going to be making at home and used them as the 'cherry on top' of my cupcake. I've been by El Azteca (now Cocina Azteca) so many times over the years, but never came and ate here. They have take-out, or you can eat in and BYOB (so we came in with a couple six packs). No wait to be seated on a Saturday evening, either! Chips and salsa were brought out pretty quickly, and tasted really good! A bit of mild heat to the salsa, and chips tasted freshly made. Our water was also brought quickly, and refilled without us having to ask (or even really being low on water). I ordered the enchiladas verde without the meat. They didn't come with beans or rice, but they did come as a count of four. First, they brought me the wrong order (it wasn't verde, and had chicken), but then when I mentioned this, they brought the correct order super quickly). My fiancé had the jumbo burrito, and man was that thing huge! He actually didn't finish it, which never happens (though he didn't feel well the rest of the night, and thinks maybe the meat was undercooked?) My only other complaint was that we saw a girl coughing her head off on the way out, and she was waiting on tables and refilled our chips. Maybe stay at home next time if you're sick? read more

Horrible! Absolutely horrible. If you look above they are barely passing health inspections. The place looks like it hasn't been cleaned in 10 years. The guy who is always there (works the front) is rude and standoffish. He acts like he is doing you a favor by taking your order. And no one was in the restaurant. I've never before witnessed such terrible service from a place with subpar food. They won't be open much longer unless their attitude and cleanliness changes. Overall I was disappointed in the food and service. My water glass was never refilled and I only got another glass after asking for a refill long after my glass was empty. Not being Mexican and never having visited the country - I really have no idea what is authentic Mexican food and isn't authentic. That being said.... The service started with the typical chips and salsa, chips were good but the salsa left a lot to be desired. Basically just very thin tomato juice with no spice at all. I ordered a combo which included a ground beef burrito, chicken enchilada and a cheese quesadilla. The beef burrito contained exactly what it said - ground beef and only ground beef. I am used to burritos containing more, perhaps some rice, tomato, etc. and especially spices. Tasted good but could have been much better. The enchilada was tasty and had a good portion of chicken which was seasoned better than everything else. The quesadilla contained cheese and only cheese, which I believed to be fontina because of the creaminess of it, but again no tomato or seasoning of any kind, very bland. The bright spot of the entire dinner service was our server Gianna! I noticed immediately that she was rushing around like a crazy person and realized she was not only the hostess to seat us but the only server in the restaurant as well! When we were seated there were already 4 other tables seated and in the process of the dinner service. While we were waiting to place our drink order, 3 other tables were seated for dinner bringing the total to 8 tables for this one overworked waitress/hostess to be responsible for. When she came to the table for our drink order she apologized that it took longer than she thought was acceptable and said that it was only her and 1 person in the kitchen who she was also trying to help. 1 kitchen staff, 1 waitress/hostess to run a restaurant. No bus-people, no dishwashers - just the 2 of them. The owners need to take stock of their business and properly staff this restaurant, not just take the money to the bank! Back to Gianna, our server! Even being as busy as she was, everything was brought out in a timely fashion and hot. She performed a superb job! While paying our bill we also found out that she learned 2 dialects of Spanish while working here to be able to converse with the Spanish speaking staff. I nearly pass El Azteca once a week as I'm driving around my hometown and have always wondered what the food here was like. Today, I suggested this place to my group of friends and came here for lunch! When you walk into the restaurant, the first thing you'll notice is how poorly-lit the place is, but for some reason it was too much of an issue for us. We were sat down and ordered. I ate the Jefe Especial which is a chimichanga, chicken quesadilla, and rice. Man was this dish filling. Actually neither of my friends were able to finish their dishes because of their large portions! A+ there. However, the quality of the food was not the best. I didn't think either my quesadilla or chimichanga were seasoned appropriately or flavorful. It took a lot of hot sauce to make them tastier for sure. Our favorite part of the meal was probably our server who was so incredibly sweet and funny!! Overall, quantity tops quality, but maybe I'll come back for a BYO time. read more

The best Mexican food I've had in NJ! After living in the south for many years, our standards for Mexican-American food have been raised pretty high. This restaurant did not disappoint! We have been a few times now and have always left with our bellies full and leftovers for the next day, because the servings are HUGE. The fajitas are yummy and could easily be shared, even with a decently big appetite. I especially like the Vallarta Special, which is similar to fajitas, but also comes with shrimp and tilapia and has the magical white cheese dip sauce all over it. YES... We went on a Saturday night around 7 and it was packed. We were sat right away but it took a little for our order to come. It seemed there was only one waiter for some reason. He was literally rushing around the entire time we were there. Our food was piping hot though so it was worth the wait in my opinion. I don't mind a little wait knowing it is fresh and cooked to order. I got the large combo with a burrito, enchilada, and chili relleno which is my favorite. I went for lunch and I was the only customer there the entire time. When I arrived the waiter was on his cell speakerphone and just showed me my seat without an offer of drink or chips. He continued his conversation for about 5 minutes in the dining room then returned to the front and talked to another waiter. I walked out front and asked if I could order. He said I'll be there in a minute (yeah really). That was my signal to leave but I didn't have time to go anywhere else. I said I'm on my lunch hour. He still took his time and took my order including drink order (still no chips). Food came, still no drink. I ordered the fajitas and everything was thrown on the plate. Presentation was sloppy. Service is usually quick, but sometimes impersonal. Expect to be served warm tortilla chips and salsa shortly after you are seated. The salsa is usually good, but it's best earlier in the week. You can ask for salsa verde, if that's your preference. I have eaten lunch and dinner at Al Azteca countless times over the last 3 years, and my favorite dishes are their chicken burrito or carnitas meals.
