The Coast to Coast Full English - Complete with Oreo!?!
    Simon S.

Breakfast Review: Its an American styled restaurant. The breakfasts are quite unusual. The venue is on Broad Street in Birmingham, its a cracking venue, right in the middle of Birmingham's number one 'going out' street. Its really cool inside too - like a massive diner - which I imagine is the point? I did find it weird that every time I have been in there, they seem to be showing horse racing on the TV's?! You get a generous portion: 2 Sausages, 2 Bacon, 2 fried eggs, a whole roasted tomato, black pudding, beans, (mine were separate - its a thing I do), potato cake and for some inexplicable reason, a mini Oreo? In fairness to the restaurant, when we turned up, I believe there were about 15 of us, so its not really fair to expect everyone to have a perfect breakfast. That said, it was pretty impressive, everything was OK, but I didn't think that the ingredients were particularly good. It could be worth 4 stars, but I am comparing this breakfast against the others I have tried, (about 35 to date), and it wasn't enough for me to merit the 4th star. I couldn't fault the service either. It was excellent.

Mac and cheese balls were tasty though

Ive visited Coast 2 Coast now 4 times. Based on my last two experiences I won't be going back for the food. This is an 'American themed' restaurant. Think burgers, ribs, sizzling fajitas. It has a lengthy cocktail menu with a decent happy hour between 5 and 7. You can mix and match 2 for 1. I've found the bar staff lack consistency. Sometimes my drinks will come out superb. Other visits the drinks have missed half the garnish. What disappoints me the most is the price of the food for what you receive. Two salads I have tried both came out the size of a starter salad..and for £13 each!!! The burgers come with a pathetic amount of chips. Looks like a McDonald's happy meal instead of a juicy restaurant burger and chips. I will say the calzone and puddings are what I would consider a normal portion size. Service seems to be hit or miss. Most recent visit it was nearly ten minutes before someone took our drink order. And it wasn't busy time. Coast 2 Coast is great for cocktails if the bar isn't slammed, diasspointing for food, and gives lackluster service. There's better places out there.

Ok food ok service, could do a lot better quite easily. 2 mistakes on our order but our waiter was a really nice guy and he said it was his 3rd shift. Go for burgers, they are excellent - the buffalo sauce was very weak but the burger itself good. Home made nachos to start were ok and fully loaded but the frickles were so good.

    Bar lamps are too low!

Wow! To start £5 a pint and £12 for nachos. Questioned on arrival and told we couldn't eat in the bar and all the tables were full (but eventually they graciously accepted our money), had to ask for the big NFL game which they knew nothing about and then were unable to show (even though they advertise it, they don't subscribe to sky sports 3), one of the bar staff was particularly rude, the bar lamps add ambience but obscure the two TV screens in the bar. Had the feeling of a superficial American restaurant, rather than one with any soul. Hopefully, it's teething problems because the interior is really nice and it could be an absolute gem. (Mistakenly posted this on the Solihull branch of this change but it is for the Broad Street, Birmingham restaurant)

I'm not convinced enough to try and dinner at this branch yet. They were kind enough to host 40 instagrammers on a Saturday afternoon and give us a free lemonade and cocktail off the menu. The service was very friendly and our waiter made a grand effort with us. We were given mini pretzels to sample. I have previously had more than one great family meal at Touchwood in So it makes me wonder why people are not saying the same great things about this branch. Is it just not unique enough for a big city with lots and lots of different types of food?

A lovely chardonnay in the bar whilst we waited for our table! #Delicious

Went to Coast to Coast for the first time last night with my husband and 2 children aged 15 and 10. It was 18.15 when we finally arrived after struggling to book a table via the online booking system and not getting a response by phone. 1. Friendly door staff extremly welcoming. 2. We were told we could have a 45 minute wait, so we had the buzzing device and went to the bar. The bar is huge with a great selection of Cocktails, spirits, wines and beers. There is ample space, loved the way the bar hugged around, great atmosphere, great music (Disco/Motown/80s) I was in my element . 3. The buzzer went off alot sooner than anticipated and we were shown to our table which was a both on the main teir looking down on everyone else. (Royalty) 4. Our waitress was helpful but looked tired - my son ordered from the junior menu which is near the back of the main menu which was helpful and made him feel included. 5. The food came out timely, hot, and well presented. 6. All the staff that came to our table had good customer service, the floor manager came with my daughters meal that was slightly later and was professional and apologetic. 7. The music.. it wasnt just me, we all enjoyed it and laughed and sung along (we do things like that) lol. When Shannon - 'Let The Music Play' came on I wanted to get up and have a boogie . (We loved the tunes). 8. We had an amazing night! Coast to Coast is an American themed restaurant so if your looking for Michelin 5* with the ambience to suit its not the place. But if your looking for a place to hang out with friends family eat drink get merry and enjoy a buzzin atmophere I would recommend it. As we left my daughter said, "mum can we go there again?" And before going to bed she gave me a hug and said " I have had a lovely evening" now, that goes a long way for me. Just my opinion of course

Review Highlights - Coast To Coast

I don't mind paying for good food but the best part of £15 for a burger that didn't come close to the best I've had seems way too high.

The staff in here are excellent. I asked them to make me a non-alcoholic cocktail last night and was whipped up a gem for the eyes and tastebuds. However, again, if you don't get here in Happy Hour and want a cocktail - you're paying from £6.00+ - so not a cheap option for a night out. Last time I ate here (Booking is a must by the way, if you want to eat!), I had the Sea bass with Sanphire - which was fabulous. The Ginger cake dessert was lovely too. The lunch menu is quite reasonable (and there is a loyalty card scheme - meaning you can earn a free lunch if you eat out regularly). A MUST for Gin fans. Good for a night out with the girls or the start of a big night out. Aim for Happy Hour and keep in mind Thursday/Friday/Saturday is VERY busy (but - top tip - you can reserve tables in advance).

I have yet to try the food, so this review is reflective of the cocktails. The bar staff here are expert craftsmen. Every cocktail is made to perfection. The menu rotates seasonally, so enjoy a favorite until you pick a new favorite. If you like gin, this is the place for you. There is more gin on offer than I've ever seen in one place before. The upstairs even boasts a gin lounge with yet more selection. The deliciousness is in the details. Jekyll & Hyde made use of fun flavored alcohols, syrups, juices, herbs and spices. Each cocktail is shaken, stirred or muddled to be an explosion of flavor in your mouth and served up in a perfectly paired glass to suit. My first favorite drink here was called the Puss Puss Meow Meow. Served in a delicate tea cup, this drink was sweetie cute and oh so yummy. A fruity, fragrant concoction with floral gin notes. On the new menu I'm smitten with Strawberry Laces - served up with little twizzles of strawberry laces. Absolutely delicious. Also check out the French Connection - a warming drink which makes use of saffron gin and cinnamon. It tastes like a Sunday afternoon drifting through the warm countryside. The decor is well thought out and the tables and stools are adjustable for a pair or large group. It looks like a typical pub outside and is anything but inside.

My friend is entirely obsessed with the Peaky Blinders series, so requested that we checked here out on our Birmingham jaunt. I didn't google or yelp it beforehand, and how I wish that I had! I had imagined a carefully researched themed bar, era appropriate, speak easy vibe, and maybe something special occurring with the final series imminent. However, what we got was cheaply dressed mannequins, t-shirts and waistcoats, oddly placed graffiti, a very run of the mill bar and the weirdest karaoke selection I think I've ever experienced (good on the woman singing Nightwish- 13 year old me would have been very happy, not perfectly executed though, shall we say). It all felt a bit *too* local, which I expect is amazing if you are, mind, and it seemed weird to me that the "speakeasy" behind the big bookshelf was closed on a Saturday night on a bank holiday weekend? It entirely feel like they've simply dibsed a name and tried to cash in on the popularity of the series, with the minimum effort that they could manage. I had themed parties as a skint student that I reckon had a greater budget and craft than this. It's a real shame as it almost stops an amazing one coming along and doing a better job. It's a laugh, but nothing more unfortunately.

I therefore had to give this place a try before I left - especially being a fan of The Peaky Blinders. I had passed by this place a few times when it was known as Confessions and it never really enticed me in. So, this time I was more hopeful! Stepping through the door your attention is drawn to the friendly looking bar tender dressed in (roughly) Peaky Blinder style hat. The next thing I noticed was a mannequin also dressed (roughly) Peaky Blinder style. Now for some the mannequins could be considered bizarre, I however am from a small town which considers one of its prime tourist attractions to be a shop decorated with very bizarre looking mannequins! There are a few more of these mannequins type things around the place adorned with a flat cap, and accompanied by instructions not to touch and that offenders will be instructed to leave! The bar area itself is one average size room, it was relatively clean and populated by older gentlemen of varying mental capacity. There was at least one sat alone having a full conversation with himself. The bar itself had nothing special to offer, just the usual bulk items, Carling, Strongbow (original and forest fruits) and Guinness. A simple selection of bottles were stocked in the fridges, the best of which seemed to be bottles of Magners. As for the "Peaky Blinder" theme. Well, I was pretty disappointed. This clearly just an attempt to cash in on the show, with very little actual connection. A few cap clad mannequin's and few pictures on the wall which seem to be screen grabs from the show. So much more could be made of the theme which would no doubt attract loyal fans. This place just doesn't cut it as a themed venue. Its an OK pub but that's about all it is.

Old Joint Stock is well known for their pie and ale combos, including a cute 3 and 3 tray sampler of each. The pie flavors available Friday just didn't stand out for me, so I tried their gnocchi and a glass of tempranillo (full-bodied red from Spain) instead. The food was a solid 4 stars. The ambiance and drink were 5 stars. The gnocchi had good subtle potato flavor and the texture was a standard slightly chewy pasta that I've come to expect outside of Italy and the Italian enclaves of New York. I'm always searching for more melt in your mouth pillowy gnocchi, but this was a solid representation of standard gnocchi. The gnocchi was served in a creamy tomato vodka sauce and topped with fresh local mozzarella and a garnish of greens. The portion was very filling and well worth the price. The tempranillo was wonderfully full-bodied with a lovely balance of fruitiness and spice. I like that Old Joint Stock offers wine in small and large glasses or by the bottle. I chose the large glass, which is plenty to accompany dinner and dessert, if you somehow have room for dessert. The dessert menu looked amazing - I'm definitely going back to try something. Old Joint Stock offers a luxurious old-world charm that just beckons you to come spend an evening enjoying good food and drink. The church library, turned bank, turned pub has kept it's original splendor in tact, with heavy brocaded draperies, faux marble walls, high painted ceilings, and antique seating arrangements. The management have chosen gorgeous lighting to accent the walls and glass dome over the bar, which is central to the restaurant. I entered feeling like a glitzy party guest and left warm and full.
