Leaving an update. We recently came by again to buy a couple of pints for home. As I was enjoying my coconut cream from the pint we brought home, I bit into a hard piece of white plastic. Was at an outdoor event of the Blue Claws stadium and there were a variety of food and beverage trucks on campus, encircling the outfield. This is a baseball stadium for those who not aware. Clydes had a food truck and the ice cream had very little fat in it, more like ice milk. The cone was very small. Also the egg cream was not super cold. The seltzer wasn't real bubbly. Maybe their mother store in Garfield is rated good but the truck was poor. read more

I love this place for what it is. A place to go for old fashioned Ice. Every time I go I get the same thing. Chocolate! But it's all good A great idea for parties. Buy the entire container of lemon ice for those hot summer days and picnics. We would pack it in ice and the kids would eat it all day while the adults would pour rum over it. Can't beat it on those 95 degree days around the pool I've been going to this place for about 40 years And they have moved to a different storefront but never updated so if fancy is what you're looking for go elsewhere. On any given day you'll see the locals hanging outside on the sidewalk in their folding chairs throwing the Bull while eating ice. Kids spilling down their legs and dried up gum on the sidewalk! The water ice here is very good but the ice cream was just ok, the prices are on the expensive side. The store itself is kind of miserable with a couple of older guys that seemed to perpetuate that feeling on to the customers with zero personality. They have a deli case with Thumann's cold cuts if you really want a sandwich, but there are some great Italian delis nearby so for me it's about the homemade ice and ice cream. I always preferred Jo-Jo's homemade ices when both were open, now with Jo-Jo's gone this is the next best option. I really wouldn't go out of my way for Clyde's read more

This is my favorite place for italian ice! i have been coming here since i was a little kid. This is hands down the best homemade italian ice around and it kills ritas and other competitors. They have tons of flavors and its all cheap too. Its awesome to get the big tubs of lemon and make alcoholic drinks with them! deff worth checking out, i recommend this place to anyone read more

My uncle used to take my cousins and I here all the time growing up. I recently returned and the place has not changed a bit! It has a great neighborhood corner store feel and obviously reminds me of my childhood. I must say their Italian ice is the best I have ever had. It is also inexpensive which is always a plus. Have to give them a 1 star review. Despite hearing the great reviews on the ice cream we can only base our review on the customer service of the staff. We made the trip (20 minute drive )out to get ice cream with several families and arrived 5 minutes before closing. We found the door locked and the two employees who were still in the building ducked behind the counter so they would not have to open the door and serve us. There are many great local ice cream places in Bergen County that appreciate your business. This is one that obviously doesn't need business. If you haven't been -don't bother. Try Mikes ( Ridgewood ) , Cranberry Junction ( Hackensack ) or Bischoff's ( Teaneck ) the owners and staff are great ! read more

I grew up in Garfield eating Clyde's Italian ice and Jo-Jo's Italian ice, Clyde's used to be down the block from its current location and my Grandfather used to take me there all the time after school, Jo-Jo's was on Lanza ave and closed down a few years ago. Clyde's has always been my favorite Italian ice, they always had a wide variety of Italian ices and candy making supplies. I know they used to even make sandwiches and had sabretts at one point, but its more or less an Italian ice/candy store. It is a little more expensive now but I'm sure they still do fine being a staple in Garfield for so long and Jo-Jo's closing down, They basically run a monopoly of Italian ice in this area. I like homemade Italian ice way better than Rita's or any other place, even when Jo-Jo's was open, which was good, I still always liked Clyde's more. Great place to take the kids, girlfriend, or even wife for a treat. They also have homemade ice cream as well from what I remember, which I haven't had in years but they always had really good flavors. read more

Me and my Fiance are usually more of the italian ice type of peeps and when it comes to italian ice in NJ, Clyde's is the place. Been coming to Clyde's for years but in all the years of going there, we always got the ice rather than the ice cream...Recently we moved down the block from them...and so yesterday we decided to go for a walk to get some ice..when we got there, we decided to finally switch things up and try the ice cream after all these years...well...I noticed they had a licorice flavored ice cream...so I was thinking...ugh, how can that be good as an ice cream flavor....so I asked to try it..and I was blown away...it was delicious...then I saw they had chocolate raspberry truffle....so I tried it and couldn't believe how good it was...I went with the truffle one..but I will be back for the licorice..lol...the fiance had strawberries and cream.which you would think is so basic...but far from basic...their ice creams are just as good as their ices...they're creamy and rich....I would love to see this place make a flavor ice that is well known in the italian communities of ny...and that is Spumoni or as some would call it..lily with nuts..it is a milk based ice with the flavors of rum and vanilla with sliced almonds in it...yum...we are a totally Clyde's fan household....THEY ROCK! read more

With all the Rita Ice places popping up all over, here's a review for the mom n pop Italian Ice shop. Clyde's has great Italian Ices. Although the place itself is not aesthetically pleasing to the eye in any way, shape, or form, please do not let that deter you from walking up to the counter. Tucked away in a residential part of Garfield, yes, you'll need your GPS if you're not familiar with the area. That's OK. Thank God for technology. Anyway, been going here since I was a teenager and have only had the ices. Can't comment on their ice cream. Funny, If you have someone in your family who happens to like making homemade chocolate confections, their back room has 100's of chocolate molds for sale. Weird, right? Also a deli counter, some shelves with a few grocery items and a freezer that looks like it may be used by the tenants upstairs. Definitely not a bright, pastel colored, inviting ice cream shop but who cares. It's good! Only slight negative is that their Lemon is not what I remember from years ago. Slight "lemon pledge-like" taste to it but still OK, I guess. Listen, I'm not saying you'll abandon Rita's after a trip to Clyde's but you will appreciate how a tried-and-true local family can still compete with the chains out there today. Enjoy! read more

Great place, they have delicious homemade ice and ice cream --with the ice being my favorite. I usually go to the one in Garfield -as that is where I grew up. The customer service is good too --the workers always seemed inclined to help and let you sample. Lemon ice is a classic, but if you are feeling bold try something less common like their strawberry lemonade or green apple! Flavors seem to change by week, but they always have the basic lemon, cherry, blue rasp. chocolate, and watermelon. Several years ago I used to live across the street from here. I truly enjoyed the neighborhood feel of the store, seeing familiar faces and shooting the breeze with the friendly owner while picking up a morning coffee or bagel. It was a convenient warm little spot to go. Their food items (packaged and what they make) are limited but do the job in a pinch. I was never a huge fan of their ice cream and Italian ice as I found the ice cream to often taste freezer burnt and their Italian ice to be a bit on the watery side. However, I did love that they had peach ice cream. They have since expanded to have more locations so I'm happy to see that their business is thriving. Clyde's closes for a period of time I believe in the wintertime. Worth checking out if you're local. read more
