He is very knowledgeable about exercise and the way the body works, it is helpful to understand why we are doing certain things certain ways. Having more information about the way my body works while we train helps me to feel more confident in my workouts. I have several health issues that can be difficult to manage and he has always worked with me to tailor our sessions to be what I need. I have seen weight loss, but more importantly I have seen an increase in my strength and the way I feel in general. Many of the aches and pains I had before have been noticeably less and I can see a definite correlation between working hard at Progressive Resistance and how I feel. I was never someone that thought working out or training was enjoyable before, but his methods and explanations have absolutely made me enjoy weight lifting with him. Tim has provided me with stretches I can do at home, books to check out from him and read, and PT when I have been hurt. The idea of the training is separating training from performance. When you train for strength, cardio etc you are doing a very CONTROLLED exercise designed to build strength and endurance with the minimum of risk and stress to joints and other areas of your body. The other component is allowing the body to rest; you're only building muscle and strength when your body is recovering and resting so he encourages this and discourages overtraining. This emphasis on control and safety and rest during training allows better PERFORMANCE which is when you're actually using your body; for competitive sports and just daily life. For me as a physician and surgeon who sometimes does surgery all day it is having the strength to physically perform all day while minimizing fatigue. Truly a new take on exercise that nevertheless makes great sense. In light of this philosophy training like Cross fit looks really silly; lots of uncontrolled motion with high potential for injury. Truly a fantastic exercise place. Can't wait to see it grow.

The room stays between 90-95 degrees, and the instructor walks you through an hour of practice. I went to the 6am class, and it is a little intense for those that haven't practiced in a while. The room does get hot, and if your body isn't used to it, you will get dizzy, drink a ton of water!!!! It is a class for all levels though, so don't be intimidated by the girl that can twist her legs and do handstands at random, or the grunter that grunts every 5 seconds. The gym itself is pretty small, but it has all the equipment you need. Their bathrooms have lockers and showers as well. They offer towels as well and other items in the restrooms if you forget to bring your towel! It's pretty well maintained.

Through Coach BJ's program, I was able to build strength and endurance, while maintaining weight requirements. Which ultimately led to a 4th place finish in my weight class, and a World Silver Medal in women's team. I was in the Army for 8 years and I've been in two car accidents (2003 &2007) which has been rough on my body. I've had constant back pain for what feels like forever. After years of chiropractic care and attempts to find relief via yoga and reformer Pilates, I was at my whit's end. While complaining about my back pain one day, my friend told me to go talk to Jim (his trainer of almost 3 years) to see if he could help me. Well this is what happened....... First Meeting - Jim educated me like I was sitting in one of my old MBA courses. I'm not used to trainers sharing their knowledge so freely. I am all about gaining knowledge and Jim gives you the kind of information that you can use for a lifetime on your own so of course I was all in to try him out for a month. After the first month - I have absolutely positively no more back pain. I mean NONE. I now get up from lying down or siting after long periods without making weird noises from pain. I also noticed that my posture for dance has greatly improved. I dance Kizomba, Bachata, Salsa and a little Tango. I am now sooo much smoother and lighter on the dance floor and I no longer have pain after long nights of dancing. It is now the end of month two - I am now able to feel my muscles develop and I can see my old Army Boot Camp body returning. I am waaay overweight so this is a really big deal for me.
