We really liked this place! For the three of us, the total was less than $50, which felt like a great price. I ordered Lucy's pulled pork, and it was delicious! The fries were also really good, you could tell they weren't frozen or sitting around for too long. My friend ordered the tacos, and she really liked them. The only thing was that they were a little sweet for her taste. My other friend ordered the Coach's Plate with two meats, and he was very satisfied with his meal. They both really liked the mac and cheese and the green beans as well. The place was nice and clean, the service was warm and friendly, and our food came out pretty quickly. Barbeque is one food category that I am fairly picky on and it is hard to get a high rating from me since I am well traveled in Texas and have sampled some of the finest that Texas BBQ has to offer. Today, I ate at Coach's Bar-B-Que in McGregor, TX, right off of US 84. Coach's has been there for a while and is a local favorite. This was not my first visit, but it is a place I often stop when I an in the area. This is your typical Texas BBQ joint with a few twists. They apparently have a broad selection of other dishes. I have heard they make a mean pizza and that the catfish is worth the try. The service is warm and friendly, but the real treat of Coach's is the memorabilia scattered throughout the restaurant. From Texas license plates of every age to a collection of football helmets, it make the place feel lived in with history to back it up. There is ample seating indoors and out, with a large covered patio available at the front where you enter. Today, I selected a three meat plate with Brisket, Sausage and Ribs, along with their Campfire Beans and some Fried Okra. Again, it is hard to impress me with barbeque, but I will compliment the Brisket for being moist, tender with a good smoke ring. They use a traditional Texas style seasoning, simple salt and pepper, and the smoke was well infused through out the meat. Their Regular Sausage was well flavored, if a bit dry, with a nice black pepper finish, giving it a good pep at the end. It was the Ribs that I was a bit disappointed in. While well flavored and ample in size, they were a little tougher than I remember them being in the past. The Fried Okra was a bit of a let down too. While crunch and fresh when it came out, there was just not much flavor to the side dish. The real star of the plate by far was the Campfire Beans, a traditional style of barbeque baked beans, enhanced my trimmings of chopped brisket in the mix. Those could have been a meal unto themselves. If you are in the area of McGregor, check out Coach's. It is not a bad experience by far, but it is not one of the Texas legends either. read more

I've had this place and it's been decent not amazing but still good. Today was absolutely horrendous. Pictures are the tale of the tape you decide. Usually ok food but I did not eat this. Asked for fresher cuts and it was a little better. Only reason it's not a 1-Star review. I hope they fire whoever thought it was ok to put this subpar food on a customers plate. Great bbq joint in McGregor Texas. You can tell it's great by the plethora of locals who are visiting here during lunch. The pricing here is not out of this world like some other BBQ joints. They are very reasonably priced for BBQ. As for the meats they are delicious! Everything we ordered was smoked well, and you could see the smoke ring in the brisket. I do have to say that the brisket, ribs and ham were my favs. The BBQ sauce was pretty tasty as well and went well with everything. The sides were normal BBQ sides, nothing really blowing my mind on that one. As for the service the lady at the counter was very friendly and explained it all to me as to what was what. Super nice. The atmosphere here is of a local hole in the wall BBQ joint. You see local high school helmets. Wooden floors and chairs, tables. You can tell this place has been here for a while. They are not trying to be fancy, they are a trying to be a BBQ joint in a small Texas town. I have to say they are delivering on that. Overall a great BBQ experience. The place was decent! Typical counter barbecue place. It was not busy only 4 other people in the place. Service was okay not overly friendly and just didn't seem to care like we were bothering her. The barbecue nothing special and was not hot, my French fries were also cold. Sliced brisket was the best. The pulled pork and turkey really dry. I had to put barbecue sauce on it. my three meat plate had a poor taste. It was the most terrible experiences my potatoe salad were undercook and hard. I got beef ribs believe they were microwave before served to me. My sausage was kind of hard like when you microwave it. The sliced beef was very dryied and tasteless my expereience should have been a lot better but I guess it wasn't my luck. I didn't like the restaurant charging me $25 for left overs best thing was that $5 peach cobbler it was delicious. The place has a nice atmosphere, but wasn't busy at all. I had brisket slices with mayo potato salad & fried okra. The sides were your typical store-bought type sides with the okra undercooked & mushy/chewy. I expect brisket to be fatty to some extent, but the fat in my slices took up Half of each slice. I didn't get near as much sliced brisket as my husband got on his sandwich. The 'homemade' peach cobbler had a bitter taste, no sweetness to it at all. And no ice cream. We drove 1 hour to try this place out. Every-time we are in Texas we try a new BBQ place. This was probably the worst BBQ we've had. The ribs were so salty and dry. I couldn't eat them. The brisket was dry also but had a good smoking flavor. The Mac and cheese was just ok, the peach cobbler was really good and the cole slaw was good. BBQ sauce was really good. Jalapeño sausage my husband said was average. Very disappointing, we threw the food away. Could not eat the ribs or brisket. I would not come here again. Bottom Line: Good to excellent food from friendly folks in a casual setting. Top Line: For dinner at Coach's Smoke in McGregor TX I ordered a sliced beef brisket sandwich, beans, cole slaw, and sweet tea. The meal came to a touch over $10 after tax. So that's some pretty cheap eats! The sides were fairly typical. The cole slaw was juicy, sweet with almost no vinegar tang at all, a faint hint of pepperiness, and crunchy though not crispy. The bean's had the usual cumin & black pepper flavors, with the bit of heat coming from the black pepper. The bean's texture was a bit firmer & chewier than normal. I especially noted that the bean skins were thicker than most I've bumped into, so gave a coarser feel to the dish. The sweet tea was passable and pretty much like that found in any number of other eateries. The smoked beef brisket sandwich was definitely the star of the show. It was heavily smoked and had a wonderfully rich taste. The outer bark had a very authoritative note & sharp attack, which is a good thing in my world. The smoke seemed to have permeated the meat much deeper than other brisket I've had, like the complete smoke penetration exhibited by country hams (not those pale water-added grocery store hams!). The smoke flavor of Coach's brisket was playing front, center, and strong. The brisket's texture was a smidge drier than some, but still plenty moist. It was absolutely tender. The bun was usual sturdy white bread bun that held up well to the sauce in the sandwich. Coach's had little corn meal muffins, so I tried one. It was sweeter in taste and finer in texture than most. I can understand why the tub was mostly empty. The staff were all friendly & welcoming. The setting is rustic & low key. Outside seating for warm weather. Sign on the door indicates that they are in process of getting a beer license. They are also expanding their kitchen facility, so changes are on the way. So if you're passing through McGregor TX, stop on into Coach's casual joint for some real fine BBQ meats. read more

We've wanted to stop and try this place for a couple years. Needless to say, we will never be back. And this is why; the man at the front counter taking orders is rude and needs a class in customer service. On a Thursday, we came in at 7:45 pm. The restaurant closes at 9 pm. Do not order a burger from here after 7:45! If you do, you will try to be talked out of it. Because it seems like at obvious inconvience. Oh, and if the sweet tea is out you will get, "oh it's out? First time ever visiting McGregor and I seen the sign passing through town and I thought I should give it a go. Nice lady on the phone wasn't pleasant enough and suggested I buy ribs by the plate instead of by the pound because it would be cheaper. I can appreciate that very much. On arrival right at 11AM I'm the only one there, and the small or BBQ woke up my senses in the best way. Lady came to the counter and asked if I was the phone order to which I said yes. A few moment later she came back with two large containers and 4 small ones. The aluminum containers was the rack of ribs, The Styrofoam container was five slices of white bread, and force small containers was two barbecue sauce one purple onions and one pickle. Now on the phone I ordered beans and Mac N Cheese, but when I got home I found out to my surprise that they didn't give me my sides at all. most of the time this wouldn't be a big deal I would just go back for what I paid for. However I live a good 20 min out, and it would be a 40 min drive round trip for beans and some Mac, to me it didn't seem worth the drive. So I opened the ribs and found them to look disheveled and some what shredded unlike any ribs I have seen before. They tasted okay, not memorable or bad, just okay. No smoke ring or even smoke flavor to be found. The sauce was more of the same. The one plus I could take from them is that they were soft, but not really what I am used to or to my liking. read more

We stopped in for some dinner on the way through town. This was quite possibly the worst bbq I've ever had. I got a chopped brisket sandwich. I expect some fat but this 75% fat. My husband got a brisket sandwich in Texas toast. He expected sliced brisket but it was also chopped. I would have said something but no one was around. When I entered this establishment, I noticed the decor and the atmosphere....I really felt welcomed as part of the family. This place WOWED me and I appreciate the fact that I wasn't rushed into ordering our food. Everything is beautifully rustic looking and so clean. And there's even places that you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. There's an outside area on the side with a huge TV. Employees were absolutely 100% friendly and laughing with us. I went in during a rainstorm and they had just opened up. The drive thru line was busy. No-one inside the restaurant but me. There was no-one available to take my order for at least 3 mins. Then she took my order, a simple to-go 3/4 lb of brisket. After 10 mins of waiting another employee asked if she could help, I said no, my order is in. I could see in the kitchen that several orders were being delivered to the drive thru. Finally my order came after another 5 mins. I was there from !0:50 to 11:05. Got home and the order was terrific. Great meat sliced thick and delicious. It was clearly above 1lb!!! But for the wait and lack of communication I would rate this 5 stars. As we all know BBQ places are a dime a dozen. However, the different unique items from Coach's menu sets them a pet from the crowd. Such as, the Priscilla's Brisket Tacos, it just doesn't get much better! I don't know where they get their tortillas from, but they are GOOD! The other items like the nachos, stuffed potatoes etc are great and especially if you're in the mood for BBQ, goood Texas BBQ but want it served with a unique twist!
