I love thrifting and thrifting in Carytown is the best. I checked out Clementine for the first time last Saturday and learned that it was Ashby's bigger brand names sister. Things here are a bit pricier than Ashby's, but it's because they are more desirable brands. Do note that they carry similar accessories as Ashby here and will charge more at Clementine (the same hairclips I got at Ashby for $6 were $9 in Clementine). They carry really cute clothes here. I had fun looking through the racks for new summer clothes. The people who work here are really kind. It is a smaller store so it's easier to look through things a bit quicker. They have three fitting rooms in the back. I love the natural lighting in this space a lot. I came with a group of girlfriends and we had a great time shopping here. I highly recommend checking out Clementine for brands like Free People, Urban Outfitters, Lilly Pulitzer, and more. read more

Clementine is a sweet little consignment shop with some nice name brand items. There's quite a bit of Lily, Kate Spade, Anthro and some Prada. It's a galley style floor plan so it gets pretty tight when it's busy. And on this particular day, it was packed like sardines. There was a line for the dressing rooms a dozen people deep. They staff is super friendly. They helped us and other customers with getting down purses from shelves with a smile! There's a sale room in back. Some of the inventory is a little high priced, but Most is moderately priced. Most of the jewelry is new and there's baskets and baskets of tiny stud earrings. This store is definitely worth a look!! The aesthetic is cute and kitschy, the clothes are upper middle class with a stylish twist (You're not at potatoes closet, or whatever it's called) You'll find J. Crew, J. Brand, Banana Republic, Lululemon, 7 for all man kind, Mossimo, Vince Cammuto (sp), Frye, Ann(e) Taylor etc. Great brands but some are priced above market - be smart. Everything is in very good condition, selection of fun stuff, near good eats and other interesting shops. I'd you're not too much of a penny pincher its a great placer to shop, if you poopoo at a $15-$20 top, best keep walking. Good will is just down the way. :) read more

I have shopped here several times before but had a very disappointing experience at Clementine today. I overheard the store manager tell a consignment client they can bring in items by appointment or simply bring them in store. When I approached register and manager, Larissa Wisniewski, I was ignored until I asked about spring consignment. I was then told it was by appointment only. When clarifying, I was told verbatim that people who have consigned before are of "elevated status" and have"VIP privilege" and "normal consigners" must book an appointment online. As someone who has worked in the service industry, I am appalled by the unprofessionalism and disrespect towards paying customers. Her behavior was completely rude and dismissive. read more

High end consignment store with some great brands! Some of these brands come with high price tags (still much lower than buying new), but just know this isn't the spot to buy a bunch of pieces all for $100. You'll likely only get 1-3 items for $100. I am reviewing this based on two trips with ladies who are both experts in the field. My sister a long time fashionista and another friend who has worked in retail and owned her own super successful ladies clothing store in Atlanta. First off, this place is very small. This means that inventory is limited to a certain size range (most sizes seemed to be 2-10) . The upside of this is that only the best makes it to the racks. This clothing is very gently used. They sell accessories as well. Great costume jewelry, shoes, hats, bags etc. Most brands are toward the mid to top tier of what you would see in stores. I checked JCrew, Banana Republic, Lily Pulitzer, BCBG, Laundry, Diane Von Furstenburg, Marc Jacobs, Kors etc. The changing rooms are not for the super shy but the store is merchandised well and it would be a great place to find a fun weekend outfit without trolling the suburban malls. Whomever is merchandising the store has a whimsical eye and it seems to be easy to shop as categories are broken down properly. They do take consignment with a 50/50 split by appointment. read more

They have an issue with staff. If you're near the doorway and ignore one customer who walks in, but then greet the person that walks in a few mins later (they were dressed better I guess!) it's very off-putting. Just saying. There are a lot of options around for buying consignment/second hand, so yall might want to consider the customer service issue. read more

Still a paradigm for any consignment shop in terms of product and brand mix....though pricey as many second-hand places are. I have sold my clothes with them for years... there was a switch of ownership, and it has now expanded allowing them to take in more inventory. There are a few high end items mixed in with contemporary designers, however, they carry a lot of mid-range and low-priced clothing mixed in. Richmond is a pretty diverse place - so I understand that the broader the market, the better. However, there are some items that should be left to Plato's Closet. I really like the new owners- super nice ladies. With their expansion, I think they need to invest in some kind IT to manage the inventory and accounts. And, I agree with previous reviews that they need to provide an itemized receipt of your goods. I don't necessarily trust that there is accurate hand-written book-keeping of my items otherwise. read more

I walked in; no greeting. I spent a lot of time looking at dresses; no one asked if I needed any help. I had about 10 dresses in my arms; no one asked if they could take some of the clothes to the dressing room. I spent a lot of time in the dressing room; no one checked on me. I looked at some jewelry at the counter directly in front of an employee; she didn't acknowledge me. I'm in the retail industry, and understand that sometimes when it gets busy an employee might be frazzled and accidentally neglect a customer. But there were hardly any customers in that small space, and I was shopping for over 20 minutes. The store has some cute things, but I'm less inclined to support a store that makes a customer feel ignored. I'd rather pay a little more at a store if the staff is friendly. read more

If you're looking a higher end consignment shop, Clementine is definitely the location to find name brand gently used clothes at a reduced price. That said, keep in mind that a lot of these items started with a large price tag so even with the reduction, many items are still heftily priced. In the few times I've visited, I don't see a perfect system to the organization so just allot enough time to look around at everything. I also wouldn't expect a ton of help from employees. The only time I've been acknowledged is at checkout. So overall it's a great place to find many things I wouldn't typically buy new, but customer service could be better. read more

I have so much love for Clementine and its sister store, Ashby! I've snagged items from J. Crew and Banana Republic, barely worn Theory jeans, and a brand new blouse from Anthropologie - all at reasonable prices. Items in the shop vary with the season but in my experience, Clementine consistently maintains a fabulous selection of clothes, shoes, and accessories. I'm generally skeptical of purchasing previously-owned shoes and have yet to purchase a pair from Clementine, but the store carries an impressive selection of gently worn shoes which can include designer labels such as Christian Louboutin, Tory Burch, and Frye (for reals!). Con: the shop is small and can get very crowded on the weekends and there are only about 3 fitting rooms; try to come here during the week. The employees are very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable of the current inventory. The décor is homey yet hip, you can tell the owner takes great care to create a pleasant shopping experience for customers. If you have mad love for consignment stores, don't miss out on Clementine - you'll be sure to walk out with awesome finds! read more

If you are looking for high end designer clothes at less-than-retail prices... you may have found your new fave clothing store. Mind you, less-than-retail prices for some of the brands that they carry will still result in (in my opinion) an expensive tab just because they are so high end. I'm talking some items for $100+. Which, to me, is shocking being that this is a consignment store. It all depends on the day, the stock, and what you're looking for. I found great DVF dresses and cute Tory Burch top but prices were still more than I would like to pay. Clothing selection was limited (or well curated, if we're being snobby), due to the size of the store. However, I loved their jewelery. There was a sale when I went and got a really nice chain for $8! and a ring for the same price as well. I've seen the same style on the streets of SoHo but 3x the price, so good bargain there. So I like Clementine in theory. A well-edited consignment store that only takes the best of the best. This makes things easier for shoppers. No going through a bunch of crap. Only nice items in mint condition. What I don't like is the prices. You're not really gonna find bargains here. I once found a Nannette Lepore hat I liked, but the price was still $70. Just too much for something that's already been used. That said, I do love the selection of new jewelry and accessories sold here. These are always fun, affordable, trendy costume pieces that make a great addition to any wardrobe. Found a Balenciaga Knits cashmere sweater for $22 on the sale rack- I'm a very happy girl! While visiting Richmond, I stopped through all the vintage/thrift/re-sale I could find. (The whole re-sale situation in DC, where I live, is terrible.) This one is more of a re-sale shop as far as pricing goes. What they carry seemed worth the price, though I found the Anthro prices a bit baffling. (I can usually do better than those prices on the store sale racks.) Barney New York, Nina Ricci, Tory Burch, Thakoon...good brands, but you will have to shell out a bit for them. I'll definitely go back, and check the sale rack first! read more

This is a shop chock-full of clothing and accessories! It tends to keep up with the seasons, swapping out inventory when possible. Upon my first visit here, I was a little overwhelmed with how many articles of clothing were squished on the racks. It was mostly organized by size and type of attire, but then it was basically a free for all in how things were hung. So, you really have to peer at every item, take it out if something happens to catch your eye and see if it works. I will hand it to the store manager(s) that they keep a pretty tight process with consigning and inventory management (see website for full details)! Others have mentioned the brands that this store carries, and it is pretty consistent from season to season. So, I was able to get an ASTR-branded blouse for $18. I am not sure what its retail value would have been, but I bet it was way higher than $18! On a subsequent visit, I came in during in-store consignment hours. I was pretty lucky that no one was in line in front of me for the process, so the selection process took all of five minutes. Out of about 6-7 items, the selectors chose two dresses from a brand sold at Bloomingdale's; I was not surprised those were chosen, but I was a little surprised the items from The Limited weren't picked, because that is a brand on par with Ann Taylor. They were even fall/winter colors so suitable for the upcoming seasons. Oh well, I donated them elsewhere, and now I have the responsibility of calling within the next 4-6 weeks to check on the items' selling status. I am SO glad that Clementine offers a check for 50% of the selling price vs. only store credit! Also, after I was done with the consigning process, four more people came in, so it can get busy. I've stopped by a couple of times, but unfortunately, I have not been able to find anything that fits. However, the quality of products is amazing. I like how the store's Instagram advertises the latest items available for purchase though, so you can peruse online before making an in-person visit! Bottom line: Give it a try, but it may take several visits before you find something that works. When you do, you can bet the quality will be great and the style will be up-to-date, but the price will be a little higher than other consignment shops given the brands. read more

My favorite thing about Clementine is the shopping experience in general. Even if I don't buy anything (which rarely happens), it's fun just to peruse in a cute store with a fun atmosphere and nice employees. That can be hard to find in a consignment shop. Its a good mix of affordable and designer items, which of course are not cheap but often marked down more than 50%. My purchase yesterday is a great example of the range of prices: J.Crew sweater vest top: $8 (over $40 new) Anlo long bootcut jeans: $29 (typically over $100 new) Betsy Johnson satin cocktail dress: $59 (typically $3-400 new) Now, I picked those items because I thought they were great deals. Not everything in the store is so reasonably priced, so it pays to be selective. Really love this shop in Carytown! I have only sold at this location but the items they sell are really nicely picked and fresh items. It has been a month since I shared my items with them and will be calling them soon to see if they have sold. I'm a fan of Clementine, particularly because of the quality of the consignment clothing they carry. I don't mind digging, but I hate having to check clothing for spots or stains... luckily Clementine only takes the best labels and everything is in great condition. Like any consignment store, you have to peruse often and have a little bit of patience and luck... but you can find some awesome stuff... I have gotten a couple of pairs of Seven jeans, already hemmed to fit me perfectly. I also have found some awesome sweaters and dresses... Other things to check out are the selection of shoes and purses... some of them are a little pricey but still a great value... They also have some really cute accessories- some chunky necklaces and fun feathered headbands... The shop is small and the dressing rooms have tall velvet curtains instead of walls so it can seem not so private, but you totally get used to it. And some of the prices are still steep even though the clothing is used... but for what it is, it's a good deal. read more

I have shopped at Clementine somewhat frequently since it opened. Sometimes it is a great experience and other times it isn't. Sometimes the employees are very friendly and sometimes they aren't. Sometimes the selection is great and sometimes it is lacking. Sometimes the local jewelry is amazing and other times it's not great. These are things that can be expected at any store. Recently my boyfriend purchased something for me there and it did not fit. The next day we called to see if there was anything that could be done, a return or exchange or anything and they were very strict about the return policy, which is that all sales are final. While I completely understand, the way my inquiry has handled and the attitude I was given has made me change my opinion of Clementine. I spoke to two women who were very curt and the second woman hung up on me before I was finished with the conversation. I am willing to be understanding about an unpleasant experience with an employee from time to time, but I will no longer think of Clementine as a store I will browse through on a whim on the off chance I'll find a gem to a place I just won't be bothered to go into. read more

Clementine is a nice shop and the ladies who work here are perfectly sweet in that practiced, studied kind of way. I made an appointment (a month and a half in advance) and carefully culled my wardrobe for only the brands and styles they told me they were looking for. Everything was new, many things were still with tags. They took 3 items of the 200+ I brought. Seriously. So I was a little peeved about that. They write you a check for things you want to consign after 30 days of having your stuff but you have to call them to get it and it takes another week (at the most) for them to write you a check. Between the month it takes to get your appointment and the month+ that it takes to get your check this is not a place to consign if you need fast cash. They DO pay fair prices for the items they consign, which is good and bad. Good in that consignors are well taken care of and will return with good merchandise for people to buy in the future. Bad in that it drives the prices up a bit. Me being a cheapskate, I've never been able to justify buying things from them. The outfits are super cute and well kept and I don't doubt that it's totally reasonable to sell even a second hand designer dress for the prices they charge but I just can't do it. Really nice shop, very well organized and well kept. They have one changing room so you can try things on. It's nice being in there and comfortable to browse. As other posters have mentioned, it's really small, so a large group of friends might have a tough time squeezing in here. 20 people is right out. 8 might be a stretch, even. read more

Clementine is a cute little upscale consignment shop. And by little I mean REALLY little. Literally, it's not very big so if you go in on a Saturday like I did, you're not going to have much room to move around. They have a great selection of clothing, no two items will be alike, but you really can only shop here if you are tiny, they do not have bigger sizes...which I do not understand. I'm tempted to go through my closet and sell things to this store just to help out a little! They also had shoes and accessories. I think some of the jewelry and clutches are new items and have never been worn before. I would go back to check it out, but only when I knew it wouldn't be very busy in there. I've been to Clementine several times and always leave wanting more from the store. The cons: -Clementine is small, super small. Anymore than 2 or 3 customers in the store at a time and it begins to feel incredibly cramped. -There are only two long racks of clothing on either side of the store- very limited selection. For anyone over a size 6 or size 8 don't expect to find anything! The pros: -What the Clementine does carry, both in shoes and jewelry, is very gently used, so although the prices sometimes seem high for consignment the garments are in great condition -A lot of well known, more expensive brands (although I have seen two Forever 21 items that sort of seem out of place...) Overall, I say give it a shot, but don't expect a whole lot. read more

What a great place to purchase quality pieces for somewhat affordable prices. I found the staff very helpful and have always found at least one great piece upon visiting. The shoes were very stylish however, I tend to shop for clothing at consignment stores. There sister store is Ashby which is down the street next to Mellow Mushroom. I have personally have sold pieces here and got back $40-50 per piece. Do check them out and consider selling your fine lightly used goods to Clementine. Thought I'd love this store. I'm an experienced consignee from Brooklyn, sell regularly on online stores, and I like nice things. In 3 years I have 3 times brought cool clothing that was seasonally appropriate, unique, designer, to Clementine. 3 times I've gone home with no dice and no explanation. The racks are jammed tight with stuff, so either they aren't selling, or I'm sadly in the wrong market. There's Ashby down the street for your trendy (& budget) pieces. But a trip to Clementine may not be worth prepping or taking your clothes out the closet. 1 star for existing, cuz consignor shops are a quaint cool thing; 1 star for refolding your clothes when they rebag them. read more

First time shopping here and I wish I found it when I moved to Richmond months ago! The selection is really cute and a good mix of casual, work attire; and formal clothing. There is a lot of J Crew, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor Loft, and higher end brands for a really good price. The accessories are reasonable priced as well. I would recommend buying the cashmere and higher quality items, because you can get some of the regular J Crew and Banana Republic shirts for less in their clearance racks at their stores. You're probably familiar with Goodwill, but Clementine takes second hand women's clothes to a whole new level. Although a small store in area, it's packed with quality pieces, so don't expect Goodwill pricing. The clothes are sorted by size and category which is helpful. My friend was able to find a Free People jumpsuit for 40 dollars, even though I didn't find anything. They had a tiny activewear section, nice shoes, Kate Spade purses, and quite an array of jewelry. If you're looking for unique, quality pieces that won't break the bank, I recommend poppin' over to Clementine. read more

Oh how I miss Clementine. I consigned my clothing there for between 2007 and early 2010 (before I moved north). While I've read negative reviews about the shop and their consigning process on various review sites on the net, I never had any problems. Sure, you have to call way in advance to schedule an appointment, but there isn't a set time attached to it. I was able to schedule Saturday appointments a month or two in advance and then drop in on that day at my convenience. I never had a problem with my items selling or with the final amount I was paid. As both a consigner and a frequent customer of the store, I knew the general price ranges for items similar to mine and could guesstimate the amount I'd receive. My guesstimates were nearly always within $10 or so. My only gripe is that they don't give you any kind of itemized receipt for what you bring in. I made sure to keep lists of everything I took in, but there was no way to guarantee my blouse wasn't getting mixed in with somebody else's consignment loot (they take everything to the back room--or out of sight--when selecting what they will or will not accept). The shop itself is very quaint. I like how well-edited it is. Lots of bridge designers like Tory Burch, Nanette Lepore and BCBG. They clearly know how to run a shop and maintain inventory. Prices aren't anything to write home about. Unless it was something I really wanted, forking over $68 for a used Nanette Lepore blouse from last season seemed silly, especially with the mad clearances at most department stores (and online coupon codes). If you're going to shop, I'd recommend doing so on a weekday and not on the weekend. It can get a little crowded. All things considered, Clementine is a great little shop. It's fun to browse, and if you go often enough you'll probably stumble upon some "ghost of wardrobe wish-list past," as I did with a cute J Crew dress I ended up purchasing on the spot.
