If you want authentic Mexican flavors then try this place. They don't have Michelin chefs cooking up the dishes they have something way better, and that's tias and Abuelas getting the food prepared with so much love and care. The cafe de olla was amazing with the scent being so inviting that you could taste it as you were smelling it! They had tacos de papa and nopales which are my two favorite things that take me back to mi abuela's rancho. Went here yesterday for dinner and I'm glad we found this little restaurant in Ceres. The food was very authentic and tasty. The micheladas were awesome with an orange hanging from the side rather than aimed. Refreshing! Also they used homemade chamoy before adding the tajin to the rim. It was delicious. The chips and salsa were out of this world. They provided the tables a delectable green salsa with what I'm going to say were fresh homemade chips. Serving size was small but they had no issues bring more when asked. We had a couple of appetizers, the taquitos which were filled with potatoes - yummy, then we had the grilled corn with all the yummies which if you don't know what that means order it and you will not be disappointed. I could have eaten all be myself. For dinner I had a mulita with nopales and cheese. Again I believe the tortillas were made there, excellent. And my dining buddy had the carne asada. Beans and rice awesome. Customer service pretty good. They checked on us regularly and answered any questions I had. I always ask random questions regarding the food I put in my body. I was told the restaurant had been there for about 2 years. Last thing the ambiance inside made me feel ike I was on vacation in Mexico. And yes you heard right we can eat inside! It wasn't very busy for a Saturday but a few regulars I would guess and a few dinner pick ups so I think the locals are keeping this place under their hats. Doesn't look like much when you walk past, but I was practically dying to pee so I popped in. I was driving to Visalia and couldn't hold It ..Been the great human being that I am I couldn't just pee N leave !The definition of a hole-in-the-wall. I got the flautas de papa and wow. there are no words . Initially they said 10 to 15 minutes and I wasn't about to wait for that so I asked how long for taco she asked to cook and they said they could have the flautas in five minutes.... We'll they kept there word. These were exactly what I needed. Tim Duncan NEW We went to the Sunday Buffet Brunch on Father's Day, that was highly recommended by some reviewers.. we were sorry we went and wasted the $60 + for two Buffets. The food was horrible. The tortillas apparently were freshly made but tasted like cardboard and fell apart, worse than store bought. Chile Colorado was just full of bones with a little meat. The taco station meat was flavorless and pretty cold. The deserts were pathetic and tiny the worst flan I ever had and was no more than one bite each . You had to get your own soda and it was just coke in a can. They had eggs but no omlets. If this is authentic Mexican food then it must be from an authentic Mexican who didn't know how to cook. The service was ok, but who cares when literally everything else was the worst. read more

This small restaurant seems to be in an area that has a small town feel with other eateries. Since COVID 19 is upon us, we seem to be the only patrons which suited us just fine because we were able to sit and enjoy a meal instead of to go as we travel. Once inside, it was clean and quaintly decorated with small artifacts from Mexico. We were greeted by a sweet and friendly waitress named Vanessa. Who, although was wearing a mask, could not hide the smile from her eyes. She took our order and complimented our choices. I must admit that I knew what to order based previous Yelpers (thank you very much)! We started with the complimentary chips with mole which is certainly different than your normal salsa. I'll talk about the mole later. We followed that by the complimentary tortillas soup. The soup had a smokey flavor which I accredited to chipotle but could be wrong on the type of chile. It had smoke crunchy tortillas chips that maintained their crunchy texture throughout the whole time you were savoring it. We then ordered the corn,cheese, puéblanos chile appetizer which was served with the handmade tortillas. The gooey goodness was actually a little filling. For our main course entree, that's right boys and girls we're not done eating, I had to try the moladas because the chips with mole were so delicious that I had to try it this way. They did not disappoint with their rich smooth taste of chocolate and Chile. The tortillas hecha de mano were stuffed with tender white chicken breast covered in this slightly sweet mole served with a side of rice. My husband had the chicharrón con chile verde. Let me tell you that the grandmother in the kitchen -lol I really don't know who was the cook but I'd like to think it was some old lady who had been cooking forever since she was a little girl with her grandmother. Any way, she can cook. These chicharrones were not fatty or heavy (the way that they can be) were smothered in this green salsa that had tons of flavor with the overpowering heat. They were super tasty! The last thing I'm going to rave about is their agua frescas because those too were yummy. My husband had the pineapple with spinach that right spinach. Don't knock it till you try this refreshing drink. I had the horchata which was also tasty without the graininess that can be in some rice water. So as you could guess, I totally recommend. Went in with my family for Saturday breakfast and found out they do a buffet also, the people at the front were so nice and even gave us a tour of the buffet to see if we were interested. We went with the buffet; I had the chilaquiles verdes, chilaquiles con salsa cacahuate, some asada tacos and a birria taco. All part of the buffet and all delicious. The people serving the buffet food were insanely nice and answered any questions in English or Spanish. Environment was super family friendly and welcoming music 10/10 ! read more

1st time trying this Mexican Restaurant out. I wanted to love this place so bad because the service and the friendliness of the staff was so good. I loved their Frida decor! Most of the family was excited to try their cafe de olla, but it had a bitter taste. Not sweet at all and they add piloncillo. I enjoyed my horchata and their conchita bread was also very fluffy and delicious. Unfortunately, everything else we ordered lacked flavor and spice... from the beans, rice, meat and salsa! The reviews on Yelp rave about their buffet option. It definitely sounded appealing, but when we got there to check it out they didn't have many dishes that caught our attention so we decided to order from the menu instead. The bill was also totally unexpected. For a family of 6 it came out to $196. Do not order avocado nor nopales if it's not included in the dish. The custom price for that is ridiculous. The service fee was 18%. We didn't get an option to choose how much... it was just included in the bill.... Which we didn't mind paying for because the service was very good. Super cute Mexican restaurant in the heart of Ceres. Once you come in the hostess will ask if you'd like the menu or buffet style dining. We went for the menu but will most likely opt for buffet next time. What the server didn't asked was if we wanted to sit indoor or outdoors. We did not know they had an outdoor patio and it was a beautiful day. This is the reason I'm giving this place only 4 stars. I think they have to step up a notch on customer service. Maybe it's just mainly locals visiting and they know what they want or where they want to sit. But for first timers, it would've been nice to know our options. Anyhow, we both ordered chilaquiles. I had the green ones and my friend had the red ones. We both ordered coffee and we're pleasantly surprised with its traditional presentation. The coffee was delicious and so was the small piece of pan dulce that came with it. Their chips and salsa were really good. And overall we had a good experience. The waitress only came once to check on us and we even had to signal to some other lady to bring us our check. We were traveling down HWY 99 wanting something super easy, quick and tasty. Cocina Azteca was all of this and more. For starters, it's LITERALLY steps from the freeway. Like, we pulled off the exit, came fo the stop sign and there it was. You couldn't find a more centrally located stop. It also helps that it's on Main Street so if you are even remotely curious about the town of Ceres.... well here you go. You made it to Main Street AND good food all in one swoop. The decor and layout is simple, but also clearly an effort is made to be different and true to Aztec. We liked that it seemed someone said "how can we decorate our restaurant to be unique, and stand apart from the million other taquerias yet still be 100% Mexican?" Even the plates & bowls were Mexican pottery (so it seemed). Now about the food- instead of the typical chips & dip, we were presented chips & MOLÉ!!! Which was fantastic! To be fair, we don't have molé all the time to know if it was the best molé, but it was pretty darn tasty and really different and we liked it. Also, we were served complimentary tortilla soup- home made fresh in house. The broth was amazing! So, my husband ordered the chicharones & chili verde and thought it was excellent- it came with house made fresh hot tortillas (also great) and I ordered the Enchilada bowl- which is another thing that was cool- they had a whole salads & bowls option, so if you are Keto or Whole 30 or Atkins or Gluten free or whatever you are, you can order the bowl or the salad and feel a tiny bit more healthy. My Enchilada bowl was fantastic. We also got ice teas and it was cool how the waitress brought us a carafe of it alongside the full cup of ice- no need to ask/demand/fight for refills, it's just already there waiting in the carafe and it glowed with freshness. The waitress was very sweet and attentive, friendly. She also alerted us to upcoming events and specials at the restaurant, which is always so refreshing to have employees be knowledgeable and care about good business. It's Valentines Day and my husband and I have a 3 week old newborn, so we wanted to avoid the craze of trying to book a reservation we opted to find a place go grab brunch. Cocina Azteca was actually our "plan c" as our first two options fell through. We were just driving through Ceres back to Manteca and I opened Yelp in a last ditch attempt to find somewhere nice go eat and decided to give this place a shot--it's our new favorite spot! The cafe de olla was the best I've ever had and the presentation was so cute. They brought out sopita as our appetizer, which was a great change from chips and salsa. My husband got chilaquiles with a size of steak and cleaned his whole plate. I got the breakfast burrito with papas, chorizo, and beans and the flavors were incredible. The horchata was made from scratch and presented beautifully as well. The service was outstanding and we were checked on several times. If you are hungry in the Merced to Modesto area, Cocina Azteca is the spot for super tasty Mexican food! I came in with a friend for their Dia de los Muertos event on a Saturday night around 8. They were having a blast with a huge buffet spread and the best entertainment. Lots of seating, which was mostly taken by local families, and some bar style seating where we settled. The food was so awesome, very autentico (authentic) central to southern Mexican, and felt homemade (which it might have been due to the buffet). I was a bit overwhelmed with the options, two types of tacos, one with chicken, potato and a slightly spicy sauce and onions, another with more chicken and chiles with a lovely sauce. I can be a bit skittish about meat in tacos, but this was so well prepared I just dove in and never regretted it. Rice and beans were tasty, and the tamale options were great. I tried the mole chicken filled one, which was a bit chocolaty for my taste but the masa more than made up for it, so smooth and melty. They had pineapple sweet tamales which are quite a rare treat. Expansive salsa and topping options as well. The highlight was the music, decorations and all the face-painted patrons and staff. They had a catrina procession of those with face paint like skulls and included a couple gentlemen. The little girl in white was the clear winner, and she got $15 as a reward. They also had a performer who impersonated both a voluptuous diva and a serenading hombre (Juan Gabriel) to bachata and ranchera classics. So much fun I wish I could sing along! This place is good! I am kicking myself for living in Ceres for 8 years and never really heading towards downtown to eat. When we first moved Downtown looked abandoned and nothing stood out the buildings were ugly just overall underwhelming. Coming from a big City to a town is a complete culture shock to say the least. Point is we finally decided to give Downtown Ceres another chance since we enjoyed eating at Loza I believe that's how it's spelled if not (so sorry). I love Flautas and this place makes it delicious. Only downside they don't give you enough frijoles and especially rice, but I'm probably being gluttonous. My husband had something like agadas anyway whatever it was it was so good and he enjoyed every bite. La agua de Jamaica so refreshing and served in these beautiful tall Mexican ceramic cups. Parking was easy and we were greeted and shown to our seat right away. We chose to order from the menu rather than have the buffet (next time) and I ordered a cafè de olla which was so good it touched my soul .. not to mention it is served with a little concha. My husband chose a margarita which he also enjoyed. They brought chips and fresh salsa which was perfectly prepared to perfection. For breakfast I chose the chilaquiles verdes and he had the machaca. This place is incredible! Tucked away in a cute little area in Ceres that I didn't even know existed. The food appears to be authentic. I had the enfrijoladas, which I've never had before. It's essentially an enchilada but with beans/bean sauce on the outside instead of enchilada sauce. It tasted great! They had a lunch buffet going on while I was there and it looked awesome.
