Upon entrance, the restaurant seems small but we were led into a larger dining area that is colorful, clean, and full of Mexican folk art. Our waiter promptly took our drink order and brought chips and salsa (free!). The salsa had good flavor, but a little heavy on the salt. Ordered guacamole to start and it came out very promptly. For dinner we decided to share a combination platter of enchilada, chile rellano, and burrito. The rellano was the highlight of the trio as the batter was light, it was not overly stuffed with cheese, and the flavor of the pepper was still evident. The rice was light and traditional beans were a more blended than I like, and enchilada sauce was light and zesty. We did ask for a side of the mole and it was awesome. I am confused as to how this restaurant has so many good ratings. I love to give credit when it's due but the food was nothing authentic. Absolutely nothing was homemade. And I live in a Mexican community, my closest friend is Mexican. Even for Tex Mex, it doesn't even come close. I am so disappointed. Nothing was homemade, the salsa was the kind you buy with Tostitos. The chicken soup was straight from the can they just seemed to have added some potatoes. The beans definitely from can. My friend makes refried beans daily and it doesn't come remotely close to hers. Just nasty. Oh and omg the enchiladas were stuffed with American cheese! Does not go well at all! Just nasty! We really enjoy this restaurant. They provide as many chips and as much salsa as you want without an additional fee. The chips are homemade and although I am not a chip person I also order extra salsa. They gladly accept special orders and the prices are beyond reasonable. The only reason I did not give them 4 stars is I really like spice and their dishes are mild, but they do offer sauces to kick them up a notch! read more

There was not much different than Don Pabolo's ,most Mexican food can just all taste the same but this non chain Mexican restaurant is authentic!! I had the Burrito Torrero which was AMAZING!!! The pork was really moist/flavorful, good amount of peppers & onion & the 3 different sauces were tasty. Finally, white melted cheddar cheese tops it off!!! So good! My husband and I order here all of the time. He typically orders the burrito so Aztec and I get their shrimp quesadilla. He raves about the burrito, and the quesadilla is FULL of huge shrimp and veggies. The staff is also so accomedating. I ordered take out for his birthday and forgot to mention no tomatoes and sour cream on his order. When I got there and told the cook the mistake I made he kindly took it back to make me another one. We went for a quick bite on Easter Saturday after church. Stood in the front for a while before flagging someone down and we were seated. Chips came pretty quickly. Waitress came after about 10 minutes and we asked for water for 5 and guacamole app. We also ordered our meals. Within 50 minutes, we had 4 waters (not 5) , no guac and had been out of chips for at least 20 minutes by now. We left. My mom loves this place and had raved about it for some time before finally treating me one day, and I ended up liking it so much that I took my boyfriend the next day. For almost a year, this was go-to Mexican restaurant when we needed something cheap and tasty. The prices are so great that I was willing to overlook the shoddy decor, torn seats in the booths, and the toddler you will find tearing up the dining room if you go in the evening (on one night there was a crying infant too, for ambiance I guess). I was totally willing to overlook that the guacamole is sometimes watery and way too cold, that I can never tell if I should just seat myself, and that on occasion a meal has been bland. I was willing to overlook a lot of things, because the prices and portions and never having to wait for a table were worth it. They WERE worth it, until the other day. Boyfriend and I go for a quick Sunday lunch, and our waiter (presumably one of the owners or a relative, seeing as he is ALWAYS there) was treating us like we just killed his family or something! From the moment we walked in the door, this guy was giving us tremendous attitude. It was so uncomfortable that my partner and I jokingly questioned if we were on a hidden camera show because we couldn't figure out what set this guy off. We were the first of about 5 parties to arrive at the restaurant, but consistently received everything last (strangely, we were the only ones in the dining room with this particular waiter - everyone else had a much more efficient and polite gentleman), were never checked on, and at the end of the meal found ourselves waiting FOREVER for the check. The service was absolutely terrible, and the food not much better, so we left a tip that we felt reflected the service. As we're standing at the register paying, we hear our waiter loudly and angrily speaking in Spanish in the dining room, then he comes out to us at the register, holding up his tip for us to see and says, "This isn't 15%. You're supposed to tip 15%! What is this?" We looked at him in absolute disbelief, then each other, as this guy actually points at my boyfriend's money clip, then the receipt, and demands, "You give me 2 more dollars!" So stunned, we did, and left without another word. NEVER to return. Never in my life have I heard of this really happening. I hope those 2 dollars were worth it to this guy because he will lose hundreds of dollars of our business. Never ever again. read more

What a horrific excuse for a Mexican Restaurant. We ordered take out, two orders of cheese quesadillas. They were filled with AMERICAN cheese, not just any but the individually wrapped Kraft white American. It tasted like a bland grilled cheese. Couldn't even enjoy the buttery flavor of bread seeing as it was served on a tortilla. We also ordered the queso which they call "cheese dip" this also was the white craft American cheese which I can only imagine was mixed with milk to keep it melty. Never again.... We've been going to El Azteca for several years. The food has always been better than average, and when you factor in the prices it's a good family night out. Until last night. We should have known it was going to be a different experience when while waiting for a table, we watched a 4 or 5 year old (who was a child of an employee) run his fingers in and out of the "slushy" machine nozzles, then run at the soda cooler half a dozen times yelling and screaming as he it the floor. It was a bit like going to a friends house when they don't even hear their own kids screaming. It's not the first time we've run into kids running wild here... but it's the last. After waiting 5 minutes for them to turn on the lights in the back room, we were seated. The 3 or 4 groups that were waiting with us were also seated in the back. Then the 4 year old started playing on the ramp between the rooms (guess there wasn't anyone to annoy in the lobby any more.... so go to where the crowds are). The thumping was finally stopped after a few minutes by one of the employees, as junior was sent packing to watch TV behind a curtain in the back. Two people left during the thumping. Others were probably considering it. After another 5 minute wait the server finally brought chips/salsa and took our order. I asked for a bottle opener as well. Drinks came back...but no bottle opener. Had to ask another server. Then.... we waited. And we waited. And then they finally brought us some food.... but it wasn't ours (so cruel). Finally, our order arrived. After all of that....the food was cold. I don't mean not hot....I mean COLD. I didn't even take a bite to know how cold it was... there was absolutely no heat from the plate. My tacos must have spent at least 10 minutes waiting for delivery.... probably longer. After sending it back, we decided that we didn't really want to eat there....and left. I'm sad to lose another small, owner operated restaurant from the list of places we frequent, but the little things we overlooked before have finally tipped to the side of not going back again. We'll fork over the extra $20 and head to MFF or another "less authentic" restaurant. read more

I spent the first few years after I moved to New Jersey from Georgia looking desperately for some good Tex Mex/authentic Mexican food -- All I found were chains (i.e., Don Pablo's) and REALLY authentic Mexican which, honestly, isn't my cup of tea. Then one Cinco de Mayo, when searching for a lunch place other than the Mexican Food Factory (of which I'm not a fan), I came across El Azteca!!! FINALLY!!! I've been an on-again-off-again frequent diner at El Azteca for about five years now. I've always enjoyed my meals, even when I've ventured to try the more authentic ones. By far one of my favorite items isn't on the newer menu - Mexican chicken soup - but they still have it if you ask! My last experience at El Azteca was slightly off-putting because the two/three-year old mentioned in another review climbed into our booth and proceeded to eat our chips and queso dip, but we were appeased when a fresh bowl of chips and dip arrived for us. All-in-all, this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area, and I've only had one or two disappointing experiences out of many, many wonderful ones. read more

I have fallen in love with this place! It's a wonderful little authentic Mexican restaurant hidden in a tiny little shopping center. I am giving this 4 starts for two reasons. The first is that it's a BYOB, but they charge a cork charge.The second is because I had the beef once and I did not like that at all. But I usually get something with chicken in it and it's so yummy. (Chicken quesadillas, with a side of rice and sour cream to be precise... They charge $1 for a side of sour cream, but you get a HUGE bowl of it so it's enough for the whole table.). Love the chips and salsa you get (complimentary). There is always a 15% coupon on Valpak.com which is wonderful (cannot be used Friday or Saturday). They have good lunch specials, so if you want to save a few $$, go then! The chips and salsa upon seating are amazing. I always order jalepeno poppers and they're huge! We used to get ten big ones for $4.99 but now it's only eight, still worth the money. My favorite is the chilli renenos (sp?), omg to die for! The sides are definitely good. I'm not the biggest Mexican food person but I will never turn down a chance to come here. My husband and I enjoy the atmosphere because it's not commercial, we're not big fans of chain restaurants. Call it what you will...strip-mall dive, little Mexico on Route 73 etc., but whatever you call it, El Azteca is a Mayan treasure we found in Mount Laurel. It looks like Playa del Carmen on acid on the inside, but the food is all authentic. Heck there were two tables of day laborers there, so it has to be good. The portions are HUGE, the selection GRANDE, but more important the taste is FANTASTICO. If you go, get the Queso Diablo. It's spicy, hot as Guadalajara and most importantly fresh. read more

I had the enchiladas, which is like ordering chicken parm at an Italian restaurant, and they were quite good. They were flavorful, good sized portion and looked great. My wife had a combo platter and wasn't over the moon with it. Now the issues......the salsa. Kinda important at a Mexican restaurant. It was very tomatoey...not sure how else to describe it. Almost marinara sauce like and not very salsa like. The chips were a little overbaked. Sorry, but you have to deduct a ton of points when they don't get the chips and salsa right. The beans and rice have to be ordered separately, as its ala carte. They were very plain tasting......actually had more flavorful rice and beans at chain Mexican restaurants. The ambiance of the restaurant is very authentic and welcoming. Their service was very good, however we were one of 3 tables so if the service was poor, there would have been no excuse. This is a place I really want to like. By default I guess they survive and do well only because the choice in the "non chain, Mexican" category is about as sparse as finding Republicans in Vermont. Bottom Line: I hate to say it, but overall, Don Pablo's and On the Border has this place's number. If one of them is closer, don't waste the extra gas to get to El Azteca. It's a very forgettable experience. This gringo won't be running back soon. read more
