Coastal Baking Company is a new family run restaurant on Mason Avenue, the main street of Cape Charles. It's a small place, with only 2 tables and 4 chairs, so most people will take out. The decor is very clean and inviting - it's easy to walk out with more than you planned on. Despite it's small size, there's a wide variety of food! They have fresh bread daily - asiago, 7 grain, rustic baguette, and multi-grained croissants. They have several types of coffee, including Cafe Du Monde from New Orleans. Their sweets are outstanding! They have a wide variety of cakes, pies, muffins, croissants, mini bundts, and cookies, and they're all good. They're attractively displayed in glass cases, and hard to resist, particularly after you try one of the samples that they usually have out. Their sandwiches are huge and generally good for two meals. The bread is fresh and the sandwiches are stacked so high that they're hard to get into your mouth. My wife and I have had the Italian, Turkey, Chorizo, Pimento Cheese, and a special Mediterranean, and they were all exceptional - lovingly prepared with the freshest ingredients. Friends have given the Muffeletta rave reviews - I'm planning on trying it next. With the clean, appealing decor, friendly staff, and wide variety of outstanding food, Coastal Baking Company is a welcome addition to the Cape Charles restaurant scene! read more

This place is gem! The girls behind the counter are friendly and so helpful. While in Colonial Williamsburg we over heard a group of people raving about this bakery. I GPS'd it and it was 1.5hrs away... i said to myself they had to of stopped while traveling. So we adjusted our drive home to Connecticut to purposely stop at this bakery! THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! The cinnamon roll, the cran/orange muffin, the almond croissant and the coffee were divine! We even grabbed some extra for family at home to try! Highly recommend this bakery! read more

Sorry but I have never been impressed by much at this place, I honestly think because it is only one of 2 "bakeries" on the shore it gets a lot of traffic. We ordered a cake for my mother's birthday and spent near $100 for it! I have honestly gotten way better baked goods from a Publix or Wegman's!! The food and coffee is not bad, just not worth the price IMO. I have not tried their sandwiches yet but heard they are good from other's. read more

We were camping at the state park nearby and found this through Yelp. My 4 year old son got a donut and really enjoyed it. My 8 year old daughter got a cinnamon bun and she thought it was really good. My wife and I also enjoyed it. We also got the biscuits and gravy and it was very tasty. I got a blueberry scone and it was good but a little too hard for me. We got ham biscuits for the kids but it was just biscuits with a slice of ham in the middle. No one ate these as we all enjoyed the other food and did not have space for these. read more

1st visit and we're already looking forward to our next! My wife had the curry chicken salad on naan and I had the Italian on a rustic baguette. After sampling a bite of each other's, we had to share. The curry chicken was incredibly flavorful, with big chunks of tender chicken with a hint of tamarind on a soft piece of naan...so good! My Italian sandwich had delicious slices of salami, ham and provolone and great bread can make or break a sandwich. The baguette had a great crust, but was tender inside...absolutely delicious sandwich! To cap off our meal, we enjoyed their coconut macadamia cookies. Everything was so great, we stopped by to get another loaf of bread and a couple more cookies to take home. Finally, the owner/baker and her team were very friendly and helpful- Thank you! read more

Such an unexpected surprise! I went here with friends over the weekend for lunch & it was great! All the bread is made in house (and incredible!) I ordered the Curry chicken salad with homemade naan & my husband ordered the crab gumbo & both were excellent. The owners were incredibly accommodating & kind. I am from Chesapeake, but will definitely be taking a day trip to come back for lunch. 100% recommend. read more

We spent one night in the Cape Charles area and were disappointed that many of the area restaurants were not doing take out even though it was advertised. We still weren't comfortable eating inside with the Covid situation so we're very glad to stumble on Coastal Baking! We had a takeout lunch of two sandwiches, wonderfully packed so we took them to the beach for a picnic. We were very impressed with the freshness and the precautions they were taking so returned in the morning for breakfast. Everything we had was delicious and highly recommended! read more

So, we stopped here during our Cape Charles stay based on the reviews (granted there were only 9 at the time) and I was very underwhelmed. While the baked goods were fresh, the selection was extremely small and the prices were not cheap ($2 for a basic sprinkle doughnut and $4+ for a 3x3 piece of crumb cake). We tried a couple of different crumb cakes and got doughnuts for the two kids. While they had a decent flavor, none were something I felt the need to come back again for - so we didn't. read more

I have now tried this bakery three times. Twice for custom order cakes and once for a take out order. All left some to be desired. The vanilla butter creams are too sweet and texture of the cake is a little spongy. Takeout slice of cake was too dry to eat and ended up in the trash. Stopped in for lunch after a local recommendation and was not disappointed. We had the pastrami and chicken salad sandwiches - both were excellent! Sides were very tasty. This family-owned business is the perfect addition to Cape Charles. Kind, courteous, professional, and on top of that, absolutely delicious pasties, lunches and desserts. The cranberry nut cookie and the harvest cookie are so ridiculously good that I don't stray too far from them when I go in; well aside from the Coconut Smith Island Cake. The place is perfect. Cassie and family are friendly to everyone and the food. Oh my. The menu looked delicious but I went with the special. It did not disappoint. This couple (and their sons) know their cooking! Happily spend $70-$90 here every two weeks on specials (the Green Gumbo is the best!), sandwiches (curried chicken salad on flatbread), and excellent homemade Florentine Mac casseroles. The muffins and crumb cakes are definitely the best pastry items. I think the only thing that needs work is the coffee. I like mine vibrant and flavorful. They need a proper espresso machine and barista, or a local to get them freshly roasted coffee daily and some practice with a Chemex at the very least. They're always busy, even in the non-fishing season. You cannot go wrong spending decent money for lunch and take-home dinner here. Before long, they'll need a bigger shop for sure. read more

I ordered a chocolate Smith Island cake for my husband's birthday and it was AMAZING! The owner was quick to respond when I had questions about my order even after business hours! Yum! This place is great! It was def worth waiting in a small line to get in, as they only allow a few people in at a time due to covid guidelines. My husband and I got the biscuits and gravy and the ham biscuits-- they were delicious! If you're looking for breakfast, it ends at 10:30 so I recommend getting there a little ahead of time to make sure you get into the store by then. This is the charming, small town bakery that dreams are made of! There are so many beautiful cookies, cakes (including Smith Island!!) and pies that it's hard to know what to choose. They also offer sandwiches and New Orleans inspired entrees. I had the shrimp etouffee and honestly could not believe how good and authentic it was. The owner is extremely warm and welcoming. If you are in the mood for excellent food from a spot other than a "greasy spoon" or a "fast food" place then you need to try this quaint place. I own a home on the Eastern Shore and stopped here for the first time on Friday. The owner was extremely friendly and made recommendations to aid me in my food selection. My choice was a Chicken Salad Sandwich with a side of potato salad. Both were excellent and I look forward to lunch again here in the near future. While I was in the restaurant the owner told me they were going to sell flights of pie slices of the pies they would be offering for Thanksgiving. I returned early Saturday Morning and purchased a Pie Flight. The flight consisted of a Chocolate Pecan, Burbon Pecan, Cranberry Cheescake Pie and Salted Honey Pie. All were top knot had but My favorite was the Salted Honey, a pie I had never heard of before. I will be ordering one for the Holidays. read more
