Would really have like to try the food here, but after arriving and advised to seat ourselves, sat in a booth in the back. This place really cracked us up! Definitely all locals. The staff would take breaks with the patrons, asking "How's your mama?" and that type of questions. I overheard one server set down a plate at the next table, stating, "I know this isn't what you ordered, but I guess this is what she decided she wanted you to eat." No kidding!! First time I went here for breakfast and to describe it I would call it a local place that you have to know about it to stop in. I had the French toast with a side or potatoes. Well prices place as for two of us was only $12. The French toast was homemade and the potatoes were great. There is plenty of room so no worries about not finding a seat. Would like to try their dinner and desserts in the future. The silverware does come in a paper sleeve but once you get over this is not a $25 a plate establishment come here for the food at a great price. read more

Who would have thought that eastbound traffic on I-70 would be so abysmal on a Sunday afternoon? Exhausted after four hours, when we should have been home already, we stopped for a meal at this no-frills roadside diner. Our first surprise was the interior, which was solidly weird. The front feels like a fast-food joint, with specials scrawled on as chalkboard and sterile white floors. Then there's a dark vestibule off to the side with more tables, and around the corner is the main "dining" room, with pink vinyl booths. It felt like a combination of three different rooms, none of which really seemed like a restaurant. Likewise, the service, which others have raved about, was decidedly . . . odd. It took a long time for the lone waitress to make her way to our table, and then another long time for our food to arrive. She wasn't rude, but she definitely wasn't friendly either. Finally, the food: fried chicken was hot and crispy with a little spice, and the hearty soups tasted homemade (my husband, a cream of crab connoisseur, thought theirs was excellent.) His hot turkey sandwich was pretty standard cafeteria quality, as were the sides of corn and green beans I ordered. Their coconut cream pie was really excellent, thick and sweet with a crispy crust, though I didn't understand the meringue top -- I had thought plain whipped cream was the standard. Overall, solidly above average but not amazing. So? If you're stuck in traffic and starving, go for it. Just don't expect greatness. read more

Have eaten here for many years and I just keep going back for the hot roast turkey sandwich. Pros: Most if not all food seems to be homemade. Service is friendly. Price matches quality (for the most part). Cons: Place could use a touch up or two (torn fabric on benches etc) Some food seems frozen but it's touch and go on what you get. read more

Local here! This small diner sets on top or Fairview Mountain close to Whitetail Ski Resort. It's about 1 mile out of town, but worth the short extra distance to get something other than liquor or McDonald's around this place!!! If you're looking for comfort food, this is the place to go. So far my favorite thing is the Hot turkey sandwich with gravy and fries/mashed potatoes (whichever you're in the mood for). Amazing cream of crab soup. Their cheese steaks are pretty great...the list can go on and on. Only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is sometimes the service isn't the greatest, but it's usually young people waiting on people while the older folks are in the kitchen making their delicious food!!! If you are staying at the Sleep Inn 4 miles away, this is one of few alternatives to McDonalds. It is far superior to McDs. It is a simple, clean restaurant with a basic menu. I had fried chicken and a salad. The chicken was cooked just right with a crunchy breading, but very little seasoning. The meat was tasty. The salad was a simple bowl of iceberg lettuce, a few tomato slices, shredded cheddar and onions. Nothing great, but quite decent. What a find! This place is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but it's not too far off of 70. Definitely worth the detour. Just plain, good food. My friends got a ham and cheese sub, a turkey club and an egg salad sandwich. I got a grilled cheese. We were all happy with our choices. We also got the cream of crab soup (worth the drive from Frederick), cream of potato soup and mac and cheese and shared the fried pickles and potato blossom. Everything was excellent and just like mom made. I will definitely go back. Next time I'll save room for the pie! read more

Well worth the detour if you're driving thru on I-70!! We were headed home to Baltimore area from Deep Creek Lake and wanted some coffee and a bite. McDonalds was quick hop off the highway but then saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a shot......EXCELLENT CHOICE!! Super quaint little diner with locals hanging drinking coffee. Service is friendly and perfect!!! Wife had French toast that she requested to be well done and they cooked it perfectly with no sneers or eye rolling cuz of her request. I had sausage gravy and biscuits with side of bacon and fries eggs on top. Heart stopper but totally delicious!!!! This place is awesome and also reasonably priced!! We found this little gem on the Only In Maryland newsletter. You could tell they're not used to strangers stopping in, they were quiet at first but friendly. The food didn't disappoint. Stopped in to eat today with a friend for the first time. It was actually horrible and I'll never go back. I got a grilled Reuben and french fries and I think the Reuben was made and put in the basket and put down in the deep fryer and brought up it was greasy it was horrible. French fries were great. My friend got a hamburger steak and mashed potatoes and coleslaw. He wasn't impressed but it was nothing like what I ordered. The Clear Spring Country Diner was Well worth the short detour off I-70. We started off with a cup of each of the 2 homemade crab soups: Maryland and Cream of Crab. Both were outstanding. Then on to one of the chalkboard specials of the day: beerr battered cod. We asked to substitute sliced cucumber salad for the Mac 'n Cheese. No problem and a delicious choice. The second side featured, stewed tomatoes, had sold out, The beets we took instead were fine, but not special. Then there was dessert. We thought we had died & gone to Heaven after our first bite of Almond Joy Pie! Oreo crust, chewy coconut filling with toasted almonds and whole almonds drizzled with chocolate on the top!!! Indescribably delicious. Will be returning just for thar!!! Will probably even call ahead to order a whole pie to take home. The staff could not have been more welcoming. We arrived shortly before the 8 pm closing time, but were served graciously and warmly. Prices from an earlier era! What a great discovery. We can't wait to get out of the "fast lane" and enjoy dining again at the Clear Spring Country Diner! read more

3 stars because the food is decent. Most people don't know this but Clearspring Country Diner makes excellent subs. They're just as good as Hartle's subs and you don't have to drive all the way in town to get one. The hours are questionable though. It seems like they're always closed when I try to go there. Restaurant is right on Rt. 40 (Old National Pike) so it's not hard to find. It's quite a drive though if you're not a Clearspring local. It's a nice place to stop and get lunch to go. Especially if you're spending the day at Fort Frederick, McCoy's Ferry, Four Locks or Dam #5. I will be l going back just for the subs. Yum stop and give them a try next time you're in the area. read more

Stopped by on the way to WV, easy access from I-70. Maryland Club soup was awesome! Hamburger with everything was fresh. Try the delicious Potato Bloom, like French fries but thin like potato chips. Green beans were bit salty but still yummy; you can taste the ham bone cooked in. 4 stars or 5? Definitely five considering the prices (lunch for two - under $20). read more

Food is pretty good if you can get them to wait on you. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and there were only a few people seated in the restaurant. A server was rolling silverware and told us someone would be with us shortly. Twenty minutes later after no one came to our table we got up and left. While we were waiting another couple came in and after a few minutes a server brought drinks to them without even going to their table. Apparently they were locals and she knew what they wanted without asking first. If you're a local regular you'll get good service, if not, good luck.
