I used to watch CNN, but I really don't anymore. When it was first launched by Ted Turner in 1980 it was a unique concept, all news, 24 hours a day. Today other competitors have entered the 24 hour news market and news delivery itself is experiencing a change as well. Add to that the recent Paramount merger and them in turn parting ways with some of my favorite talent (poppy Harlow and Paula Reid) I find myself increasingly watching some of the competitor channels. read more

Biased, fake news, many of them suffer from TDS. CNN was good in the early 90's when they started, the original owner Turner was great. We grew up on NBC and ABC, legacy news/tv, but they are so woke now too just like CNN, just look at their shows, it is a hate fest. Then their news, is so fake and biased. We never watch CNN, ABC, NBC, MSNOW, Univision or Telemundo anymore, all have gone off the edge. I'm one of the 51+ million viewers of the presidential debate on 6/27/24 and despite a lot of "hair on fire" talking head apocalyptic predictions about CNN's hosting, in my humble opinion, it went pretty okay. Nothing political to say here, just that I thought is was done in a fairly respectful and without heavy bias. I started watching CNN from their very beginning, yes that long ago, but this isn't about me or political nonsense, this page is about CNN so here goes. CNN (Cable News Network) The cable news organization that has been providing continuous 24-hour news coverage since its inception. Founded by media mogul Ted Turner, the network has evolved significantly over the years, in my opinion, not for the better unfortunately.  CNN began broadcasting on June 1, 1980, as the first all-news television channel in the US. Its initial headquarters were in Atlanta, with a staff of around 300 employees. Since then, CNN has grown exponentially, expanding its presence and now has approximately 4,000 employees worldwide. It's now owned by CNN Global, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. Turner Broadcasting System initially owned CNN until it merged with Time Warner in 1996. After several structural changes and the acquisition of Time Warner by AT&T in 2018, Warner Bros. Discovery  became CNN's parent company in 2022. Let's talk ratings, CNN has touted maintaining a steady viewership with an average of around 1 million viewers daily. However, ratings fluctuate depending on the current events and political climate. Overall in a recent month stack up of the big three cable news channels it looked like this in prime time:  Total Viewers: Fox News 2,262,000 MSNBC 1,165,000 CNN 587,000 But wait, there's more, CNN, which proclaims itself as "the most trusted name in news," drew just 83,000 viewers aged 25 to 54 during the week of May 13-19 from 8 to 11 p.m. -- its lowest-rated week since 1991, according to Nielsen. Rut Roh  Aside for arguably being a major catalyst for the "fake news" moniker, and making some really pour leadership and host choices it's not all their fault thanks to social media and a younger audience for news. Don't take my word for it, CNN actually posted a story, on their website, that according to the Nielsen Company in May 2024, that they maintain the youngest audience in cable in May with a median age of 67 years, 4 years younger than MSNBC (71) and 3 years younger than Fox News. Yikes!!! As for social media, Tucker Carlson, who was fired by Fox News, where his average show numbers were around 3 million, but on only his second episode of 8pm news on X, formerly Twitter, had over 54 million views. So yeah, in my opinion, age and social media is killing cable news in general.  Bottom line: It's not the same as those screens we used to watch at airports, bars, casinos, etc.  especially since CNN Airport Network shut down nationwide at the end of March 2022, ending that 30-year run. The demise if cable news has been predicted for years but I reference a Politico article "Old People Love Cable News -- and They Vote" stating that the predictions of cable news' demise are dead wrong. I have tried to subscribe but when I do it never goes through I have spoken to my bank and there seems to be a problem with CNN not my account, and then my account gets flagged for a while. There is no way to get ahold of them either by phone or email. The phone numbers on the web are either scams for other companies or a voice says its a reserved line. I visited this area in the Fall. CNN was my primary source for news back in the day. Even when I had CNN I mainly listened to the news on the radio during my long commute to and from work. Basically I'm not an expert in the accuracy of their reports or anyone else's for that matter. I have my professional information sources that lead me to believe the news reports are not always accurate. I believe it's because they're too busy trying to be the first one to report the story. I use my good judgment. I've learned how to do my own research over the years. I agree with many others that they have slipped over the years. I do use their time clock on the building near 59th at 10 Columbus Circle. The clock is iconic. read more

CNN is one voice in the marketplace of ideas and as such I can be more forgiving of their left of center perspective. I can almost predict down to inflection and tone what side of any argument most anchors, pundits and hosts will land. So be it. If mild progressivism is where they want to mark their territory, they are certainly entitled to it. I'm a grown-up and fully understand that truly objective journalism went the way of the leisure suit and Ted Turner never to return. What I do object to is their constant conflation of news and entertainment. Just today, I had to watch six promos an hour highlighting Alicia Keys appearance tonight on their pandemic special. I get it... Infotainment rules - no need to bludgeon me over the head. I come to the network for news while CNN's president Jeff Zucker thinks he's still running the Today Show from his old school perch keeping us glued to the tube with a constant stream of stunts and clichés. Lisa Kudrow baking a quiche while discussing her latest straight to video adventure and the intricacies of the line-item veto never did it for me at 7am. Even MTV doesn't play music videos anymore making CNN about thirty years too late to the party. Try something new Jeff, how about entertaining me with facts. Online i saw Wolfe Blitzer's March 19 interview with Adam Schiff. Although I should not been surprised, at the onset Blitzer asked Schiff about accusations that he was a liar. Schiff of course was not going to admit to anything and danced around the question. Blitzer did not challenge him although Schiff"s lies are well documented. A journalist ( and I use this term lightly) worth his salt would research his guest before an interview. Schiff stated that Republicans want to cut Social security and Medicare. So for 59 days there has been protests in Portland. Why is CNN not reporting this? They need to look a certain way? I didn't even know. All I want is to know what's going on in the world. Now I feel CNN is hiding news as not to look bad. I found out about this by switching to Fox News. I wanted to see what they were saying about John Lewis. Of course they are reporting the riots in Portland. They were also paying tribute to John Lewis something I didn't think they would do, but they are. So now CNN isn't my go to anymore. If I want to know about the latest coronavirus stats, yes, I will be sure to tune into CNN. That's all I hear about ever on that station. 7/27/20- Sure enough CNN is reporting Portland. I probably watch this news channel the most out of the big 3 (MSNBC and Fox being the other two). I enjoy their news coverage...while it does lean left, it also talks about the right in a positive light. Unlike Fixed Noise, it is not trying to use GOP scare tactics, but instead reports the news. I do not find them to be a great news station...but I can stand Anderson Cooper, Wolf Blitzer and the great grump Jack Cafferty way more than Fox's O'Reilly or MSNBC's Olberman. Larry King is a show I catch most weeknights (at 9pm live or midnight). King is such a goon and ask some of the best softball questions on cable tv today. When he happens to ask a hard hitting question, I think he doesn't even know he is doing so. The old curmudgeon in suspenders gets some great guests from both parties and also gets top celebrities too. Oh and that CNN meter that was displayed during the debates was an awful idea. Plus they added 6 graphs around the screen that showed points given by the "best political team on cable." Yuck. It was obvious that the guys backstage at CNN like pretty colors and gadgets, so they slathered them all over the screen. Oh and they do love that multi touch screen.
