My friend and I were taking a daily trip from Virginia to Maryland. I saw the Clear Springs Country Diner. This was situated on the highway so it would be easy to enter and exit. We were welcomed as we walked in! The lady that took our order was very friendly and professional. She explained the daily specials "especially the All You Can Eat Chicken". Food was good and plentiful. This restaurant has different seating areas. We were in the back. The area was clean and inviting. Solid diner! Passing through, we stopped here for breakfast and had a delicious meal. The pancakes were great - fluffy and buttery - so buttery! - with the slightest crisp edge. I'd come back just for these. The table also split some biscuits and sausage gravy, which were filling and good. The veggie omelet was pretty tasty too. The home fries and hash browns were okay, not bad but not spectacular. This is a place where they'll always keep your coffee cup filled and will make sure you're well fed. All at a great price. Its been a while since I've eaten breakfast. Like a whole 7 days! That time goes by too quickly. I never would have known this place even existed and I frequently drive up and down this interstate. I love the heart shape, bistro chairs. I also love the chalkboard wall of menu items. Seems like this facility is family run and operated and they have dependable staff. You seat yourself and are taken care of almost immediately. They serve breakfast all day. That's five stars right there. I usually like a well rounded breakfast with equally sweet and salty items. I ordered the blueberry pancake, sausage gravy and an egg with toast and sausage. Oh, and the hot tea for me was a big deal. I have been looking forward to coming by here for a couple months after reading an article on it online. At any rate, stopped here on my way down state on a business trip a Sunday morn. This is off the interstate on scenic 40- which I would recommend to drive on from Cumberland to Hagerstown at least once. Drive up around Sideling Hill, stop at the pull over overlooks, spend some time the back way, etc. At any rate now that I've calmed down- ordered breakfast. This place is a small quaint place with plenty of tables and the locals coming in every morning for a cup and a plate. Either way- nice spot. Went with the 2 eggs, toast, and bacon combo- which came with home fries (yuge), and added a pancake with a cup of coffee and a water. The eggs were scrambled, seasoned properly and got standard breakfast must-have, plenty of bacon (4 strips!), and home fries were a scalloped potatoes crispy side or fried-side prepared. Very tasty. As far as the pancake- it was the circumference of a bowling ball, nice and fluffy. Plenty of jellies and jams to pick from, and the coffee was refilled constantly. Service was very good and attentive - I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place as a great option other than the usual Denny's/IHOP/etc. read more

For almost as long as I've lived in this area, I have been wanting to check this place out. It's always busy when I pass by, so I assumed they must be really good. Unfortunately, after dining there with my GF this morning, I was rather underwhelmed. I don't want this to be all negative though, as the place was far from horrible. On the positive side, the staff was very friendly and courteous. The atmosphere is what I would expect from a diner/country restaurant. It was cozy and inviting. In particular, my GF and I really liked the corrugated tin ceiling. The food however, left me wanting. First was the coffee. Diner coffee is usually always good. I've eaten at lots of them across the country and that's usually pretty consistent. I don't know if it's due to cheap coffee or what, but it was a bit acrid. My GF said that the unsweetened ice tea was really good though, and I would agree having had a sip. We both ordered the sausage gravy over toast (there was no biscuit option that we could see) and home fries. The home fries were probably the best part of the entire meal. They were light and crispy, and they appeared to be deep fried which led to a nice even done-ness without any burnt or uncooked parts. The sausage gravy itself was pretty disappointing though. On its own, it had almost no flavor. Unless I was eating a piece of sausage directly, I couldn't taste any. It almost seemed like it didn't simmer long enough. There was also no seasoning that I could taste. It took a heavy dose of black pepper, salt, and hot sauce to give anything even close to resembling flavor. The sausage gravy from fast food chain, Hardees has way more flavor in it. Toast also is not the best vessel for sausage gravy, turning into a soggy mess. Then, there was the scrambled eggs I got on the side. They were overcooked, had almost no taste and were chopped up so small that I would have been better eating them with a spoon instead of a fork. Maybe their non-breakfast fare is better, but since I usually judge a diner/country restaurant on their breakfast food, it's probably going to be a long time before I attempt a second try. read more

This place has a special place in my heart. Growing up this was one of our "no-brainer" we will go to the CS diner for dinner, kind of places. The cream of crab soup. Should you ever find yourself in Washington County or Clear Spring, MD for the day like I was a few weeks ago, this is DEFINITELY the place to stop for breakfast. It's a local diner with a very casual feel. I had the grilled chicken sandwich, which was cooked to smoky perfection, and honey barbecue wings which were rightfully crispy and slathered in barbecue sauce the way barbecue wings should be. Sandwiches come with fries but they will happily substitute fries for a salad if you ask. They have a nice variety of daily specials, breakfast all day, and they also sell local honey from a local farm! The location is not hard to find and it may look small from the outside but trust me there are a lot of tables inside! They are also taking lots of COVID-19 precautions and have been very diligent, at least during my visit, to wipe down tables, require social distancing between booths and tables, and masks are required indoors. They have a few outdoor tables as well if that makes you feel safer. Definitely check them out if you're in Clear Spring, and GET the WINGS! read more

Stopped at this quaint little diner based on the reviews I saw on Yelp but I have to say my experience was completely different than those listed. Got the fried chicken lunch special on Sunday. Seemed awesome for $7.99 until the food arrived. The macaroni salad was store bought, which is ashame since it's so cheap to make, and was not good. The fried chicken arrived (note fried chicken takes 20 minutes because it is cooked to order) with two large chicken breasts and a soup cup of baked beans. I was completely excited because I was starving! The fried chicken that they are "known" for was disappointing as well. The dredge was so salty it was nearly inedible. The chicken was ok but not as moist as I had hoped it to be. The baked beans were just canned baked beans heated up. However, the worst part of the meal was dessert. I figured with everyone raving about their homemade desserts perhaps this could be the hail mary....but it was not to be. The holy cow cake I was served had a burned flavor and left an ash tray type taste in my mouth. Perhaps we just came on an off day for this diner but I cannot recommend this diner after my experience. read more
